Olympics: hijab-clad sprinter beats infidels at their own games

376679.jpg

As an athlete, good for her. As a Muslima participating in a wholly infidel event that has absolutely no connection to Islam -- women racing and being awarded medals representative of mushrik Greece? -- well, the following Koranic verse comes to mind: "O you who believe! If you obey the infidels they will turn you back upon your heels, so you will turn back losers" (3:149). "Muslim sprinter wins Olympic sprint dressed head to toe in hijab," by Niall Firth, for Daily Mail, August 20:

Sprinters have long been squeezing their muscular frames into the most eye-wateringly skimpy, tight and revealing costumes imaginable.

But one female athlete at this year’s Olympics is bucking the trend for bulging lycra and naked torsos.

In 2004, Bahrain's Ruqaya Al Ghasara, a devout Muslim, was the first athlete to ever take part in an Olympics wearing a hijab.

Today, Al Ghasara won her heat of the women’s 200m sprint at the Bird's Nest stadium - despite being clothed head to foot.

After all, the Koran declares, "Are these [al-munafiqun, the "hypocrites"] they who swore by Allah with the most forcible of their oaths that they were most surely with you? Their deeds shall go for nothing, so they shall become losers. O you who believe! whoever from among you turns back from his religion, then Allah will bring a[nother] people, He shall love them and they shall love Him, lowly before the believers, mighty against the infidels, they shall strive hard in Allah's way and shall not fear the censure of any censurer." (5:53-54). In other words, those who reject Allah's way will lose; those who follow it -- such as al-Ghasara -- win (and Allah knows best).
Al Ghasara finished first followed by France's Muriel Hurtis-Houairi and Sri Lanka's Susanthika Jayasinghe.

Admittedly, Al Ghasara 's hijab is a rather sportier version of the traditional dress.

Clinging to her body as she powers down the track the hijab completely covers her head, arms and legs.

"And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty..." (Koran 24:31). But wait: as many ulema have commented, the ultimate reason for the hijab is to cover a woman's "form" so that, say, the shape of her legs do not appear and tempt men. So does Ruqaya's "hijab" -- "clinging to her body" and revealing those most muscular quadriceps -- count?
Known as a Hijood - or hijab combined with a sports hood - the costume was specially designed for Al Ghasara by an Australian sports clothing company.

It allows Muslim athletes to compete while still adhering to the strict modesty required of their faith.[...]

Though of course Muslims could argue that there's nothing modest about a Muslim woman participating in an infidel event, surrounded by infidels. But, as is common to the Islamic world, as long as she scored one over the infidels, the particulars of sharia may be overlooked -- by some:
In 2004 Al Ghasara defied objections from fundamentalists in her village to take part in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, running in the 100 metres.

And in 2006 she won the women’s 200m final at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, making her the first Bahraini-born athlete to win a major international athletics gold medal.

She's butt ugly, so I guess...

Looks more like a man to me.

Really, who care since she will have her ass handed to her by the infidel Jamaicans in the final.

Actually, running was one of the sports favored by the Muslim prophet Muhammad (the others were archery and swimming). The Muslim prophet Muhammad ran races with his wife Ayesha.

She didn't even make it into the finals. She only won her qualifying heat.

A fast slave is still a slave.

I watched this in a public lounge and many of the people started saying 'that is a man' 'runs like a man' 'hips of a man'.

A female doctor watching and sitting at the next table also said, 'there is no way that is a woman''that was not born a woman'.

I have not heard any other comments on this but the more I watch the more I wonder.

Yeah, I saw her run too-and couldn't stop laughing at this obvious case of hypocrisy. The absurdities of the Koran knows no end.

She looked like a Mummy!

How about sporting the Nike corporate logo on the headdress? This has got to have some forbidden, Muslim edict relating to doing this.

She's very brave and will be greeted by the most devout and holy of her kind when she returns.

Stoned to death by the end of the year.

Check this out: "Dynamic swimwear and sportswear for the Muslim female"--

My name is Aheda Zanetti, the woman behind the Ahiida label, migrated to Australia from Lebanon at age of 2. Now 38, married with 4 children. I remember growing up in Australia , posted a lot of challenges for a young Muslim / Arab girl. As an active person who liked to participate in community activities and sport, I found myself restricted due to cultural and religious beliefs. As years went by, I noticed there are younger girls and women that are embracing Islam and obeying their Islamic belief in dressing modestly, in turn, having to miss out on opportunities, and taking part in any sporting activities that Australia has to offer. By facing this on a daily basis and seeing girls struggle with what is around presently, we at Ahiida have found a need to make specialized sportswear to suit the Muslim female.

