A partial answer. "Bush to Press Congress on Offshore Oil Drilling," from FoxNews, June 17 (thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist):
WASHINGTON — President Bush plans to make a renewed push Wednesday to get Congress to end a long-standing ban on offshore oil and gas drilling, echoing a call by GOP presidential candidate John McCain.Congressional Democrats have opposed lifting the prohibitions on energy development on nearly all federal Outer Continental Shelf waters for more than a quarter-century, including waters along both the East and West coasts.
With oil prices soaring and motorists paying $4 a gallon for gasoline, political pressures have been growing for more domestic oil and gas production.
"The president believes Congress shouldn't waste any more time," White House press secretary Dana Perino told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
"He will explicitly call on Congress to ... pass legislation lifting the congressional ban on safe, environmentally friendly offshore oil drilling," Perino said. "He wants to work with states to determine where offshore drilling should occur."
Bush also will reiterate his call for development of oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, Perino said. McCain has opposed drilling in the refuge, maintaining that the pristine areas in northeastern Alaska should be protected from energy development....
And what if someone in China offers $150 a barrel. Does the oil go to someone in the US that only pays $130 for it? You have to nationalize the oil companies? Then they become entities of the government. The next thing will be that congress would get involved and it would be cheaper to pay the outragous prices to the Arabs.
I have thought that the saying that, "We can't drill our way out of this," had a lot more truth to it. Rant off.

Sorry about double post. Failure in modem transmit.
It's about damn time!
It's about damn time!
Offshore drilling is a start. Bug that poop oil (http://reportonarrakis.blogspot.com/2008/06/bugs-that-poop-out-oil.html) will be added relief.
We need to get off oil as quick as possible! Some say its not possible, however we did send someone to the moon. Sure, drill for oil, but in the long term we must destroy the economies of our enemies by finding an alternative to oil.
The Sheiks in Saudi must get nightmares when they hear about coal-fuel, ultracapacitors, and space directed solar collectors.
How the hell did we end up with John McCain as the Republican candidate?! As a Republican, I must support him but I can't figure out how the hell this rebel rationalizes his freakin' positions.
Where have we gone wrong??!!
The relief would be fast, temporary, and entirely an illusion. Look at the Detroit auto industry. They were at these crossroads three decades ago, and now everyone buys Asian because it's fuel-efficient. If enough people get the idea that this is a remotely reasonable policy, America will be a second-tier power in forty years.
Cut into the "oil ticks" business anyway we can.

Well Rick, the answer to your question lies in the second sentence of your post. As a Republican, you MUST STOP supporting this kind of candidate! I was active through my states caucus and assemblies. I am turning my back on the repubs until they choose to nominate a candidate that I find acceptable. Stop accepting this situation. They are leading you around by the nose! If Barry wins the White House, so be it. I will not support the "lesser of two evils" anymore. And neither should you. That will make them change.
The Quran, states "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." (Surah 9.029)
"Jizya" is a form of tax only imposed upon non-Muslims.
What this means is that the Islamic nations are looking at high oil prices as a God-mandated, just tax upon infidel nations. The king of Saudi Arabia must have felt righteously great the day President Bush came begging for oil.
Shomo,
Partially correct, but I would agree to a large part of your post.
True, but one single word escapes their vocabulary:
Diesel
Consult the Europeans for more information.
The oil will go to the highest bidder because it is a global market, but if we have enough output, it could put a dent in the world price.
Another thing to think about is the possibility of states, or the federal government depending upon where the drilling takes place, demanding a percentage of the output as royalty payments, similar to the cash payments Alaska receives from pipeline oil.
Time to put the neo-communist environmentalist wackos in their place, as this is a national emergency. Time to remember what policies got us here, and which political party has those policies as a platform. They have stacked the courts with like-minded judges which have furthered their socialist agenda, enforcing from the bench what they cannot acheive at the ballot box.
I am too afraid to allow NObama to win, so my presidential vote will be one AGAINST secret muslim man. I have already let the Republican party know how disappointed I am by withholding any financial support. I will give my money to 527 organizations which run ads against NObama.
God help the USA!
So Bush couldn't do this years ago when he had a Republican majority? What an idiot.
If we Cdns can drill in our pristine wilderness and shores, and underneath our Great Lakes, so can the US! this does not mean an alternative should not be found. get some common sense, and get rid of the looney greenies as they all hang out in the same cult of control freakoids of the left.
