KAMPUNG PULAU MELAKA, Malaysia (Reuters) - A leader of Malaysia's Islamist party, which made surprising gains in March elections, wants its secular allies to apply strict sharia law, which include amputations and stonings for Muslims.The hardline Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS) has enacted such laws in its Kelantan stronghold to punish rapists and adulterers with stoning to death, while thieves would lose their limbs.
However, the country's Federal government has barred PAS from enforcing the laws.
PAS and other opposition parties wrested control of five of Malaysia's 13 states in the March election as voters punished the ruling coalition for concerns ranging from rising crime to racial tensions.
But analysts have said it would be tough for PAS to broaden its appeal due to its advocacy of the punishments called for by strict Muslim religious law, known as sharia or hudud, which scare off non-Muslims who see the party as a fundamentalist clique.
"Islam is a moderate, soft religion," PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat told Reuters late last week in the northeastern state of Kelantan, the party's stronghold for the past 18 years.
"We took small steps to introduce Islam as a way of life in Kelantan. We would like to do the same in the other states that have fallen to the opposition."
Moderate and soft at least until the stones come crashing down on your skull.
It seems that all muslims have to do is add islam is a religion of peace after saying crazy things wipes out the bad things like women who walk around without an escort should be severly beaten and islam is a religion of peace and all anyones supposed to here is its a religion of peace part thats exactly what the western goverments are doing.

It really is incredible that in one breath it's "Amputations and stonings!" and in the next it's "Islam is a moderate, soft religion."

I think he's got that "moderate, soft religion" confused with Western *liberalism*.
Malaysia is slowly slipping back into the 7th century...such is the case when Muslim gain control.
But there's no such thing as rape anyway.
Under Sharia law, to prove rape the victim must provide 4 male muslim witnesses (of good character) to the assault.
Most rapists tend not to take 4 male muslim witnesses (of good character) with then when they go raping.
And if it wasn't rape, then the sex was consensual, the woman has just committed adultery and should be stoned to death.

Reuters is talking through its ass again. PAS has made significant inroads in eating peach and pecan pie, if anything.

"Islam is a religion of peace" ... I believe that I understand what they mean: "Islam is a religion of salam" ...
Salam is just an arabic concept without any link to the christian concept of peace. It is the concept of "peace" of the Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars Episod III when he ask to Anakin to kill all persons that risk not to submit (the padawan: Student-Jedi): "Kill them all and there will be PEACE.": this is the meaning of arabic salam.
In this sense, Islam is really a religion of PEACE (salam): Islam submits everybody to itself by conversion or dhimmisation, kills all individuals that refuses this ... and there is islamic PEACE (SALAM).
This might explain the etymological link between SALAM and ISLAM.
