Danish Police Say Muhammad-Cartoons Death Plot Foiled (Update1)

Feb. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Danish police arrested suspects in an alleged plot to murder one of a dozen cartoonists whose caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in 2005 sparked riots in Muslim communities around the world.

Denmark's Security and Intelligence Service, PET, detained an unspecified number of people at 4:30 a.m. local time today in Aarhus, where Jyllands-Posten, the newspaper that commissioned the cartoons, is based.

``The purpose of the clampdown was to prevent a terror- related homicide,'' PET chief Jakob Scharf said in an e-mailed statement. ``The clampdown occurred after a long period of surveillance.''

The detainees are suspected of planning to kill Kurt Westergaard, who in September 2005 provided the newspaper with a cartoon of Muhammad wearing a bomb in his turban, according to Jyllands-Posten. Protests prompted by publication of the cartoons included consumer boycotts of Danish goods and the torching of Danish embassies.

``I fear for my life, when the police tell me there are certain people who are working with concrete plans to kill me,'' the newspaper cited Westergaard as saying today. ``I think the aftermath of this insane reaction will last as long as I live. It's sad, but those are the terms under which I now live.''

Police Protection

Westergaard, 73, has been under police protection since receiving death threats after the drawings were published, according to Jyllands-Posten's editor-in-chief, Carsten Juste. The newspaper has received bomb threats and its journalists have been subjected to ``countless death threats,'' Juste told broadcaster TV2 today.

``This doesn't change in any way my perception that we need to work against dark forces that want to fight against freedom of speech,'' Juste said.

Scharf said, ``PET wished to take no unnecessary risks and therefore decided to intervene at an early stage to disrupt the planning of the murder.''

The suspects, who include both Danish and foreign citizens, planned to kill Westergaard in his home, Jyllands-Posten said.

``We have warned that the situation could get out of control,'' Kasem Said Ahmad, a spokesman for a Muslim organization, the Islamic Community in Denmark, told TV2. ``We want a decent tone between Muslims and Danes. But we maintain our view that the cartoons were provocative.''

Denmark's Royal Library on Jan. 30 said it was in talks to acquire the 12 caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. The library said it would treat the cartoons as it does the books in its collection, and would allow patrons to sign to view them.

``It would be natural for us to have them at the Royal Library,'' Jytte Kjaergaard, a spokeswoman for the Copenhagen- based institution, said then. ``We don't perceive them as works of art. We don't have any view on their substance or content. Our view is that they hold a place in our cultural heritage. The cartoons have become a part of Danish history.''

What is all the fuss about, the loudspeakers will only blare 5 times in the day. At dawn, midday, about the middle of the afternoon, just after sunset, and at night fall about two hours after sunset.

In Pak back in the 80s/90s the muezzin, a man appointed to call to prayer, used to climb the mineret of the mosque, call in all directions, "Hasten to prayer."

Many mosques no longer require the muezzin to climb the minaret, instead, a loud speaker carries the message.

Three things need a bit of attention:

1) A sign showing direction to Mecca.
2) Please do not encourage sunni & shia to have mosque close together… loudspeaker messages in the same area are usually not synchronised and they try to outdo each other.
3)As Kaffur…please insist on the best quality loudspeaker to be fitted in the minaret …there is nothing worse than a tinny and crackly azaan

Surely, in this technologically advanced age, there is some way forgetful or scatterbrained Muslims can be reminded to pray five times a day without the entire community being bothered? Can't they just do what people who have to take medication several times daily do, and set their watches or their cellphones to beep at the correct intervals? Or if that's not reliable enough, perhaps they could (with their consent, of course!) be wired up to some remote computerized central control panel, which delivers a little painless zap five times daily to remind them to get down on their knees NOW? But then of course, by sparing the dhimmis, this would defeat the entire purpose of the so-called "call to prayer", which is to never, ever let the dhimmis forget who and what are among them. The muezzin call is an act of intimidation. That's why they're so passionately attached to it, and also why they can't grasp the concept of silent, discreet, unobtrusive prayer. The whole point of Muslim prayer is to be loud, aggressive, visually intimidating, and intrusive. Watching a group of members of any other faith praying together, all I see is people praying together. Watching a large group of Muslim men praying together, on the other hand, usually makes me think "Nuremberg Rally."

Every time that I read an article about this, I can't believe that we are actually having to debate this in the 21st century. I can understand the point of the azan in places where people don't have access to clocks (for example, seventh-century Arabia). But in the modern-day UK? Why doesn't the mosque simply print up a calendar every month with the daily prayer times indicated, or point people in the direction of a service that will send notifications via mobile phone or email? It should be so simple!

Residents who live near the mosque claim the call will annoy their mainly non-Muslim community and won't even be heard by the majority of Oxford Muslims, who live more than half a mile away.

HO HO HOW WRONG THE RESIDENTS ARE, the moslems will hear the the damned cacophony and so will every body else within a mile radius

This is hardly suprising as not all Brits have been conditioned by 30 years of Multiculturalism. This holds that all perspectives (religious or otherwise) are equally valid. In the case of Islam this is blatantly untrue as the Koran makes it quite clear that it is OK, or even laudable to be Racist (especially in the case of the Jews)
Sexist & Homophobic. Islam is not a "religion of peace" it is an agressive imperialist religion that brooks no competition from anybody. The noisy call to prayer is an act of dominance and aggression. The louder it is, the better. Mosques were always supposed to be built in high ground, or in the most imposing spot, towering over -- those aggressive skyward thrusting minarets were symbols of power, of dominance -- churches and synagogues, in the lands first conquered by Islam. And the same thing continued wherever Islam went.

