Around 5.30 am, the terrorists, who had sneaked into India from across the border near Kanachak sector in Akhnoor, about 20km from Jammu, on Tuesday, riding a goods carrier fired at an army checkpost in the Domana-Mishriwala area. Junior commissioned officer V V Prakashan of 6 Madras was hit. He later succumbed to his injuries.
The infiltrators then hijacked a three-wheeler, fired indiscriminately killing the auto driver, local milkman Shabir Hussain, a motorcyclist Nasib Singh and an armyman Vijay Kumar, posted in Jaipur, who had come home on leave. Some locals traveling on motorbikes and a policeman were also fired at and injured.
The terrorists took shelter in the house of Billu Ram. His entire family — wife Sunita Devi, 35, Sheetal 9, Arishal 7, Kajal 4, Vipan 3 — was trapped alongwith with the terrorists. A visitor, Ashok Kumar (27), was also with them. Billu Ram was not at his home because he was being treated for a snake bite in hospital.
IGP (Jammu Zone) K Rajendra said that the terrorists were suspected to be the same infiltrators who had cut through the concertina wires on the border. They had taken advantage of the cover fire provided by Pakistani troops. "A high alert has been sounded in Jammu due to the terrorist infiltration from across the border," he said.
Once the hostages are rescued, there will be a "final onslaught", said an army officer, which in military terms means blowing up the building with rocket launchers or explosives. "This (civilian hostages) is what is holding us up from launching final onslaught. We are ready for that," he said....

How much loyalty can the Indian Army expect from it’s Muslim soldiers?
I am aware that the number of soldiers they have who are Sikhs is disproportionatly high but how many are Muslims?
Some time ago an Asian guy I knew told me that the Army Officer in charge of the operations in Kashmir was a Muslim.
Is that true? How much loyalty do theses fellows extend to India?

This act of taking children as young as 2 years old as hostages shows the respect these Jihadis have for human lives. The whole world needs to condemn such acts and should get together to fight them where ever they are. Smoke them out and make the world a safer place

Muslims in Indian army ( IA) are only 3% compared to ~18% population.
IA is a secular institution and it's members have to go through rigourous routines which instill nationalist pride in the country. There are no separate muslim armies, they are very much diluted and can not form groups and foment disturbances. As such they are not a serious threat ( wrt treason ). Treason and things like that are taken far more seriously in the East than in the West. I do not recall anything like this happening in the last 5 yrs unlike what happened to American muslim soldiers in Iraq.
The officer in charge of Kashmir may be Muslim I don't know but of the top 15 leadership only 1 is muslim.
Also you must remember that many of the muslims of India are Shias and Barelvis which have their own pet grievances against Pakistan.

That's not for the army, it is for the CRPF and suchlike but yes it is worrisome.
