Suicide bombings target Shi'ite pilgrims in Iraq

Sunni-Shi'ite Jihad Update. "Spate of suicide attacks kill more than 50 in Iraq," from Agence France-Presse, July 28:

Three women bombers blew themselves up on Monday in a crowd of Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad, one of a string of attacks in Iraq that killed at least 51 people, undermining hopes of a drop in violence.
Scores of people were also wounded in the attacks, which follow a relative lull in the sectarian violence that has ravaged the country since February 2006, when insurgents blew up a Shiite mosque in the central city of Samarra.
The triple attack in Baghdad killed at least 25 pilgrims as they headed to a holy shrine for a major religious ceremony on the Shiite Muslim calendar that has been marred by bloodshed in the past, security officials said.
Another 22 people were killed in a suicide bombing during a protest rally in the northern oil city of Kirkuk, and gunfire in a panicked stampede that followed, local officials said.
Among the dead in the Baghdad bombings were women and children, security and hospital officials told AFP, adding that about 70 other people were wounded.
The bombers struck in the Karrada district of central Baghdad as pilgrims were making their way on foot towards Kadhimiyah in the north of the Iraqi capital, site of a Shiite festival on Tuesday.
"At least 25 people were killed and more than 70 were wounded in three suicide attacks, probably by females suicide bombers," a police official said.
On Sunday, gunmen shot dead seven pilgrims in Madin, a town south of Baghdad, despite tight security for Tuesday's ceremony honouring revered imam Mussa Kadhim that is expected to attract up to one million worshippers.
Pilgrims from around the country are flocking to the Iraqi capital to mourn the revered imam who died 12 centuries ago, prompting authorities to step up security amid concerns over attacks.
Systematic violence -- suicide bombings and sectarian killings -- have dropped sharply in the capital since a peak in 2006, but Iraqi police are worried about a wave of attacks in the city of six million people.
Major General Kassam Atta, spokesman for city security, told reporters that his force had information regarding the possibility of attacks targeting pilgrims during this year's festival.
"We ask people to help in all ways with our security forces," Atta said, adding that up to one million people were expected.
Checks have been particularly stringent amid what appears to be [a] growing trend of using women in insurgent bombings, which have claimed hundreds of lives across the volatile country....

...and tolerance.

This should be seen by as many people as possible. I am putting it here, and elsewhere, hoping that many will see it, and many will send it on, so it may spread throughout the Internet:

Good! I am glad they are killing one another rather than feasting on infidel blood for allah. The religion of human sacrifice. These blood thirst murdering barbarians. How sad that they have been allowed into the West and other nations throughout the world. They will be able to have fresh infidel blood for allah in those countries.

I've often wondered how Islam, which claims to be uncompromisingly mono-theistic, can have so many shrines, holy places, and pilgrimages that have nothing to do with Allah.
There are so many "holy places" that it seems Mohammad didn't destroy the 360 idols at Mecca, he just dispersed them throughout the Mid-East.

That's the Shi'a, not the Sunnis. The Saudis, for example, felt no compunction in tearing down all sorts of buildings in Mecca itself, including some associated with Muhammad, and many of historic value (the latest being an Ottoman fort). See articles on this by the Saudi architect Sami Angawi -- who used to go to the same Starbucks in Harvard Square as one of Bin Laden's brothers -for more on Saudi destruction of history, even of, or especially of, Islamic history.

Oh dear. I didn't know. That's worrisome.

The same Saudis who, unleashed 9/11 on USA, and are now, thanks to the POTUS/commander-in-chief, whose extended family are the same Saudis, "allies" in the "war-on-terror" under which, funds and arms are supplied to the same Saudis, who unleashed 9/11, thanks to the POTUS/commander-in-chief, whose extended family are the same Saudis...
.....just some dots to connect.

Suicide bombers

All in the name of the "Religion of Peace".

I guess this example of "Muslim outreach" is Sunni outreaching to Shi'a Muslims. They should have a motto such as, "Reach out and kill someone".

These sorry pieces of humanity have been killing each other since yesterday, into today, and I'm sure it will continue well into tomorrow. When they can't find an infidel to kill, they kill each other, and when they don't kill each other, they kill family members. I ask again, what ever made Mr. Bush think he could bring freedom, democracy, or order to a people with seventh century values, and absolutely no respect for human life. In the long run I fear that the investment made by America both monetarily, and in American lives, will be for naught, and this makes me sick!

