Man has Al-Qaeda links -- Canadian visa? No problem

Dudley, we hardly knew ye

How did he get a visa? Have steps been taken to ensure that this kind of thing doesn't happen again? What do you think?

"Man linked to al-Qaeda able to get Canadian visa," from the CBC (thanks to Cindy):

CALGARY (CBC) - A man suspected of having links to al-Qaeda managed to secure a visa to live in Canada and was later arrested at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, CBC's French-language service Radio-Canada reported Thursday evening.

The man, who is of Pakistani descent, obtained a visa to temporarily reside in Canada from the High Commissioner in London, according to a secret document sent to federal Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day from Canada Border Services last July.

The note, obtained by Radio-Canada, does not reveal the identity of the man but says he is implicated in al-Qaeda's mass destruction weapons program.

CBSA agents arrested the man on July 12, 2007, when he arrived in Toronto from Newcastle, England. While verifying his passport, they determined he had been flagged by Canadian authorities.

Customs agents interrogated the man. He then requested to be returned to England while renouncing his visa, but the pilot wouldn't let him on the plane.

He spent one night in a Toronto detention centre before being deported back to England.

British authorities were alerted about his return, but it's unclear where he is now.

Even better!

Haha!

A Mounty always gets his man...

Both Canada and Pakistan are members of the British Commonwealth. Then again, Pakistan was "suspended" from the Councils of the Commonwealth last November because of Musharraf's continued imposition of emergency rule. Even so, most members, as fellow members of the Commonwealth, are said to afford each other special treatment when it comes to immigration and visas. No reason this shouldn't happen again and again and again....

Question: Did this POS have British residency or citizenship? If not, why wasn't he sent directly back to his country of origin? Unfortunately, once in Europe, he can pretty much go to any country in the EU, with no border controls to worry about.

"he is implicated in al-Qaeda's mass destruction weapons program." This is just "code talk" for the Spreading "World Peace" program.

No wonder it is so hard to combat the terrorists..even when they are handed to you, you cannot find them...

Not that the Americans are any better..Somalia told the then President Clinton, : "We have this terrorist guy Osama Bin_Ladin, do you want him?"

Clinton replied, "Well shucks, No...."

...or was it the Sudan?...yes, it probably was..It is late and I am tired..

OT, but interesting headline found on Drudge report:

"DETAINEES' MENTAL HEALTH IS LATEST LEGAL BATTLE AT GITMO..."

laughable..

just a thought, was he met at the airport in England by Muslim Bobbies or by members of Parliment.?

Looking on the bright side, at least he wasn't allowed to slip away in Canada and make his way to the US border.

Canadians did something at least half-right. (Speaking as a Canuck, I have to point this out before the anti Canadian faction gets its two cents worth in.)

ImNoDhimmi,

You've got a point. The guy was sent home after one night in Toronto. Had the visa been for the US the guy would probably have an immigration lawyer and would be permitted to stay in the US "while his case was under investigation". Our newspapers would be filled with the "you only hate me because I'm Muslim" rants about evil Americans. (Just how evil do Canadians think we are right now? At the very least, they must think we're gun-toting international outlaws!)

Should have just tased him to death, they do it to ordinary people anyway, why not to the terrorists?

well, at least Dudley DooRight rescued Nell from the railroad tracks, he did not put her there..

If Americans are too courteous to say this about their northern neighbour, then let a Canadian say it: Canada has a record of cavalierly issuing visas and landed status which is somewhere between the ludicrous and the sinister.

News stories reflecting how carelessly this is done proliferate, but neither they nor public opinion ever has the slightest effect on policy. We have suffered again and again for this irresponsibility, and it carries on apace with the triumphal abandon of mosques springing up like mushrooms all over Europe.

With a Supreme Court apparently dominated by air-headed boy scouts, and an immigration authority which seems to have virtually no policy at all, I am afraid that the United States would be well advised to take a highly sceptical attitude toward Canada's trustworthiness as a partner in the war against terror.
