UN notes that Gaza has world's highest jobless rate, blames Israel

Remember when, during the Gaza pullout, former World Bank President James Wolfenson, Mortimer Zuckerman and others raised $14 million to buy the Gaza greenhouses and give them to the Palestinians? At that time the New York Times reported that his call for money was received enthusiastically by the American Jewish community: "Within 48 hours, Mr. Zuckerman said, he had his $14 million. And the Palestinians had a shot at inheriting relatively intact the greenhouses whose vegetables and flowers have been a major source of Israeli export income, and, not incidentally, about 3,500 desperately needed Palestinian jobs."

They "had a shot." And what did they do with that shot? Palestinian jihadists destroyed some of the greenhouses. They looted others. They used some for smuggling tunnels.

But the unemployment rate in Gaza? Israel's fault, of course!

"U.N. Says Gaza Has World Highest Jobless Rate," from Israel National News, July 28 (thanks to Dennis):

(IsraelNN.com) Unemployment in the Gaza region stands at 45 percent, the highest in the world, according to a report issued by the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. It noted that nearly all of Gaza's factories have shut down in the past several years. The unemployment rate in Judea and Samaria was estimated at 25 percent.

The report blamed Israel's closure of the Gaza crossings and restrictions of fuel as causes for the disastrous state of the economy. It did not note that the Gaza economy was flourishing before the Oslo War broke out almost eight years ago.

Could the Useless Nations be even more useless? How much is the PA/Hamas/Fatah paying the UNRRA to create such terrible lies and deceit?

Pathetic!

"The report blamed Israel's closure of the Gaza crossings and restrictions of fuel as causes for the disastrous state of the economy."

of course the reporter doesn't mention the reasons for the fuel restriction are because the Muslims kept attacking the fuel trucks and kept lobbing rockets daily into Israel...The Palestinians are lucky they get any fuel..The reporter also fails to mention none of the Arab oil producing nations have delivered so much as one gallon of fuel to Gaza..It seems the other Muslims don't like Palestinians either..but Allah knows whats best..

UN notes that Gaza has world's highest jobless rate, blames Israel

Israel notes UN has world's highest brainless rate, world yawns.

Id feel bad for the Gazans but I dont.

big deal i think its more that the average muslim arab only will work at jobs he does no consider beneath his dignity and would rather live off the modern jizha (the hand-outs from western Christian nations)than work as a servant ie a fast order cook or janitor ect. thats more likely the cause of the unenployment and does'nt UN realy stand for united nutcaseses

I wondr what the jobless rate would be if they didnt have like 10 kids per family.

Then there's this little whopper of a lie:

It noted that nearly all of Gaza's factories have shut down in the past several years.

Factories have shut down? Really, you mean all those factories, with them high paying union jobs, manufacturing automobiles, TVs, heavy farm equipment, and high-tech medical devices? OMG, what a nasty lot them Israelis are!

Well, at least the Useless Nations RRA forgot to say that those bomb making factories are still operational, and running full capacity.

What a bunch of morons. (And that includes the UN and the Gazans.)

Looters strip Gaza greenhouses

Facilities seen as key to Palestinians’ rebuilding of area vacated by Israelis

NEVE DEKALIM, Gaza Strip - Palestinians looted dozens of greenhouses on Tuesday, walking off with irrigation hoses, water pumps and plastic sheeting in a blow to fledgling efforts to reconstruct the Gaza Strip.

American Jewish donors had bought more than 3,000 greenhouses from Israeli settlers in Gaza for $14 million last month and transferred them to the Palestinian Authority. Former World Bank President James Wolfensohn, who brokered the deal, put up $500,000 of his own cash.

Palestinian police stood by helplessly Tuesday as looters carted off materials from greenhouses in several settlements, and commanders complained they did not have enough manpower to protect the prized assets. In some instances, there was no security and in others, police even joined the looters, witnesses said.

“We need at least another 70 soldiers. This is just a joke,” said Taysir Haddad, one of 22 security guards assigned to Neve Dekalim, formerly the largest Jewish settlement in Gaza. “We’ve tried to stop as many people as we can, but they’re like locusts.”

I blame Suckerman.

The ancient pagans had in their mythology the harpies which would foul their own nests. The term harpie is still used by literate people.

When people are more interested in murder and mayhem and the UN sponsored schools allow that lunacy to persist, it is a wonder that there is any productive work being done.

Before another cent is spent by the international community on Gaza there should be a plebiscite to determine if these people even want peace.

If they do not want peace, sending money to them would only empower them to continue in their hatefilled ways.

Have a vote to determine the will of the gazan arabs, if they want peace help them if they want war leave them to their own devices.

I hope that bit about the former World Bank President James Wolfensohn losing $500,000 of his own money is true. And that he couldn't sue or cry to any other party to recover it.

Robert,

Sorry to say, but I think I smell a rat in this story.

I usually review the source material for any of JW/DW articles in an effort to verify accuracy.

In this case, I did fall for the INN's source (the UNRRA) as probably being valid. No so.

