Muslim separatist rebels raided two southern Philippine towns on Monday, burning houses and taking over local banks and businesses, prompting some residents to flee, officials said.Over 200 Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels entered the predominantly Christian town of Kolambugan in southern Lanao del Norte province before dawn, engaging troops and local police in intense gun battles, said town mayor Beltran Lumagi.
"They are now in the poblacion area (town centre), they have taken over the business centre, the rural banks, pawnshops," Mr Lumagi said on Manila radio station DZBB.
He said police and army forces were trying to hold the rebels at bay and fighting had been intense.
The mayor reported many residents had fled, and he was trying to confirm unverified reports some may have been held hostage.
He said he could see houses still burning.
"We need reinforcements," he said.
MILF rebels also entered two villages in the nearby town of Kauswagan, triggering heavy gunbattles with troops, police officer Misteryoso Arangco said.
The attacks came a day after MILF rebels ambushed a military convoy, killing four soldiers and three pro-government militiamen in Lanao del Sur province. Eight soldiers and three other militiamen were wounded in the attack....

Imagine such an invasion in a small town in the state of Montana in a sovereign country such as the US. No difference with the exception of the demographics, IE dense forests,and an island among hundreds that make up the Philippines. One problem here is that Kolambugan is a small coastal port town that sits along Mindanao's main coastal highway.and it is a entry/exit bay for shipping in the area from the Bohoi Sea. just over 3 miles Across this bay sits the larger port towns of Ozamis, and Calabayan,Phillipines. Usually the MILF has been more concentrated in Western Mindanao but this is more into central Mindanao.
Phillipine goverment is not going to do anything. It is time for the Phillipine citizens to take care of this problem.
And what is with the comment 'we need reinforcements'?????
Just last week they the Phillipine authorities were saying 'we have sufficient forces to keep the peace'.

"MILF's"?! WTF?! Do you know what that acronym means? Female homicide bombers are not exactly what one would refer to as "MILF" I have to wonder where Robert is spending his internet time to use that term!

Your kinda jumping the gun a bit there The Moro Islamic liberation Front (MILF) has been around for some 20 years and has contributed to deaths of thousands in the Phillipine, namely Western Mindanao. It appears that the Phillipine Government tried to give them their own autonomous region in the Phillipines but the Phillipine supreme court over ruled this decision and thus they are back to fighting again, no different than Hamas,or hezbollah--same old aggressive Islamic jihad behavior seen throughout the world.
MSM reports are saying that up to 27 hostage civilians have been murdered by the Muslim invaders of the predominantly Christian town of Kolambugan.
All the Muslim violence in southeast Asia and Western China is about the Bush foreign policy in the Middle East and the plight of the Palestinians, right?
