She was afraid it would destabilize the region -- apparently in a way that a nuke in Tel Aviv wouldn't.
And after, the region is such a marvelous model of stability now.
"Condoleezza Rice opposed Israel’s attack on Syrian nuclear site," by Sarah Baxter in the Times (thanks to Pamela):
A MYSTERIOUS Israeli military strike on a suspected nuclear site in Syria last month was opposed by Condoleezza Rice, the American secretary of state, because she feared it would destabilise the region, according to a report this weekend.Rice persuaded the Israelis to delay their operation, but not to call it off, after US officials were presented with “jaw-dropping” evidence of Syrian nuclear activity, the report said.
The Sunday Times revealed two weeks ago that Israeli commandos had seized samples of nuclear material, said to be of North Korean origin, during a daring raid on a Syrian military facility to prove to the Americans that an air attack was essential.
According to ABC News, Rice led the opposition inside the Bush administration to the Israeli strike, persuading them to shelve initial plans to hit the Syrian facility in the week of July 14.
The nuclear samples seized by ground commandos remain unidentified, but defence and intelligence sources in Washington believe they may have been connected to uranium enrichment.
Ilan Berman, a Middle East expert at the American Foreign Policy Council, said: “The consensus is that Israel struck a nuclear facility and the probability is that it was linked to enriching uranium.”...
How many words are there for something that is completely and utterly useless?
In the case of Rice I could use them all and still be looking for more.
This is telling. I've often pondered the folly of the invasion of Iraq. Certainly military historians would have informed the Bush administration that Iraq would quickly turn into an expensive insurgency war.
Give Rice's misreading of this event, might one speculate that the Bush administration wanted more of a hands on approach in order to try to control the outcomes of the invasion of Iraq. They were foolishly attempting to micromanage the regime change yet discovered that they whole situation just blew up in their faces (pun intended).
History has shown that the bark of Muslim countries is larger than their bite. Consider that Libya was tamed with a few selected bombings.
I think that Libya and Israel's successes in taming Islamic aggression through limited selected bombing has is cheaper, has less chance of blow-back and does not destabilize the region.
Had the US attempted to selectively bomb key elements of the Hussaine regime, perhaps they would have found that Iraq became much less hostile.
Yes, yes, yes, Muslims will call for rivers of blod, but in reality very little really transpires. Unless of course they get nukes which they will be quick to use against non-Muslims and apostates.
Because Condoleezza Rice has done all she can to destabilize the region. She's a moonbat in disguise.
Israel usually knows what it needs to do, I am amazed that they must get US permission to do it.
Israel should just do what it has to, and explain it to Rice later...
Here's an example of stability that would be sacrificed:
Our already tenuous alliances with the various "friendly" militias in Iraq would be shattered if we were seen as enthusiastically allowing Israeli military action against fellow Arabs. There's only so much our dollars can do to counteract the resulting insurgent narrative that our forces are only there to guarantee Israeli hegemony.
The Israelis have proven to be a useful client state, especially since they've taken a break from attacking our warships (forty years since a time-lost missile attack, great work!), but it's not the job of the US to sacrifice its interests in Iraq for Israeli interests in Syria.
Sounder: Update your spellcheck. Cheney is not spelled R-I-C-E.

Rice is playing with innocent lives. To that extent, she is a terrorist supporter.
God what a turkey Rice has turned out to be!
I wonder though, what was her purpose in trying to get the Israelis to delay the action?
What, if anything, was she thinking to do with the time?
Did someone mention Cheney? Funny, but Condi Rice has in fact frequently been invoked as a possible presidential running mate, and frankly I think she'd make a hell of a VP.
For President Jimmy Carter.
Condeleeza is so pathetic. She might have a higher IQ than me but she is very lazy and stupid, not making efforts to learn what Islam is really about
Hmmm, was it really a nuclear site? There seems to be some question about that. Isn't the latest speculation that it was one of the sites where WMDs from Iraq were stored?
Unusual comments by Benjamin Netanyahu :
"We are benefiting from one thing, and that is the attack on the Twin Towers and Pentagon, and the American struggle in Iraq," Ma'ariv quoted the former prime minister as saying. He reportedly added that these events "swung American public opinion in our favor."
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/975574.html
SO he is saying that Israel has benefitted from American death!
Let me re-phrase for those who
Netanyahu is saying they are **BENEFITTING** from the **DEAD AMERICAN** of the twin towers!
WOW! Only an Israli can get away with comments like that , I reacll in post 9/11 time in the UK one os David Blunket's aide said 'now would be agood time to burry bad news' and the media hounded this comment and made her resign.
As for Netanyahu , well ~I suppose he knows too damn well that the yanks can do bugger all even if he pisses on their flag while staning on lady libery so.
Not only this , such things make you want to re-vist the '4000 Jews missing from the WTC on 9/11' story.
------ WOW I just did a google search for the '4000 Jews missing from the WTC on 9/11' story and I can't get that story any more.
Its been compltely taken off from the net even!
Pakrocks...still into that 911 conspiracy stuff eh?
Even if it could be proven that Bush/Israel somehow engineered it, what is anyone going to do, yell, holler, jump up and down? You are already doing that. Even if Bush was found guilty and hung from a rafter, the war on Jihadi terror, and it's birthplace, Islam, will continue. Get your joo hatred under control, it's bad for your digestion...
"The Israelis have proven to be a useful client state, especially since they've taken a break from attacking our warships (forty years since a time-lost missile attack, great work!)"
-From a poster above
This is undoubtedly a reference to a disastrous incident which occurred at the time of the Six Day War, where Israel mistakenly bombed a U.S. warship. This resulted in American deaths. That this was an intentional act of war on the part of the Israelis is a canard, wholly discredited, which anti-semites frequently cite to discredit Israel.
And the illiterate, twisted, hate-filled, and barely intelligible comments made by PakRocks, presumably a Pakistani Muslim, another poster above, constitute an excellent argument for banning the entry of Pakistani Muslims into our country, and into any civilized society altogether.
Because Condoleezza Rice has done all she can to destabilize the region. She's a moonbat in disguise.

