An update on this story. "Jimmy Carter says he likely will meet with Hamas," from Reuters:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said in remarks to air on Sunday that his upcoming visit to the Middle East probably would include a meeting in Syria with leaders of the militant group Hamas.
"I've not confirmed our itinerary yet for the Syrian visit, but it's likely that I will be meeting with the Hamas leaders," Carter said, according to a transcript of his interview on ABC News' "This Week."
The Bush administration and close U.S. ally Israel oppose the meeting, which would take place during Carter's nine-day trip to the Middle East that begins on Sunday.
U.S. policy has been to isolate Hamas, which seized control of Gaza last June, and to bolster pro-Western President Mahmoud Abbas, who rules the West Bank and is in U.S.-sponsored talks with the Israelis.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who sought Carter's counsel on his own previous Arab-Israeli peacemaking efforts ahead of a U.S.-hosted Middle East conference in Annapolis last November, called Hamas a "terrorist organization" on Friday.
"I think there's no doubt in anyone's mind that, if Israel is ever going to find peace with justice concerning the relationship with their next-door neighbors, the Palestinians, that Hamas will have to be included in the process," said Carter, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
"I think someone should be meeting with Hamas to see what we can do to encourage them to be cooperative," he added.
Carter, who served one term as president from 1977 to 1981, would be one of the most prominent Americans to meet with the leader of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal.
"We'll be meeting with the Syrians, the Egyptians, the Jordanians, the Saudi Arabians, and with the whole gamut of people who might have to play a crucial role in any future peace agreement that involves the Middle East," Carter said of his trip.
The 83-year-old former president has a long history of being involved in the Middle East. In 1978 he succeeded in negotiating the Camp David Accords that paved the way for peace between Israel and Egypt, but he has increasingly taken positions critical of Israel.
In a 2006 book, he described Israeli policy in the occupied territories as "a system of apartheid."
Jimmy the Dhimmi's ineffectual and misguided malaise of a Presidency played midwife to Khomeini's Iran, the Taliban's Afghanistan, and Arafat's Palestinian Authority. Now, if he can just bring forth a secular (read Judenrein) unified (read totalitarian) Holy Land, his lunacy--errr, legacy will be completely fulfilled!
Let me sharpen the point I wish to make--Carter's irresolution, double standards, relativism and moral obtuseness invited disaster, greased the skids under the Shah, helped destabilize Afghanistan, and underscored American weakness for the sake of a misguided moralism that countenances abominations like U.N. Resolution 3379, that "Zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination."
I erred. Confused about dates, I associated U.N Resolution 3379 with Carter's tenure in office--in fact, it was during Gerald R. Ford's.
"...Carter, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002."
This is supposed to mean something? Yasser Arafat, master terrorist, was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1994, so we know the value of this award.
Not only is Jimmy a dhimmi, he's a traitor as well.
"I think someone should be meeting with Hamas to see what we can do to encourage them to be cooperative," he added."
Thats about as much of an appeasement statement as you will ever see. Plus its easy for Dhimmi Carter to do so since it would be Israel that would pay the price, not Carter.

.. just as it will be hard-working, tax-paying Americans who pay the price for this: http://www.debbieschlussel.com/archives/2008/04/because_the_stu.html#comments
So much for American presidents/commander-in-chiefs/traitors!
I will defend to the death his right to have this opinion.
However, for him to act on that opinion is another matter. I hope that we have laws capable of prosecuting someone who impersonates a legal representative of the United States in foreign diplomacy, and violates governmental policy by attempting to negotiate on behalf of the United States without proper authority, with a group designated by the U.S. State Department as a specifically designated terrorist organization. If so, and the penalties include the death penalty, so be it.
"I think someone should be meeting with Hamas to see what we can do to encourage them to be cooperative," he added."
Hey, I know what'll get their attention...
Unfortunately, the World would frown on it.
A well deserved "snub" by Israel to Dhimmi Carter
Israeli leadership refuse to meet Dhimmi Carter and its security teams will not assist with protecting him (rightly so)!

