WASHINGTON (AFP) - Attempts by Al-Qaeda to recruit Westerners has sparked deep concerns among US national security experts, who fear the country could be infiltrated by attackers with Caucasian looks and European or North American identification.
Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Robert Mueller told a congressional hearing Tuesday that the Al-Qaeda terror network was focusing its attention of recruiting Westerners because its leaders believed that bearers of valid European of North American passports could enter the United States more easily than other nationals.
The statement came two days after Central Intelligence Agency Director Michael Hayden made a similar revelation that Al-Qaeda was recruiting and training terrorists of Western origin.
"They are bringing operatives into that region for training -- operatives that, a phrase I would use, wouldn't attract your attention if they were going through the customs line at Dulles" airport in Washington, Hayden told NBC television last Sunday.
The new recruits "look Western" and "would be able to come into this country ... without attracting the kind of attention that others might," he said.
"They could be anybody," said Matthew Levitt, an expert with the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
Al-Qaeda could recruit radicals from Europe who would be able to come to the United States "on valid passports perhaps through visa waiver programs," Levitt said.
Ted Galen Carpenter, an expert with Cato Institute, believes it is very difficult to gauge the number of people open to such recruitment because it could involve Western-looking European natives like Muslims from Bosnia or Kosovo.

Levitt recently met in Paris with French counterterrorism officials whom he said have the same worries. "German officials and British officials are similarly concerned."
According to Newsweek, the CIA director's statements were prompted by a German investigation of a terrorist cell linked to an Uzbek group led by Fritz Gelowicz, a German national who converted to Islam and is now imprisoned in Germany.
But Brian Jenkins, a terrorism expert at Rand Corporation, believes that while while individuals coming into the United States could carry out terrorist attacks, "our greatest concerns right now are what I refer to as local home-grown terrorists -- American citizens living right here."
"In the attacks in Turkey, in the attacks in Spain, in the attacks in London, in the plots that have been uncovered in Germany and Denmark, and other places, these were not teams of terrorists ... being sent in from abroad, they were all from the inside," Jenkins said.
Doesnt help when the West bends over backwards to allow jihad recruitment centers to be built in the West.

In a way it's disappointing to read this but the edge of the angst doesn't come from the fact that the FBI is 'concerned'. The FBI's been concerned about this for years. Other law enforcement agencies, too, which understand their mission is to protect citizens, not to take it in the shorts for some PC Chief or Mayor or 'racial' interest group.
I've been banging this drum in my curriculum for about five years now.
What's disappointing is that most of the American public just does not give a damn. They don't care.

It does at least open the door for western intelligence services to plant more moles in that organization if the will and skill are there.
Yet in the American government, people such as Islam stay on, and the most obvious recruits -- Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews who grew up in the Middle East -- are not recruited but, we are told, discouraged from lending their valuable services to the American and other governments. Who knows better the ways of Muslims, who better can explain the real attitudes toward Infidels, who might better monitor Muslims here, than those who endured the dhimmi state?
The only group that is potentially as valuable, or more valuable, would consist of those apostates from Islam, some of whom have become Christians, others freethinkers. If those apostates have managed to jettison the Islam-prompted attitudes that sometimes survive belief in Islam, as Ibn Warraq, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Ali Sina, Wafa Sultan all clealy have, they would be the most valuable of all, in planning ways to demoralize Muslims, and offer campaigns of counter-Da'wa to diminish the appeal of Islam. For that appeal, to Infidels in the West, to the psychically and economically marginal, has to be diminished.
Islam must be identified not with "family values (Dinesh d'Souza) but with political, economic, social, moral, and intellectual failure. The connections can be made. An impartial observer must conclude that Western Civilization has outpaced Islam in all of these categories since the 7th Century. The only times Islam has flourished has been immediately after conquering thriving civilizations and then feasting off the ruins. When the survivors of those civilizations are converted, enslaved, killed or forced into dhimmitude, Islamic cultures retreats into its 7th Century model.
The only "good" I can see from this is now security services don't have to worry about "racial" profiling.
It's perfectly okay to pull aside a caucasion or asian for random searches, muslim or not. A white convert to islam will not get much sympathy for claiming profliling, except from the most liberal of sources.
Maybe, just maybe this will spill over into searching a broader spectrum of people under the guise of "terrorism". Since race is not the singular factor but being a "terrorist" is. Of course you can't point out the fact that they are muslim, but it may be the excuse needed.

