Why we don't see more rallies for religious tolerance in the Islamic world.
It's good to see that "moderate Indonesians" were outraged by this attack, but why did the police let it happen?
"Extremists arrested for rally attack," from AFP, June 5 (thanks to JE):
JAKARTA: Indonesian police raided the headquarters of a radical Islamist group, detaining 59 alleged extremists over a violent attack on a peaceful rally for religious tolerance.Police said the pre-dawn operation involving more than 1000 officers yesterday was in response to Sunday's attack at the Monas national monument in Jakarta by stick-wielding fanatics from the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI).
"Fifty nine people, including the head of FPI, Rizieq Shihab, were taken to Jakarta police headquarters for questioning in relation to the incident," Jakarta's police chief said.
The Indonesian Government came under strong pressure to act against the radicals after police failed to stop them beating scores of people with bamboo sticks at the rally.
Hundreds of radicals took part in the unprovoked attack. But with outrage growing among moderate Indonesians, the police issued an ultimatum to the radicals on Monday to hand over 10 suspects by midnight or face action....
A day after the attack, Shihab said his supporters were preparing for war against the minority Ahmadiyah Islamic sect, which Indonesia is considering banning for its "deviant" beliefs.
And once the backlash from the arrests gathers steam, the accused will all be released.
Robert,
You forgot the State memo. They're "hirabists," not "jihadists." Why? Because State says so.
"Fifty nine people, including the head of FPI, Rizieq Shihab, were taken to Jakarta police headquarters for questioning in relation to the incident," Jakarta's police chief said.
Fifty-nine people were not charged with anything. They were held for questioning.
the police issued an ultimatum to the radicals on Monday to hand over 10 suspects by midnight or face action....
At most, ten suspects. Even there, they won't necessarily be charged.
This looks like nothing but a show for the benefit of the West.
They will all probably be released. Too many military generals, police and politicians are involved with the FPI. I marched today in the city I live in against the FPI, calling for the disbanding of the FPI, Laskar Islam and other terrorist organizations here in Indonesia. Habib Rizieq Shihab should be arrested for inciting violence and terrorism in Indonesia but that won't happen unless continue to press on with their agenda and continue to insult former president and NU leader Gus Dur. Ansor, NU's paramilitary wing far outnumbers FPI and is better equipped. If FPI goes through with their threat to eliminate Ahmadiyah by this weekend ther could be a bloodbath here and it will be FPI getting the smackdown. The cowardly FPI beat on elderly, women and children during the attack on Sunday. You can see the video of the attacks from local SCTV news HERE. The video has no English subtitles.
People are fed up with groups like the FPI running wild here and I think you will see the heretical and kafirized Muslims eradicating groups like this. Political Islamic groups will probably also turn on the FPI for if they show support for FPI, it may hurt votes in next year's elections.
"Muslims attack Christians with machetes and sticks in Indonesia"
http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/new.php?n=12827
From the above article:
"Muslim extremists who are members of the Islamic Defenders Front recently attacked 200 moderate Christians and Muslims "
I love the reference to "moderate Christians."
Exactly which "Extremist Christians" are they contrasting this group to?????
They can't just say "recently attacked 200 Christians and moderate Muslims..." as that would rub in the fact there are only MUSLIM extremists.
Excellent example of moral equivalence!
I continue to point out crap like this to my friends that insist Islam is not a problem, and they continue to argue that Islam is a religion of peace and these types of incidents are rare...isolated. No matter how many "incidents" there are, no matter how often they occur, they just can't see past the BS that the media pumps out.
It appears to me that this battle is going to be played out in the streets. No one sees the coming storm. Just a few, and our voices don't carry well in the present climate.
I feel like the bell ringer in The Stand...
Calling out a warning, and being viewed as insane.
Islam is a lie, truth and in some cases, superior firepower, will kill it.

..............................
In moderate Indonesia, a sizable number of Islamists considered an unprovoked attack on peaceful people at a rally for religious telerance to be a legitimate form of "defending Islam".
Keep this in mind the next time some Imam claims that Jihad is only for the "defense of Islam".
Jihadists consider the Ahmediya sect as a grave threat, far out of proportion to their actual numbers. They are mainly confined Pakistani and Indian Punjab. Pakistan declared them to be non-Muslims (meaning kafirs) long back. For good reason too. The Ahmediyas believe in a second prophet (the sect's founder) whose teachings are somewhat different from the original psychopath. Once you start accepting teachings deviating from the original book, that's the beginning of rationalism and reform, and the end of you-know-what. So the attacks will continue.
Another plank in the "Islamorealist" platform must be the establishment of MEGA-MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT CENTERS to combat the mega-mosques that are creating mental illness.
If every time a "radical" (read ANY) mosque is set up, non-Muslims counter with establishing a mental-health clinic next door that specifically treats RELIGIOUS DELUSION, perhaps we will get somewhere!