How many times has the global jihad been assisted by fools such as these..........?
Benedict Arnold redux
I wonder if his opinions will change during his videotaped Steve Centanni style shahada.
"I think there's no doubt in anyone's mind that, if Israel is ever going to find peace with justice concerning the relationship with their next-door neighbors, the Palestinians, that Hamas will have to be included in the process," Carter told U.S. television network ABC News's "This Week".
Included in the process?
Dhimmi Carter has spent the last four decades in denial - or rather, in indulging a loathsome moral grandstanding whilst ignoring the pools of blood gathering around his feet.
Loathsome.
What is it about Liberals and their predilection to demonize Israel?
I visited an old buddy last year....met him at his sister's house in a near-by city. He and his sister were both Bush-hating Liberals. Well, this is not unusual in my neck of the woods....I didn't let our political differences prevent me from enjoying the visit.
Just before I was leaving, my buddy's sister - who was an otherwise very nice person and who up until then had at least sounded semi-rational in the expression of her views - volunteered the opinion that she "understood and respected the methods of the Palestinians"...(direct quote, so help me God).
My jaw dropped. There can be no doubt that she was referring to suicide bombing. I replied that "I could never understand or respect those who deliberately target non-combatants for murder".
This is a person who grew up in the same culture that I did...and yet her ethics and values had become unrecognizable...at least to me.
What the fuck is going on with today's Liberals?
Not only is Jimmy a dhimmi, he's a traitor as well.

Right you are!
He's Jimmy Cartraitor now - Carter is no longer appropo.
As further proof that Jimmy is rotten to the core on every issue our #1 worst president ever says the Beijing games should go on as scheduled, no boycott necessary. Somehow not much sympathy for the Tibetans. How is this explained? Common denominator to Jimmy's position on every issue? Is it bad for the U.S. or U.S. allies? -- then Jimmy is for it.
Disempowering Chinese Communists -- good for the U.S. -- Jimmy is against it. The lowest of the low -- garbage -- a traitor -- there aren't words enough to describe Jimmy Carter. Look at the company he keeps -- Castro, Venezuela's Chavez, Hamas' Khalid Mashaal.
I hope they take Jimmy hostage and demand ransom.
Would anyone care? no.
Carter's grandiosity has him thinking that by meeting officially now with Hamas (he has met with them off-the-record for years, according to Carter himself, actually giving them aid, comfort, and advice)he will make them more acceptable and thus get international pressure working against Israel. What is actually happening is that the world is seeing his true colors and Carter himself is being marginalized. The media will find it a little harder to give him the free pass he always gets.
Cornelius...I experience the same thing on a local forum, with local liberals. Numbers of them are hate Israel and Jews, and next to blaming Bush for 'everything', that goes wrong, the Jew's are responsible. Liberals seem to be clones of each other. Every once in a while there is a maverick, who does not fit the mold, but over all, I agree with Savage, liberalism is a mental illness. I never pass up an opportunity to explain that too them in detail. Boy do they hate me. They really hate me when the subject of Islam or jihad come up. That's when I get the coveted honor of being called a racist, a bigot, a Islamophobe, and a hate monger, all in one sentence without periods. When that happens, I know I am getting somewhere. One interesting thing I found out, is that liberals hate to be referred to as liberals. For some strange reason that seems to set some of them off.
Another thing they can't stand, like most muslims, is to have someone poking fun at them. They always take it seriously and break out the daggers.
If the local liberals knew who I was, I would have to shop out of town, and come out only at night.
To sum it up, there is something wrong with the bodyliberal, I am not exactly sure what it is, but it 'is' weird...
I hope they take Jimmy hostage and demand ransom.
Would anyone care? no.

I wouldn't care. Maybe they'll make him part of their circus act by dressing him up as a cleric. I heard they're always looking for new clowns to perform as talking heads.
SWAMI: "Every once in a while there is a maverick, who does not fit the mold, but over all, I agree with Savage, liberalism is a mental illness."
All my brothers and sisters except one are Liberals. Many if not most of my friends are Liberals. All are good decent people.
When I think back to my own Liberal period, I realize it was ignorance more than anything else...a nebulous world-view that I believed at the time was open-minded but was in fact undisciplined, uninformed and incoherent...(musn't overlook the profound sense of moral superiority one derives from "bleeding" for the under-privileged).
But even then, I could recognize an obvious sociological evil when I saw one. I recognized communism as such and was always a national-security hawk vis-a-vis the Soviets...and I certainly recognized Palestinian terrorism as such.
Now that I've grown up, while I can see the bleeding-hearted agenda for what it is...I can at least comprehend the mindset that embraces it. What continues to mystify me is the apologia for terrorism and religious fascism (Islam) by the very people who are so contemptuous of Evangelical Christianity.
I've come to realize that anti-Americanism is the key...anyone who is opposed to America is somehow acceptable to the Libs.

