Wikipedia and Robert Spencer

Jihad Watch reader James asked me this morning if I had seen my Wikipedia bio lately, so I went over there to take a look. Some time ago I called it "ridiculous," but it is worse than that: it is relentlessly biased, and the negative spin is thoroughgoing. Hugh Fitzgerald and several other people have strongly advised me to set the record straight, at least with the bio as it stands now, since people continue to use Wikipedia as a research tool. So here goes.

Robert Bruce Spencer (born 1962) is a Catholic American writer specialized in Islam criticism.

Ungrammatical, but never mind. "Catholic." It's true, I am a Catholic. But am I a Catholic writer in the way that, say, George Weigel or Hans Urs von Balthasar or even Walker Percy are Catholic writers? Do I write about Catholic theology or Catholic issues? No. Is Jihad Watch a sectarian, Catholic site? No. Do I write about Islam and jihad from a Catholic perspective, from a vantage point that only a fellow Catholic could best understand or appreciate? Generally no -- I cowrote Inside Islam: A Guide for Catholics five years ago, but otherwise what I write, including my last book, could have been written by anyone, Catholic, Protestant, Hindu, Jew, Buddhist, atheist, who has read the Qur'an and other Islamic texts. And these books can be and have been appreciated by people of all creeds and outlooks.

So why is "Catholic" here so prominently, when John Esposito, who identifies himself as a Catholic, teaches at a Catholic University, and also writes books about Islam, is not so identified in his own Wikipedia bio? It can only be so as to suggest that I am writing out of religious chauvinism, with an agenda, and not approaching Islamic issues objectively. Can such a charge be substantiated from anything I have written? Well, you'll notice that there's a conspicuous lack of such quotes from my work, and if such quotes existed, I expect they'd be here.

And "specialized in Islam criticism"? No. As I have said many times, I specialize in trying to raise awareness of the jihad ideology and Islamic supremacism. This is not a sectarian effort or something that has to do with criticism of Islam per se, and as I have long stated here, any Muslim of good will who sincerely renounces these things is welcome to join our efforts.

He is a contributor to the neoconservative FrontPage magazine, directed by David Horowitz.

"Neoconservative" -- the all-purpose scare word. What does it mean anymore? Jewish? Supporting the Iraq democracy project? In any case, it's interesting that such adjectives are slipped in uncritically, when CAIR and the ADC, mentioned below, are presented without qualifiers of any kind.

Robert Spencer holds a Master's degree in the department of Religious Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 1986. He began his career in 1979 at the University of North Carolina. His MA thesis is entitled The Monophysite in the Mirror and concerns the conversion of John Henry Newman to Catholicism in 1845 and Newman's denunciation of the Church of England as monophysite.

I "began my career" in 1979? I started college in 1979. But aside from this silliness, why is this paragraph here at all? Why is the Master's thesis subject listed? Could anyone but my mother possibly care about the subject of my Master's thesis? Check around Wikipedia and see if the subject of John Esposito's Masters in Theology is listed. No. Karen Armstrong's? I'm not sure she has one, but there are no details in her bio. Look around Wikipedia and you'll be hard pressed to find another writer on anything whose Master's thesis subject is listed in his bio.

So why is it listed? Because it is about Christianity, not Islam -- although I have never claimed otherwise myself. As I explain here about my writings on Islam, "I present the work on the basis of the evidence I bring forth, and invite readers to evaluate it for themselves." In other words, I've never asked anyone to believe anything on my word, or because I have various degrees. I present my work on its merits. But never mind -- if I wrote about Christianity in 1985, I must not have been studying Islam then, right?

(Also, by the way, the summary is inaccurate: Newman didn't denounce the Church of England as Monophysite, and my thesis is only tangentially about Newman at all. It's about the Christological controversies of the early Church, and their connection to various ecclesiological models. It led me to study the Eastern Churches in depth, which coalesced nicely with my study of Islam.)

