World governments are focussing too much on fighting terrorism while obesity and other "lifestyle diseases" are killing millions more people, an international conference heard Monday.Overcoming deadly factors such as poor diet, smoking and a lack of exercise should take top priority in the fight against a growing epidemic of chronic disease, legal and health experts said.
Global terrorism was a real threat but posed far less risk than obesity, type two diabetes and smoking-related illnesses, US law professor Lawrence Gostin said at the Oxford Health Alliance Summit here.
"Ever since September 11 we've been lurching from one crisis to the next which has really frightened the public," Gostin told AFP later.
Maybe, but the fatties aren't trying to kill the rest of us, or force us to eat more Twinkies and potato chips. And they don't make bomb-vests in 3X size.
Considering that most of the detainees in Guatanamo have gained weight during their stay, we've been fighting terrorism with obesity all along.
I will file this with the University studies on things like;
Cats will give you mental disease, dogs and cats will give you urinary tract infections, pork is bad for you, beef is bad for and on and on and on.

Forcing the detainees at Gitmo to put on weight is torture akin to waterboarding. The detainees are held down while hamburgers, fried chicken and french fries and many other trans fat laden foods are poured over their face. The detainee has an overwhelming feeling of being bloated. This torture must end.

Obesity is definitely a crisis for the world and no doubt a cause of much misery. But so is starvation. Hundreds of millions go to bed hungry each night, and not by choice. So, a solution: Feed the obese to the hungry and voilà, problem solved!!!

Weight gain an terrorism are 2 very different kind of problems. Weight gain is addressible (eat less, change your diet, exercise more) particularly in children.
The danger from Islamic extremism isn't just in direct deaths. It is in the soul killing culture. Look at Arab Muslim countries low literacy, rampant discrimination against anyone other than a Muslim male. The economic drain from this extremism is enormous. If the West every became Islamic for real, the destruction of the economic basis of the West also become real.

I deal with disordered eating myself. I am coping with the problem because it does affect others around me. If I destroyed myself through binge eating, it would negatively my family and friends. It would be selfesh and I would bare responsibility for my own actions, as well as any pain that causes. However, being overweight (if one is unhealthy as a result) may have various moral implications, but it is certainly not illegal.
To compare that to someone who willingly goes out and murders civillians is ludicrous. There is no logical comparison.
Does this professor not understand the difference between selfish and sadistic, legal and illegal?

Well, I consulted Robert before I deleted it. I don't think either of us "went out of our way" to take offense at it. (But I do think people tend to confuse political correctness and basic decency. There's an important distinction to be made there.)
You have to take into consideration the prevailing American usage of the word, and as Pelayo said, it's certainly "delete-worthy" at our site, which you correctly note is quite different in tone and content from yours.
But neither I nor Robert have come over to your site and complained about how you run it.

I fully understand where you are coming from, but still disagree. If I said, the guy on the right above is a f--king piece of sh-t, it would be an accurate description, but not something that should be said here, or indeed, out in public. I can't tell you what I hear out of teenagers and early twenty-somethings' mouths when I'm out to dinner with my friends or my adult kids. There is so much cussing or using God's name in vain in the course of an average conversation. It is not necessary and it makes one think that these kids who say it are low lifes. Indeed, they are working toward the title. It makes people feel icky and that's totally different than climbing on a high horse and letting everyone know that one has been offended. It shows a lack of consideration for others feelings and a lack of good manners.
I like to use the rule of thumb that if what is being said would shock my mother or my grandmother, then its better left unsaid.
You blew it when you used that word but it's not irreparable. We don't kill people here for doing things we disagree with, unlike SOME PEOPLE WE KNOW. ; ) But you can't rationalize this one, no matter how hard you try. It's just too gross. All I can do is reiterate the difference I believe is quite clear between political correctness and decency.
And no one should think we delete only in the interest of image; what we delete is motivated by principles on which we have a broad consensus, and as those links show, one that has been consistent.
If an idea is such that it can only be expressed in such coarse terms, I question the substance of it, and how useful it ultimately is. Besides, I don't think making such a big deal over a deleted four-letter word is the best use of our time. It's not the end of the world; we could be talking about something else.

