The original story earlier this month noted that the stated purpose of the calls was to discuss research, but the Saudi court ruled in favor of the husband's allegations that it was a front for an affair.
Sharia Alert. "Saudi Arabia: Academic gets 600 lashes for 'phone relationship' with female pupil," from Adnkronos International, July 30:
Riad, 30 July (AKI) - A Saudi court has sentenced a chemistry professor to 600 lashes and 8 months in jail for a 'telephone relationship' with a female student.
The student, whose marriage allegedly broke down as result of the relationship got 350 lashes and 4 months in prison.
The academic, who worked in a teaching hospital in the south of the country was convicted on the basis of the student's husband's testimony, according to Arabic satellite TV station Al-Arabiya.
The student's husband claimed his marriage broke down in 2004 as a result of his wife's relationship with the academic, who has said he will appeal the sentences at the Supreme Council of Magistrates.
The academic also hopes human rights groups will back his case.
New heights of incredulity.
Breakthrough--another advance, another boost to Saudi Science, Technology, and Education!
His case? What about the woman?
Could the good professor spare a gasp for her?
Cannot be true!
In the last 2 months the BBC's Saudi correspondent reported great changes in this area. He said the Religious Police were banned from shopping Malls and he saw a burka’d babe flashing her cleavage to a boyfriend in one. Not only that, he had “heard” that when the Religious Police entered a Mall and tried to arrest a couple in a coffee shop for sitting at the same table the other customers beat up the police and threw them out.
Just listen to the BBC and you will find things are great.
Did the husband follow the rules in 4:34 first? Did he banish her from bed and then beat her to a pulp for her work-related cellphone disobedience before complaining to the cops? One wonders -- do Muslim males have to follow Koranic procedure before resorting to the courts, much like litigants in Western countries must follow civil procedure, or else have their cases kicked?
According to Mohammed and the imams who declaim the wonders of the Koranic approach to domestic bliss, a little in-house self-help should have fixed everything. Kids today.
Oh my. The man got more of a punishment than the woman. However, here are a couple of possibilities that may play out.
1) He wins his appeal but she still receives her sentence.
2) His sentence is reduced to 1/3 of his original sentence, she still receives her full sentence.
3) He loses and the both receive full punishment. The only one that has a credible chance since there apparently is no real evidence other than the ex's own paranoia and blame projection.
Boy, what a society. I'm gonna buy my ticket to the KSA right now. Wonder what movie they will have on the flight. The Wonderful Life and Times of Adolf Hitler, How to Smack your Bitch Up, 1001 ways to divorce your wife: Muslim Style, and finally, Rasheed and his future 72 Virgins.
Ah, but *which* "How to Smack your Bitch Up"? This supremely Islamic franchise has more installments than Nightmare on Elm Street or Halloween -- just search MEMRI or Youtube for Islam + wife beating.
The best one, according to the critics, is the one where the learned imam goes through a selection of long sticks and offers his judgment on each. Not a lot of action, but then again the real dramatic payoff comes at home.
Thank Allah there were no cellphones in the Prophet's time!
Mohammed would have a cellphone bill so big.............
Well, think of all the "phone relationships" he would be establishing.
Oh, so now human rights groups should take notice! If he is truly interested in human rights, this saudi professor should have renounced islam a long time ago. Islam finally caught up with him so now he wants someone else to get him off the hook. Can't feel sorry for any univesity-educated person who insists on remaining a muslim.
How ridiculous and I laugh at the stupidity of Islamic Sharia law.
Yea, what she said!
I am curious as to how these guys were caught. Was there a 'warrantless wiretap' on the phone? Do muslims and muslim countries 'tap' phones? And if they do, why would they be ok with it in their country but not ok with it here in the U.S.?
Just curious.
And if these guys get convicted then I am going to go to court and prosecute my girlfriend and best friend from Junior high school. They started a phone relationship and it destroyed my relationship with my girlfriend (that is the story and I am sticking with it). Who cares whether it was four years ago or thirtyfive years ago? I will have my day in court, we will see those infidels pay. It was the feathered hair and the new cassette tape players that got my girlfriend to stray (I only had an eight track player)....I am confident it was because of the Zionists!!!