Views on Spencer and his works

Daniel Pipes has said: "Robert Spencer and I have discussed the perceived differences in our view of Islam. He and I concluded that, although we have different emphases - he deals more with scriptures, I more with history - we have no disagreements."[4] He has also endorsed Spencer's books The Truth About Muhammad, and Onward Muslim Soldiers. Bat Ye'or,[5] and Ibn Warraq[6] are also among those who have a positive view of Spencer's works, while Khaleel Mohammed,[7] Dinesh D'Souza,[8] Karen Armstrong,[9] Ralph Peters,[10] Cathy Young,[11] Stephen Schwartz (journalist),[12] and organizations such as CAIR,[13] and ADC[14] hold negative views.

Now, this is a balance issue: three positives, eight negatives. No mention of praise of my work by such people as Walid Phares, Bruce S. Thornton, Steve Emerson, Habib C. Malik, Ann Coulter, Don Feder, Michelle Malkin, Rabbi David G. Dalin, Serge Trifkovic, Cal Thomas, Damian Thompson of the Telegraph, Andrew McCarthy of National Review, and others. No mention of Dennis Prager's praise of me and Jihad Watch on CNN when Ibrahim Hooper was defaming me. No mention of the many questions about CAIR's ties to Islamic supremacism or the terror convictions of CAIR officials.

Nor is that all:

Khaleel Mohammed, Louay M. Safi, and Carl Ernst assert that Spencer's scholarship and interpretations of Islam are fundamentally flawed - that he supports preconceived notions through selection bias - that he lacks genuine understanding and; that 'he has no academic training in Islamic studies whatsoever; his M.A. degree was in the field of early Christianity'.[15][16][17]

It's false that I have no academic training in Islamic studies. I just don't have a degree in it. But here again, these are just vague accusations, unsupported with examples, and while my reply to Khaleel Mohammed is referenced, although not identified as such, my replies to Louay Safi and Carl Ernst are not referenced.

For example, critics have objected to what they describe as Spencer's method of taking a position they deem to be radical (on apostasy, women, etc.) and then attribute that position to all of Islam, rather than situating it within ongoing discussions.[7]

In reality, I've never said that "all of Islam" holds to anything, and I challenge any of these Wikipedia gremlins to prove otherwise. No evidence is given here, even within the cited articles. It seems that any broad, vague charge will do.

Khaleel Mohammed and Spencer have had detailed discussions on FrontPage Magazine.[18][16][19][20] Carl Ernst and William Kenan have called him an "Islamophobe".[21]

What's an "Islamophobe"? Is this a genuine academic term that professors should be using -- or a manipulative political term that unmasks Ernst and Kenan as propagandists rather than educators? As I wrote here, "I vehemently reject the 'Islamophobe' label, which is only a tool used by Islamic apologists to silence criticism. My work is dedicated to identifying the causes of jihad terrorism, which of course lead straight back into the Islamic texts. I have therefore called for reform of those texts — a necessity that should be obvious to anyone of good will, although I have no illusions that it is forthcoming soon or ever, or that it will be easy. I have dedicated Jihad Watch to defending equality of rights and freedom of conscience for all people. That's Islamophobic? Then is the fault in the phobe, or in the Islam?"

Ernst notes that Spencer's articles have never been published in peer-reviewed academic journals, nor are his publications similarly reviewed or edited by a qualified scholar and published by an academic or university publishers but by conservative presses such as Regnery Publishing.[21]

Given the abysmal, politicized state of academic study of Islam these days, this is more something to celebrate than to be ashamed of, and given Ernst's publishing history with Shambhala Press, more than a little hypocritical on his part.

Spencer's responses to critics

It is good that this section is there, although given the above the bio as a whole is still highly imbalanced.

Controversial conference attendance

In October 2007, Robert Spencer attended a controversial conference in Brussels, Belgium entitled "Counterjihad Brussels 2007".[28] The conference was sponsored and attended by far-right European political parties, including the Vlaams Belang and Sverigedemokraterna. Vlaams Belang is the successor party to the Vlaams Blok, a political party that was completely banned by the highest court of Belgium for being racist.[29] The Sverigedemokraterna has been considered a fringe party too close to neo-Nazi parties in Sweden.[30]

After receiving criticism, Spencer said he disavowed all neo-Nazis and racists present at the conference, and claimed he was unaware of their presence,[31] although sponsors and speakers at the conference were clearly identified.