Just went to the link, no problems, and very informative, thank you Hugh.
The "worm" pop up is a common worm in itself, a re-director, designed to get you to allow it's "scan", and draw you to the site of origin. I suggest you run a virus scan, an ad-ware scan, and ensure that any other legitimate anti virus tools you may have are updated

During the time after 9/11 I really thought that our military and leaders had Islam and the middle east all figured out. But I saw that our military didn't want to win the war. So I bought books and studied Islam. Now I see that no one in Washington has a clue as to what is going on with Islam or how to win this war. Whats more, they are too pompus to even lower themselves to the thought that they made a mistake about Islam the "religion of peace". They refuse (both dems and repubs) to acknowledge that Islam is the problem. Somehow in their dreams they think that after 1400 years, Islam can be reformed by our troops.

It is not just one party but both parties. Neither party has a clue. Neither wants to do their job and protect us. Neither wants to stop the enemy at the border. Both want to invite them into our country illegal or legal, they don't care. It is as if no one in Washington ever read a history book. They are all in love with the power, prestige, and money in Washington and don't give a hoot about us or our countries well being.

are these people "islamophobics"

1,000,000 pilgrims...sure are a lot of potential Muslim targets walking around for the other Muslims to attack...Allah must really hate Muslims..

On Feb. 7, 2002, the greatest military genius in the history of the Jewish people, a statesman with the foresight of Ezekiel, flew from Israel to the United States. Ariel Sharon had an urgent message to President Bush: Please don't go into Iraq, and bomb Iran from the air instead. Bush was blessed with the friendship and councel of the greatest man of our time, and yet, he threw this blessing away. Instead of listening to the old Zion Lion (Ariel means "lion of God"), he listened to his neurotic, puny neocons who considered Iraq an easier target. It is now obvious that if the US bombed the much stronger Iran, it would have cost us far less in both life and treasure because the mission would be more clear-cut, and would not involve occupation of which the mightiest military on Earth has once again proved incapable of. As always, Arik proved to be absolutely right. Even before he took off for Washington, DC, he sent his entire security cabined ahead of himself, and, for a whole week, the Israeli officials tried in vain to convince the Bush administration not to invade Iraq and strike Iran instead to remove a real, intolerable threat:

One opposes Sharon at his peril.

On Yom Kippur, Oct.6, 1973, in the largest tank assault since WWII, a heavily armored Syrian horde overran the Southern half of the Golan Hights and threatened to stampede down on Israeli population centers. Simultaneously, an even larger Egyptian force had successfully crossed the Suez canal along its entire 100-mile lenghth, only instead of tanks, the charge was led by well-trained infantry armed with powerful new Soviet guided anti-tank Malyutka M9M14 missles known to NATO as AT-3 Saggers. Israel's elite Sinai division, its only full-strenghth active-duty tank division tried to oppose them but suffered a terrible defeat losing two-thirds of its tanks and hundreds of men. Two reserve tank divisions were hastily called up and rashed to the canal to plug the gaping breach in Israel's defenses. They were led by Maj. Gen. Avraham "Bren" Adan and Maj. Gen. Ariel "Arik" Sharon, both able commanders. However, tragically for Israel, right up their chan of command were the 2 worst generals of the IDF, to whom I will refer here as the DoubleFool. Worse yet, both were personally hostile to Sharon and compulsively opposed any ideas coming from him. They opposed, and Israel paid with the lives of its brave soldiers.
Adan's march was plagued from the start by confusion caused by lack of intelligence and uninformed, misleading orders from his superiors. It ran into numerous Egyptian ambushes and suffered painful casualties. By contrast, Sharon, who knew Sinai better than any other Israeli, confidently led his division to the canal and arrived there without any problems and in half the time planned. With his keen sense of terrain, he took positions on strategic higher ground opposite the only vulnerable part of the enemy fromt that the great man had correctly identified. In the morning of Monday, Oct. 8, Arik lined up his 200 tanks on the Havraga ridge offering a wide, panoramic view on the enemy's huge deployment and the canal glistening behind. With their superb gunnery skills, the Israeli tank crews could hit any point of enemy positions within 3,000 yards. Aided by their own excellent positions, they beat back several Egyptian attacks without losing a man or a tank, and were ready to stampede down on the enemy, but Arik decided to wait for Adan's division. As always, it was instantly clear for General Sharon what to do:

- Merge the 2 divisions into one armored force;
- Attack together as a huge wedge of steel sharply pointed at this one and only chink in the enemy armor;
- Break through enemy defense lines through sheer weight of massed armor;
- Push the enemy forces apart to open the gap wide enough to support a reverse crossing;
- Put at least 200 tanks accross;
- Rampage on the other side, shelling the enemy troops in the back accross the canal, crushing the new, advanced Soviet SAM-6 anti-aircraft missle batteries that kept Israel's famed Air Force out of action into the ground, destroying enemy's ammunition depos, fuel dumps and supplies;
- Get the hold of the pipelines delivering drinking water to the Egyptian troops accross the canal and turn the taps off on the enemy;
- Force the surrender of the surrounded Egyptian armies and threaten Cairo.

