"Too Sexy"
The most revealing aspect of the following (otherwise humorous) anecdote is that it is Malaysia's youth who are increasingly becoming Islam's morality police, contrary to the somewhat ingrained Western notion that youth everywhere just wanna have fun. It's not for nothing that characters like OBL have come to rely on the youth to lead the next generation of global jihadists. KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia on Tuesday canceled a concert by Canadian rock singer Avril Lavigne, saying it may taint the Muslim-majority country's independence day celebrations after the Islamic opposition slammed her show as being "too sexy."The Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry said it had decided not to permit Lavigne's show because it was unsuitable to Malaysian culture and could not be held on Aug. 29, two days ahead of independence day.
"It is not timely. It's not in the good spirit of our National Day. If we go ahead with the concert, it is contrary to what we are preparing for," said Shukran Ibrahim, a senior official from the culture ministry's department that vets all foreign artists.
The decision came after the youth wing of a fundamentalist opposition party, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, called for the show's cancellation.[...]
Malaysia requires all performers to wear clothes without obscene or drug-related images and be covered from the chest to the knees. They must also refrain from jumping, shouting, hugging and kissing on stage.
Still, members of PAS and other conservative Muslims often protest against Western and even Malaysian music shows that they deem to be inappropriate.
I've never been to an Avril Lavigne show, nor have I baought any of her records, but I do respect her as a talented singer/songwriter. She has always struck me as one of the more modest performers on the pop/rock scene, hardly "too sexy"! If these luddites think Lavigne is sexy they are seriously uninformed about Western pop culture.

Why do these stars agree to even play there in the first place?
To my limited knowledge, there was a permit issued and lots of money spent on promotion. Also many free tickets were given especially on radio shows.
Malaysia is well known for their flip flop decisions. I suspect its more to a political call than anything else.
Most of the turnouts are malay/muslim kids and none of them interviewed before said it changed their lives becoming bad, doing drugs etc.
If someone were to behave badly, do drugs and etc, they have already done it a long time ago and was their ambition for a very long time. These concerts were just a catalyst for shallow minded people to invent & connect the dots.
May I also remind that a very important by-election would be around the corner and everyone is jumping up the bandwagon of being caring by using islam.

I must admit to being mystified by the "jumping" thing. How far does this prohibition go? Are there Muslims all over Malaysia shifting from foot to foot, locked helplessly in place by mud puddles?

Aw come on. All the world is the same remember? Just a little fyi, that is what the Islamic fundamentalism is all about. No rock n roll, no bikinis on the beach, no alcohol, and no girls thinking they are the same as boys, etc.
I think we got over this at the beginning of the last century.

Yes, it was a political decision. No, it was not a particularly smart one. But, just as some terminally ill people exhibit the last flush or whatever it's called, our current government is trying to flex its muscles.
Besides, and I will deny this if asked, BitTorrent rocks! Far better than any concert if you ask me...