The INN makes its claims "according to a report issued by the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration." I scoured the UN website for any trace of this article, and the UNRRA. Absolutely nothing could be found. Even the UNRRA is not on any organizational chart.

So a simple web search (via answers.com), I found this:

United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency

Disbanded in 1949. So the question remains: who's being duplicitous here? You can find plenty of similar stories at the UNRWA web site, but there's not text there coming close to the INN's story.

Indeed, those rats in Jerusalem are becoming clever.

What's the unemployment rate in khat-chewing Yemen? In Saudi Arabia, where if you don't count as work the showing up for an hour or two a day by Saudis, the unemployment rate (forget about what unemployed Saudis get, which is far more than what the armies of foreign workers receive) is close to 100%. What's the rate in Iraq, or would be the rate, if the Americans were not handing out tens of billions of dollars like confetti to "create" jobs? What's the Arab employment rate in the sheikdoms? In Libya? How many Muslims spend their time playing cards or dominoes or somesuch in Cairene cafes and hubble-bubble emporia? Who in Pakistan, by the way, is hard at work?

For god's sake, in the lands of inshallah-fatalism, when one can always count on Allah for oil-manna, or on the Infidels for the Jizyah of foreign aid as currently, cravenly, handed over without anything being given or even, at this point, expected, in return, how many can really be called "employed" in the Western understanding of that term?

Why should it be different from the Arabs of Gaza, whose summer project is the same as their fall, winter, and spring projects: to supplement what they get from UNRWA with what billions they can continue inveigle out of European and North American donors (never the rich Arabs, never the Saudis -- that would never do), and then to work, if they can be said to work at all, at the Jihad to destroy Israel. That's their vocation. That's their avocation. That's their life. And the more they are given, the more that Israel supplies them with -- gasoline, electricity, all the fxins -- the more time they will have, the more effort they will have conserved to spend on, making life as hellish for Israel as they possibly can.

That's why they dig. To smuggle in arms. Not to build an underground infrastructure, like some sun-baked Con Ed men. That's what they plot and scheme at. Smuggling arms. Building weapons. Distributing and hiding weapons. Oh, it's a full-time activity. It takes a lot. It's exhausting. You can get plumb tuckered out from the effort. But it's all in a good cause, a noble cause: the destruction of an Infidel nation-state on what must be as it was once, part of Dar al-Islam. That takes priority. That matters the most.

boneshack:

I have the source. This is the URL followed by the article. It is a UN web page:

http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=27474&Cr=Palestine&Cr1=

Over half of Gaza’s households living below poverty line, UN says

24 July 2008 – Household poverty is worsening in Gaza, with over half of all households in the area living below the poverty line, according to a new report released today by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
In spite of “significant amounts of emergency and humanitarian assistance,” last year the number of households in Gaza below the consumption poverty line surged to an all-time high 51.8 per cent, the publication – based on figures from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics – noted.

UNRWA also sounded the alarm that the unemployment rate in the occupied Palestinian territory is one of the highest in the world, standing at nearly 30 per cent.

Unemployment reached a record 45.3 per cent in Gaza between July and December 2007. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate in the West Bank was 25 per cent, double the average rate in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Youth were hardest hit by surging unemployment, the study, entitled “Prolonged Crisis in the occupied Palestinian territory: Socio-Economic Developments in 2007,” said.

“If you deprive young people of an economic future, you deprive them of hope and when hope vanishes, what is left?” asked Christopher Gunness, UNRWA spokesperson. “How better to prevent despair and economic misery taking hold of a whole generation than to re-open Gaza’s borders?”

Data showed that in Gaza, new public sector jobs – partly fuelled by Hamas’ job creation initiatives – accounted for one quarter of job growth last year.

The report expressed concern over “the low level of investment spending in both the public and private sectors” in the medium- and long-run, cautioning that “Israeli imposed movement restrictions in the occupied Palestinian territory, whose population is estimated to have grown by about one third since 1999, have resulted in considerable regression over the past eight years and remain the main barrier to economic recovery and development.”

Its always easy to blame it on the other guy.

Stuff one can't make up

The idea that Gaza can do nothing but wait for Israel to give them jobs is ludicrous. For one thing, as other posters have noted, Gaza has rejected and destroyed Israeli offers such as the greenhouses, and the reason crossings are closed so frequently is due to Gazan violence against Israel.

None of Israel's immediate neighboring countries--all Muslim--would trade with her at her inception--even now, Israel's trade with Muslim countries is spotty and insecure.

So Israel built not only a strong domestic economy, but trade with the U.S., Europe, Australia and other nations. When other Middle Eastern nations would not allow Israel into regional sporting leagues, she joined European leagues instead.

Gaza has 25 miles of open coastline and a border with Egypt, as well as Israel. They can trade with fellow Muslim countries, as well as internationally in general. If they really wanted to create jobs, all they would have to do to create investment is to dial back the violence a few notches--both against Israel and their fellow Palestinians.

