Israeli military exercise preparing for strike on Iran?

Summer 1939 Alert: "U.S. says exercise by Israel seemed directed at Iran" by Michael R. Gordon and Eric Schmitt in the New York Times, June 20 (thanks to James):

WASHINGTON: Israel carried out a major military exercise earlier this month that American officials say appeared to be a rehearsal for a potential bombing attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Several American officials said the Israeli exercise appeared to be an effort to develop the military's capacity to carry out long-range strikes and to demonstrate the seriousness with which Israel views Iran's nuclear program.

More than 100 Israeli F-16 and F-15 fighters participated in the maneuvers, which were carried out over the eastern Mediterranean and over Greece during the first week of June, American officials said.

The exercise also included Israeli helicopters that could be used to rescue downed pilots. The helicopters and refueling tankers flew more than 900 miles, which is about the same distance between Israel and Iran's uranium enrichment plant at Natanz, American officials said.

Israeli officials declined to discuss the details of the exercise. A spokesman for the Israeli military would say only that the country's air force "regularly trains for various missions in order to confront and meet the challenges posed by the threats facing Israel."...

the date l think is best after the US elections, as it should have the least impact on McCain. Iran will not back down, its their test of manhood to belong tothe nuke club, and so a good bombing is neaded. knowing the Israeli and if US perpares for it, will be expert at hitting their targets with least amount of civilian casualties, not that any islamists would ever think along the same humane ways.

I am just wondering why "American officials" commented.

Long live the People and State of Israel! Up with Zion!

I think the Israelis should take out the threat on a date that suits the Israelis, not play American politics where it can give Iran more time to arm with advanced Russian anti aircraft missles.

Can you say Hesham Islam?
I think that this guy was left in place so that the conduit of treason would stay in place.
You know, they way the cops let the little dealer stay on the streets son they can catch the big guys.
Better the enemy that you know...

Is this wishful thinking ?

Just psych-ops ?

Not much chance with that misdirected fool Olmert at the head.

I am just wondering why "American officials" commented.

I read somewhere (I think on Debka) that they commented to pre-empt Israel from striking (though I don't know if that is effective reasoning) because Robert Gates is against attacking Iran and against Israel's attacking Iran. Then my next question is why did Bush choose Robert Gates, whose views were known, I believe.

Amir Taheri in the NY Post made an insightful observation. He said that once tangible moves were afoot to mount an attack on Iran the Iranians would suddenly agree to a temporary suspension of uranium enrichment, as they did in the past. He observes that once they do this it will become politically impossible to attack. That is probably very true, although it shows how pathetically weak in mind, heart, and will the West has become, that it can be played by a thuggish, terrorist regime whose intentions are transparent to anyone without blinders. And wouldn't you know, I read in a financial publication today that Iran has agreed to a temporary halt, though I cannot find this reported anywhere else as yet.

Now watch for a big military exercise from Iran who likes to play tit for tat. Maybe someday soon they can have a joint exercise...Allah willing...and he always is...

I think the Israelis should take out the threat on a date that suits the Israelis, not play American politics where it can give Iran more time to arm with advanced Russian anti aircraft missles.

l dont think Israelis can pull it off by themselves, but then who knows the timing, the little monkey man from iran is just itching for an all fight against israel and will probably egg on war to bring is hidden imman from down the well.. prol from hell.
so why let you enemies pick your date, Israelis should do what is best for them.

An Israeli strike will certainly accelerate historical processes currently unfolding. There's no way to safely predict the outcome, both short and long-term. But doing nothing, which seems to be the Western method, is easily predictable: Iran will have a nuclear bomb and there is a great likelihood

1) the Iranians will eventually develop an ICBM delivery capability...(some day in the not-to-distant future, they could have literally hundreds of nuclear-tipped ICBMs and SLBMs that could rival our own arsenal)

2) the Iranians will empower their non-state clients like Hezbollah, Hamas, and Al Qaeda (yes folks, Iran has used Al Qaeda as a client for years, going back to the Khobar Tower bombings in Riyadh) with nuclear weapons in order to strike at certain enemies (Israel and perhaps even America with a "suitcase" bomb)) while trying to maintain a plausible deniability.