This one is, of course, the worst of all. I speak all over the place all the time, and if I am responsible for the views on every issue of everyone else who has ever spoken at conferences where I have spoken, I will end up holding some highly contradictory views.

The citation leads here, to a piece about CAIR defaming me. If you read it, you'll see that nowhere do I claim I "was unaware of [the] presence" of the Vlaams Belang and Sverigedemokraterna representatives, and I don't believe it's accurate that they were sponsors of the conference. Also, the use of the word "claimed" is always meant to cast aspersions on the one doing the claiming, and completely vitiates any objectivity this article might have claimed for itself.

The great controversy regarding that conference is actually over whether or not the Vlaams Belang and Sverigedemokraterna really are white supremacist parties -- many who are involved with the parties hotly deny it. In any case, the conference itself touched at no point on white supremacism or neo-Nazism, and I have denounced and abhor white supremacism and neo-Nazism, as well as, specifically, any white supremacist and neo-Nazi elements of those two parties. See here for more on this.

Skeptics should try this: find any statement that I have made, in 20,000 posts at Jihad Watch, seven books, hundreds of articles, anywhere, that could remotely be construed as supporting white supremacism or neo-Nazism -- unless resistance to the global jihad itself is characterized as such. You won't find anything.

James also tells me that the person who added the material about this conference has also edited other Wikipedia entries to remove information about the Council on American Islamic Relations' terror ties and an Islamic supremacist statement by CAIR's Ibrahim Hooper. See for yourself here.

Anyway, I apologize for this long, tedious, self-referential post. It seemed necessary in light of Wikipedia's influence, and now it will be here in the archives for reference. I hope anyone who supports our efforts here in defense of human rights will revise the Wikipedia bio to make it fairer and more accurate, so as not to let the jihad apologists and propagandists rule the day.

Steve Emerson is under attack by a 'Paul Kendall' who is trying to smear him as an 'alleged 'expert on terrorism', as we can see here:

E-mail communications made available during lawsuits involving the building of a mosque in Boston, MA (Boston Lawsuit - ISB David Project), indicate a collaboration between Emerson and the Israeli Government. These electronic communications prove that Emerson, along with some anti-Muslim advocacy groups, worked directly with the public affairs office of the Israeli consulate in Boston to formulate the creation of a smear campaign intended to stop the construction of a new Islamic cultural center.

Who the hell is 'Paul Kendall' and why should anybody be discredited for 'working with an Israeli public affairs office'???

I always thought you were Jewish. Meh.

Robert:
It is likely difficult to take the fools who wrote up your bio.
You will be vindicated.
Many thanks.

C'mon!Wikipedia is such a cute name!It can't be full of untruths,venom,slander,inaccuracies or back-handed snarkiness!

It's a big happy knowledge toy!Whee!!Knowledge Toy!!Easily edited by anyone!!!Whee!!

(click,click)
There!Abraham Lincoln was really a secret Muslim!!

Whee!!!!

For a good time, also see the Jihad Watch entry.
It follows a familiar pattern: links that do not substantiate the claim (i.e. a link to a Ralph Peter's article that in NO WAY mentions Spencer or Jihad Watch).
Or how about this

"According to Spencer, several businesses and government offices across the United States block the site through a firewall, because it is considered a hate-site, while Spencer characterizes this as censorship."

Actually, the matter was quickly resolved and traced to the efforts of a thrice convicted felon and all-around fraud who maliciously reports sites with which he disagrees to internet filtering services.

Suffice to say adjustments are being made.

If you really, want to get going, look at articles on jihadic conquests of islam or islamic history. Or try Israel. You could spend all day duking it out with Islamophiles on those topics.

Robert,

Noli nothis permittere te terere.

Wikipedia is the internet version of the bar know-it-all and has all the reLIEability of a two dollar watch.

As I typed the above I had a vision of Dr. Johnson's reaction to myriads of mindless, self-serving nincompoops editing his Dictionary.

Apoplexy, sheer apoplexy!