Let's get one thing straight, this country insn't being infiltrated by anyone. They're being invited in.
They can't be too concerned if they allow Muslims to immigrate to this country and attain U.S. citizenship. If they put two and two together, they'd know that's where home-grown terrorists spring from.
Prisons are fertile breeding grounds for these recruits. Islam has a captive (literally) audience that is angry, bitter, and wrongly blames their incarceration on "the system".
Until we stop granting islam the same rights and privileges as legitimate faiths, and start identifying it as the true enemy that it is to humanity, it'll continue to breed and fester.

Im writing from Sweden. Things are looking really bad here. Well they have been for years actually - I live just outside of Malmö. The incidents that is refered to are all with the involvment of young muslim males.
Here in the surburbs we have young muslim males cruising in their vehicles all the time. Burglaries have gone up explosively - my family and I have had 3 burglaries in under 9 months! There have been 3 recorded rapes in this little surburb of 5000 people, a lot of violence against young swedes and many more incidents. We are actually afraid to go out in the evening. That was not the case just 3-4-5 years ago. People feel unsafe and sometimes I talk to others about moving eventually, maybe Norway or some place else in Sweden.
1-2 months ago I was at the local office in Malmø and a foreigner drew a gun after an argument with a lady. He shortly threatned her with the gun pointing in her face and then ran away. I came just minutes too late and had the whole incident described to me by a shocked witness. For days I waited for the medias to write about it, but I have not seen anything yet. I cannot believe that it was not reported, but I am afraid that the journalists are taking it the next step. That is, simply not to write about the upcoming crime at all!
I think all the people of southern Sweden have a feeling of that something is totally wrong at the moment. So much crime, so much violence. It has become normal like a colleague said to me.
“We better get used to it, it is just a natural development in our modern society with the liberal values. We have to put faith in the politicians, they know about this!” Inside I get angry at this naive and hopeless position. Why does it have to be this way? Are things in Denmark and other parts of Sweden not normal? The experts say that crime is not rising, that it is the same as it has always been, people just record more. It makes me sick to see these experts week after week, month after month.
But since I am from Malmö I cannot remember having experienced things like these ever:
In Malmö, I saw a man, 35-45, attacked by two young males a year ago and decided that I was going to testify, but the man who was attacked did not want to go to court. He lost some of his teeth and I helped him picking them up.
I have seen 3 car accidents the last 2-2½ years and I find this strange, but each time there were young muslim males involved in the car crash. One time the went totally nuts and were about to hit a younger lady who was in the other car and without fault with a bottle. And when the ambulance came they were about to fight them and one of them eventually got arrested when the police showed up.
Every now and then shouting and pushing in the streets when the muslims get into arguments with each other. It’s seems so agressive and swedes get threatned when they dare stop and look at the argument.
Last summer some colleagues of mine had rocks thrown after them by some minor youths (10-11-12-13 years old). One of my colleagues told them to “Beat it” and was hit by a rock in the back when he turned around. He had to go to the hospital and could not work for 3 weeks.
My nephew, 19 years old who lives with my brother and his wife in Malmö, has been attacked 3 times in a short period of time. Each time he was jumped by a gang of 5-10 muslim males - sometimes much younger than he is. There are witnesses, but they are too afraid to step forward and to talk to the police and meeting in court. The second time he was beaten up so severely that he had to go to the hospital for a week. The police arrested some of the attackers the second time, but since there were “no” witnesses they could not go further.
My nephews younger brother, 14, tells tales of frightened swedish teenagers who are terrorized by muslim males in school. Every day some one gets something stolen. They all know who did it, but the teachers shut their eyes and the police won’t do anything about it.
He can tell of calssmates getting robbed when they go shopping in Malmö. Some of the muslim males even bring weapons to school and flash them in the classroom to both impress and schock the other children. The school has been set on fire a few times.
I know that there are many good muslims out there and that it is only a minority of them who are causing all these problems. But you cannot say anything these days - immediately people get suspicious and ask if you vote for SverigeDemokraterne, which I believe is a racist party with proven nazi-relations.

