This story is ambiguous. The judge ordered him released but said he could be detained. So is the Rumpled Academic out or not? If he is, I hope he is being very closely watched, and will soon be deported -- although it's likely he will simply resume jihadist activity from his new base of operations.
"Al-Arian Released on Bail," by Steve Newborn for WUSF, July 11 (thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist):
ALEXANDRIA, VA. (2008-07-11) The end result of the ruling by a federal judge in Alexandria, Va., may mean Sami Al-Arian is one step closer to being deported.Al-Arian was transferred to a Virginia jail nearly two years ago by federal authorities, who sought his testimony in a case against an Islamic charity. But the ousted USF computer science professor has refused, and has been hit with several contempt-of-court charges.
A federal judge there ordered Al-Arian released pending a trial on another contempt charge. But she has refused to block immigration authorities from detaining Al-Arian as a prelude to his deportation....
Deport him... and make sure the door hits him in the ass on the way out.
"rumpled academic"
Patches on his Harris tweed coat? His books in a green book bag?
What's it all about?
Bill O'Reilly may be an intellectual lightweight, but he's not lacking vision...he was the one who outed Al Arian as a Jihadi....two years before the feds went after him.
The trouble with all civilized societies is that the existing laws were not meant to deal with terrorism of the kind that Muslims bring. We all need special laws to deal with such scum. When convicted, there is no need to waste taxpayers' money by keeping them in jail and submitting to their halal demands. Just deport them to their sharia hell holes and save a lot of money. If you must jail them, serve them bacon and eggs for breakfast, ham sandwitch for lunch, and roast pork for dinner. That will cure them of jihad disease real fast.
There are two different kinds of detention at issue. He has been charged with contempt of court and could be detained on that basis. The judge, however, has ordered him released pending trial on the contempt charges. Since there is a deportation order against him, he is also subject to detention by the Immigration service if they decide that it is necessary to detain him until he is deported. The judge has not barred Immigration from detaining him. In sum, the judge has said that she doesn't consider it necessary to hold him for trial on the criminal charges against him but that she will not block Immigration from detaining him for their own reasons if they wish to. There's no contradiction.
Does anyone know whose passport he will be issued..in other words who took him in? It is so comforting..so pleasant for me to know that he won't enjoy the many blessings of living here anymore.hehehe
Cornelius...right on target. Must give respect to O'Reilly for calling this one correctly. Maybe we can get an angry Jessie Jackson to pay him a visit!
I see no reason to leave these jihadi's alive period. Until we realize this and change our laws, I won't believe we are truly serious on the war on terror. The whole reason to let people go is that they paid their debt to society and to give them an opportunity to become a good member of it.
With terrorism, their debt to society should be forefeiture of life. The recidivism rate is way too high and their evil ways can be too dangerous to the world to take a chance imo of letting these evil people go free.
It is not normal to plan or support to destroy countless numbers of people.
diaphanous,
Quite right. It makes no sense to let them go to plot mass- murder for another day.
That's why I prefer the Chinese approach:
BEIJING: Chinese authorities have replaced top police and security officials in the Muslim dominated Xinjiang province, which is the hotbed of separatism and political violence. They have also closed down 41 "illegal" places of worship.

Key passage from the article:
"Al-Arian was transferred to a Virginia jail nearly two years ago by federal authorities, who sought his testimony in a case against an Islamic charity. But the ousted USF computer science professor has refused, and has been hit with several contempt-of-court charges."
Of course he would refuse to testify; he's like a mafioso who cannot break the omerta, a gang member who won't rat on other members of the gang. If he did...his life wouldn't be worth spit.
Ishaq:231 - “Muslims are one ummah (community) to the exclusion of all men. Believers are friends of one another to the exclusion of all outsiders.”
Qur’an 33:58 “And those who annoy or malign Muslims bear (on themselves) a crime of calumny and a glaring sin.”
Loyalty to his fellow Muslims trumps everything else. His job is to protect the Ummah from scrutiny - by saying nothing, or by lying through his teeth. Whatever works.
For Muslims, Islam and Muslims = good and innocent, not-Islam, non-Muslim = bad, guilty, false.
From a pious Muslim POV, how dare those pesky unbelievers in America presume to arrest (horrors!), accuse (horrors!), and JUDGE and PUNISH (more horrors!!) the good, innocent Muslims.
Those who are charging this man with contempt - contempt of court, contempt for the law of America - don't know that they are hitting the nail on the head: for he has learned from his religion to regard non-Muslim laws, and institutions, and people, with nothing other than the most complete contempt.
Three Muslim texts setting out this attitude.
First, from Indian Sufi 'saint' Ahmad Sirhindi (1564-1624), letter no. 163:
"The honour of Islam lies in insulting kufr and kafirs.
One who respects the kafirs dishonours the Muslims... It is intended to hold them under contempt and to uphold the honour and might of Islam".
In the early 20th century, the Christian scholar of Islam, Samuel Zwemer found these words by a Baghdadi Muslim, in a French journal entitled, 'The Final Word of Islam to Europe' :
‘For us in the world there are only believers and unbelievers; love, charity, fraternity toward believers; contempt, disgust, hatred, and war against unbelievers.
In 1949, the Jewish scholar S Goitein encountered these words in the ‘New East’, an Arab monthly periodical describing itself as the ‘organ of the academic youth of the East’:
‘Let us fight fanatically for our religion; let us love a man-because he is a Moslem; let us honor a man- because he is a Moslem; let us prefer him to anyone else-because he is a Moslem; and never let us make friends with unbelievers, because they have nothing but evil for us.’
billposer is correct. This is just technicalities. Nothing dismissing the perjury charges is mentioned. It is just a matter of under what authority he is being held. He will be in the custody of ICE. He will probably attempt to get released on bond from the ICE custody, but since he has outstanding criminal charges, that is unlikely. Much sound and fury signifying nothing.
deport him and any family members...package deal..