This is what we face by doing nothing.

I think the Israelis should take out the threat on a date that suits the Israelis, not play American politics where it can give Iran more time to arm with advanced Russian anti aircraft missles.

One does not need to be an Army War College graduate to understand that any attack on Iran must be comprehensive far beyond destruction of any nuclear facilities that Iran has. To leave Iran with an ability to respond militarilly, even so much as a little bit will be worse than not doing anything about Iran. Do it correctly or do nothing, either way it will have unintended consequences. Fill up before it gets down to half.

You certainly are paying attention--I was wondering the same thing myself, unless they are trying to discourage attacks--which given some of the attitudes in the administration is not impossible.

At this point, though, if Israel does not act I don't see any country--or any international body: Nato, the UN, IAEA--taking any serious steps to prevent the horror of a nuclear armed Iran.

Of course, one thinks of Israel taking out Osirak nuclear reactor in 1981. While Osirak was fortified at its base, it was vunerable to air attacks. Also, it now seems that Iraq's *entire* weapons program was concentrated in that one facility. When Israel took Osirak "off line", they destroyed all of Iraq's nuclear capabilities.

From what I have heard, though, Iran has learned lessons from their erstwhile enemies--facilities are at least somewhat fortified against bombings, many sites are underground, and, most daunting of all, the program is scattered among many reactors and weapons labs.

Still, Israel's actions in 1981 was what prevented the murderous Saddam Hussein from developing nuclear weapons. Even with its current weak leadership, Israel seems the best hope for stopping the Iranian nuclear juggernaut. The West--the US especially--should be doing all they can to support Israel's actions.

Date? Here's a date: bomb early and bomb often. It's the ONLY thing those people understand.

I am convinced that there is a lot more going on here in regards to Israel doing the job, they are getting support from numerous countries including Turkey and Greece, there are secret positionings of necessary military equipment in place in Iraq, and Aghanistan against this maniac mullah regime.

If we can shut down the ever increasing threat of the major supporter and exporter of terrorism it could go a long way in weakening the hand Hezbollah, Hamas and various other terrorist groups as well and including Al Qaeda.

I also noticed that Israel was conducting some of this exercise in Greek airspace...Some kind of agreement was necessary for that...

I'm thinking that in addition to the nuke facilities, that they may also hit the imam hideout in Qom. Cut off the head of the snake.

I heard on NPR this morning that Imanutjob is facing a tough re-election campaign. So I'm thinking that a lot of his rhetoric is to unify the country against the common enemy (the great and lesser satans). But I could be wrong.

What caught my eye most in this article is what a couple of posters have already mentioned and that is Israeli use of Greek airspace. That surprised me because Greece has been a long-time sympathizer of the Palestinian Arabs. Anybody else intrigued by this? Does anybody have more info here?

Wellington, I don't have any extra information regarding Greek/Israeli relations although I actually had read and perceived the opposite, in that Greece was more on Israelis side of things, being as it shares a very similar problem. Greece's Cypreus problem with Turkey. I don't know how accurate that is now though, it's been awhile, but the impression I was under was that Greece was more of a supporter of Israel than most nations because of the same sort of issue facing it. Serbia was another that had support for Israel. There aren't alot. If I'm way off my apologies in advance, it's just I thought I read some things a couple years ago giving me that impression.

