There followed the usual litany of verses from the Hebrew Scriptures, trying to portray the Bible as just as violent as the Qur'an, and conveniently ignoring the fact that Jews and Christians are nowhere committing acts of violence that they are justifying them by reference to these verses, while Muslims are committing violence and justifying it by reference to the Qur'an all over the world.
Anyway, "james mitchell" kept writing to me now and again. And October 28, 2007, he wrote this:
yes the "truth" is hard to take. you constantly bash and demonize our religion. you say the reason terrorist do this is 100% because of islam. when in reality it has other factors. there are may people NON-MUSLIMS who know this. Ron paul, sagemen, pape, dennis kusinich and millions of others. every action has a reaction.
Our religion? But wait -- I thought "james" was Jewish, and here he was criticizing me for allegedly "bashing" his religion -- Islam!
And this afternoon I heard from him again:

The subject he is referring to was "idiot you." But "james," "james," how can I get all worked up about how you've refuted me when you can't even remember if you're a Jew or a Muslim? A culture of chronic lying has to be the main factor holding back Islamic countries.
Business dealings can't go much beyond immediate exchange without a great degree of trust. A good reputation is invaluable in the west and can open all kind of doors. Those doors remain closed in Islamic societies, much to their cost.

The commandments can still be in effect but the circumstances have made them academic a long time ago.

I would say you are dead wrong. The concept seems so alien to us, but in context, let's put it where it belongs. The cannanites were not the sweet people who were slaughtered but people who's pagan practices, who's desecrations were so ordained by G-d to merit their expulsion and destruction if they would not surrender. And only there, and only then. So- the notion that they were to be beheaded and have all their property stolen and their women raped does not appear, nor did the Israelites get heavenly reward for this conquering, and it did not apply anywhere except in that small land, and at that time. And when they didn't do all that was ordained, they too were continually corrupted and forced into death far more than their 'enemies'.
So to take the events out of the biblical context- which by the way- produced the greatest of leaps forward in the concepts of justice, of law, of child welfare, of the rights of women, of the obligations to family, society, and to each other began what was the development of the western civ. Not it's destruction, which is what Islamic jurisprudence and theology stand for.
