From Tabari, volume 9, page 131 "Then the men and women got up and left. The Messenger of God consummated his marriage with me in my house when I was nine years old. Neither a camel nor a sheep was slaughtered on behalf of me"......(The Prophet) married her three years before the Emigration, when she was seven years old and consummated the marriage when she was nine years old, after he had emigrated to Medina in Shawwal. She was eighteen years old when he died. NOTE FROM SAHIH MUSLIM Sahih Muslim, #5981 says that Aisha was so young that she played with her dolls in her house with her friends.

Oh yes, but I have had arguments with fellow Catholics (of all people) who defend this "cultural difference" by saying that most Biblical scholars believe the Virgin Mary was only around 12 or 13 when she became pregnant with Jesus and married St. Joseph. They argue that the only thing unique was that she didn't have intercourse with her spouse but all the other maidens of that era were marrying at that same age and having sex. Their "argument" is that if it was okay for the Hebrew people to do it then why not the Muslims.

Anyway there's no solid evidence that Hebrew girls were marrying at 12 or 13. I believe that is an exageration. Even if it were so there is a big difference between age 9 and age 13 in any case.