It is quiet simple really, the threat from Iran is for Israel an existential threat and therefore they will be forced to act at some time in the future. The point is that they cannot act because they have to fly over Iraq, and it doesn't matter if what the Israelis intent to do will benefit us all, if a commander in the American Air Force sees a hostile air plane entering his territory he is going to shoot it down, not doing so would be dereliction of duty. If Israel is too attack Iran it will have to be with American say so. They will have to have codes for friend or foe recognition, that the American radar recognize and they can only come from America, this would prove American connivance, and that wouldn't go down too well with Americas Arab allies now would it. Appearance is everything. America by announcing this have pointed out that Israel has the ability to attack Iran, by being allowed to fly over Greek airspace then they most likely would get the right to fly over Iraqi airspace. This is a well orchestrated message being sent to the Iranian, to start to get real and using Israel as a proxy they don't get any approbation poured over there heads from the rest of the world.
If I was a betting man I would put money on that Israel will attack Iran shortly before they gain a bomb, Israel has a better excuse, they can at least plead justified self defense against an existential threat. If America did it, it would be unprovoked aggression. If I was an American living in Norfolk Virginia I would take note of when one of your Battle fleets sail for the Arabian/Persian Gulf and if it was there to relieve one of the two out there, if they all stayed on station then I would start buying in supplies.
When Israel attacks Iran, and from this message I think it is 100% certain if Iran does not change its ways, then all hell is going to break lose. Iran will lash out and as they wont be able to do it too Israel they will most likely or almost certainly try something in the Gulf region. America will then have an excuse to militarily neuter them and finish off what Israel missed. You can bet your life that America wont miss the chance. The Arabs well, they might make a few nasty remarks but most of the Gulf States are realists and will be only too pleased that their Oil installations are in one piece, so that they can keep selling their overpriced oil to the stupid Kuffa.

In 1973, the Israeli state was in grave danger due to the threat of advancing armies. Sharon fought the Egyptians to a stalemate, preventing the Negev from being overrun. In the north, Israeli brigades suffered 70%+ casualty rates in order to hold the Golan after Syria's surprise attack. Soviet paratroopers almost finished the job by parachuting into the Negev, but they turned back in midair after America put its forces on nuclear alert.

Today, Israel is not threatened by conquering armies. It is threatened most by a barrage of missiles from Gaza and the "Shiite Crescent"--exactly the type of attack that an attack on Iran would catalyze. It appears the IDF is contemplating suicide.

.......................

Much of the "Arab world" complained vociferously about Israeli actions after bombing the Osirak nuclear facility. In private, though, many in the region admitted that they were glad of Israel's actions, as they had no desire to see a nuclear-armed Iraq.

Of course, they could not praise the hated Israelis, no matter how much they agreed with them. Wouldn't look good for Arab unity, you know . . .

Sneakyzionisstcrusader: Thanks for your response. I'm just working from memory here but I remember such things as Greece's main airport years ago being one of the most lax in Europe, thus more usable for Muslim terrorist purposes-------and Greece didn't seem to give a damn. Also, if I remember correctly, Arafat was lauded in the Greek press and all that. But you could be right. Your mention of Serbia made me think that Greece could have changed its position from years ago in light of what happened in the Balkans in the Nineties. The Greeks, after all, are Orthodox like the Serbs and would have reason to be hostile to any Muslim advantages in the Balkans. Come to think of it, I'm not aware of Greece's position on recently independent Kosovo. I know Russia hasn't recognized it and, of course, Serbia hasn't, but I believe Greece did, though I don't know for certain.

Anyway, thanks again for your reply. I will continue to be curious about all this. I wonder what Hugh knows here. He always has exhibited a wealth of knowledge on virtually anything related to Islam and the world at large. Perhaps he'll chime in with an assessment concerning this.

"I am just wondering why "American officials" commented."

Because our government has the arrogance to act like Israel is America's 51st state. Just like it does with Japan and South Korea, which our government treats like our 52nd and 53rd states.

We are ALLIES, not lords and masters. I'm fed up with Condi Rice and all the rest telling Israel and the rest of our allies what they SHOULD and WILL do. It's disgusting.

Go Israel go! We Hindus are with you all the way (except the pseudo-secular, Muslim worshipping ones).

personally I don't think this is just psy-ops. Iran is far too close to crossing the red-line of no-return. I fully expect a direct Israel-Iran engagement before January 2009. Unsure how this will affect a McCain candidacy, or twinkle-toes Obama. Can you imagine a WWIII with Obama at the helm? God please no!

Israel will act, and act soon I would think.

