Last week one of Nigeria's top Islamic bodies, the Jamatu Nasril Islam, sentenced him to death.
The sentence was lifted but he was threatened with eviction from his home.
Earlier, Mr Abubakar had challenged Islamic scholars, saying there was no punishment stated in the Koran for having more than four wives.
"I have not contravened any established law that would warrant my being banished from the land... There is no law that says one must one must not marry more than four wives," the AFP news agency reported him as saying.
"All my wives are with children and some of these are people I have married and stayed with for over 30 years, how can they expect me to leave them within two days," he reportedly told local newspapers.
The former teacher and Islamic preacher lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children.
Niger is one of the Muslim majority states to have reintroduced Sharia punishments since 2000.Several people have been sentenced to death for adultery by Sharia courts but none of these sentences have been carried out.
And yet people complain about sharia, as if the punishments are always carried out. Go figure.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that this kind of "teaching" is going on here. See what happens when they start reading their religious texts. They become modern Mohammeds. "A student will be like his teacher" (LUKE 6:40).

What happens to the divorced women?
Under Sharia law, they are entitled only to a paltry sum for a very short period of time; three months or so, maybe less, I forget.
What happens to them after they're thrown in the street? Don't they have to be prisoners of war to become Islamic sex-slaves, and at least get fed that way?
Seems it's time to contact our Congressmen and let them know these this stuff is a real concern. I don't think a lot of our leader really believe this threat is REAL!!

Never a truer word said in jest. But forget the counselling and affirmation bit. I can think of harsher measures. If he is still alive, he has passed the point of no return morally.

That sounds painful - and I doubt that he can either text or e-mail those divorces.
But then again, sounds like every year, he had around 3 marriages for the last 30 years, so maybe this won't be that difficult.
