If you use google maps to get a birds eye view of Mekka and the cube, you can see that it is the center of the universe, but every place in the universe is the center of the universe, so that's really not unique. What is unique is that the cube, or square, is the symbol of earth (Thats earth as in air, fire, water and earth), but golden yellow in color, not black. Yellow is light, black is the absence of light. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness does not comprehend it. The black cube shuts off the light, inside it is perpetually in the dark. The black rock continues this theme and adds 'density'. If Islam has any powerful demons, this is where they reside. This could mean to some, that the Ka'aba is the gateway or portal to Hell. Where demons reside in density. This is the Qlipoth of the Cabalist. The regions below the earth, where the big named demons hangout. Satan is in charge. Eventually the Ka'aba must be destroyed. What a bunch of morons.

Accurate timekeeping had been a growing concern of Europeans since the rennaissance. It became a more urgent issue with the development of other accurate modern inventions--steamboats, the telegraph, and especially the railroads.

The earth orbits the sun constantly, so noon in one town can be just a few minutes different from noon in a neighboring town. Small towns often adopted the timekeeping of a nearby city--in many ways, this was more efficient, but it made for the bizarre phenomenon of railroad schedules often indicating that a train would reach a station several minutes *earlier* than the last station where it stopped.

What this meant is that people were rarely certain exactly when they, or their goods, needed to be at the depot. Even worse, it made connections between conveyances almost impossible to coordinate--on paper, passengers on the train from Manchester might have five minutes to connect with the train to London--in reality, it missed the train entirely by two minutes.

Not surprisingly, the British railroads were the first to adopt Greenwich Mean Time, in 1847.

So why Greenwich? Is there some sort of mystical alignment claimed for Greenwich, as this panel in Qatar claims for Mecca?

Certainly not. many scientists had been working on the concept of what would later be designated as "time zones"--in Britain, France, Germany and the US, most notably. The most sophisticated work, and the model which eventually was adopted by most of the world, was developed at the Royal Naval Observatory, just south of London at Greenwich.

Greenwich is important for that reason, but for that reason only. The "prime meridian" could have been arbitrarily set anywhere in the world, and have worked just as well, as long as it was universally agreed to.

Sure, the existance of the British Empire, with its great importance in world trade and diplomacy, was a factor in the adoption of GMT. But it was not "imposed"--there was no need. Most industrial nations were quite eager to embrace a practical, efficient system of univeral time.

Only France, which had a turbulent relationship with Britain over most of the nineteenth century, did rather balk at the prime meridian being located so near London. French scientists suggested to their British counterparts that they "split the difference" between London and Paris time, which would set the prime meridian somewhere in the English channel. English scientists, at no surprise to anyone, were not terribly enthused at the suggestion.

It would have been no more than symbolic, anyway, and France did eventually formally designate GMT. By this time, most French industry had already long since adopted its use.

There is no indication that any "Muslim scientists" were doing any work on acurate timekeeping. In fact, the first public clock anywhere in the Muslim world was installed in Constantinople in 1849 by a British clockmaker, a Mr. Vulliamy. The clock's installation was rabidly fought by Muslim religious leaders, who felt that an infidel device keeping accurate time would undercut their own authority as determing when Muslims had to pray.

By the way, these advanced scientists in Qatar, so valiently fighting to replace GMT, clearly missed the memo that GMT was already replaced, uh, thirty-six years ago. In 1972 GMT was superceded by an international system rather blandly named Coordinated Universal Time. Time is calculated to within fractions of a second on a system of atomic clocks.

This made me laugh and I immediately thought about a comment by Carsten Niebuhr. I don't know how many in the Anglo sphere have any idea who Carsten Niebuhr was, you most likely have to be Danish or German. Anyway he was a member of a Danish expedition too the Yemen in the 18th century, as far as I know he was the only one to survive. His travelogue is very well known in both German and Danish. He gave a wind up clock to a local sheik who was duly impressed. The only problem was that the sheik had to employ somebody to wind it up, who if I remember was Jewish. Now they want to change the meridian and they can't even wind a clock. The mind boggles at the arrogance.

I'd like to point out that time zones are set according to when the sun is in the sky. If these "scientists" are dissatisfied with their time zone, they really only have G-d to blame.

Or do they mean that they want Mecca to be longitude 0? Those are two very different things.

Reminds me of some hideously stupid news reporting of a SoCal fire a few years ago: "The firefighters have extra problems putting this fire out because daylight savings time brought darkness an hour earlier. The helicopter sorties cannot be flown after dark."

UCT is still GMT time. Its just adjusted to UCT.

With regard to navigation GMT has not been replaced, we still need a known starting point.

Longitude is expressed as either west or east of GMT.

I took it to mean they want to have longitude 0 in Mecca, or MMT (Mecca Mean Time). Maybe they think it's prestigious. Who knows?
But I could see them using it to coordinate attacks in different countries once it becomes a standard setting. Great shorthand. No need to say noon, NY time or 3 p.m. Paris time for instance.

The weird thing is, these ijits are serious. I suppose they also expect us to change our maps to show zero degrees longitude going through Meccaaaaah.

They can redraw their own maps all they want. Maps would be a relatively minor inconvenience compared to the rest the infrastructure that would be unusable by them. Just think about the needless shivers that the Y2K hysteria put up everyone's spine. Imagine the real problems that could result from an Y0.622K reset. When these goobers say they love death more than we love life, they don't even know how serious they are.

In some ways it might be a good thing, since they'd still be counting their fingers when they received their ass kicking.

It truly is remarkable what's going on, breezy. That the Barbarians feel they can even make such a proposal is demonstrative of how far out-of-control the Mohammedan situation is.

In conclusion: if you are in a different time and in a different place than you think you are, then you are either delusional or devoutly Muslim. (One does not necessarily preclude the other.)