Madame Vengier: You're certainly entitled to your opinion that America treats Israel, South Korea and Japan in a subservient fashion, but I would respectfully disagree with your contention. I see America first and foremost as Israel's greatest friend in the entire world (and, yes, I know about major past differences such as occurred during the Eisenhower years and I too am not crazy about Condi Rice). Sometimes we disagree with Israel and it with us, sometimes there's arm twisitng, but so what? Welcome to the real world. And don't forget that many Israeli politicians, even a hard liner like Ariel Sharon, have engaged in unwise bargaining and concessions with their mortal enemies. Also, America has interests and concerns in the Middle East other than just Israel. Great powers have heaps of issues lesser powers don't even have to think about it, let alone act upon.

As for Japan and South Korea, I would argue that both countries are the free and propserous societies that they are first and foremost because America is the most generous great power in history. MacArthur's administration of Japan has no equal in enlightened and compassionate rule over a completely defeated power. Japan to this day enjoys the protection afforded it by the US military. The Japanese as a whole know only too well that if they had to be defeated only once in their entire history, it is to their great fortune long term that it was America.

Respecting South Korea, we have told them we'll withdraw from the Korean peninsula if they wish. After making ungrateful noises from time to time toward America, the South Koreans always come back to wanting America to protect them. Always. Most important, not a single South Korean today would be free but for America and the American soldier. You know this or should know it.

My above assessment is not meant to exculpate America completely. Sometimes my country does wrong and a nation like Israel or Japan has the superior position on a particular issue, but in the final analysis I don't see how any fair minded person can think America's interaction with Israel, South Korea, Japan, or for that matter dozens of other countries, is evidentiary of an essentially arrogant and bullying power. As Mark Steyn has observed, a world without America is a world that would be subject to the tyrants of the earth.

Lot's of bravdo; lot's of posturing; lot's of bar room bantering. Period.

Consider the raid on Entebe:

1976: Israelis rescue Entebbe hostages
Israeli commandos have rescued 100 hostages, mostly Israelis or Jews, held by pro-Palestinian hijackers at Entebbe airport in Uganda.

At about 0100 local time (2200GMT), Ugandan soldiers and the hijackers were taken completely by surprise when three Hercules transport planes landed after a 2,500-mile trip from Israel.

Israel Accused Of Attacking Nuclear Site
Dominic Waghorn
Middle East Correspondent
Updated:05:31, Wednesday September 19, 2007

Israel is bracing itself for reprisals after reportedly attacking a nuclear facility hidden in the Syrian desert.

Israel jets 'hit Syria'It is thought it may have been acting on intelligence that North Korea was shipping nuclear weapons facilities to help Syria build a bomb.

North Korea has denied the allegations.

The details of the raid are a closely guarded secret. Israel has enforced strict censorship rules on its media, and has banned even senior officials from discussing the raid.

http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30200-1284716,00.html

Not much warning there either.

What you have here with this news is pure BULLSHIRT for public consumption.

If such a raid was REALLY in the offing, there is no way in heaven's name, on earth, or in hell would anyone in ANY military alert the oppositions air defenses.

If either Isreal or the US were going to do anything of the kind, iran would have numerous smoldering radioactive holes dotting the landscape.

Fact is, niether of these two countries are gonna do shhhhhirt at this point and are only trying to console the masses for the reality that iran already has nuclear bombs and is targeting Western cities even as we speak.

The only consideration you, as a western leader have to worry about is; managing public perception for the moment, and what the hell you are going to do the morning after.

Lot's of goddamned luck with the last consideration.

Could I please explain something too you this is not for public consumption, it is for Iranian consumption. I don't know if you know the definition of a diplomat, A diplomat is someone who is hired to lie for his country. These SEVERAL AMERICAN OFFICIALS whoever they are, are not diplomats, they were there to pass on a simple coded message to the Iranians that if they continue on the course they are now on there is a very high chance, somewhere in the region of 100% that they will get their bottoms severely smacked, not only that, it will make them cry, do I make my self clear.

My personal preference is that they get it done as soon as possible. I find the thought that a set of Psychotic religious fanatics, who believe, in a juvenile popping out of a well like a jack-in-the-box to lead them somewhat disturbing, especially if they have an Atom Bomb. I have a couple of grandchildren, and if they have be fed radioactive milk, there will be one very pissed off Granddad.

