So evidently Mohammed Rasheed (Nicky Reilly) wasn't a freelance jihadist or a random fellow acting out his random mental illness at all. He seems to have been part of a jihadist group. And two more men have been arrested in connection with the attack.
"Exeter explosion: 'bomber' Nicky Reilly was sent text of encouragement," by Duncan Gardham for the Telegraph, May 23 (thanks to John):
A Muslim convert accused of trying to set off three homemade nail bombs in a packed shopping centre in Exeter received a text message of encouragement on the day of the attacks, the Daily Telegraph has learned.Investigating officers suspect Nicky Reilly, 22, who has learning difficulties, planned to commit suicide but do not think he could have constructed the bombs without help.
He received a message on his mobile phone on the day of the attacks which officers believe amounted to a "message of encouragement."
“He has a very low IQ and has received treatment on more than one occasion for mental illness. He would be very easily led," a police source said.
“This really does mark a low point for Muslim extremists. We are all horrified by what has happened here."
The comments came as armed police investigating the bombing arrested two men outside a cafe today....
Reilly had allegedly been using a type of rudimentary bomb not employed by Muslims [sic] extremists in Britain before which was constructed from sodium hydroxide, aluminium foil strips and an essential oil, combined with kerosene.
The source confirmed that there were nails in the bag containing the devices, one of which partially detonated in the toilets of a restaurant in the Princesshay centre. The other two failed to go off....
"If it had gone up it would certainly have caused a huge fireball and the idea he was doing that in a family restaurant packed with children is awful."
Special Branch officers were monitoring a group of alleged radicals in Plymouth, where Reilly lives with his mother, which was based at a local mosque but Reilly was on the fringes of the group.
The source said: "As part of our operations to monitor the activities of radical groups across the country we were aware of this group and of Reilly himself but he was right on the fringes of a group that did not appear to be planning any attacks....
Local people claim Reilly, who changed his name to Mohammed Rasheed, was "brainwashed" by a group that met at a fish and chip shop.
which was (wait for it....) based at a local mosque
The source said: "As part of our operations to monitor the activities of radical groups across the country we were aware of this group and of Reilly himself but he was right on the fringes of a group that did not appear to be planning any attacks....
Do they possibly think it is about time to actually go into these Mosques to see what goes on, or is watching the preferred method????
“He has a very low IQ and has received treatment on more than one occasion for mental illness.
low IQ seems to be helpful when becoming a muslim.
“He has a very low IQ and has received treatment on more than one occasion for mental illness. He would be very easily led," a police source said."
As opposed to tall the other morons who make the Islamic universe?
"low IQ seems to be helpful when becoming a muslim."
Not just helpful, it's a prerequisite.
How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries
Shhh, cover this up, distance it from what it is part of, maybe we wont notice...
we notice.
It really is sick. It is gut wrenching sick that our policy makers seem to have a blind eye to real cause of these violent acts against non Muslims.
Brainwashed at a fish and chips shop. Now we really are in trouble. What was the order? One chips, two pieces of fish and three paradise bombs please.
It seems most everywhere in the West that one finds converts to Islam, they are ordinarily not all that intelligent or possesed of real self-respect. Certainly that's true here in America. I'm encouraged by this since I never came across a passage that said the stupid and confused will inherit the earth.
“This really does mark a low point for Muslim extremists. We are all horrified by what has happened here."
Hmm, and here I thought that the low point was using little children, or females with Down Syndrome.
Message to U.K. END MUSLIM IMMIGRATION ALREADY OR LOSE.
Good thing that his handlers were either unable or unwilling to outfit him with more dependable ordnance. It could have been a real bloodbath. Same thing with the cock-up in front of the Royal Haymarket Theatre and the subsequent Glasgow Airport incendiary ramavan. How long will the UK's luck hold?
ah, the joys of multiculturalism!
Another "low point"? Every time I access this blog, the jihadists keep accessing "low points".I want to see the movie.
"Nick Reily and the Temple of Doom"
Good word, MP.
And just how long will our "luck" last?

Lots of fish and chip shops - indeed probably most of them - are owned by Muslims these days. You only need look at how many of them advertise halal meals for starters.

People are too bothered about tax cuts in Britain - indeed, for most Brits, tax cuts are more important than avoiding a bloodbath.
Perhaps a Muslim member of Parliament can push for a full investigation into fish and chip shops and their role in motivating extremist terrorists.
Excerpts from his text message: "That's it Nicky, just put the package under the table..so we can punish all those mean Infidels who are always making fun of you for being different...your 72 virgins are waiting...hurry, before the Zionists come and get you..."
special_guest,
It's something in the fish, mercury perhaps.
That's right, special_guest. Do you know what the fish and chips shop owner's wife said? "Not tonight, dear, I have a haddock."
Islam loves followers that are easily led, those followers who dare to question things die quicker.
Can they trace the text message? I guess whomever sent it has tossed the phone and got a new one by now though ;o( The guys that send out these bombers are quite savvy apparently, so savvy that they never go bombing.
I watched a doc last night called "al qaeda code", catch it if you can, it's excellent.
Okay, here's a better movie title:
"Nick Reily and Temple of Boom"
I'm having a low IQ day...
Bad case of T.G.I.F.