"Boswell! The Port!"

Looks like someone's made a few corrections rather quickly. Here is what it says now.

"Robert Bruce Spencer (born 1962) is an American writer specialized in Islamic studies. He has published seven books, including two bestsellers, on topics related to Islam and its relationship to violence and terrorism. He is a contributor to FrontPage magazine, directed by David Horowitz. He founded and currently directs the Jihad Watch and Dhimmi Watch websites that focus on Islamic terrorism-related events and various Jihad-activity worldwide.[1]"

Mr. Spencer, I am a new commenter to your sight even though I have enjoyed your writings and videos at Hot Air for a long time. So just a word of advice, ( I know that is very presumptive of me)...please don't over estimate the influence of the shoddy Wikipedia....Keep up the excellent commentary. I reckon your influence renders Wikipedia impotent...IMHO...

I never realized Wikopedia could be edited like this. Quite problematic to get any reliable information at all, though due to it's popularity, it's an opportunity for propaganda.

Very well written Robert. I wish I could write like yourself!

It's great to hear about who you are and what you have done. It's a pity Wikipedia is a tool for liars and is potentially ill-educating scores of people about important topics.

Dear Mr. Spencer:

It is only right and fitting that you speak up for your reputation, your credentials, your credibility, and the truth. Who better to speak in defense of your efforts but you? As you are engaged in a monumentally consequential struggle of ideas, your own reputation matters as much as that of Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

[Should we ardent "Spencerdanists"[cf Marranci] take to the streets, burn Ahmed Bedier and Ibrahim Hooper in effigy, petition Wikipedia, appeal to the United Nations General Assembly and commissions, or issue fatwas promising "dreadful doom" here and hereafter against your detractors? Put bounties on their heads? Tell us, O Great Leader?!!

Wikipedia seems to just legitimize well documented opinion.

Be thankful - it could be a lot worse. I had to personally edit the first line, which read "Robert Bruce Spencer (born 1962) is a Catholic American writer specialized in Islam criticism from a neoconservative point of view. (emphasis mine)"

Looks like someone's made a few corrections rather quickly. Here is what it says now.

Doesn't anyone know basic grammar at Wikipedia? Two grammatical errors in the above paragraph that still stands AFTER someone made corrections... Can anyone pick them out?

that he supports preconceived notions through selection bias - that he lacks genuine understanding and; that 'he has no academic training in Islamic studies whatsoever; his M.A. degree was in the field of early Christianity'.[15][16][17]

and of course Robert the problem is academics, if you don't have a degree. Do not consider what you have to say, to be valid. That's kind of funny because GW Carver was one the best academics of the 20th century, and he never had a degree and was basically self-taught. And I don't believe Einstein had a degree

Ernst notes that Spencer's articles have never been published in peer-reviewed academic journals, nor are his publications similarly reviewed or edited by a qualified scholar

unfortunately, that appears to be qeek speak that academics use to meanif you want to be published you have to go along with the preconceived biases of the so-called academic journals and and the so-called peers that unfortunately seem to be in the Saudis more often than not, bank account and make your review basically propaganda

and published by an academic or university publishers but by conservative presses such as Regnery Publishing.[21]
many of the great works of history have never been anywhere near an academic or university publisher
so if something is wasnot published. An academic or university publisher is not make it any less valid except in the eyes of academics

Given the abysmal, politicized state of academic study of Islam

I recall being forced to attend 2 weeks of Catholic School each summer with dykie looking nuns, as eager to smack us in the head as to teach us that Cathechism supplants the Bible (which few RC homes possess). What a collosal waste of time. Religion is a mental disease, and Atheism is its cure.

Yet again, will the fanatics explain to me exactly why their nominal deity created light suspended in mid space, and with no spatial reference to the nominal sources of the light? I love reducing god fearing bozos to where they base their religiosity on the "comfort" they get from worthless rote spews of rhetorical garbage, called: "prayer." If you want "comfort" then buy a f@#$ing dog. Or do needlepoint.

"Robert Bruce Spencer (born 1962)"

Wow Robert, I'm old enough to be your slightly older, but much prettier, sister! :-) ...oh and way taller too ....(like anyone cares).

