And he doesn't mean an interior spiritual struggle, either: Haneya has bought into the Islamophobic notion that jihad has something to do with warfare. Ibrahim Hooper, call your office! "Haneya: Jerusalem can only be "liberated" through Holy war, not talks," from Xinhua, August 21 (thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist):
GAZA, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Prime minister of the deposed Palestinian unity government Ismail Haneya said on Thursday that liberating Jerusalem and the holy al-Aqsa Mosque can only be achieved through Jihad (Holy War), instead of "absurd peace talks."Haneya made the statement at a rally held in Gaza City to mark the 39-year-anniversary of burning al-Aqsa mosque by a Zionist extremist, Muslims' holy shrine in east Jerusalem.
Interesting anniversary to mark. Keeping hate alive.
Israeli and Palestinian negotiators are holding talks on six basic permanent status issues, Jerusalem being one of them. Haneya described these talks and ongoing meetings as "absurd.""The Liberation of Jerusalem and al-Aqsa Mosque can be achieved only through Jihad, blood, resistance and martyrdom and not through absurd peace talks," Haneya told the rally....
"The Liberation of Jerusalem and al-Aqsa Mosque can be achieved only through Jihad, blood, resistance and martyrdom and not through absurd peace talks," Haneya told the rally...."
The blood always flows where the Muhammadan goes!
Blood flows where Islam Goes and nobody knows.... but me.
Such shining forthrightness should not be allowed to obscure the obverse of the medal: Hamas stands for Fast Jihad, but Fatah stands for Slow Jihad. They differ only on matters of tactics and timing. The terminally ill Olmert regime, like a patient suffering Alzheimer's who is persuaded on his deathbed to sign a document leaving everything to a distant and indifferent and least worthy relative, is determined, it appears, to sign away to Mahmoud Abbas what it has no right to do, for the Olmert regime lacks legitimacy. And it not only has no right to do so, it also exhibits no sense in attempting to do so, for it has failed to recognize the new understanding dawning among Infidels, an understanding not brought about by any great improvement in Israel's efforts at explaining itself, nor any great improvement in the largely atrocious and biased coverage of Israel's attempts to defend itself, but rather from the behavior of Muslims toward Infidels around the world. Each bomb attack on a bus in London, each slitting of the throats of Christian schoolgirls in Indonesia, each murder or threat of murder in Amsterdam or Denmark, each example of Muslim outrage, which in turn forces people, nolens-volens, to realize how absurd is the presentation of Islam as merely a "religion," and to listen more keenly to the articulate defectors from Islam, such as Wafa Sultan and Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Ali Sina and Ibn Warraq, and to those who, having grown up within the Muslim world as non-Muslims, have also managed to survive, get to the West, and to testify -- all of this, and even the greater heed paid to the texts (and thus the tenets) of Islam, have changed the situation for Israel, and will continue to do so. For much more of the outside world is willing to listen, and beginning to comprehend, that what the Arabs have done since the Six-Day War, that is to so carefully create out of the Gazan Arabs and the "West Bank" Arabs a totally fictitious "Palestinian people" (with lots of clever backdating), in order to misrepresent, through repackaging as a "war for the legitimate rights of the 'Palestinian' people" and to keep using phrases that juridically are simply false, such as that deadly word "occupied" (Israel, as the intended beneficiary of, and sole successor state to, the Mandate for Palestine, has a prior and convincing claim, should it choose to exercise it, to both Gaza and what the Jordanians renamed as "the West Bank," in addition to its claim to territory taken in a war of self-defense. It is absurd -- but so many things about the coverage of the Arab Muslim war on Israel are absurd -- to keep talking about part of the territory allocated by the League of Nations, in its attempt to do justice, after the breakdown of the Ottoman Empire, to others among the many peoples of the Middle East, not just to the dominant and dominating Arabs, as "occupied" by Israel. It would be far more accurate to describe those portions of Judea and Samaria (as they have been known since before the time of Jesus, who had no trouble with those toponyms either) that comprise the soi-disant "West Bank" as "Arab-occuped parts of Judea and Samaria." How strange it sounds. But get it repeated ten thousand times, and it will not sound strange at all.
Those Muslim acts of aggression against non-Muslims, acts of aggression of every kind -- for are not Muslim demands for changes in the very institutions, legal and political and social, of the Infidel nation-states that have so generously and heedlessly allowed Muslims to settle deep within, not acts of aggression of the most disturbing and threatening kind? -- serve to push more and more Infidels into a state of receptivity to the truth, and in the case of Israel the truth is this: a Jihad is and has always been waged against it, and there is no "solution" to this Jihad based on further Israeli surrenders of tangible assets, and of Jewish claims (that Israeli governments have muted, or refused to articulate at all) based on appeals to law, history, and a sense of distributive justice or fairness (the Arabs have 22 states, with 14 million square miles of land, and untold natural resources and riches as a result; Israel is less than 1/1,000th the size).
But the Olmert government consists of stolid, unimaginative, Yesterday's Men. They do not sense what is in the air. They have no idea how to capitalize upon it. They should go, quickly, and any piece of paper that that government is tempted to sign with the Slow Jihaidsts of Fatah should be snatched from their grasp, whatever it takes.
And the long-suffering Israeli public shoudl demand a government not of recycled politicians who still cannot grasp the central relevance of Islam, much less discuss it either openly, or even with Western leaders in camera, to explain why the whole farce of peace-processing and negotiations and treaties made-to-be-breached by the Muslim side, following the example of Muhammad with the Meccans at Hudaibiyya, is over, and the age of Deterrence, of forcing the Arabs not to attack by invoking the doctrine of Necessity, or Darura, is the only way to keep the peace, and from here on out, that is the way it is going to be.
