The strike was too unilateral, says Pakistani army, and "could be detrimental to bilateral relations." "U.S. air strike on al-Qaeda hideout lays bare Pakistan's border," by Saeed Shah and Graeme Smith, for the Globe and Mail, July 29:
ISLAMABAD AND KABUL — U.S. forces struck a suspected al-Qaeda hideout inside Pakistan Monday, exposing growing tensions between the allies over Pakistan's inability to deal with militants in its tribal regions. The attack, believed to have killed a top al-Qaeda chemical and biological weapons expert, came as Pakistan's Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani arrived in Washington in an effort to reassure Americans of his country's efforts to eradicate the militants based in Pakistan, who are believed to be feeding the rising insurgency in Afghanistan.
While U.S. President George W. Bush praised Pakistan as a "strong ally and a vibrant democracy," yesterday's military strikes - the latest in a rash of such U.S. interventions - drew a quick rebuke from Pakistan's army, which warned they "could be detrimental to bilateral relations."
[...]At a joint White House press conference, Mr. Bush and Mr. Gilani were left mouthing sentiments incongruous with events on the ground and the behind-the-scenes concerns. The U.S. President said that the "U.S. respects the sovereignty" of Pakistan, while Mr. Gilani reaffirmed his country's commitment to the fight against terrorism: "This is our war. This is a war against Pakistan."
drew a quick rebuke from Pakistan's army, which warned they "could be detrimental to bilateral relations."
waaa the pakis dont like there true alies being harmed big deal
Mr. Gilani reaffirmed his country's commitment to the fight against terrorism: "This is our war. This is a war against Pakistan."
So what are you waiting for? This is your war? FIGHT IT!
Whenever muslims protest - that means we are on the right track. They protest loudly over Mr. Spencer which tells me that I am on the right track - listening and reading Mr. Spencer's information. I also apply this strategy to left wing idiots whenever they protest too loudly.
I just wish we would hold back ALL our hard earned tax money and STOP giving it to ALL muslim countries. It is just sickening that they get it and look at Pakistan - they want more millions all they do is get a #3 or below guy who was probably doing a lousy job and needed to be fired anyway, and hand them over to us.
Now, why would they protest over this event if they were truly on the side of getting rid of terrorists?! And as for any 'strategy' or whatever they call it - it is just junk words worthy to be ignored.
The strike was too unilateral
If it had been anything other than unliteral, the enemy would have been warned of the incoming warhead.
If you won't or can't do it we certainly will.
I agree, R_Not, no more money. No more tax dollars for them to help the jihadis do their evil.
Again the Pakistan whine about US strikes. They fear the US and India. Which is a good sign you keep them in check with these incursions into Pakistani territory and let them know who is boss. Show of US military strength will certainly have the Jihadis running with their tails underneath. US military power can not be matched and let the Pakistanis whine. We go in and strike where we need to, because the Pak-Army cannot do anything.
Pakistan has received more than $30 billion dollars in military and economic aid (and debt cancellation) from American taxpayers since late 2001.
What has been given in return? Not access to A. Q. Khan, who still remains protected from interrogation by Americans who would like to know, and have a right to know, all kinds of things that A. Q. Khan -- who a week ago indiscrettly let out that Pakistan's military intelligence, I.S.I., had been his willing collaborator. A. Q. Khan is, in Pakistan, a national hero, a likely winner of any "Most Admired Pakistani" contest.
Have the Taliban been driven out of Pakistan from their bases, or have they rather, been given refuge from American and other NATO troops, and given every assistance, by members of the Pakistani military and local officials, so that they have been able to cross and then re-cross, the Pakistani border with Afghanistan, whenever they feel like it? Have the Taliban grown stronger, or weaker, in their Pakistani redoubts?
What about Al Qaeda? Has Al Qaeda suffered greatly over the past seven years, the years of those $30 billion dollars in American aid alone, to Pakistan? Has Bin Laden, has Al-Zawahiri, been captured? Are there any examples of Pakistan's military inflicting great damage on Al Qaeda, its bases, its leaders, its low-level members? Is there in fact evidence that the Pakistani military cannot be trusted with intelligence information, because there are always those in that military who are sympathizers with Al Qaeda, and who quite naturally put loyalty to members of the Umma above any tepid and temporary loyalty, or merely collaboration, ineffective as it has been, with the American Infidels, whose money and military equipment the Pakistanis covet, and without which bribes they would not, not for one minute, even pretend -- as they now do -- to lift a finger against the Taliban or Al Qaeda.
Prime Minister Gilani of Pakistan recognises the need for leadership and teamwork. He stated yesterday the need for both, and here we are; not one day has passed since his speech and this teamwork has gone sideways.
Why do we do this, we need them to face rough and tough Taliban in the future, we cannot be there forever and when we leave, can we have confidence in the Pakistan army to do the business? They need more money not less!
Remember we don’t want the Taliban in Alabama or Montana, their stomach constitution is much stronger than ours and they must remain in Afghanistan, I don’t think we can win face to face over here, I shiver at the thought.