Supercargo,

Didn't Marisol reprimand you for proselytizing here?

The Irrational Atheist

Robert,

I understand why you are ticked off by the malarky printed about you on Wikipedia.

However, I always considered Wikipedia as something only teeny-boppers played around with. What serious, intelligent, mature adult would expect any worthwhile treasure to be dug out of this trash heap of ignorance?

Regarding your being a "Catholic writer" -- and the implication that your catholicism influences your writing:

I put in my dues at a conservative Evangelical seminary studying Christian Theology. I am aware that you are Catholic and I assume that we would disagree on some important points of doctrine. However, in three of your books that I have read, along with countless articles on Jihadwatch, Dhimmiwatch and Frontpage, I do not remember ever reading anything that I could point to as strictly Catholic doctrine, or anything regarding the Bible or Christian teaching that I disagree with. I see no evidence that your Catholicism seriously influences your writing.

You focus your arguments on what Islam actually teaches; what is in the Quran and other Islamic texts. And basic Islamic history. None of this has anything to do with what denomination you happen to belong to.

Keep on doing what you are doing, and don't worry too much about the idiots on Wikipedia. I doubt anyone with half a brain considers this a reliable source of knowledge anyway.

Might you allude to the esteemed 'Rev. Jim Sutter', Anne?

Anyway, the obligatory response by Robert is indeed tedious. Tedious for him that he has to constantly do so.

Just a word for the wise for any possible new readers here this evening. Only disingenuine Islamists use wikipedia as a reference to support their propaganda.

Posted by: supercargo at March 6, 2008 11:14 PM

What gives? Why are atheists like yourself unable to grasp the imminent threat of Islam against all faiths, atheism included, for which you offer no solution I might add, without moving on to persue the lofty goal of swaying all people to abandom all faith globally?

Honestly, you come across as a spoiled yet wholely unrealistic dolt. Did Charles ban you or something? Are you looking for a new niche?

More importantly, can someone please rid us of this nuisance already?

Concerned Citizen--

Yep.

The Lady has the patience of a saint, oops, sorry supercargo, I didn't mean to offend your supreme yet sensitive intellect.

You tell 'em Robert!

This stuff happens with Wiki. Don't sweat it.

For those who are wondering, this is the version Robert was referring to. (Incidentally, Robert, not that it's any of our business, but is your middle name 'Bruce'? - sounds like a name somebody might have parodied to make you sound like that legendary king of Scotland).

I found this paragraph in the current version interesting:

However, for all the charges of Islamophobia, to date, no critic of Robert Spencer's has been able to refute on fact even one statement made in nearly 20,000 published articles and posts. Spencer is also noted as a passionate defender of Muslim womens' rights through his vocal opposition to the practices of stoning, female circumcision, and other abuses.

Concerning his Wikipedia biography, Spencer has remarked that "it is relentlessly biased, and the negative spin is thoroughgoing."[24]
As for the following damning paragraph still there in the current version
After receiving criticism, Spencer said he disavowed all neo-Nazis and racists present at the conference, and claimed he was unaware of their presence.[31]
In addition to the points Robert makes above, it also slyly implies that before and during the conference, Robert was pretty happy to be in bed with all the neo-Nazis and racists there, and only reversed course as a result of the criticism. Whoever edited the last version pointing out that nobody has refuted him to date omitted to edit this paragraph adequately.

I also checked the Jihad Watch article as Anne suggested: it's ugly. Incidentally, as Anne once astutely noted, who is so lame as to visit Wikipedia to learn about a website when they can visit the website itself?

Awake-- thanks!

Yet I submit Mr. Spencer is being disingenuous (or at least playing dumb) when he says: "as I have long stated here, any Muslim of good will who sincerely renounces these things is welcome to join our efforts."

But since "these things" are core beliefs of Islam, and since Mr. Spencer knows that, no Muslim could well "sincerely renounce" them without essentially renouncing his religion.

Can one really be considered a Muslim if one crosses out certain clearly-written lines merely because one finds them discomfiting or even barbaric? It's a contradtion.

