Prime Minister Stephen Harper is indifferent to Omar Khadr's plight because the Guantanamo Bay prisoner is "brown-skinned" and a Muslim, the leader of one of Canada's largest Islamic groups said Monday.
Harper's resistance to calls to repatriate the Canadian citizen shows he is pandering to Islamophobes, said Canadian Islamic Congress president Mohamed Elmasry.
"In this case, Mr. Harper is playing politics because of the backdrop of Islamophobia in this country," Elmasry said.
"This is where a leader comes in, to say this is really wrong and I have to correct that wrong by bringing this person (back to Canada) even if I lose some political points with Islamophobes."
Khadr's lawyers and others want Ottawa to repatriate Khadr, who was 15 when he was accused of killing a U.S. army medic in Afghanistan in 2002, from Guantanamo Bay.
In an opinion piece released to the media, Elmasry said Harper has shown a "shocking indifference" to those calls.
Elmasry contrasts Khadr's case with that of dual Canadian-British citizen William Sampson, who was freed from a death sentence in Saudi Arabia in 2003.
Prior to his release, Ottawa had said it had made pleas on Sampson's behalf to the highest levels of Saudi government.
"Why is Stephen Harper so callously indifferent to Omar Khadr's case?" Elmasry wrote.
"It's painfully obvious: William Sampson is a white Westerner while his fellow Canadian citizen, Omar Khadr, is brown-skinned and a Muslim."...
Details on Sampson's case can be found here. While both Sampson's and Khadr's cases involve accusations of murder, comparing them is a bit of a stretch. For that matter, it's worth noting that Harper wasn't Prime Minister when Sampson was released in 2003.
The term "Islamophobe" has been so overused that it elicits contempt and scorn, not fear or concern. Nobody cares if they're called this anymore unless they are meek or uninformed. In fact, it's becoming something of a badge of honor and functions as part and parcel of all that is occurring which is discrediting Islam in the eyes of millions upon millions as the years roll by. Like Islam itself, the term is a joke.

As a Canadian, I totally support Harper's stand on this issue. And the comments I have read in several newspapers are about 75% in favour of leaving Omar Khadr to the Americans to deal with as they will.