The only liberation Jerusalem has known was by Israeli/Jewish forces and by the Crusaders. Otherwise it has only know genocidal occupation. There can never be true liberation by any islamic group.
This should point out to "Western" governments that there is no point in Israel negotiating withe the paleostinians. No matter what the agreement, there will always be a "rogue" group that will keep fighting. And the "legitimate" pali government won't take any steps to stop it.
War is the only solution to the Israel/paleostinian "issue". And the sooner they figure that out, the sooner they can get it finished (assuming they tell the U.N. to STFU and fight to win.)
Another fine post, Hugh. Reading it made me wonder what the West would be like if 90% of politicians, academics and media types thought as you did. Well, it would be a far different, far more knowledgeable, far more prepared and far better West.
I would only add what I've mentioned before and that is that Israel's greatest mistake is that it has been too kind. From 1948 onwards, the Jews should have announced very publicly two things: 1) they wish to live in peace with their Arab neighbors and are content with the amount of land alloted them by the UN partition plan of 1947; 2) if the Arabs won't let the Jews have their own small (very) homeland and make war on them, then everytime the Jews prevail in war against the Arabs they will annex land and expel Arab populations. In effect, the Jews did the first thing but not the second (minus the filling out of borders after the first war). Who could argue that if this had been done the Jews would be worse off or more hated by Muslims? Aren't they about as hated as as people can be and wouldn't a Greater Israel, which included the West Bank, Gaza, the Sinai and the Golan Heights as parts of Israel proper, be an easier area to defend and also stronger? I certainly think so.
....and not through absurd peace talks," Haneya told the rally....
Now if Israel and the West will just agree on this one point...that all the peace talks in the world with Islamists will do no good, then that would be real progress. People cannot continue to delude themselves about things that cannot work.
And the long-suffering Israeli public shoudl demand a government not of recycled politicians who still cannot grasp the central relevance of Islam, much less discuss it either openly, or even with Western leaders in camera, to explain why the whole farce of peace-processing and negotiations and treaties made-to-be-breached by the Muslim side, following the example of Muhammad with the Meccans at Hudaibiyya, is over, and the age of Deterrence, of forcing the Arabs not to attack by invoking the doctrine of Necessity, or Darura, is the only way to keep the peace, and from here on out, that is the way it is going to be.

good point. why aren't the israeli's reminding us of the truth of koran? if they did, would it be played on the evening news?
I like the Hamas.
They tell you straight away what they want - no euphemisms or "pretty face"
I think we should put Heniya on one of the two boats coming to "free" Gaza from its "siege" so he can tell the world press of his intentions...
Olmert is more dangerous to Israel than any hammas/fattah terrorist, he is a traitor and should be jailed. The Israeli gov't needs to come together to disband his party, and let the a true leader take over their gov't.
For all Australians new to this site. If you have not been to Israel - and I have not, either - it is TINY. Leaving out Judea, Samaria and Gaza, it is exactly the same size as...Wales. *Denmark* and the Netherlands - and we think of both of those countries as 'small' - are almost twice the size of Israel.
At one level, you can see that by any cursory glance at a map of the world.
But let's have a couple of Australian comparisons.
If you live in New South Wales: the whole of Israel, from the Negev to Haifa, could be comfortably fitted in between Sydney and Wollongong and would not extend west of the Divide. That's what my parish priest said - he had been there.
If you live in Queensland: the whole of Israel, from the Negev to Haifa, could be fitted in between Grafton and Maryborough, and would not extend further west than the line of the Dividing Range watershed.
Then reflect that the parts that the Arab Muslims are claiming so vociferously - the Golan, the hills of Judea and Samaria, and Gaza - comprise what has always been the military high ground. Isn't *that* interesting?
Furthermore, to use Australian terminology: Judea, including Jerusalem, and Samaria, contain Judaism's most Sacred Sites [i.e. the Temple Mount in Jerusalem] and most of its other sacred sites as well, such as Joseph's Tomb [at Shechem], Rachel's Tomb [Bethlehem], Bethlehem itself [birthplace of King David], Shiloh [where the Ark of the Covenant was kept for some time] and the Cave of Machpelah, where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Leah and Jacob are buried. The ancient historic dreaming places in the Judean hills are ALL Hebrew, Jewish, belonging to the House of Israel.
By what right then do Arabs - let alone Arabised Muslims from as far away as Malaysia - *dare* to claim that these places - seized by deceit and violent conquest, maintained in Muslim possession by the cruellest of Occupations down the centuries, appropriated by anti-historical Big Lies - must be regarded forever as inalienable *Arab* property? Or that any Muslim-dominated Arab state set up upon those places, must be perfectly and purely Judenrein, even while they demand that Arabs should continue to live with full civil rights within the Jewish state of Israel.
By the same right by which Aboriginal Australians wear T-shirts proclaiming that Australia 'always was, always will be, Aboriginal land', Jews have EVERY right to say 'Jerusalem always was, always will be, Jewish land!'. Jews have Native Title in eretz Israel; they are the Traditional Owners of Traditional Hebrew/ Jewish Land, with responsibility to maintain its Sacred Sites.
And since the Arab Muslims will *never* allow non-Muslims to have civil or legal equality with themselves in any Muslim-controlled state, then if that indigenous Middle Eastern ethno-linguistic people-group, the Jews, want to a. live in and from their little bit of traditional land and freely and safely visit and maintain their Sacred Sites and practise their culture (and why should they not want to do so?) and b. enjoy full human rights while so doing, then their only option is - and always was - rebellion against the Empire of Islam that is the Empire of the Arabs, and complete independence as a sovereign state.