Hence no Muslims are welcome here, are they?

Or at least, no Muslims as Islam is currently constituted.

no fun for Mr Spencer when the proverbial boot is on the other foot. perhaps he might take a little more care in peddling his hatred of Islam now he has seen what the Wiki can do to him.

Software is now available to trace who edits Wiki entries.

It would be interesting to see if it all leads back to CAIR.

Skouti

Are you saying well documented opinion is worth something?

The bulk of us would prefer to see the likes of you prove Mr. Spencer wrong with well documented facts.

Some people really do need those Colon Cleaners advertised on late night TV.

Wikipedia guidelines are quite strict with regard to descriptions that might be percieved as libel, also those not actionable under the law.

Bad passages can be removed with reference to the Wikipedia guidelines.

That conference again...:

There was NOONE present there with anything like sympathy for Nazi ideology. In fact, the conference had a strong *Jewish* presence!

People there were generally conservatives, like Daniel Pipes or Spencer himself. Fascism is the diametrically opposite to that. Jonah Goldberg: "Liberal Fascism" explains in detail why this is the case.

Any claims to the countrary constitute libel and should be regarded as such.

Yes, I was there.

Infidel Pride wrote:
"Robert was pretty happy to be in bed with all the neo-Nazis and racists there."

What you're putting here constitutes blood libel against both Robert and the conference participants.

Please, if you want to perpetrate such ugly attacks against someone, find some real Nazis instead, and go bonk their heads. They deserve it.

Any person can join Wikipedia and edit just about anything on it. I joined and I could erase most of it if I wanted. Like wise, I can edit what I want. Try it.

Slaps herself

I've now extended the Wiki article a bit with extensive documentation.

The reason Robert was unaware of any neo-fascist presence at the conference is simple:

There was none.

Henrik

Puhleeze, read my full sentence:

it also slyly implies that before and during the conference, Robert was pretty happy to be in bed with all the neo-Nazis and racists there, and only reversed course as a result of the criticism.

Congratulations on defending yourself Robert. So what if you were studying something else rather than Islam for your Masters; what does that have to do with anything other than to show that you are knowledgeable about many things???

Awfully nice to hear that you are a Catholic as this only increases your credibility since you have no "direct self-interest" or implied prejudice about Islam. Personally I have found your writings (books) and talks (the ones on YouTube) to be very impartial and highly accurate -- and I have looked for misrepresentations (as I never assume accuracy or impartiality in what I read). I have gained a great deal of insight from your works and thank you for your efforts; they are very much needed.

May you continue to be safe and blessed in your work to educate the non-Muslim world about these most crucial issues.

Best regards,
Jill March

"After receiving criticism, Spencer said he disavowed all neo-Nazis and racists present at the conference, and claimed he was unaware of their presence"

Mr. Spencer of course can thank neo-nazi crusader and Iraqi democracy project supporter Hemidactylus frenatus for this. Instead of quietly warning the rest of Animal Kingdom of his concerns on the side of liberty, he instead made a public spectacle of this.

Thus another insane charge Mr. Spencer refute..."that he knew" etc.

should say "anti neo-nazi crusader" above...

Which is a good thing...I will give him that. It is his strategy, and so many other things that is lacking...

Sorry, Infidel Pride. I tend to get a bit riled up about all this stuff, and read too superficially.

I'm just so sick of this 'fascism' thing. Before LGF brought it up, it never really had my interest, except for reading bits of history. After Charles threw around those evil bits, I had to read. And I found out a lot about what exactly makes fascism bad, not least due the wonderful Jonah Goldberg book. Nazism, of course, isn't just bad, it's evil. Which is why I usually refrain from even using the word, preferring euphemisms like "Germany in the 30's" instead. The mere presence of the word get people emotional...

The corrections I made to Wikipedia about the CounterJihad summit are gone already. Wikipedia *stinks* on controversial issues.

I fully concur with Mr. Spencer. By his own admission, he is Catholic, as am I. However, to even give the hint, as the Wiki article does, that he is a “Catholic Writer,” is absurd.