Only demand ransom? I can think of a few other things these thugs are capable of doing, and are known for doing, none of them very pretty. Although one wouldn't wish any of them, it would be sweet irony, wouldn't it?
"What is it about Liberals"?
Well, I can't speak with authority, because I'm not a liberal, but here's what I think.
Even though they won't admit it, most liberals are still stuck in the Sixties, in that they cherish rebellion for the sake of rebellion.
Whether correctly or not, Christianity is closely associated in the minds of many people with the "establishment". Liberals are predisposed to be against anything they perceive to be "establishment", therefore their gut reaction will always be to support any other religion (e.g. Islam) over Christianity.
Likewise, Christianity and Judaism are closely associated. So, on matters concerning Israel, liberals will tend to oppose Israel for the same reason.
Basically, in the minds of most liberals, opposition to Christianity = opposition to Israel = rebellion against authority.
Can someone help me with reading matter so that I can reply forcefully when people say "Well, the Palestinians were there first. The Jews did take their land from them". I need to formulate my reply much better than it is at present. I need to back it up with facts.
Thanks in advance.
Ms Pig from Australia
I think it is time for the Mossad to send in Hamas' Jew-Eating Wabbit. I hear Jimmah is afraid of bunnies, especially waterbunnies.
Jimmy made a better peanut farmer - maybe it's time to return to his roots.
Porky,
1) A remnant of Jews have lived continuously in "Palestine" for 5000 years.
2) Under the Muslims, these Jews were subject to all manner of legal liabilities and episodic pogroms, including the killing of scores of Jews in Hebron by Muslim mobs in 1929.
3) The Ottomans began selling land to Jewish immigrants in the 19th century, long before the creation of Israel. These transactions were entirely legal by every international standard.
4) The Jewish immigrants of the late 19th/early 20th century allowed the desert to "bloom" with their entrepreneurship and productivity; it was at this point that Muslims from Egypt and elsewhere began immigrating to Palestine in search of work and opportunity. Yasser Arafat was just such a Muslim. The fact that he was born and raised in Egypt and was an Egyptian by every criteria has never detracted from the contrived narrative that he was the "father" of modern Palestine.
5) The UN voted to partition Palestine in 1947 with an Jewish and an Arab half. The Jews accepted partition, the Arabs rejected it and went to war with the intention of seizing the entire country. What they (the Arabs) subsequently lost in war, they expect to be rewarded with as a compensation for the "injustice" perpetrated against them.
While visiting, Dhimmi should convert and change his name (most Muslims have multiple names) to something like: BAASIM DIYAA UDEEN CARTER...AND then go shopping for some fine flowing robes...then throw away the razor and shaving cream..and announce he has re wed..four more times..
Thank you Cornelius.
Carter used to raise peanuts. You are what you eat.

He was good at raising taxes too!..
If even Mr Peres tells you to take your shtick elsewhere, its way past time to move on. Jimmah's gimmick reminds me of one Robert Fisk. When in Israel, among the Jews, condemn in the most uncompromising terms terrorism and the targeting of civilians, but later on in their writings justify the same on behalf of the misunderstood Muslims. Words don't mean anything at all to these hacks.
Jimmy (peanuts be upon him) thinks he's going to save the world - ironically - he's making it more dangerous.
"While visiting, Dhimmi should convert and change his name" -- pulsar182
Yeah, to something like "Hamastan Carter"
On further thought, if "Stockholm Syndrome" describes firmly bound captives sympathizing with -- and ultimately adopting the views of -- their terrorist captors...
"Carter Syndrome" could come to mean NON-captives who sympathize with -- and ultimately adopt the views of -- terrorists who are NOT their captors.
Which one is there more of an excuse for?
"Jimmy (peanuts be upon him)"
That's a good one Champ :-D
:-)
Why don't we catch and release him at 500 feet?
Cornelius,
Thank you for taking the time to post your short and accurate history lesson on Israel. I copied it to my "list of cool things" file and will use it every time some idiot starts bashing Israel, if you don't mind.
As for Jimmy the Dhimmi, I have found that every time I read about his antics my blood pressure rises. Someone said that things of no value never die. This certainly applies to this pashtudnik.
Best wishes,
A person from the rural US.
Your very welcome 'Never Submit'...and I share exactly your sentiments on Jimbo...he was a lousy President and has evolved into an even worse 'former-President'.
"I think someone should be meeting with Hamas to see what we can do to encourage them to be cooperative," he added."
Send the Terminator. Not the Arnold version but the newest model. That might encourage them to be coopperative.
who exactly RE-ELECTED this dangerous fool?! He doesn't represent this country since he wasn't democratically elected. Last time I checked he was out of office in 1980.
Is there no law that would forbid former officials from acting in an official manner once they are out of office?
Methinhks Bush should open his yap and say that the dhimmi is traveling as a private cicitzen. But then he shares the agenda.
The money that is going to waste on secret service protection!
That money saved would buy a wholotta Habitat for Humanity!
When we take account of the origins of the modern State of Israel, we should remember that 800,000 Jews who were expelled from Muslim lands, where they had lived for millenia, found new homes in the newly-founded Jewish State, and learned a new national language--Modern Israeli Hebrew.