Disguised as what?
Mr. Ghost: Citation on the WMD claim?
"Condoleezza Rice opposed Israel’s takedown of Syrian nuke site"
Christ, history will remember her for her inane overly large grin. That's it. High IQ, a wise fool.
Fine example of what happens when you mix Islam-is-a-religion-of-peace sugar and a pinch of PC-spice. You get a half baked foreign policy of dhimmi-donuts that tastes like Camel Urine.
Yeah Nukes in the hands of a terrorist state won't "destabilize" the region, but dealing with the problem will.
S-T-U-P-I-D!!!
I wonder if the experts, when estimating Iran's enrichment program, include those sites that are not physically in Iran, such as this one was?
Condhimmi Rice generally opposes any anti-Islamic assertiveness, whether Israeli settlements or the use of the military option on Iranian or Syrian WMD facilities. Her likening the Palestinian jihad to the American civil rights struggle was simply ignorant.
Her placement by Bush in a central decision-making role probably accounts for much of the appalling naivete surrounding Annapolis, as well as the democracy-is-just-around-the-corner illusions about Iraq and Afghanistan.
I remember reading that someone asked her if Islam had anything to do with the War on Terror and she replied flat out "No".
If she's the veep nominee, that would show that the nominator is as big an idiot as she is.
I still have Republican (I'm a conservative) friends who get all excited thinking about a McCain-Rice run for the white house. Telling me it's the way the Rs can win in November.
Please, no. McCain is Bush^2.
Condi is a student of the USSR and Cold War doctrine. Apparently she cannot fathom islam and the true threat of the encroaching evil. Sadly these are not transferable skills. She falls back to what she knows… the communists. Unfortunately for us, the two are nothing alike and this mistake is going to cost lives.
This woman, Dr. Rice, is in my opinion, one of the greater disasters of the Bush administration.
The greatest disaster was, and still is, President Bush's stubborn refusal to examine the doctrines of the Koran and the Hadith, in order that he might gain some real understanding of what we're up against. He could have gotten that valuable info from Stephen Coughlin right there at the Pentagon - but I think Coughlin just doesn't fit the "Religion of Peace" template that Mr. Bush has obstinately required from his minions.
The more 'peace' pressure on the Israelis that Rice et.al. initates, the more catastrophic events take place in the good old U.S of A.
Carter visits Hamas and dead Yassa-hairy-fats grave and a earthquake hits Mount Carmel, Ill. On Bill Koenig's web-site Watch.org, he has tracked for years the astonishing number of natural(?) disasters that follow each pressure play that Rice and others have inflicted on Israel. Fires, floods, earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, and the 'perfect storm' that hit Kennebunkport right after Bush 1 pressured Israel with this folly called the 'Road Map'. Each disaster a pot hole in that road to nowhere!
Question--Did the Israeli pilots hit just a nuke facility or did they hit Syrias stash of Saddams WMD'S that he transfered just before the war. Speculation is they did both. A surprising moment of clarity for the usually clueless Olmert, I think.
All because of an incorrect world-view that our leaders have about Israel's place in history at this time and an astonishing 'diss'-regard of God's forever Covenant with the nation, land, and that city that He loves.
This from a woman who thinks the Palestinians are being oppressed by Israel and wants Israel to give up all the land, even the pre-1967 land.
The greatest disaster was, and still is, President Bush's stubborn refusal to examine the doctrines of the Koran and the Hadith, in order that he might gain some real understanding of what we're up against.