There's your problem, Fredrik. You're afraid of what people will think if you vote for anything but a liberal party. Why CAN"T you say anything? Why can't you speak up against crime and intimidation? What liberal values ever extolled crime? Why would people get suspicious about someone who wanted law and order? Why are you afraid to stand up for your own right to exist?
If you want change you need to be willing to change your own voting habits. Instead you're snookered by people who say the opposition is "racist" or "nazi". Talk about political correctness!
The old axiom is as true today as it ever was: people in a democracy get the government they deserve.
Its very easy to find recruits and they are multiplying fast: in State and Federal prisons across the USA. The authorities are well aware of this; pray for their efforts to stop it.

That is a sad story, but all too common in the West now days, but you, and other Swedes, don't have to live with it. Whatever happened to the spirit of Charles XII?
I don't know who SverigeDemokraterne is, or if he's a racist or not, but if it's choice between a Swedish racist, and a Muslim dominated society, I know which one I'd choose. Besides, anyone who doesn't tow the Liberal multiculturalist line is going to be labeled a racist. If SverigeDemokraterne is calling for a stop to Muslim immigration to Sweden, and the expulsion of those who won't conform to the values and principles of Swedish society, that does not make him a Racist. It makes him a defender of Sweden and the Swedish way of life. Too often people allow themselves to be intimidated and beat down by name-calling politicians. And it sounds to me like that's what's happening with Swedes.
If Swedes Think of what Sweden will be like 10-20 years from now if some doesn't take a stand. That might help them to take a stand for their country.
Fredrik's story is very worrying.
The only thing I can think of, is that people like Fredrik and his relations and other non-Muslim inhabitants of places like Malmo (there are parts of south-western Sydney that are going the same way) are going to have to decide whether they are going to stand their ground or not.
If they intend to hold their ground, they will have to work together and act fast.
Community meetings and family councils involving people who have read Mr Spencer's and Bat Yeor's and Andrew Bostom's books, or Trifkovic, need to start happening; showings of 'Fitna' and 'What the West Needs to Know".
Try to educate the police...refer them to the story in Malcolm Gladwell's 'Tipping Point', chapter four, on 'Broken Windows' theory. If non-Muslim Swedes and the police realize that Muslims are actively setting a 'broken windows' process in motion (which is, I think, the case) then pushing back resolutely now, to 'mend the windows', resolutely enforcing the laws of Swedish civil society in EVERY detail, small as well as large, should have an effect.
Name the problem: Muslims in Malmo are engaging in bullying, threats and ghazi raiding, as per their observed behaviour on three continents over 1300 years, in order to cow the locals and seize territory. This has to be confronted and stopped while Muslims are still essentially outnumbered.
Start with the schools. If it's as bad as it sounds, surely it should be possible to create a volunteer security detail: train not only the teachers but non-Muslim parents, aunts and uncles or even fit, younger grandparents and retirees in unarmed combat/ self-defence (e.g kung fu, karate, judo,krava maga). Every classroom then has two or three such persons quietly sitting in the background, to provide backup for the teacher. Teacher aides/ 'parent helpers', but with serious muscle. Young thugs who flash knives get disarmed and the knife publicly blunted and cut into little bits with a hacksaw.
For good measure: train all the non-Muslim kids, ten and over, in how to handle themselves against a group, and against someone with a knife. Do Swedes have 'Scouts' and 'Cadets'? Such groups would be the perfect place for training.
Do Swedes keep dogs? Big dogs?
Identify non-Muslim community 'foci' - perhaps library, shopping centre, pub, church, synagogue, sporting club, swimming pool - and take a zero tolerance approach to any Muslim attempt to attack these places and the people who gather there. Same deal: make sure there are ALWAYS some people (physically fit retirees, uni students on a day they don't have lectures, etc) unofficially 'rostered' to 'be there', with the skills and confidence to intervene.
As regards churches: find out where the parish boundaries are, for any Lutheran and Catholic churches within Malmo. Then get a LARGE group together (not just the Christians, all non-Muslims within that particular patch) - research a wonderful old English custom called "beating the bounds" - and march around those boundaries, making lots of noise, visibly demarcating and reaffirming spiritual and physical control of the territory, and finish off with a community gathering, a picnic or dinner. If necessary, do so once a month.
All Christians - do a 'Jesus March' and prayer walks. Catholics - public street processions on every feast day and saints' day (and non-Catholic christians and secular Swedes- back up the Catholics, turn out to watch and provide protection by your presence). March right past the mosque! Banners, bells, torches, candles, BIG crosses, icons, incense, the works - you have to show, in every possible way, that you have NO intention of playing by the Rules for Dhimmis. Read the Christian scriptures out loud.
Organise BIG public celebrations of suitable Saints' Days, Christian and other non-Muslim feast days/ holidays, and Swedish national days.
RING THE CHURCH BELLS IN MALMO AT EVERY EXCUSE - weddings, funerals, baptisms, festivals - and do it LOUD and LONG. Dhimmis in Muslim countries were forbidden to ring church bells.
(And if there's a Chinese or a Hindu population in the neighbourhood: encourage them to do their thing - dragon dancers, firecrackers, processions - and all other non-Muslims turn out in force to support them when they do).
If the muslims travel in gangs then all the non-Muslims, be they secular, christian, jewish, hindu, or buddhist, will have to also do things in groups.
Sure the Muslim gestalt is scary, the moment it reaches a certain critical mass it seems to automatically start working like the mafia or a biker gang, it has a 'default' lynch/ mob mentality - but non-Muslims are much, much better at co-operating creatively, when once we put our minds to it, and so when we do finally opt for deadly force, it is devastating.
Of course, it's easy for me to throw out ideas. Where I live I don't - for now - face the naked daily on-the-street aggression that Fredrik is facing - I don't think there is even one Muslim child attending my children's primary school, at the moment, and my high-schooler hasn't mentioned any such, either. The nearest mosque is very small, and is about 5 or 6 km away - too far away to be directly affecting my daily life.
But perhaps we ALL have to start thinking - especially those of us who don't have an immediate problem at the moment, and so have time and space to think and plan - what WOULD we do if our street, our suburb, our town, our district, copped an influx of Muslims and started becoming a 'no go zone' for non-Muslims?