Why isn't Gaza a functioning sovereign state? Israel pulled out completely three years ago. They have a "democratically elected" government--the genocidal Hamas--and have even ousted their cheif rivals--the only-slightly-less murderous Fatah. So why aren't they creating a future for their people? You know--education, jobs, and some of that vaunted fixing of potholes?

The irony is, that so many people around the world are so keen on helping the "poor Palestinians" that it would take very little effort on their part to receive a flood of investment and even more aid. But this isn't what the Gazans want--they want the destruction of Israel, even though it is their biggest benefactor. Most Gazans are not thinking much beyond this.

You know what their leader will tell you? "Economy is in the hands of Allah. We can't change his will."

I Am Me,

Thank you for your response. However, it does not fit. I asked about the veracity of the UNRRA report, that specifically states that Israel is the cause of this unemployment problem.

The article cleary stated:

The report blamed Israel's closure of the Gaza crossings and restrictions of fuel as causes for the disastrous state of the economy.

Your link affirms poverty/unemployment in Gaza. Big deal. We all know this.

My problem is why Israel is the cause of their (Paleostinian) misery, as stated in the article above (from INN).

Something still stinks here. And I don't give a hoot how much you bring the Useless Nations into this discussion.

Why work when allah has ordained all that jiza from hapless infidel jews next door? "O allah, make them bootie for us!"

These are the kind of people who put more attention into killing others than attention to improving their own material lot. These are the kind of people who would rather destroy your nice house rather than work to build a nice house for themself. Palestinians were trending positive and were rapidly becoming the most wealthy arabs in the region (with the exception of the wealthy ones who by accident live over pools of oil). The intifada or the murders the paleos committed upon israelis made it impossible for the israelis to mix with them.

Additionally, and the stupid un dominated by the islamic theive, fail to understand that poverty is caused by islamic civilization, itself. It prohibits interest and effectively prohibits capitalism dooming its followers to pertual poverty and scavenging from infidels who are in perpetual danger.

Somehow, this unemployment is not pulling at my heartstrings, I can't explain, maybe cause they're (not even) getting what they deserve?

The UN isn't counting those jobs in the "underground economy": ball-bearing stuffer, rat-poison mixer, bomb-belt stitcher, small-arms transporter, shahid-final-statement video recorder...

"The report expressed concern over “the low level of investment spending in both the public and private sectors” ... yada-yada...
==========================================

Same argument we hear from black activists: "You guys aren't doing your civic duty by investing in inner-city businesses: we NEED convenience stores, bank branches, etc." (The problem isn't racism; it's the number of banks that are robbed, of ATM machines destroyed, the number of times that mom-and-pop stores are vandalized. Without some likelihood of a profit, who wants to invest?)

Western-style commerce requires some minimum amount of law and order and reciprocity. I keep going back to a post by Bill Whittle (the "screw-the-other-guy" mindset), see
http://www.ejectejecteject.com/archives/2007_05.html
and also a post by blogger Orangeducks regarding the Western concept of "agreement" which is sadly lacking in the Middle East, see also
http://antiprotester.blogspot.com/2006/04/life-in-iraq-part-ii-civilization-of.html

It is Israel's fault. If Israel wasn't there there would be nowhere to shoot the rockets, and no millions of dollars in aid flowing in to stop those rockets and then they would have to work. The Gazan "refugees" look a lot fatter than the Darfur refugees. They don't want to work.

Disbanded in 1949. So the question remains: who's being duplicitous here? You can find plenty of similar stories at the UNRWA web site, but there's not text there coming close to the INN's story.

It would appear that there was a typo in the original article ,UNRRA report should have read UNRWA report.

The site:

http://www.un.org/unrwa/news/releases/PressReleases.html

A summary of the Report:

http://www.un.org/unrwa/news/releases/pr-2008/jer_24jul08.pdf

Full report (if you really have time to waste) is also on the site.

This is typical of the arab/islamic mindset.
"IT IS ALWAYS SOME ONE ELSES FAULT"

The arab/moslems invented everything, modern science, numbers, zero, they are smarter than all of us.
However despite their claims they are a bit short on results. The worst thing is the liberal media buys this and repeats it.
Just the other day I was watching the news on that pathetic EURO TV channel, they were reporting the bombings in India. At the end of the report the journalist added words to the effect "moslems are a margenalised, discrimminated against and poor minority" as if that explained the bombings.

They have this pathetic victim mentality (except when they are killing helpless black africans)

boneshack:

My apologies. I misunderstood what you wrote (I did a lot of that yesterday). I thought you were doubting the story itself (not why) because you could not find the source.

Seems like life in hamastan is not the islamic paradise they thought it would be.

Sneaky bunch, those Israelis. When they left, they took all the jobs with them.

Gaza is the result of garbage in, garbage out. Those most worthless of the world's people are getting exactly what they deserve and they have only themselves to blame, regardless of what the UN says.

The unemployment rate in Judea and Samaria was estimated at 25 percent.

It was Lord Harris of Highcross who said, that you will have unemployment as long as you pay people to be unemployed.

And as the recipients of the largest of the largesse of the western world, we can see this elegant aphorism being ably demonstrated in Gaza.