Agreed. The mentally ill, though disabled, are not incapable of discerning right from wrong. If they are that devoid of reasoning then they shouldn't be on the street in the first place.
The lowest point has to be the parents (or someone else) who were willing to put explosives in their infants' milk bottles. Not that it would have been consumed but that the parent was prepared to use the child to accomplish the deaths of many people. Who is more defenseless than an infant? Parents who would do this don't deserve the name. They are childbearers but not parents. They betray a sacred trust when they teach their children to kill or use them to achieve the same end.
“He has a very low IQ and has received treatment on more than one occasion for mental illness." - JW
I thought all Jihadies have low IQ. If you have an ounce of IQ, you aint gonne stand in that line in a rush.
I thought Muslimes recruit nut jobs in Mosques or where have you. No place is safe. I am pretty much convinced Imam is in it up to his eyeballs. These slime-balls gonne wriggle out of it again and again and again ....
I am pretty much not sure of the statements made by the UK police they were on to these guys are correct. That is a load of HS. The guy would have blown-up a hell of lot of kids before the UK police have noticed anything. I think something seriously needs adjusting in the UK.
In connection with the fact that this particular person 'has a very low IQ', let's just revisit a very telling paragraph from Tawfik Hamid's article about 'the making of a jihadist's mind', which featured here some time ago, but which bears repeating for the benefit of those who may be visiting here for the first time:
"During my first year of medical school {in Egypt}, a Jamaah {Jamaah Islamiya} member named Muchtar Muchtar invited me to join the organization.
'Muchtar was in his fourth year, and Jamaah had given him the title amir (prince or caliph) - a designation taken from early Islamic writings that is associated with the Islamic caliphate or amir almomenin (prince of the believers).
'I accepted his invitation, and we walked together to Jamaah's mosque for noon prayers.
'On the way there Muchtar emphasized the central importance in Islam of the concept of al-fikr kufr, the idea that the very act of thinking (fikr) makes one become an infidel (kufr).
'(In Arabic both words are derived from the same three root letters but have different meanings.) '
'He told me, "Your brain is just like a donkey [a symbol of inferiority in the Arab culture] that can get you only to the palace door of the king [Allah]. To enter the palace once you have reached the door, you should leave the donkey [your inferior mind] outside."
'By this parable, Muchtar meant that a truly dedicated Muslim no longer thinks but automatically obeys the teachings of Islam."
So wrote Tawfik Hamid, in an article first written on April 6 2007 for Current Trends (www.CurrentTrends.org), published by Hudson Institute's Center on Islam, Democracy and the Future of the Muslim World; reprinted in Jerusalem Post, 17.1.2008, and
posted on 'jihadwatch' by Robert at January 21, 2008 8:14 AM
NOTA BENE. Al-fikr kufr - 'the very act of thinking FIKR makes one become an infidel KUFR.'
If Islam so strongly opposes thinking - questioning - among its members then it seems likely that, in the present context where it cannot 'recruit' by force, it would be inclined to seek out those least likely to ask questions.
Furthermore, when reading through the comments on Mr Spencer's Blogging the Qur'an, on 27.1.3008, in the discussion of Surah 13, 'The Thunder', I came across this remark from a reader -
"I’m always struck with how anti-thought the Koran and Islam is. It seems like the major goal of the religion, besides killing/enslaving everybody ELSE, is to not let its own followers think.” - 'Mojave Mark' on January 27, 2008 at 12:35 PM
In a weird way, Islam's penchant for beheading parallels on the physical level what it does on the spiritual/ intellectual level. Those who cut off the heads of others have already, in a sense, beheaded themselves; they have cut off their own heads, their own ability to think and question, and left them on allah's doorstep.
Mr Fitzgerald has regularly observed that the bulk of Islam's voluntary recruits (or, for that matter, those it deliberately targets) in 'the west' comprise 1. the psychically marginal and 2. the resentful, the criminal minds, drawn to a creed that sanctifies their destructive impulses.
Perhaps in the light of 'al fikr kufr' and Emir Muchtar's terrifying 'parable' about the need to leave your mind, your brains, behind when entering allah's palace, one might represent those two groups, identified by Mr Fitzgerald, as comprising 1. the 'headless' and 2. 'the beheaders'.
I can pity Mr Reilly/ Mohammed Rasheed. But I have no pity whatever for those other Muslims, his 'handlers'. He was a 'headless' one; *they* are the Beheaders.
From the article:
"Special Branch officers were monitoring a group of alleged radicals in Plymouth, where Reilly lives with his mother, WHICH WAS BASED AT A LOCAL MOSQUE but Reilly was on the fringes of the group.
"The source said: "As part of our operations to monitor the activities of radical groups across the country we were aware of this group and of Reilly himself but he was right on the fringes of a group that did not appear to be planning any attacks...."
I WANT TO KNOW - WHICH MOSQUE?? What's its name? How many members does it have? Where does it get its money from? Who's the imam/ sheikh?
How many mosques ARE there in Plymouth?
Shut the place down already, but not before going through it, and everything and everyone connected with it (especially the imam - and the louder his denials, the more closely he should be scrutinised) like a bucket of salts.
Dumbledoresarmy - Always enjoy reading your well reasoned comments. . .as to your question, FWIW, there is this from the BNP:
The Plymouth Mosque, The Plymouth Labour Party HQ & Nicky Reilly!
Not to go off topic but this just came up. My husband knows someone here & evedently a few got their butts kicked then created a blog to retaliate, but the Belgium Soccor team was ready ....

