BEIRUT (Reuters) - Hezbollah leader Imad Moughniyah, on the United States' most wanted list for attacks on Israeli and Western targets, has been killed by a bomb attack in Damascus, the Lebanese group said on Wednesday.Hezbollah accused Israel of assassinating Moughniyah, who was head of the Hezbollah security network during Lebanon's 1975-90 civil war, by planting a bomb in his car. In Gaza, Hamas Islamists called for the Arab world to unite against Israel.
Israel denied any involvement in the killing, seen as a major setback to Syrian and Iranian-backed Hezbollah that fought a 34-day war with Israel in 2006.
Moughniyah, 45, was killed late on Tuesday. He had long been on a list of foreigners Israel wanted to kill or apprehend and the United States had offered a $5 reward for his capture.
"His killing is a huge blow to Hezbollah. It is very indicative," Magnus Ranstrop, terrorism expert at the Swedish National Defence College, told Reuters.

Given the internecine fights that occur so often in Islam, how many enemies did this guy make in his own community? Muslims kill their own with regularity. Moughniyah was head of the Hezbollah security network during Lebanon's 1975-90 civil war. Syria murdered a Lebanese politician. Maybe the Lebanese returned the favor. What is it with Syria, anyway? For a police state, they should have done a better job of keeping their terrorists safe.

This is big. Before Bin Laden this guy was the most wanted terrorist and the one who was responsible for the death of more Americans than anybody. Nobody has been able to get him. He was the head of the Jihad Council in Hizballah, one of the seven members of the Shura Council (headed by Nasrallah), and the only one who was not a cleric. Mugnia was in charge of all the attacks on Israel and all militia and overseas operations. Mugnia was also put in charge of future strikes against the U.S. and the West (by Ahmadinejad) in the event of strikes against Iran. This is not just another cockroach.
This guy was responsible for more US deaths than Bin Laden before 911. He was the big fish.
It's been awhile, but I do believe Imad Mugniyah was behind the 83 Beirut bombing that killed a couple hundred American soldiers sleeping in their barracks while there on a peacekeeping mission.
Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think it was Mugniyah that was behind that 83 bombing in Beirut.

If he was falling out with the Assads but not Hizbullah, this could mean a rift between Iran and Syria. If he was falling out with Hizbullah, too bad. I recall Elie Hobeika trying to hunt him down in the 80s. Moughniyah somewhat outlived him.

Imad could have been killed by just about anyone, but assuming it was a Mossad operation, one has to marvel at the extent of Israel's ability to penetrate closed societies like Syria.

I read this site and another about this bad character. It got me thinking of the killings of the 20's and 30's in gang land Chicago and New York. There are so many players; Mossad, Syria, Hizballah, Hamas, US, Russia, Al Qaeda, ISLAM and on it goes. It will diffinatly make a good movie. Maybe like 'God Father' call it 'Allah Follower'. It could be an epic covering generations, HECK! 1400 years. You see this scrawny little kid in a dirty mud hut playing with his idols. One looks like that slab in 2001 and also one of the twin towers at the WTC. It's name is Allah. He kills a dog with a jaw bone that is trying to get something to eat. You cut to a few hundred years later and see the slab in this square building with a fabric covering and thousands of people constantly circling it. The next shot is the planes flying into the WTC . . . Oh, I am getting carried away, sorry. It would make a good movie because it is so close to reality. And I have not even developed all of the characters yet.
Of course Hollywood will not touch this with a ten foot pole unless the US or the West is the enemy.

Similar thoughts pass through my mind--but our enemies are aware of their victims' satisfaction, if not joy, with the death of Mughniyeh. They wouldn't hesitate to celebrate others' miseries--we don't need to gloat, but need to continue striking back.
The Syrians have no reason to play this up--it only shows their weakness vis-a-vis the Israelis.

My feelings of belated justice having finally been served were dampened considerably after having read Debbie Schlussel's blog today (debbieschlussel.com). She reports that many of Imad's relatives are living in the USA in the greater Detroit area. Many of these individuals are - no surprise - Hezbollah supporters. Our immigration policy is insane, and it seems that no one in our government cares. Homeland Security is a joke.
I have read the AP and Reuters reports. There is nothing to indicate that the body removed from the bombed car was Moughniyah, other than the statement of Hezbollah. This guy has reported to have had cosmetic surgery to disguise his identity. He is supposed to be a master of hiding and clandestine behavior. I suggest corroboration, other than the statement of Hezbollah, would be needed to ascertain that Moughniyah is actually dead.

Yes, the martyrdom statement from Hezbollah is the only evidence that it was Mugniyeh killed in the detonation. There's also reports that Hajj Hussein Khalil (Hezbo Dep. Sec-Gen for poltical affairs) was also killed.
What if this car bomb was one of Mug's creations, and was destined for service in Martyr's Square, Beirut during the 3rd anniversary rally honoring the Hariri assassination tomorrow?

Due to a techinal faux pas this car bomb may hae detonated a wee bit early. More than one terrorist has had a similar unfortunate occurance.

Yeaaah Baby! This is great news. It made my day, after staying home from work to get the snow removed from this Nor'easter before getting drenched by rains. I came inside after nearly 90 mins. of snow removal, exhausted, and thirsty. Turned on the computer in my office. Checked in here, as well as seeing the news elsewhere. I thought: this is a real morale booster. The earth is rid of one vile piece of excrement. 240 U.S. Marines, as well as other Americans and Jews who were his victims, are "high-fiving" each other in heaven. Their deaths are avenged. Imad is in hell servicing the Devil.