Yes, that's true but you do realise that advanced cell phone technology was actually predicted by Mohammed? On the surface he was talking about palm trees and wiping ones behind with stones but if you know what he was really talking about the prediction is stunningly clear.
The females gets less lashes than the male? This must qualify as huge progress for women's rights in the bedrock nation of Cesspoolia.
Six hundred lashes? Three hundred fifty lashes? Such sentences are tantamount to a death penalty, as the flesh would be completely flayed off the body. The injuries would be too extensive for healing to occur; even if the victims temporarily survived such an ordeal, infection would set in and death would follow soon thereafter. Unless, of course, the punishments would be administered "lightly," as Ali and others interpret the Koranic passage concerning wife beating. I can just see it - six hundred lashes for the professor and three hundred fifty lashes for his student - with a toothbrush, while the authorities ensure that no bruising results.
This is why I prefer Jamaica over SOWdi Barbaria:

commonsense... I read that the way they handle multiple lashings is not to kill the person by giving the whole 600/350 lashes on the same day. They meter them out so that just as you are healing from the first thirty lashes or so, it's time for some more. Eight months in jail is plenty of time to administer six hundred lashes without killing the victim...
Thanks, duh_swami.
WHAT? 600 lashes would kill any person, this is a sentence of death for both, and is this not torture? after 60 to 100 lashes the human system starts to stop working so by the time you get to 600 that person is dead. has bush/UN, been told?

Remember that 14-year-old Iranian boy who died after receiving 85 lashes for the 'crime' of breaking his Ramadan fast?
Where's SHAMNESTY??!! HRW..??!! Meanwhile "n"pr is bellyaching that "journalists" can't access the shamnesty site.
What a bunch of fools..
Any suspect under sharia law is presumed guilty as charged even after proven innocent.
There is no escape from the punishment even after the suspect is proven innocent.
Welcome to sharia law!
Sorry I forgot to mention they were bitching about China not letting "journalists" access sites like HRW and amnesty.
I thought they were in China to cover the games.
Stupid me. They're there to stir things up and show the world how "good" they are and how much they "love" humanity and how fiercely they fight for the rights of the oppressed.
Should be alot safer for these Western journos to do this in China than in Egypt or in SOWdi.

Saudi corporal punishment is comparatively mild and doesn't normally cause lacerations; see above. Sentences of many strokes are divided into installments.
Islamic justice, so-called, Saudi style does not preserve "family values," Family Values. In fact, in our najis kufr eyes, it constitutes arbitrary, irrational barbarism; it is rife with, and preserves hypocrisy.
I can beat you with a rubber hose and not leave marks. The beating will still be wrong. You don't walk away from such a beating like a spanking from a loving parent, a sore bottom but more the wiser. No, you are scarred for life, even if there are no physical scars. And God help the woman and what will happen to her in jail while she awaits her next "installment." Nevermind of course that the only reason they were even charged is because the ex-husband can't wrap his tiny little brain around the fact that as a husband, he sucked. I could not have been that she didn't show interest in him because he is an ass, no it had to be because another man entered the picture. Well let's follow that logic, of course on the MASSIVE assumption there ever was an affair. If another man grabs your wife's attention, then there is something lacking in the ol' homestead. So it would just prove what a loser he is. This is his revenge for being a jackass. And then for a poster to so casually state that saudi corporal punishment is "comparatively mild" is......well as John C, my fellow Jovian, so aptly put it, is hypocrisy.
Muslims!
Stop using your cellular phones! It is Haram to talk to unrelated members of the opposite sex!
However, it is still Halal to use a cell phone to detonate a bomb to kill infidels.
Praise Allah!
If this isn't cruel and inhuman, you can hit me 600 times with a miswaq, by Thunder!