Like heroyalwhyness, I always enjoy reading dumbledoresarmy's comments. But the only "pity" is that this attempted mass murderer didn't end up literally "headless".
Even after having the first bomb go off in his face, his only thought was to move the second and third bombs outside where he could more easily kill and maim more passersby.
I hope the court-appointed psychiatrist doesn't also come up with a psychological "explanation" that convinces the judge and jury to have "pity" on this poor misunderstood Muslim.
Our magnanimity and generosity may be the death of us yet.
http://galliawatch.blogspot.com/2008/05/christians-on-trial.html
The criminal court of Tiaret was the scene of a surreal trial on Tuesday. Habiba Kouider, a Christian woman, 37 years old, a teacher in a day-care center, was before the judge for having religious books in her possession, a crime that has been punishable by a prison term since the adoption, in February 2006, of the law governing "non-Muslim religions". On March 29, 2008, in a bus bringing her back from Oran where she attends Bible school, to her residence in Tiaret, she was arrested by the gendarmes. In her handbag they found the evidence: Bibles and Gospels. She was arrested and taken to the police station, where several officers took turns subjecting the "miscreant" to a humiliating interrogation. The next day the prosecutor proposed a curious trade: "If you return to Islam, I will throw the case out; if you persist in your sin, you will suffer the wrath of justice!"

"Brainwashed"
I'm beginning to think that soulwashed is a better term.
England’s people will never be safe as long as there is a large Muslim population there. The fact that most Muslims there are not radical is beside the point. As long as the majority does not vigorously condemn Islamic terrorism and work against it (and they don't) they merely provide cover for the radicals. It is only a matter of time before some Muslim will succeed in slaughtering innocent people in England. Maybe then the British will elect a conservative/right wing government that will take the kind of “radical” action that the radical situation needs.
The choice is to love life or to love political correctness. The Muslim radicals have already told us they love death.
This is particularly insightful, that there is a parallel between true believer actions and spiritual degradation, where in both cases the head is cut off. What better subjects to induce the shahada than someone already marginal in the head, so the spiritual head can be removed so much easier. "Don't ask" is the sinister outcome of Islam's anti-thought modus operandi, and "don't tell" is the imam's imperative. All you will be told is what you are supposed to know, military fashion, and then sent off on a mission of destroying the culture where reason and brains are highly prized as the gate to freedom. "Freedom go to hell!" is the Islamic response. To defend our freedoms we must have the power to think, and to question beliefs, and to have a freedom of thought and belief. All this is forbidden in Islam, under penalty of heresy or apostasy. Who in his right mind would join such a cult? Obviously some do, whether or not in the right mind.
A lower IQ helps, but is not the prime motif. A desire for power over others, especially their minds and free will, is paramount to be a true believer in the cult of Islam. In simple Reily's case this whole enterprise backfired on his head's blowback, poor chap didn't have a chance. Islam sucks souls out of your body, but especially your brain. That is Mohammad's legacy of 'submission' to Allah, the pagan Mesopotamian moon god, that demands blood sacrifice and soul.
I wonder just who a mummy would offend?

If he was a teacher he probably wasn't that dumb either, at least not as dumb as they press would have us believe...
Islamic manchurian candidate.
"The source said: "As part of our operations to monitor the activities of radical groups across the country we were aware of this group and of Reilly himself but he was right on the fringes of a group that did not appear to be planning any attacks...."
ok, so they are monitoring the activies of Islamic radical groups and they just happen to be aware of the bomber who appears with the one radical group of Muslims that did not appear to be planning any attacks...riiiiiight.
Update
BBC TV news at 9.00am this morning said he had been influnced by "extremist groups" no mention of the "I" word let alone the "M" word.
I guess its those animal rights activists again.

RESPONSE: No doubt about it. There seems to be three categories...
1) Women who convert to Islam out of love for a Muslim man
2) Convicts who convert to Islam for protection in prison
3) The odd-ball whose disaffection from the real world manifests itself in a flight to what he considers exoticism, contrarianism or both, e.g., John Walker Lind, Adam Gadahn (sic?), Cat Stevens.
dumbledoresarmy,
Great post. I'm so glad I don't work in the increasingly hazardous cartoon industry, because your post gave me a mental image of a mosque foyer, with a shoe rack on one side, and a brain rack on the other!
Maybe the real reason for leaving the brain at the door is to avoid coup-contra-coup injuries sustained during prayer.