Brief introduction, via Wikipeida, to William Sampson, an innocent man imprisoned, tortured, and sentenced to death by the monstrous government of Saudi Arabia -- and he's not the only Westerner, but one of many, so cruelly mistreated:
"William Sampson (born in Nova Scotia, April 1959), is a dual British and Canadian national who was arrested in Saudi Arabia on December 17, 2000 on a variety of charges including terrorism, espionage and murder. He was imprisoned and tortured for two years and seven months, and finally released and permitted to leave Saudi Arabia, along with several of his co-accused, on August 8, 2003.
In 2005 Sampson published a book about his experience entitled Confessions of an Innocent Man: Torture and Survival in a Saudi Prison.
The son of a British father and a Canadian mother, Sampson spent periods in Canada, England, Scotland and Singapore. He holds an MBA from Edinburgh University and a PhD in biochemistry.
He worked in biochemical research and pharmaceutical marketing prior to moving to Riyadh in 1998 to work as a marketing consultant with the Saudi Industrial Development Fund, a government development bank.
On the morning of December 17, Sampson was snatched at gunpoint by police as he left his home in Riyadh on his way to work. He was taken to Al-Hair Prison where regular sessions of physical and psychological torture began immediately. Among other things, Sampson says he was severely and repeatedly beaten, foot whipped, deprived of sleep, and raped.
After six initial days of torture largely conducted by three men, Ibrahim al-Dali (officer of the Mabaheth, the Saudi Arabian general intelligence service), Khaled al-Saleh (officer of the Mabaheth) and a third unnamed man Sampson nicknamed "the Spiv," Sampson confessed and subsequently provided both written and videotaped confessions; he was sentenced to death by al-haad, a form of execution in which the victim is restrained and partially decapitated, resulting in a slow death. The torture continued in various forms until his release....
Sampson was one of eight foreign nationals arrested on allegations of involvement in a series of car bombings targeting Western expatriates in Riyadh. British engineer Christopher Rodway was killed and his wife injured in one explosion, and a second bomb injured Britons Mark Paine and Steve Coughlan. The Saudi authorities claimed that the bombings were part of a turf war within a Western liquor trafficking ring, though the men were further forced to confess to being spies for the British government....
After thirty-one months' incarceration in solitary confinement, Sampson and the others were suddenly released, and immediately deported to London, England. Charles, Prince of Wales, Rubin Carter, Justin Rodway, and Canadian MP's Stéphane Bergeron and Dan McTeague were part of the diplomatic effort to obtain the release. In July 2004, it was revealed that the final release was part of a prisoner exchange for the release of five Saudis from the U.S. prison camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Officials of both the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (UK) and the State Department (USA) have "anonymously" confirmed this information. A memorandum between officials of the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs referring to the prisoner exchange adds further evidence of its occurrence. The Belgian government has confirmed both the authenticity of the memo and its knowledge of the exchange, but has denied any direct involvement in the negotiations. The Canadian government refuses to comment on the matter.
On October 28, 2004, Sampson, along with Britons Sandy Mitchell and Les Walker, won a legal battle in London, UK that allows them to sue the men in Saudi Arabia they say tortured them into making the false confessions. In February 2005, a coroner's inquest into the death of Christopher Rodway, held in Trowbridge, concluded that there was no evidence to indicate that Sampson and Mitchell had any involvement in the death, and thus were not involved in the incident for which the Saudi Arabian government had arrested them. In June of 2006, a decision handed down at the Law Lords overturned the earlier ruling of the Court of Appeal. Sampson, along with Mitchell and Walker are now appealing to the European Court of Human Rights claiming that the law in Britain, as interpreted in the Lords decision, is a violation of their rights under Article 6 (right to a fair trial) of the European Convention on Human Rights.
In June 2006 the group's appeal was overturned by the Law Lords on the grounds that Saudi officials are protected in Britain by the State Immunity Act 1978. In 2007, Sampson was the subject of a National Film Board of Canada-co-produced documentary, Confessions of an Innocent Man.
Sampson has repeatedly criticised the Canadian government for its actions during his incarceration. Sampson states that his torturers were present at every meeting he had with Canadian diplomats and government representatives, who never insisted they leave and indeed accepted the Saudis' claims of Sampson's guilt, despite the lack of evidence, inconsistencies, and the statements to the contrary by Sampson and his supporters. He also alleges that he repeatedly informed embassy officials and Canadian medical professionals that he was being tortured, but to no avail.
In 2003, Amnesty International wrote:
Credible allegations that [Sampson] was tortured while in detention and forced to confess to a crime he very likely did not commit remain uninvestigated [by Canadian authorities].

Actually, Omar Khadr doesn't look any browner than I do on a hot summer day. I find it curious that Mohamed Elmasry's championship of Khadr arises not from concern for an apparent victim of injustice, but simply from solidarity with his religion, while at the same time he accuses those who do not share his view of the case of racism. His own interest is no more objective than racism. It could in fact be called a kind of reverse prejudice. Omar Khadr is supposed to deserve special consideration BECAUSE he is a Muslim? And anyone who doesn't agree is a racist?
Omar Khadr had the misfortune to be born into a family of fanatics. He had his head soaked in his parents fanaticism from an early age, and he has had his life ruined by it. But only a baby sitter would regard that as an "extenuating circumstance" in a murder case. Society is not a baby sitter, and neither is criminal justice.
It should be noticed, though, that while we inevitably hear from the Mohamed Elmasrys as to how unfairly Khadr is being treated, we do not hear, and would not be permitted to hear (at least not so loudly) from any critic who took it upon himself to point out that the problem, as much as it is anything else, is Islam. People have the misfortune to be raised with ideological extremes of many stripes: I grew up with rather more Catholicism than I care to remember. Only Muslims turn their extremes into the kind of motivation that will land you in Guantanamo Bay.
Mohamed Almasry is what in pragmatic circles is called a
"sh-t disturber". It is he who said that it is acceptable to kill any Israeli over 18 years of age.
His primary goal in life is to disrupt and upset Canadian governance and institutions by inventing and telling blatant lies.
He loves the limelight and usually makes a fool of himself by his irrational and hateful utterances and distortions.
His frequent railings against anything and everything that "outrages" him and his fellow Muslims and his imagined, fictional "wrongs' committed against his religion do more to encourage islamophobia in Canada than anything else.