This was Arik's plan, but the DoubleFool thought otherwise. Adan's division was already approaching and was about to merge with Sharon's, when an order came over the radio. To his despare, Sharon was ordered to move south, away from Adan, all the way south to the southern end of the canal, with vague and unrealistic orders to "try to cross on enemy's own bridges". Sharon passionately pleaded to stay where he was to combine with Adan for a joint attack, but was threatened with immediate dismissal and complied with a heavy heart. His division was still pulling out onto the empty desert backroad leading south when he heard over the radio that Adan's division was being massacred. Not only 2-divisional attack was not launched, but not even one-divisional one. Instead, Adan's division was sent into the jaws of the Egyptian anti-tank crews in small, easily shreddable portions, one battallion at a time, and, battallion after battallion, the Egyptians destroyed almost the entire Adan's division.
Sharon rushed his division south, covering 50 miles of the 70-mile distance in 3 1/2 hours, hoping desperately that they will let him at the enemy somewhere, anywhere. It was not to be. Another order came over the radio ordering him to halt. The division stopped in its tracks in the middle of nowhere. A courrier arrived by helicopter and handed Sharon a written order informing him that Adan's division has been destroyed and his, Sharon's, is the only one left to put between the enemy and Tel Aviv. The same commanders who ordered Sharon to abandon his strategic positions earlier that day, were now ordering him to return to those very positions. Numb with rage, Sharon ordered his division about-face. The DoubleFool sent them on a fools errand driving back and forth through empty desert all day, while their fellow Israeli soldiers were fighting and dying, in desperate need of help.
Night has fallen when they arrived back. The great position that Sharon was forced to abandon were taken by the Egyptians, and as far as an eye could see, like funeral pyres, there were piles of burning wreckage that used to be Adan's division. That night capped the darkest day in Israel's military history.
It took Sharon to eventually turn the tide and save Israel from a crushing military defeat, but at a terrible cost in lives.

Our Iraq war bears all the marks of an oppose-Sharon-and-pay calamity: we cannot win it and cannot get out, for as bad things are now, they will get worse, much worse if we retreat in defeat, which will be a tremendous boost for the Global Jihad. This is not Vietnam: "declare victory and go home" will not work, for the emboldened jihadists will chase us to our porch, and off the porch, and into our living room. There is no face-saving way out of it, only a face-smashing way. Iran must be bombed and destroyed. Arik's plan is still the only plan.

interesting account of Sharon's advice to Bush in 2002.

And here we all are, six years later...looking down the barrel of a bunch of psychotic murderous mullahs about to get their thumbs on the nuclear button.

By the way: what's your source for the Yom Kippur war account?

Sadly, this is one of the only ways a Mohammedan woman has of getting "free" of Islam.

Becoming a hunted apostate, the other.

Sadly, this is one of the only ways a Mohammedan woman has of getting "free" of Islam.

Becoming a hunted apostate, the other.

The article from The Washington Post to which a poster (Ruslan Tolkhchukov) provides a link above should remind everyone -- but of course it won't remind Pat Buchanan and his ilk -- that the Israeli government and its military were always worried about Iran and never thought Iraq, or Saddam Hussein, was the main problem. And of course the Israelis are now no doubt horrified to discover that the Americans not only are stuck in Iraq, but because of Tarbaby Iraq, and Little Tarbaby (see Rory Stewart's excellent piece in, of all places, this not will have no intention of taking action against Iran for fear of what this might do "in Iraq"(as if the situation in Iraq will not revert, as soon as the Americans leave, to the low-level, and possibly gradually increasing sectarian and ethnic warfare that will come, inevitably, and inexorably, and that there is nothing the Americans, surge or no surge, bombing Iran or leaving it alone, can do to prevent Iraq, like water, from eventually seeking its own level.