"Whenever muslims protest - that means we are on the right track" (R_not)
That is so true. The problem is that it is so politically incorrect to say anything about them. If anyone else complains about anything, no one cares, but if the little poor oppressed, enslaved islamist complain, look at everyone run.
Anyway, I can not believe that some decision makers in the US actually believe that Pakistanis will do anything what those same decision makers in the US want them to do... It just won't happen. It is all Pakistani game. They will play it, US will give money and support, they will be able to grow stronger and have their bomb for India or whoever else comes along, mainly India though.
It never seize to amaze me how the most educated people in the world can be so stupid when it comes to simple things like these.
Have a nice day.

"They [the Pakistanis] need more money not less!"
---from a posting above
Really? Does the Pakistani military need the $230 million upgrade to their fighter jets, for example, in order to fight the Taliban or Al Qaeda? Or in order to fight India? And on what has the ten billion in military aid given since late 2001 been spent -- on weaponry appropriate to fighting against members of Al Qaeda and the Taliban in northwestern Pakistan, or in the cities of Pakistan, or is it weaponry much more appropriate for other kinds of war-making against other, Infidel, enemies?
And why has the government of Pakistan not been asked, if it is to continue to receive American aid, to turn over the nuclear weapons to the United States, for "safekeeping"? Are we not allies? Are we not friends? Why should Pakistan, having received so much, having in fact been kept afloat entirely by Western aid and Western trade (and it is the Arabs, with their oil wealth, who give Pakistan nothing, but demand more and more for that oil, even from the countries, such as Pakistan, full of poor Muslims) not relieve American worries about "mis-use" of that "Islamic bomb"?
Threats to NYC.

Nailed 'em!
Maybe now Pakistan will be a bit more aggressive in dealing with the scum.
I imagine that this "unilateral attack" is an encouragement to those within Pakistan that need encouragement, and a discouragement to the jihadis. While I understand the desire of the Paki bigwigs to need "stability", that stability translates into Islamic status quo, which means not really shaking things up. An undisturbed Islamo-jihadist nest means less chance of stings today, but more nests up the road.
Disturb em. Just give the US military enough wasp spray.
I saw this photo-op in which Gilani pronounces the curious untethered words: "This is our fight. This is a war against Pakistan".
The press account above asserts "Mr. Gikani reaffirmed his country's commitment to fight against terrorism".
He did no such thing. Gilani's words are shockingly ambiguous. In speaking of "a war against Pakistan", is Gilani speaking of Islamic terrorism and Jihad, or the war against those things? If brains are still functioning, still connected to nervous systems in our government, an eyebrow or two were raised at this careful and provocative phrasing.
...."Remember we don’t want the Taliban in Alabama or Montana, their stomach constitution is much stronger than ours .... I don’t think we can win face to face over here, I shiver at the thought"....
You have never met a true native of either Alabama or Montana, or Pennsylvania, or Iowa, or any of the other states where people "cling to their guns and religion". Those who will dare engage us on our native soil will be destroyed here, and then see their own homelands laid to waste.

