In this superb piece at the Gloria Center, Barry Rubin reminds us of just how bizarre the situation regarding Israel really is:
The Arab-Israeli conflict definitely holds the record for the most bizarrely treated issue in modern history. It is easy to forget just how strange this situation is and the extent to which it is understood and handled so totally different from other, more rationally, perceived problems. [...]To summarize: Fatah acts as a terrorist group; the PA facilitates terrorism and includes people leading terrorist groups; Fatah views itself as an ally of a group that attacks it and murders its own members; the West aids Fatah and the PA with no attempt to discourage their behavior; Israeli Arab politicians side with terrorism; and Israelis, at the risk of their lives, try to save Arab lives, and would like to have a two-state solution if the other side is every able to make and implement such a deal.
Oh, yes, and guess who much of the world blames for the conflict. As I said, uniquely bizarre.
Don't fail to read it all.
While of course Fatah et al. bear all the blame for terror, Israel has definitely facilitated this since Oslo. Israel's stance is contradictory. What is the West to make of it when a country continues to supply food, electricity, water to its mortal enemies? Perhaps, one could conclude, Hamas is not that much of a danger. Perhaps there is no black and white. (And, of course, there is.) This is entirely Israel's doing. They have opened up and kept open a gigantic moral hole for those who don't like Israel to drive through. Why shouldn't we side with the Rachel Corry's of the world; she was helping the Palestinians just as Israel is.
To me, it's clear as anything could be: Israel needs to destroy Hamas, and if that means destroying Gaza, so be it. Then it can turn on the PA and evict them from the West Bank and end the Oslo farce. Anything is a moral hole.
The situation is bizarre and it will continue to be a deathly Disney World until all face the truth that the objection to Jews having their own non-Dhimmi state in Dar-al-Islam is rooted in the Qu'ran and Muslim dogma. It is equally bizarre that those who point to that reality (JihadWatch's Spencer and Fitzgerald, e.g.) are treated as being bad people for pointing to that reality. In a place where few face reality things are bizarre.
REALITY:
"The next segment of Sura 2, verses 75-105, continues the Qur’an’s criticism of the Jews. When you read statements by Hamas leaders or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about Israel, remember that they view Israel and Jews through a Qur’anic prism. They have learned, if they have studied the Qur’an at all, that the Jews are the most perverse and guilty – as well as the craftiest and most persistent – enemies of Allah, Muhammad and the Muslims"-Robert Spencer.

BAout as bizarre as Republicans voting for McCain
Mahmoud Abbas reminds me of the root of the word sinister. It comes from the Latin (as I understand) and means "left-handed". To call someone sinister in the ancient word meant that they put out their right hand for shaking but their left hand held a knife.
"Victims" turn out to be aggressors. Moderates are radical. Instead of celebrating life, Palestinians worship death.
Orwell was right. Newspeak is alive and well our current age.
Orwell was right.

I was just thinking that myself.
Everything is backward, the Ministry/Religion of Peace wages war. The situation described is worse than bizarre, it is nuts. I don't want one penny of my money to go to support this, but does Bush/Rice care about that? Nope they indulge themselves in this craziness and make us pay for it. There are really two only worlds, dar al-sanity, and dar al- insanity. It looks like, as things stand now, dar al-insanity, is ahead on points...
Preschoolers Hurt in Israel-Gaza Fighting
above, a foxnews front page headline.
However, when you read the story it is Israeli children who were injured by Hamas rockets.
Talk about the power of the hyphen.
Shouldn't Gaza come first?
I hope I can get this posted. The internet is not too reliable now. I am being overrun by those same storms that killed so many in the south last night. Pray for me.
OT
I normally wouldn't care about this but there is an islamic element here.
Speaking of bizarre -
Britney has managed to aquire a muslim manager named Osama who seems to be drugging her and disconnecting her phones to keep complete control, and a muslim bodyguard/boyfriend named Adnan who is keeping her locked up in her house and not allowing her out.
No wonder she is acting so strange lately. Here's The Smoking Gun with a bizarre court paper spelling it out.
Each page gets stranger and stranger...

It's only bizarre by the standard of rationality.
The problem of Islam -- and its corollary, excessive Western self-criticism (manifested in, among other things, an anti-Israel stance further complicated by more or less crypto-anti-Semitism) -- is not approached in the mainstream West with rationality.
Therefore, the expressions and behaviors to which Barry Rubin adverts are not bizarre, except when measured against the standards of a very small minority in the West. They are not bizarre; they are the norm.
The Muslim mindset, where lies and twisted logic develop, can only offer the world "uniquely bizarre" interactions 100% of the time. This is their grotesque gift to humanity.
Mohammad's legacy of lies - allah must be very proud.