Part of the problem here is that those guidelines have never been well defined. The two links - rather verbose essays on posting ettiquette - is not a substitute for clear, well defined guidelines, accompanied by examples of what is and isn't acceptable.
Note - this isn't a mere sweating over a deleted post in poor taste that's diverted the discussion, but rather a reiteration of the point that when the guidelines for posting are deliberately left vague for whatever reasons - good or bad - it's somewhat disingenuous for the owners of this site to complain about the complains of posters who've had their posts deleted.
Look, we all know that Americans are mealy mouthed and can't share the robust use of English that the rest of us can. Their society is deeply infected with political correctness and it's impossible for the average citizen of the USA to exercise his/her linguistic skills in a cutting and meaningful way.
You've got to forgive them and their society but mostly you've got to realise that this site may be hosted in the USA and has to be compliant with USA law. This means that different standards from the rest of the world have to apply. In the USA people are not allowed the same laxity of insult, the same barbed and taunting comments that the rest of us take for granted. In the USA there is no such thing as free speech - leastways, not as the rest of us understand it. In the USA it's a limited animal drawn about with rules - whereas for the rest of us we can pretty much say what we like in any terms that we like - assuming that we believe that we can prove what we say. They can't. There are rules for them that we simply don't have. There are also primitive societal constraints that we Europeans don't have to operate under but they, seemingly, do.
You've got to remember that when it comes to free speech the USA is nowhere near as free as the rest of the world. They'll get there one day but they're still far too young a country - and still too influenced by their religious past - to have gotten there yet. Just be patient for a couple of hundred years and the USA will catch up with the rest of the free world! In the meantime, this is Mr. Spencer's site so leave it to his good judgement about what can be legally said here. More than that, it's his site so he has a right to say what he wants on it! After all, he pays the bills.

Good grief, no. I most certainly don't hate America or Americans - I spend far too much time on your side of the pond to let such idiot emotions as hate get in the way. But what I do find, every time I'm over there in the USA, is like it feels like stepping back in time, like going from 2008 in Europe back to 1950 when I'm in the US of A. It's all just so old-fashioned on your side of the pond.
My mobile phone, which works everywhere else on the planet doesn't work in the States - I need to carry a special USA one only. I can't access my ISP in the US but I can everywhere else on the planet - I need to have a separate USA only ISP for my laptop. The car I hire resembles the sort of vehicle we gave up over seventy years ago - huge and gas-guzzling and so soft in the suspension that I get sick. Every hotel and motel I stay in you can actually hear the AC and the fans - no European motel has noisy AC to that extent, we simply wouldn't tolerate it. The food is so bad and so bland - no taste and no service and what service there is is so bad and so grudging I feel desparately unwelcome: American restaurant staff are arrogant and supercilious to the extreme even in the best of restaurants. I've paid hundreds of dollars in Washington (DC) entertaining business colleagues in restaurants that they are pleased with but that I wouldn't give the time of day to if they were in Europe.
Your railways (railroads) are crap and have never delivered me on time anywhere in the USA - not once - whereas I routinely travel by train in Europe and arrive on time. Your internal airlines are so unreliable as to be a joke for we British who are used to service of a far superior order from our internal flights - internal to the UK as well as internal in Europe.
Generally, what I find is that you are a great and friendly people - oh boy are you friendly as my waistline testifies from all the good home-baking from many, many friends I've made throughout your great country - not least Annie Willason in a small town in Idaho who took me in when my car broke down and fed me 'till I could eat no more, thanks Annie - but generally your public services are s**t and your expectations from your public services are so low as to make most Europeans laugh.

Must say again that I never use the term, didn't understand fully what it meant, had a vague understanding of it, but it's reseblance to Fatwa was enough to use it against these fat scum. And I Definitely didn't know how it'd be recieved, mainly my ladies, but there is one definition of the word [in dictionary.com] that fit perfectly:
'a man who is a stupid incompetent fool', and its synonym is 'fathead'.

Damn, now I understand. Those planes missed the Twin Towers. They collapsed because of all the overweight people inside. Nothing to do with Islam after all.
Obesity doesn't, alas, traffic nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction that jihadists hope will exterminate whole populations of entire "infidel" nation-states, the populations of which number many hundreds of millions.
One can always lose weight if obese; millions do every day. Once a nation or civilization is destroyed by jihadist warfare (as were Byzantium or Egypt or Persia) the destruction can't be reversed.
I'd therefore have to say that Islam is deadlier by far. If I can see that, so can the 'experts.'
