I guess he never heard that name. Since I am totally unfamiliar with this person, I have no idea his thoughts, if any, about Islam or muslims. But I do know that intelligent people are often duped because they were not quite intelligent enough. Capacity to know is not the same thing as knowing. Intelligent people have capacity, but the space is often filled with none sense. That's what learning is for. There are very intelligent people locked up, or always in trouble because their intelligence is not running things in their head (happens to me all the time). Ego/emotion/desire is doing that.

I think for many males, conversion to islam is quite attractive.
You can have up to 4 wives.
You can have a temporary marriage (i.e., engage with prostitutes at your whim and it's OK in the eyes of allah's apostle).
You can beat your wives.
You can divorce your wife/wives just by chanting "I divorce you" three times.. No legal costs!
You can engage in seditious activity against your government and not be prosecuted because you are a protected class.
You are automatically superior as a moslem; the dhimmmi pop owes you and should worship the ground that you walk on.
You can vent your frustrations and murderous tendecies openly with no fear of prosecution.

I usually read while I'm booting up my glacially slow computer. I was skimming through the Examiner food section just now, which is full of recipes for Passover. They have an article about a chef who combines Jewish food traditions with the healthy emphasis of "California Cuisine". An excerpt:

Here's another by-product of our society's obsession with multiculturalism and our rejection of assimilation as an obvious and universal good. I wish I could say that for everyone it was an unintended consequence.
We need to reject the politically correct, and supposed "logic", of notions like moral relativism, and of multiculturalism, and bring ourselves to tell our own young people with honesty that Western Civilization is a superior good and worth preserving.
This should be done with a certain unmistakable level of intensity that expresses concern for their future freedom and well being, as well as the general progress of civilization. We need to remove competing notions as an "equal good" or an "alternative way of knowing" from our school curriculum too.
We're seeing a lot of bleed over in news stories and videos today that are partially rooted to this "failure to communicate". We see it in school violence and the Marxist underpinnings of Liberation Theology and Global Warming Theology.
I agree that diversity of outlooks, on any number of things, can often lead to more imaginative and innovative ideas; unless the outlook is that you should be killed or enslaved, and your civilization erased. Islamic traditions, ethics, and values had their chance in the marketplace of ideas, and have shown themselves to be unable and unwilling to compete fairly, honestly, and nonviolently.
If this is how Islam wants to compete in the arena of ideas, then the West should go for it, and show them how it's really done when we're serious about it. Just an idea that our government, I think, should reconsider.
Perhaps this particular kid had a screw loose from the beginning. Perhaps he would have done this regardless of his exposure to these foolish ideas that have been loosed upon us, but I doubt it would have been as likely.

Maybe he neglected to be circumcised when a child, and as part of his renewed commitment to Islam decided to attend to this little matter. That would certainly produce an identity change.

I am a little tardy with this response. I read somewhere that knowledge + experience + understanding = wisdom. If someone is a dollar short on one of these, they may be smart, or even clever, but not wise.
So far as I can tell from following the link and reading the full story, he is neither a 'born Muslim' in the classic sense, nor a 'convert', strictly speaking.
He is the son of a marriage between a (nonreligious? Christian? nominally Christian?) Englishwoman and an Egyptian (presumably Muslim - nominally so?) immigrant.
The marriage broke up 2 years ago - Mum moved out, taking Andrew with her, and now lives with another man (it would be interesting to know whether the Other Man is non-Muslim).
Given that both the sons have 'christian' names - 'Peter' and 'Andrew' - I'd almost hazard a guess that Mr Ibrahim Snr was a nominal or even a 'secular' Muslim...or posing as such.
However: it's interesting that the son of such a marriage would, after his parents broke up, 'identify' with his father to the extent of zealously pursuing his father's religion.
Questions worth knowing: did Ibrahim Snr attend a mosque? Did the family observe any Muslim practices?
Perhaps the real moral of this story is for Infidel women: Never Marry A Muslim, Your Son May Become a Jihadi Terrorist.