‘The expulsion of Jews from England (1290) France (1391), Austria (1421) and Spain (the Alhambra decree 1492) were seen by many as a sign of approaching redemption and contributed to the messianic spirit of the time.’
Was Islam to blame for this?
‘In Palestine, Jewish militias (the Haganah, Etzel and Lehi) decided to form a unified Jewish resistance movement against the British. Meanwhile illegal immigration activity grew leading to British counter measures against the Jewish community.’
‘Following a British raid on the headquarters of the Jewish Agency, Jewish terrorist groups responded in July 1946 by bombing the British Military Headquarters in Palestine at the King David Hotel bombing, killing 91 (most of them civilians).’
If Arabs killed 91 Jews in one attack the world would be in uproar. But when the Isreali’s take out civilians they defend it by saying they were terrorists or terrorists were hiding there.
‘The 1994 Cave of the Patriarchs massacre perpetrated by Baruch Kappel Goldstein, who shot and killed 39 Muslims, and wounded another 150, has been cited as a case of religious terrorism.’
‘The Qibya Operation was carried out in October 1953 by Israeli troops in the West Bank village of that name. The village name is sometimes spelt Kibya. The operation was referred to by the Israel Defense Force, or IDF, as Operation Shoshana or the Qibya Operation.’

The act was condemned by the US State Department, the UN Security Council, and by Jewish communities worldwide.[1] As a result, aid was temporarily suspended to Israel’

The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem Revisited, 2003
I don’t see no Jews being forced out of their homes and these expulsions still happen.
No matter where the Jews went, they were persecuted. The Arabs controlled Palestine it was Arab land but they didn’t stop Jews from immigrating. They gave them a home only for the Jews to bite the hand that fed them. They became greedy and attacked the Muslims so they could have the land for themselves. What we see today is a total reversal of how Palestine was a century ago. Even the Jews committed ‘terrorism’ so stop this bullshit about how it is just a Muslim phenomenon. Terrorism happens for a reason and the causes are more social than religious.
To have the nerve to say the Israeli’s are peaceful is beyond me when you consider the hundreds of Jewish settlements on Palestinian land. The thousands of Palestinians in refugee camps in their own land. The targeting of ambulances, schools and hospitals by Israel. When it happens all we hear is Israel is defending itself and the terrorists were hiding there, but it’s not true. Israel is the perpetrator to the problem. They attack a hospital and bulldoze a home and when the Palestinians retaliate all we hear is Palestinian terrorism. Israel became a nation by force and terrorism; they had no right to be there. They’ve forced the Palestinians into poverty, when the Palestinians sheltered them from slaughter.
How grateful they are.
uniquely bizarre that the jews need to illegally occupy palestinian land :)