.. and still greater disaster is that Americans let Bush get away on a daily basis, after:
- Manipulating elextion in his brother's state.
- Smoking cigars with Bandar Bush on 9/12.
- Lettting Bin Ladens escape.
- Stalling 9/11 Interim Commission.
- Blakening pages on Saudi Arabia from 9/11 report.
- Increasing Saudi student's visas.
- Granting "aid" to Saudi Arabia.
- Finally,mortgage bail-out for Palestinians: http://www.debbieschlussel.com/archives/2008/04/bushs_giant_mor.html#comments
Reflections upon the bombing raid against Syria, and conclusions that should be drawn therefrom.
Note to IDF, Mossad, Shabak/ Shin Bet, and anyone who is anyone in Israel.
The last time a jumped-up little monster leapt up and down spewing hatred and promising genocide, he very nearly achieved it. He killed six million Jews - exactly as he had said he would.
Now Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - and a great many others throughout the Muslim world - are saying EXACTLY the same sort of things as Hitler said.
Ahmadinejad, moreover, is pursuing nuclear weapons and nuclear long-distance missiles as fast as he possibly can, which indicates to me that his threats are not empty rhetoric/ bluster.
Conclusion. Do whatever you have to do to put a spanner in the works.
Tell no-one beforehand. No-one.
Then...BOOOOOM.
Say nothing afterwards. Total silence. Neither explanations nor apologies. Leave everybody to draw their own conclusions. The Russians, Chinese and USA can amuse themselves poring over their spy-satellite pictures and comparing before and after. The others who would like to have nuclear bombs (e.g. House of Saud, Egypt) might think twice.
Russia and everyone else will, secretly, be mightily relieved that a loose cannon - the horrible possibility of an entire Muslim nation prepared to use nuclear weapons in order to 'kill and be killed in the path of allah', poisoning half the planet with lethal fallout in the ultimate suicide-bombing assault - has been safely disposed of.
The Arab/ Muslim world, already awash in nonsense and lies, each conspiracy theory more bizarre than that which preceded it, will produce a fresh burst of mad-hattery...and shiver in their shoes, wondering when it will be their turn to experience the unexpected.
Remember Orde Wingate and the Night Raids. The principle still applies.
Rice failed, luckily.
But I'm surprised she didn't apologize to Assad and his Syrian fellow-terrorists as she apologized about (the faux story about) the "Koran flushing" at Gitmo.
She may play the piano well, but her foreign policy score is pure chopsticks.
Secretary Rice would make a fine wife and mother, but she should never be allowed to drive an automobile or operate a washing machine.
Still wondering why Condhimmi Rice didn't join Dhimmi Carter on the trip to Syria?
I once had a high opinion of Dr. Rice. But it's clear that the institutional incentives that ultimately corrupt all permanent diplomatic institutions and foreign services have had their way with her.
Advocates of freedom and American interests should draw the moral: you can't trust a "professional" diplomat to remain loyal to the interests of "his" country.

it is easier to screw up the world from two locations at once?
I like dumbledoresarmy's plan! If only it could be implemented, the sooner the better.

I have a number of colleagues from Stanford who almost froth at the mouth when they discuss her tenure as Provost there. The consensus is that she was picked for this position because of her gender and race, and because of her roots in the Civil Rights movement of the 60s, not because of any particular talent she possessed. Academia tends to be fairly liberal, so the fact that she was a black woman wasn't an issue. However, absence of talent is an unforgivable attribute, and she was deemed by many to be intellectually deficient when measured against the high standards that usually prevail at universities.
The same valuations that led to her being fast tracked for promotion at Stanford were apparently made in selecting her for Secretary of State. Her performance there has similarly been marked by less than stellar performance as at Stanford.
We can see many of the same forces at work with Barack Obama.
After reading through the comments I will stand on my soap box now and offer my views and perspective.
Condi is a mouth piece for that arm of the government that has always (right back to Washington and before) thought it's interests were the governments interests. Sometimes they were sometimes they were not. With the passage of time the institution has become more bureaucratized and set in it's own self interest.
The state departments view, with the USA being the leader of the world, is to not let anything destabilize the current political situation. Change is unknown and therefor not to be pursued. At it's basics is a question of power and equilibrium. It is a defensive position and assumes things will not change if we don't interfere.
As others have noted, it is naive and ignorant of the nature of man and countries. It is almost a self fulfilling prophesy in that the proud alway fall because they think themselves more important than others. Put another way, they think if they don't rock the boat then all will be calm.
Comments welcome?

This is nothing new. It was reported last October that Rice and Gates opposed the attack. Their theme was 'confront not attack.'