Some fail to understand that the placement of mosques, the size of mosques, the significance of minarets, and those calls or cries, now electroniically amplified, are all part of a single system, one by which the mosque, not merely or mainly a place of worship, but a place of community gathering, a political and social center, even -- in the Muslim lands -- a place for shows of support or defiance against the government (the naming of the rulers in the khutba being a sign of loyalty, and the omission of those names a sign of disaffection), of plots and schemes, even -- as we see in Iraq and elsewhere, including here and there in Europe -- a place to store weapons, explosives, false papers in false ceiliings -- and a place from which to fire on Infidels (see Iraq, see all of Iraq).

A mosque is NOT a Muslim "church." It is a Muslim "church" and a Muslim "community center" and a Muslim "armory" and a Muslim "army recruiting center" and a Muslim everything. I know that Hugh and others worry a little about the call to prayer…but really it’s not that bad…it does sound quite poetic…almost holy…and you will find that once used to it …you automatically wake up in anticipation about 30sec before the 5am call almost like magic….but like I said high quality speakers are essential.

I would like to see Oxford council take positive steps to “inter-marry” the minarets with the spires and alleviate local populace concerns.

For example, in order to get your childrens comfortable every child through school should get a chance to do work experience which is completely different to what they do in school. So why not get them to spend say 2 weeks work experience at the mosque.

I’m sure that your granddaughters when they first hear about it will get excited and have a lot of ideas on what they would like to do while there.
They would soon get over any initial shock and get to realise that wuslims are warm friendly peoples and that the mosque is really not that different from their own church.

I am sure that the local friendly bobby on the beat makes regular visits anyway, but the highlights would of course be Friday prayers and to see the new Oxford horizion from the top of the minaret.

The key is the report that permission was only granted for the mosque on condition the call would NOT be broadcast. If this is true there should be no problem as they are in breach of their planning permission and the mosque should be told to shut up or be shut down.

Also, if it is true it is yet more proof that the word of muslims is worth nothing when they are dealing with kuffurs.

I re-post it in full because it shows clearly, blow by blow, how the building of a mosque, and the broadcasting of the adhan, can function as a 'wedge' to islamise a suburb and drive out the 'Infidels'.

The trees around my housing society are slowly disappearing since the muslims gangs come at night and cut them up for firewood. The dogs of that area are dying because the muslims run their cabs over them. One cannot leave anything in the garden since things just disappear at night. They even steal light bulbs from the porches.

"Point of this long post is, we don't force them [Muslims] to live in ghettos, they themselves create their own slums. They don't like living in housing societies and the mosque is the centre of their existence.

Arjun - if you should happen to be visiting - thank you for this story. Perhaps, if sent to the folks in Oxford who are challenging the imposition of muezzin-by-loudspeaker, it may spur them on, and prevent Oxford from suffering what happened to your childhood home in India.

just in case Rev Cleverly of St Aldate's church, Oxford, hasn't yet discovered 'jihadwatch' and 'dhimmiwatch' - I really do recommend that you contact him and send him and his congregation a copy of your thoughts on Islam at Oxford, entitled 'an act of dominance and aggression'.

I found out how to email him, quite easily, and sent off a quick letter of encouragement, appending also, for use as possible 'ammunition' with such folks as the town council, the personal testimony of "arjun.sevak" as re-posted above, by way of illustrating how a mosque + azan = thin end of the wedge in creation of a Muslim-dominated zone.

Others here who feel similarly about the stand Rev Cleverly is taking may perhaps wish to follow suit.

We can only guess what sorts of threats and bullying he may be suffering, both from dhimmi-minded fellow citizens, and from the Muslims. I would hazard a guess his church's 'hate mail bag' is overflowing.

The more support and encouragement he receives, not just from fellow- Christians, but from others, the more energy he and his companions will have to continue their fight.

I realize that it's shouting into the wind but, from the technique outlined in the 'Arjun' re-post, it would seem that the most effective weapon in the short term is strictly enforced zoning bylaws.
-residential zoning
-floor space ratios and single family restrictions. Infractions would result in loss of Occupancy Permits, and disconnection of city services (water, electricity, gas, garbage collection). Continuing infractions to result in legal proceedings ...eviction and foreclosure.

-noise control bylaws
-no permanent amplified sound systems permitted
-exceptions being in building interiors eg. schools, clubs etc. BY permit and inspection only!
Infractions would result in the closing of the facility ie loss of Occupancy Permit and fines for continuing infractions. Failure to pay the fines result in eviction and foreclosure proceedings.

Thanks for mentioning that, Arjun. That is the first time that I have seen the effects that the azan could have on people with heart conditions brought up, although I thought of it almost immediately. (I have a sister who has a heart condition in which she is supposed to avoid exposure to sudden, loud noises as much as possible , as they can trigger cardiac arrest. Fortunately she doesn't live in Oxford!) People with heart problems living in the vicinity of the mosque will have to choose between moving and risking aggravating their health problems. It was in Oxford, at the scene of execution at the stake, of Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley, that Latimer spoke the inspiring words -“Be of good comfort, Master Ridley, and play the man; we shall this day light such a candle, by God’s grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.”