Doesn't sound to me like we have much to disagree about other than perhaps the notion of who will strike first; I'll bet one can of beer and a couple of stogies that iran strikes first.

Here's to hoping that I'm wrong.

If Iran gets nukes, both we and Israel are toast.

Israel will get several airborne nukes launched by proxies and we get the same, except that one or two will be of the nuke EMP variety which will probably result in the death of over half our population.

I hope Israel gets the job done on Iran. Israel is our only hope at this point.

Holger Dansker,

Thanks for your insightful posts above. I think you've called it right.

Yes the BS meter is going off the page. I would guess it was a rumor floated by person(s) holding petroleum or gasoline futures positions.

It is too easy: Lets float a rumor that Israeli military maneuvers are a prelude to an attack on Iran. Boom long positions in the oil futures go up and we get rich. Might be a good idea to see if the reporter buys a new home in the next year.

advanced Russian anti aircraft missiles.

Is this the same stuff that didn't work when Israel gave Syria it's last spanking?

The seditions and treasonous NY Times --- as always, quick to side with America's enemies, well-connected with Jew-hating informers and moles in State who seek eternal vengeance for and simply refuse to put to rest the USS Liberty incident --- should be viewed as collaborators of the Mohamedan enemies of civilization. Once again, as in 1981, Israel will be forced to attempt to do the West's dirty work, because a Mohamedan WMD poses a far greater threat to its existence than it does to the U.S.

Instead of turning tens of its elite pilots into the same cannon fodder that its ground troops have been turned into since the first Lebanon war, having been deprived of air cover because of the Jewish State leaders' fear of what the U.N. will say about the inevitable Mohamedan civilian casualties --- which resulted in hundreds of Israeli soldiers killed from Hizbollah sniper fire --- should finally use its arsenal of long-range ballistic missiles, equipped with both conventional and non-conventional weapons. Iran's nuclear weapons program should be destroyed from a distance using advanced technology.

If the kafir world had even the tiniest grain of self-preservation and commonsense left, the following would happen.

The Israelis would be GIVEN, not sold, a sufficient number of F22s, ASAP. Not sure whether it would be best to do so entirely on the quiet, so as to get the mullahs with their pants down; or to let a rumour leak out...DARURA.

And the Russians would quietly let Israel and the US know that a strike on Iran's nuclear project will be publicly protested but privately applauded.

Let Russia give Israel tacit permission to hit the jihadis right where it hurts...and lots of Russian families whose young men were tortured to death by fiendish jihadis in Afghanistan, or in Chechnya, not to mention those whose family and friends were murdered by jihad assaults in Moscow and Beslan, will cheer. And the shame of the pogroms, and the 'elders of zion' forgery, and Soviet persecution of Jews, will be washed away from Russia, forever.

This particular incident/exercise was codenamed ”Operation Glorious Spartan”. It took place 3 weeks ago in total secrecy with a complete news blackout. And it involved a combination of 100 F-16 & F-15’saswell as a large fleet of aerial refueling tankers and CSAR Blackhawk helicopters to pick up pilots shot down .It involved an equal number of Greek fighters as “aggressors” .It used live bombs on a Greek bombing range in central Greece. The Israelis insisted that news should only be released 2 weeks after completion.

One poster above mentioned that it is psychological warfare against Iran. Well, if you remember the movie “300” a while ago? The Spartans (the name of the exercise) fought the Persians (today’s Iran). That should answer that.

I think the United States knew about this because Olmert was in Washington D.C. and he almost certainly informed Bush. Although for political reasons the U.S. administration may prefer to claim plausible deniability.

Lastly, I don’t think a nuclear Iran would be in the Greek national interest as it will cause nuclear proliferation worries involving it’s archrival Turkey (with it’s connection to nuclear armed Pakistan), which they would have to address. So, it’s no surprise that the Greeks took part with Israel in this.

