Iran shells Iraqi border villages

Act of war? "Sadrists protest US-Iraqi deal; Iran shells border villages - Summary," from DPA, June 6 :

[...] Elsewhere, two border villages in Sulaymanyah province, 365 kilometers north of Baghdad, came under heavy Iranian artillery shelling on Friday morning, a spokesman for the Iraqi Kurdistan region's guard forces said.

"No information is yet available on possible casualties resulting from the shelling," the source was quoted as telling VOI.

Meanwhile, a local resident told VOI by phone that the two villages had earlier been evacuated due to the incessant Iranian fire. Only shepherds remained in the area, the source said.

Is it yet verified that the bombardment was by Iranian Army artillery? If so, that's an outright act of war against a country with 125,000 American troops in it.

Will we react as we should, or will we "lodge a protest?"

We might give them a stern talking-to. But, nothing more, wouldn't want to offend Barbarians, you know.

Interesting that the Irans are attacking Kurdistan. Maybe the mullahs are worried that Iranian Kurds will join up with Iragi Kurds?

Send Obama to have a fireside chat with Beasty Boy Ahmadinijad.

Iran is just trying to stir up some___. Anther try at provoking a confrontation.
I wonder what his buddy, and compatriot in Allah's causes, Maliki thinks of this attack?...Maybe this is something they cooked up...

State will just have to get angry and use harsh language, that'l teach 'em !

Sounds like they believe George Galloway, he says we can't respond militarily, and he is agitating for war.

Bad news, indeed. George Galloway-a squirming toad, indeed.

TANSTAAFL: "Interesting that the Iranians are attacking Kurdistan. Maybe the mullahs are worried that Iranian Kurds will join up with Iragi Kurds?"

This is precisely what is going on.

Kurdish separatists in Iran are continuing their struggle for self-determination. Though the Iraqi-Kurdish government is offering them no overt assistance, it is impossible to prevent them from occasionally retreating into Iraq for sanctuary.

Iran's response is heavy-handed, but not nearly as heavy-handed as the Turks in similar circumstances. The Iranians know their shelling is doing nothing to quell the insurgency, but their goal seems to be to disrupt life for the Iraqi Kurds in order to pressure Iraq into cracking down on Iranian Kurds who cross the border.

It is amazing to me that the US is not actively supporting Iran's Kurds in their fight for freedom. Doing so would be a tit-for-tat response to Iran's support for Iraqi insurgents, would give us additional bargaining power to induce Iran to end its meddling in Iraq...and ultimately, would be one more source of pressure on the Iranian regime to facilitate the improbable "regime-change" that all the pundits keep advocating as an alternative to a strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Iran and Turkey have attacked "PKK positions" before. I'll bet that's what they say. PKK is the violent once-Marxist separatist group which has bombed thousands of Turks. Probably because the Turks wrote some nasty cartoons or something.

The US won't do anything about it. Wouldn't be prudent because "Mission Accomplished".

I don't know but it would be nice to get this out to a wider audience. Anyone got any ideas how this could make the News.

Obama to visit Iran. Understands the Kurd problem.

McCain to visit Iraq Kurd's. Understands the problem.

Bush may consider counter artillery strikes in Iran.

Some Americans in the area were kidnapped by the Iranians after they crossed the border chasing Iranian Kurds.

Just thinking outside the box. The other side does it all of the time.