George Weigel is a “Catholic” writer. He has written extensively about Catholic “Just War Theory.” While researching a very respectable biography of John Paul the Second he received close personal access to the late Pontiff. I have attended multiple, EPPC “Simon” lectures by Mr. Weigel. And although I have never had any personal contact with Mr. Spencer, I have read all of his books. I can assure all that Mr. Spencer does not write as a “Catholic” writer.

They do share one similarity, however. They both defend Western Civilization. Before I read “Religion of Peace,” I had read “The Cube and the Cathedral.” It is an excellent book that I would recommend to Jihad.watch readers. I would describe it as “Oriana Fallaci, Academic - Light.”

The article above had to be written by Robert Spencer, as tedious as it must have been, because Wikipedia is widely used, especially by the young. It is not enough to dismiss it and say that "no one trusts Wikipedia." A lot of people find it convenient, to fish up a date or a name, and on subjects far removed from the political -- it can be useful and, what's more, often is not a bad guide. The problem is that in anything to do with subjects of great debate and moment, there are attempts to manipulate.

At the very top of that list is anything to do with Islam. And that includes all those who write about Islam. There is a war going on for the minds of men, but it is an entirely asymmetrical war. The Muslim side has many dedicated full-time propagandists, intent on doing whatever they can to hide the reality of the Qu'ran, Hadith, and Sira, and to present their own apologetics, in all its blend of nonsense and lies, to the Western public. Stupidity, ignorance, and greed help to explain the failures, until now, of so mnay Infidels to begin to come to grips with the meaning, and menace, of Islam, both for them and for its own adherents (who also suffer, though unwittingly, from Islam's inculcation of the habit of mental submission, and from the limits Islam imposes on artistic expression, on the free and skeptical inquiry necessary for the enterprise of science, and on individual liberties such as those of freedom of conscience, free exercise of religion, and freedom of speech).

Take a look at a dozen entries. Say, those for Spencer, and Ibn Warraq, and Wafa Sultan, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Pim Fortuyn and Geert Wilders and Oriana Fallaci.. See what is there now. Look into the retrievable history of that article’s previous edits. The Unsung Propaganda War being conducted by Muslims should be the topic of high school and college term-papers, of seminars and conferences, because it is hardly recognized.

And it is maddening that with the trillion or two trillion dollars squandered in Iraq, for an outcome that, if what is desired is achieved, will do nothing to weaken the Camp of Islam by exploiting pre-existing internal fissures, not a dollar can apparently be spent to hire full-time Internet specialists who will vigilantly monitor, and correct, those sources of information – such as Wikipedia -- that are now, rightly or wrongly, intelligently or naively, relied on by so many, especially students, for their information.

dont worry mr. spencer,i never trusted the wikipedia..i never did!even before this issue.keep up the good work and May God Protect you always.

As Infidel Pride notes, the version Mr. Spencer complains about is presumably this one[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Robert_Spencer&oldid=196032790], but as I write the current version is this one[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Robert_Spencer&oldid=197201309], where I'd rewritten the "controversial conference" section (CAIR doesn't come off very well in the result, I fear) before looking at this post, and then made some of the mods he suggests (deleting "began career in '79", which was, as he says, silly, and correcting the description of his thesis, which is however a rather charming link, I think, so I kept it.)

Wikipedia is useful, but not reliable and rarely coherent. Criticism of details like calling Spencer a "Catholic" writer is wrongheaded. Maybe some pro-Jihadist "POV warrior" stuck that in "to suggest that [he is]writing out of religious chauvinism" but it's simply not true that "It can only be so". There are simply too many "editors" of too many bents making too many changes for too many reasons to think you know why some detail like that exists when all you have is a result. Now, if someone sticks it back in and you look at the rest of his "contributions" and see a pattern, that's a different matter...

“Robert Spencer incarnates intellectual courage when, all over the world, governments, intellectuals, churches, universities and media crawl under a hegemonic Universal Caliphate’s New Order. Ibn Warraq

“America's most informed, fearless, and compelling voice on modern jihadism.”
Andrew C. McCarthy, Senior Fellow at National Review Institute