And not only is the Bush Administration apparently determined to ignore its responsibility, its duty, to deal with Iran adequately (and after five years of negotiations, or pseudo-negotiations, with Iranians well-versed in every kind of deception and inveiglement, any further reliance on "talks" is silly), but what is worse, it apparently seeks to discourage Israel, perhaps by denying it critical information from spy satellites, or other kinds of aid it has every right to expect it would be given, if it decides, yet again, to do the difficult and dangerous job -- the attack on the Osirak Reactor in 1981, and the attack on a nuclear installation of some kind a few months ago on Al-Kibar in Syria -- that apparently the United States, with all its military power and might, is now refusing to do, on the absurd grounds that this will "interfere" with the splendid results being obtained -- there are none, and can be none -- in Iraq, in Afghanistan. There is nothing that can possibly be achieved in either of those tarbabies that would weaken the Camp of Islam one-thousandth as much as would a successful attack on Iran's nuclear project. But this apparently is something that those whose own rigidity (in their refusal to reconsider their policy vis-a-vis the menace of Islam), in their stupidity (inability to realize that what constitutes "victory" is to arrive at a new situation which results in the Camp of Islam being weakened -- and that can happen with an attack on Iran, but in Iraq, only through an American withdrawal).

How maddening it all is.

Hugh, thanks for your clarification on the Shia love of shrines, vs. the Sunni indifference to, or even antipathy for, historic Islamic buildings. You mention the Saudi destruction of historic Islamic buildings. Perhaps they don't want anyone to inquire too closely into the early days of Islam. Old buildings would be a temptation to antiquarians and archeologists. Who knows what a proper archeological dig might turn up in Mecca or Medina? Do you know if any has ever been done? Have there ever been any digs in the Mid-East focussing on the early days of Islam? All the digs I've heard of are concerned with much earlier days -- classical Rome at the latest.

And not only is the Bush Administration apparently determined to ignore its responsibility, its duty, to deal with Iran adequately (and after five years of negotiations, or pseudo-negotiations, with Iranians well-versed in every kind of deception and inveiglement, any further reliance on "talks" is silly)

Oh.. "ignore it's responsibility"? Bush Administration has gone well beyond "responsibility" of taking the nation to war. Bush admin went well beyond the "responsibiliry" and lied to the nation, costing American lives, as so eloquently presented here:

Every time I hear the phrase "Bush lied" I think "Democratic talking points". At the time, every intelligence agency in the world agreed that Iraq had WMD's. Even Clinton in a speach in 1998, said that Iraq was getting WMD's and was the worst enemy. At the time I thought it was a good idea to "mix it up" with the "Arabs" in the middle east and learn how to fight these people..

Having said that, the Bush administration has not learned anything and has not made any midcourse corrections to the war.(other than the surge, which is the proper way to wage conventional war i.e. take territory and hold it)They are stuck in stupid and operating with blinders. It is as though they are taking orders from the Saudi's. They have learned nothing about the central theme in the region...Islam. And do you know what?...The democrats haven't learned anything either.

Can anyone name any pearls of wisdom in Washington from either party who is actively talking about Islam, itself, as being the enemy? I know a few conserative repubs and one well known dem who was kicked out for being too conservative and is now elected as an independent. These folks are closest, but I don't want to go down the same road again and depend on someone in Washington being smart enough to learn as they go. I now doubt that anyone in Washington has the capacity to learn as they go. Whats more, "Washington" is now, more than ever, being infiltrated by Islamic moles in all our military, justice, and intelligence agencies. This will reduce and not increase any future ability to learn about the real problem we face in the middle east.

The only answer that I know is to bomb them whenever needed to keep them in line.

Oops.I was speaking of bombing the middle east not Washinton, in my above post. Sorry about the typo.

We could use few more bombings like this one against Shiites. The hijab makes it easy for mulim terrorists to be muslim terrorists.

Perhaps one day the muslims will ban the hijab to protect themselves from muslim terrorists. Do you think that day will come soon?

The problem is that even if the muslims ban the hijab to protect against muslim terrorists the west will not ban the hijab because the west is too politically stupid to do so.

Every time I hear the phrase "Bush lied" I think "Democratic talking points".

We have two viable parties, the dems and repubs. I have believed for a long long time now that neither is a good choice. It is only a matter of the lesser of two evils.

I have many people that I talk to. The dems all say that Bush lied and the repubs all make excuses for him. All political talking points.