We need to be arming India
This is an odd turn of phrase:
"Remember we don’t want the Taliban in Alabama or Montana, their stomach constitution is much stronger than ours and they must remain in Afghanistan"
Pretty sure I have never heard a native English speaker (of the Western Variety) use "stomach constitution" before.
BTW: I would love to see the Taliban try to infiltrate Montana or Alabama.

"strong ally and a vibrant democracy"
Does anyone still take this man seriously?
Pakistan is the archetypal imagined community, the offspring of precipitate partition; its frontiers are porous, its polyglot population exceptionally diverse. Its chief claim to unity is Islam, on which its rulers have relied and this has contributed to three wars and nuclear confrontation.
Did the British deliberately inspire Hindu-Islamic enmity to divide and rule? Was partition inescapable? The jury remains out on these questions.
The name "Pakistan," in the consensual version, was coined by a thirty-five year-old Punjabi Muslim, Choudhary Rahmat Ali, who said he spoke for three other Muslims at Cambridge University.
In 1933, Ali published a pamphlet titled Now or Never "on behalf of the thirty million Muslims" living in the five northern units of India. Subsequently Ali offered this explanation for his invented acronym: "Pakistan is both a Persian and an Urdu word, composed of letters taken from the names of our homelands: that is, Punjab, Afghania (N.W. Frontier Province), Kashmir, Iran, Sindh, Tukharistan, and Baluchistan. It means the land of the Paks, the spiritually pure and clean."
It remains however that they were very unfairly treated by us and more than power and influence it is our continuing question of guilt over generations that keeps us giving them money.
So how much money is enough? Are we still expecting rewards in return even today… and if so what rewards are we hoping to get?
The only reward that I want is to keep these rough and tough types out of my town and I am willing for our administration to give them what the Pakistani administration desperately need to keep us safe.
Fred

hindenberg, this doesn't spell Pakistan, but Pakistab.
The last "N" probably stands for something else, New York or something.
So if we don't give aid to the Pakistani government, militants from the tribal regions will suddenly start showing up and raising havoc in Alabama and Montana? I'm not quite sure how to categorize that logical fallacy. Does that even qualify as an inductive leap?
Naseem? Is that you?
..."they were very unfairly treated by us and ... it is our continuing question of guilt"...
Maybe I'm missing something here. Who is "us", and what are "we" guilty of? And do you really think I care?
..."rough and tough types"...
You are just trying to make us laugh. Who talks like this?
I don't care where the name pakistan came from, how it was created, who lives there or what they do. Stop sending money into any and every islamic nation, let the muslims take care of their own. I'm sure you can see how well that has worked for them in the past.
And quit refering to "we", "us" and "our" administration, you are not my spokesman, and I doubt you are even a citizen of the U.S.

Check your local mosque or madrassa, they're already here, these guys are just a little quieter than the ones in pakiland, but the same mentality controls their thinking. . . kill the infidels.
I am willing for our administration to give them what the Pakistani administration desperately need The 20 billion or so we've already given them isn't enough? If Patton (or even Patraeus) had control of that much money they could conquer Canada and Mexico and have change.
A mostly unnoticed accomplishment of the Bush Administration has been our improved relations with India. Relations between the two countries right now are better than at any time since the inception of India back in 1947. After all, the largest Hindu nation and the largest Christian nation (I believe America counts as such) will need to make common cause again and again as we move into an uncertain future because of "the Islamic problem."
...."Remember we don’t want the Taliban in Alabama or Montana, their stomach constitution is much stronger than ours .... I don’t think we can win face to face over here, I shiver at the thought"....
Do you really believe that? Don't confuse the San Francisco city council with the citizens of the United States. A home field get-together with the locals of "flyover" country, unencumbered by the nuanced rules of engagement that often force our military to operate within the constraints of a debate club, is just what the doctor ordered for those talibanani in a hurry to see Allah.
Given our current immigration "policy", we may unfortunate enough to see this demonstrated.
Someone in the our military got it right. By going ahead and bombing the talaban in Pakistan and then saying, "oops" is the way to do it. This way the paks blame us and we tell the paks that they are helping in the war against the Talaban. Thus the official channels of diplomacy say one thing and our military says another. Sounds familiar?
The muslims will have to figure out who is lying.