You have some very thoughtful suggestions, but the bottom line is that anyone, or group, that tries to organize resistence to these Muslim thugs, are going to be labeled racist, Islamophobes or Klu Klux Klansmen.
If the Authorities come down hard on anyone, it won't be the Muslims, it'll be on those trying to defend themselves and their way of life. That's the history of liberal, politically correct dominated societies.
When Swedes, and other Western people, start electing leaders that promise to stop all Muslim immigration to their countries, and promise to expell Muslims (along with their families) for the slightest infraction of the law, then you'll see a real improvement. Anything else is a half measure, and in the end, the Muslims will win.

It seems that all over Europe muslims can break the law with impunity. They are treated with kid gloves and permitted to get away with murder--literally! Why is that? Why won't the news media report what is actually going on in the streets?
It is obvious to me that Europeans are more afraid of the social stigmas attached to self-defense and self-preservation than they are of muslims, who are literally terrorizing them in their own countries. They are paralyzed by political correctness. Every nasty situation has a boiling point; even the most brow-beaten, self-hating, socialist wimps can take only so much abuse. As more and more people become victims of muslim thugs and experience the glories of multiculturalism on a personal level, that boiling point will eventually be reached and all but the completely suicidal, brain dead liberals will start fighting back.
The Marxist Eurocrats have certainly done a splendid job of brainwashing the masses in political correctness and the delights and advantages of multiculturalism, but cognitive dissonance resonates throughout the continent. The dreaded accusations of bigotry and racism are beginning to ring as hollow as they are. Unless they have contrived a formula to remove the human survival instinct from indigenous Europeans, how much longer can their insidious charade continue?

Don't think I don't know that little mosques can grow into big ones! I'll be keeping an eye and an ear on that mosque, via the local news and gossip, even though it isn't in my immediate neighbourhood.
In the meantime I see my job as warning friends, family, fellow churchgoers and my politicians, about jihad and sharia.

Meanwhile the flap over Wilders provides an 'in' to discuss how Islam reacts to criticism, and the threat Islam poses to freedom of speech and freedom of conscience.
My 17 year old son watched 'Fitna' with us and found it pretty confronting.
If 'Fitna' catches on and circulates among the 17-25 age group, and then those people, googling for more information, find their way to Mr Spencer and Mr Bostom and Bat Yeor and others, the tide of public opinion could shift pretty smartly.