I see him as a person from a prominent well connected family. But more important is the reality that he has had very limited people experience and a strong desire to help the world (at our expense). Add to this his political ambition which modifies his previous mentioned attributes, and thats how I see it. To put it another way, he was raised in lolly pop land and still lives in lolly pop land.
There are a lot of people that fit this description but they should not be president.
He's probably a nice guy to have a beer with and I do not think he is a crook or anything close to it. He is just in the wrong job.

Now if that sounds like I am defending the dunce, fine. But corrupt or greedy don't fit him. Timid, probably.

Right on, Hugh. My sentiment exactly.

Dumbledoresarmy and all of you, folks:

My main source is the book "The Yom Kippur War" by Abraham Rabinovich. I am 55, and have been a war history buff since my childhood in the Soviet Union, and this is by far the best war book I have ever read. I highly recommend it to you all.
I also have a veritable Sharoniana in my home of all English-language books on Ariel Sharon, my greatest hero, including the good man's authobiography, "Warrior". Another good book is "Sharon: Israel's Warrior Politician" by Sigalit Zetouni, Anita Miller and Jordan Miller. The amount of valuable information contained in this relatively small book is awesome. The precise dates of a vast number of interesting important events is particularly appreciated by a stickler like me. "Ariel Sharon: A Life" by Nir Hefez and Gady Bloom is "fuzzier" on dates, especially of long-ago events, but the most "up-to-date" on recent times. Being Israeli, the authors also had greater access to Israeli sources who knew Ariel and his family personally. They also provide eye-opening insider information on what drove Sharon to disengage from Gaza: an all-out pressure on him at the end of 2003 by Bush, Powell and Rice to make concessions to the "Palestinians". That's what they did instead of listening to the great man's precious advice: got in his face, aggressively bossing him. And all that for what? To give Tony Blair a "political cover" at home where the same crowds who enthusiastically backed him in the slander, scourging and crucifiction of Serbia were now up in arms against his joining Bush in the Iraq war, so he wanted appease them at the expence of Israel who had nothing to do with the war and tried to talk Bush out of it.
Another book by Uri Dan, Ariel's loyal life-long friend sheds the light on him from a special personal perspective.
I myself want to write a book on Ariel in a plain American English speak, including severe, no-punches-pulled condemnation of the dhimmitude and EUrabian and US governments and elites, a wake-up to the apocaliptic danger of the Global Jihad. The book is all but written in my head and is ready to be transferred to paper. It is just the matter of finding a publisher who will make a deal with the outspoken fellow like me (=: .

Thank you for sharing with us the detail descriptions and your ensight.

I believe that a war is won by first having the correct theme or reasoning, understanding the enemy (competition), and by attending to great detail down to a personal basis. Much like running a great business except the stakes are life and death. It is either win or lose. Ariel Sharon is a hero that I too admire. He is a winner.

Our current leaders do not understand any of the above.

Three women causing sooo much death, grief, and physical pain - I suspect that agony and lifechanging and unending harm to body, spirit, and mind.

But, when it doesn't happen TO US OR OUR FAMILY OR ANYONE WE KNOW, we can call these women and their handlers and the community that creates them and takes satisfaction in their efforts "Freedom Fighters" who are using the only weapon at hand to take on the invaders and occupiers of their country.

Is there nothing that these people can do, that the "liberals" or our world will not justify?

Will the women get 72 virgins?

In the video below, a woman tells about what happened to her and her family - when Palastineans were envited to come into Lebanon.

She also tells about the culture that created the hospital in Israel where sick and wounded Lebenise Christians and Muslims were treated as well as Isael's wounded military men. - and she tells of a Muslim woman, who'd just been helped, wishing she could kill the people who were helping her. Wow.

http://multimedia.heritage.org/content/wm/Lehrman-092706awvx

Am I being unfair? Maybe? Is there anything wrong with the stories from today being out of the news by tomorrow, but mistreatment (Not blowing up - and not involving children) of prisonors in Cuba will be a story that seems like it will never die? I think so.

I close by wishing people a happy summer. Perhaps with another cultural background, I'd be wishing everyone the opportunity to kill as many infidals as possible. The woman in the video says a saying, in Arabic, known throughout the Arab world is "First comes Saturday ... Then comes Sunday." meaning first we kill the Jews, then we kill the Christians.

If I'm wrong about what Islam teaches, and if Islam is the religion of peace,then, by definition, any members of that group will forgive me and wish me well. - Perhaps they will state that they alos believe that hurting innocent's is not something that G.d thinks is a wonderful idea.