@ Wellington

I agree with everything you have said. You just read way too much into my comment, that's all. Our government DOES go to far with its friendship with these nations and the citizens of these nations DO feel pushed around by our government. Are you prepared to discount the valid feelings of millions of Korean and Japanese citizens? I'm not. Of course everything you said about freedom and prosperity is true--and especially the part about the South Koreans' sometimes ungrateful attitude but then running back to us again. They seem to have almost a love-hate relationship with us. That's because they need us but they wish they didn't need us. Koreans are proud of their self-sustaining identity and I think they are not truly anti-American but just want to stand on their "own two feet" but realistically they cannot.

But everything you said--and my agreeing 100% with you--does not change the fact that our government is out of line at times telling our allies what to do, striking deals that appear to the citizens of those nations to be only in America's best interests. Israel is the only one of the three nations I mentioned who, in the end, have the guts to do what they want to do no matter what Washington tells them.

The fact that these nations need us doesn't make it okay for our government to push them around.

Do it correctly or do nothing, either way it will have unintended consequences. Fill up before it gets down to half.

Men ought either to be indulged or utterly destroyed, for if you merely offend them they take vengeance, but if you injure them greatly they
are unable to retaliate, so any injury done to a man ought to be such that vengeance cannot be feared.

- Niccolo Machiavelli of course.

Israel's attacking Iran's nuclear facility is great but Iran has more than one facility and their enrichment programme is widely spread to all these facilities. Taking out just one facility will not solve the problem... every facility has to be taken out simultaneously in order to totally destroy Iran's nuclear problem.
This is all well and good but........ and there's a BIG but here.....

Iran will retaliate no doubt... first by immediately ending their oil supply to Europe. Iran is the largest oil supplier to Europe and Europe depends on Iranian oil. This action will have a monumental effect on Europe.

World economy depends on Commercial Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's second course of action will likely be to just block the Strait of Hormuz by sinking a few tankers thereby, bringing commerce and the world economy to a virtual stand-still.

This will likely sink both Europe and the U.S. and produce a devastating effect on world economy.

Iran knows this well and is using this as it's trump card and that is why it is behaving arrogantly with the rest of the world.

We have to be very cautious here. Attacking Iran and destroying it's nuclear ambitions is fine but let's look a liitle ahead and see what the repercussions would be.

O Israel . . .

Do it NOW!
Let's get this thing started and over with before my children have to deal with it. WE are the generation tasked with destroying islam.

I believe Israel and the United States are hesitant because this will be such a difficult challenge that will not just require surgical strikes. Each has calculated that to deter Iran will require at a minimum the following strategy:

Iran solution:
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad dead on the first strike;
10 top hostile mullahs dead in first five minutes;
10 neutron bombs at 10 military locations ‘including most likely nuclear sites;’
Non negotiable demand for immediate public unconditional surrender;
Non negotiable demand for public renunciation of nuclear energy without limitation on verification;
Additional nuking if surrender is not unconditional in 24 hours
At slightest hint of opposition or failure to surrender, repeat above.

The solution here is probably more than the public understands or will be difficult to accept which explains the hesistancy of the leaders of the West to do something.

There is a conservative government now in Greece.
The pro-Arafat policies were an invention of the socialists.
The present government does not agree in everything with US or Israel (it does not participate in Iraq but only in Afghanistan) but it has signed agreements for military cooperation.

Madame Vengier: Good to know we're basically on the same page with one another and that any differences between us appear to be minimal. Thanks for your reply.

athenian: Thanks for clearing things up a bit about the reason for change in Greece's stance on Israel.

Israel may open the can of Worms but the US will be the ones Fishing with them for the next 60 days.

We will dismantle the infrastructure of the Country once Iran's air space is cleared.

Barook

I think the Israelis are well aware that Iran has more than one nuclear facility and have at least a contingency plan for this even if it would be difficult.
Please don't neglect to mention that Iran has an economy too(very fragile I understand) and it is also centered around oil.
Everyone in the know realizes that a military option for dealing with Iran has unintended consequences but Iran might be, in typical Islamic fashion, overplaying their hand..you think?

Israel will attack...they have no alternative..last man standing wins