Arming India is the last thing we should do.
India is not on our side. As a founding member of the NAM, it is afraid of appearing pro-Western and so keeps itself out of the war on terrorism.
India has said in many ways that it doesn't need the West. Take them at their word. Let them fight their own battles, with their own money and their own people.
Way to go. One less jihadi.
Good day for the US and the non Muslim world.
Bravo Zulu to whoever was riding that joystick. One less. A blow for our freedom from Jihad.

In return, these leaders promise to sincerely consider whether they want to provoke al-Quaeda, the Taliban, and the many jihadi sympathizers who have thoroughly infiltrated their security forces, in order to placate a lame-duck American President eager to call them 'allies in the War on Terror'. "

Feeling's mutual. *You* don't want kafir in Pakistan - well, just say an awful lot of us here would be very, very happy not to see even *one* Pakistani Muslim OUTSIDE Pakistan, in *our* countries.
Here's the deal that many of us who post at this site would just love to see happening.
1. ALL foreign non-Muslims leave Pakistan immediately, taking everything with them - *including* all military hardware paid for by the West. All Western diplomats leave. ALL western 'aid' aka jizya stops as of yesterday. All non-Muslim 'Pakistanis' (Christians, Hindus, apostates) leave Pakistan for other places - where, unlike what happens in Pakistan, they will not be mercilessly persecuted, or lied about, or falsely accused of 'blasphemy' and then killed, or their daughters kidnapped and raped and 'married' to Muslims and 'converted' to Islam, or their sons murdered on suspicion of making eyes at Muslim girls, or their crops stolen by Muslims in broad daylight, etc etc etc.
At the same time:
2. ALL Pakistani Muslim visitors, residents or immigrants (and *all* Muslim descendants of Pakistani Muslim immigrants) currently inhabiting the non-Muslim world, beginning with the diplomats and proceeding down to every last Pakistani Muslim running a curry shop in the UK or a gas station in the USA, LEAVE and return to Pakistan. Those who have acquired citizenship in western countries, are stripped of it, before leaving.
Complete separation. No non-Muslims in Pakistan - fine. BUT..NO Pakistani Muslims (or their Muslim descendants) in the non-Muslim world, either.
hey FUnPAkrocks ca you call all your brothers home to the PAK? l think it must be a huge cesspoolstan and they dont want to go back home. why does the pak remain a cesspoolstan? mmm could it be islam???? till l see a whole bunch of paks going back to the homeland you word is worthless you piece of puke.