Fatah was founded by Yasser Arafat, if I have my info straight. I believe its original goal was to exterminate the Jews from the entire Levant region, of which Israel is a major part.
And, wasn't Yasser Arafat considered the founder of modern day Islamic terrorism??
That would make fatah a terrorsim organization would it not???
ps-'saracen', Muslims took Judaic homeland territory ("Palestine") by dint of military conquest, contributed nothing to the entire Levant region but warfare, misery and bloodshed and have no legitimate claim to the area other than the wanton use of military muscle and moral equivalence propaganda.
When was the Muslim world anythin but impoverished? And, by the way, a citizen of Palestine is properly called a "Philistine" NOT a "Palestinian."
I don't recognise this nation called israel its a metaphor to me. It's never existed in my eyes nor will I ever accept it. Call me an anti-Semite I couldn't care less.
There will inevitably come a time when the Muslims will no longer be the victims as they are today. Even then they will extend peace towards others and show a bit of humanity that is not forthcoming to them. So keep talking the question for you is how will you be able to stop the rise of the 'sleeping giant.'
A metaphor? It has never existed? Well, like it or not, Israel DOES exist and she's here to stay, and no amount unacceptance on anyones part will make her go away.
And victims my ass.
thesaracen said
So, thesaracen and his fellow mujahaddin will continue their jihad as long as they are alive.
It reminds me of the quote about why it is dangerous to set yourself up as "Dictator For Life": you have given your opponents exactly one way to transition the government.
Islam is not a 'sleeping giant'. Islam is a rabid dog, snapping and biting at anything near it.
Islam is a sleeping giant, but not in the way that thesaracen meant it.
Islam is definitely sleeping, if you want to call being dead and void of life "sleeping", then OK, Islam is in fact "sleeping".
And Islam is a giant, a great big GIANT pain in the ass.
For any first-time non-Muslim reader or visitor here, who has encountered the 'saracen's venomous lies and distortions above, and may possibly be confused by them:
If you are French, or if you are not French but can read French, obtain, and read, Jacques Ellul's "Un Chretien Pour Israel". It contains a masterly deconstruction of the appalling 'palestinian' arab muslim propaganda against the Jews, and against Israel.
Yaacov Lozowick's "Right to Exist" and James Parkes' "Whose Land?" and "The Story of Jerusalem" are also very useful.
Parkes' detailed, century by century account of the total social, ecological and economic collapse of eretz Israel which began with the Arab Muslim conquest and proceeded relentlessly through the entire period of Muslim imperial occupation, domination, and vicious exploitation and persecution of the indigenous people, Jews, Christians, and Samaritans, is a devastating indictment of the effect of Islam in the long term upon any land and its inhabitants. Moshe Gil's "Legacy of Jihad in Palestine" is a good companion piece to Parkes' book.
If you have not already done so, you must also read Bat Yeor, "The Dhimmi: Jews and Christians Under Islam". It is not pleasant reading. Document 95 is the testimony of the Jew Samuel of Acre, 1270-1350 who - when Crusader Acre fell to the Muslim Mamlukes - fled and took refuge in...Christian Spain! He writes, of Muslim conduct toward Jews in the land of Israel: "they strike upon the head the children of Israel who dwell in our lands, and they thus extort money from them by force. For they say in their tongue, mal al-yahudi mubah, 'it is lawful to take money of the Jews'. For, in the eyes of the Muslims, the children of Israel are as open to abuse as an unprotected field. Even in their law and statutes they rule that the testimony of a Muslim is always to be believed against that of a Jew."
On page 55 one finds the following examples of Muslim 'humanity':
"In 1849 the Jews of Tiberias envisaged exile because of the brutality, exactions, and injustice of the authorities. In addition to ordinary taxes, their coreligionists in Hebron were accustomed to pay 5000 piastres annually to an Arab sheikh for the 'protection' of their lives and property; nonetheless the same sheikh added a further ransom in 1852, threatening to attack and expel them from the town if it were not paid."
For more detail on how triumphant Islam behaves, and how it has always behaved, both during and after it conquers a region, read Andrew Bostom's "The Legacy of Jihad". Take, for example, from the section entitled 'Jihad on the indian Subcontinent', the following passage from Ibn Battuta the Muslim historian, who records how Sultan Ma'bar treated Hindu captives, c. 1345:
"All the infidels found in the jungle were taken prisoners...
In the morning, the Hindus who had been made prisoners the day before, were divided into four groups, and each of these was led to one of the four gates of the main enclosure. There they were impaled on the posts they had themselves carried. Afterwards their wives were butchered and tied to the stakes by their hair. The children were massacred on the bosoms of their mothers, and their corpses left there. Then they (the Muslims) struck camp and started cutting down trees in another forest, and all the HIndus who were made captive were treated in the same manner."
The mind-wrenching cruelty and mass murder of captives, men, women and little children, here described by Ibn Battuta as coolly if he were describing the killing of chickens, not the slaughter of defenceless fellow humans, is completely typical of ALL of the extant accounts of jihad, as recorded both by Muslims and by non-Muslim observers who somehow managed to survive. Ah, the 'humanity' of Muslim conquerors.
'saracen' is very careful not to mention the fact that at the very same time as early medieval Christian Europe - to its shame; I do not excuse the act - was expelling or killing Jews, Muslim hands were far from clean.
Ibn Warraq remarks: "those apologists who continue to perpetuate the myth of Islamic tolerance should contemplate the massacre and extermination of the Zoroastrians in Iran; the million Armenians [Christians] in Turkey [in the late 19th and again in the early 20th century]; the Buddhists and Hindus in India; THE MORE THAN SIX THOUSAND JEWS IN FEZ, MOROCCO, IN 1033; HUNDREDS OF JEWS KILLED IN CORDOBA BETWEEN 1010 AND 1013; THE ENTIRE JEWISH COMMUNITY OF FOUR THOUSAND IN GRANADA IN 1066; THE JEWS IN MOROCCO IN 1232; the Jews in Tetuan, Morocco, in 1790; the Jews of Baghdad in 1828; and so on ad nauseam". (Foreword to 'Myth of Islamic Tolerance', p. 15-16).