Fine with the majority of US. Oh yeah, we'll be taking our $$$ with us. No more...aid.
@hindenberg AKA Fred
I have a question. Are you a native American or are you from a Muslim country? There is no Muslim nation that will fight another for infidels. Do I need to repeat this to make it more true.
If yes or refusal to answer tells me we have a stealth jihads among us. Practicing 'taqiyya'.
This reminds me of the old war movies. A solder hears a noise. Asks a baseball related question to determine friend or foe.
I did feel a sense of satisfaction when I heard the news of the death of this odious individual.
Alas,I don't feel the death of this sad lunatic will be a big dent on the Al Qaeda gang.
I was pleased with the method of his death - well done guys and keep it coming.
Of course, there's the rub, a CIA drone missile attack on Pakistani territory.
That's outrageous you hear them scream. The claims of 3 children killed was immediate, although falling on deaf ears in alot of the world now, due to videos proudly released by these awful people showing their children undergoing weapons training and beheading people.
We of course have the female suicide bombers too - so the predictable innocent women and children killed claims have lost any integrity.
If Khabab was that important to them I'm sure they would be claiming a few wedding parties had been killed.
Pakistan has been a hotbed, or the hotbed for years, for the brainwashing and training of islamic terrorists and the planning and execution of islamic terrorist attacks which have resulted in the murder of innocent civilian people all over the world.
It is a festering ulcer of hate in the region and populated with thousands of the most heinous fanatical criminals and murderers on this earth.
Indeed it is a Mecca for islamic killers.
So why do we see them as an ally?
We know (to me it is obvious)that the Pakistani government have been supporting and exporting islamic terrorism for years.
Surely our leaders and our best military and political brains can see this too?
Why the enigma?
Am I missing something here?
Am I missing something here?...
Yes Ken Clean Air System. The nabi feels that you are missing the key point that our troops in Afghanistan can only be supplied through Pakistan. So we must stay on their good side.

I am of German (and Turkish) descent. My father was a business man so I have spent a lot of time in Germany, Turkey and America.
I love America, and am currently applying for US citizenship.
I don't want the Taliban in America, if they get here, it means that we have lost the war in Afghanistan and they have managed to bring it to us....if we lose over there ....do you think we can win it in Alabama...impossible!
This is why it is important to fund Pakistan and let them take the heat....and we have to pay for that heat...better them than us (as soon as I get the citizenship).
Albert, I know you are upset; the thought of the Taliban in Alabama...ugh!, it's like a rash you want to scratch all night....it's what they think about us too while over there.
I'd be up for paying more tax to fund Pakistan, what about you?
Is Gilani lifting his retread speeches from another plagiarizer, Barrie Obamerama ?

How about: 'it is our time', or, 'we are the people we have been waiting for'?

Request denied, application rejected. You don't belong in this country. Try Germany, try Turkey, maybe you'd like pakistan.
...."do you think we can win it in Alabama...impossible!"....

..."I'd be up for paying more tax to fund Pakistan, what about you?"...
Without getting into a discussion about taxes, and the reasons my tax dollars should never be used to fund backwater hell holes like pakistan, I would agree to pay a few dollars extra, or better, re-direct the dollars currently wasted on building infrastructure and hospitals and feeding the garbage that will only grow to hate the hand that feeds them, to build more Predators and missile armed drones, and train american soldiers to guide them into every wedding party and funeral they can find in pakistan, afghanistan and iran and iraq, and every "factory" or "security headquarters" in gaza, followed by every mosque and minarette, followed by every single thing that moves in or around the rubble left behind.

Yep, I think 'Naseem' is back.
We must never think of Pakistan as our ally. Does anyone actually believe that the Pakistanis would side with the mother of all infidel nations, the US against their fellow muslims, fellow jihadists, against the will of allah?
Wake up and smell the jihad and it is coming from Pakistan. The support that we are giving to Pakistan is hurting our American solders in Afghanistan. The reason the war in Iraq and Afghanistan has cost Americans so much is because we are supporting both sides, yes both sides directly and indirectly. We are supporting our solders and we are supporting our enemies indirectly - it is US vs. US and it is a stalemate.
We must support India and only India.
I don't want the Taliban in America, if they get here, it means that we have lost the war in Afghanistan and they have managed to bring it to us....if we lose over there ....do you think we can win it in Alabama...impossible!

I detect an attitude problem with your approach; you want Pakistan to "take the heat" from the Talibaneezers instead of applying it to them.
I'd be up for paying more tax to fund Pakistan, what about you?
Nope. Fund them to do what? Work with the Taliban and lie to us about it? The less money flowing to that region of the world, the better.