“Ahiida” represent the following qualities;

Freedom – The freedom to choose to participate in any sporting activity. By providing suitable specialized sports wear, for the active Muslim female, that will give her the freedom to choose in either starting or to continue in any sporting activities and keeping active.

Easy – even though EASY is such a small word but plays a big part in woman's wear. It has to be easy to put on and take off the garment without the complications of pins or ties etc or we will not be encouraged to wear it. Easy to wash and dry to suit the today's lifestyle.

Comfort – Comfort in design and most importantly in fabrics used to make this sportswear comfortable. Every aspect of Ahiida's new, unique designs has been thought threw so that the person wearing it will not think of it, meaning it should be light in weight, no restrictions in movement and very modest with the correct coverage.

Fabrics play a big part to the finished product. We have found that using high performance innovative fabric that have the flexibility, breath ability, moisture control and all the right ingredient that should work with the person's body temperature and skin not against it. In addition, using different techniques in the construction of the garment with the fabrics, will give the finished product extra modesty that will be greatly appreciated by the active female….

Confidence – The appearance of Muslim women in sport has always been a controversial topic that the world would like to know and talk about. When a Muslim woman is participating or competing at a national or international level, the first comments made about her concern Islam or the way she dresses.

All eyes are on the appearance of Muslim women in sports. Their appearance should be modest and at the same time it should reflect a professional sporty appearance with pride. By providing the appropriate clothing for the Muslim woman, who complies with religious, cultural and sports obligation, we are helping to bring out the best in Muslim woman, to prove that a Muslim woman is a role model to other women in the world, not an oppressed, no name, and no face being. With Ahiida sportswear, we can now compete with confidence.

Was she accompanied by a Muslim male relative while on the track?

Maybe this sport-hijab is really made from some hi-tech textile designed to lower drag and wind-resistance; rather like the swimsuits.

The oponent to her left seems astonished.

Perhaps the modest Muslima let out a victory ululation.

Icky.

Arab world rejoice!!!! You are the athletic superior of all!! Well at least Fran and Sri Lanka. Both sprinting titans in the track and field world. What an incredible upset. Now taking bets on whether or not she moves on from the next heat? Anyone? No? Yeah, that's what I think to.lol

Agree with johnb. Got to be a man. Genetic testing please.

BTW, Nike, that's the last pair of your shoes I'm buying. Hijood...puhleeze.

Quoted: "Actually, running was one of the sports favored by the Muslim prophet Muhammad (the others were archery and swimming). The Muslim prophet Muhammad ran races with his wife Ayesha."

Ayesha wasn't running races with Mo, she was trying to run away.

Pounding sand didn't make it into the top three, eh?

Well, if Mo didn't do it then, his followers can do it now. And for the rest of time.

I wanna see pictures of their Women's Beach Volleyball team!

"Sprinters have long been squeezing their muscular frames into the most eye-wateringly skimpy, tight and revealing costumes imaginable."

Methinks this prudish male journalist doth protest too much. Female Olympians are increasingly wearing what he calls "skimpy" running attire because that is what is most comfortable in the blistering summer heat which is fairly standard in most of the cities where the Summer Olympics are held, Beijing being no exception. Many women sweat as profusely as men do, which is the body's natural way of cooling itself, and if you sweat into fabric that doesn't absorb the moisture it's unbearable. After watching the women's marathon participants, most of whom had on this "skimpy" attire that left most of their torsos bare, I understood completely the practical purpose of such "exposure." These woman aren't interested in being eye candy; they are serious athletes. If it's too much for some fuddy-duddy male to handle, then don't look. I would also remind him that all the athletes at the original Olympic Games competed in the nude, with only a protective covering on their genitalia. Nobody took issue with it then.

As for the hijab-wearing sprinter, maybe she doesn't sweat as much as most women, or has somehow learned not to sweat. But don't call it modesty. She's no more modest than any of the other fine athletes competing in Beijing; if anything, she's less so by insisting on making a show of herself by standing out from the others this way. It's that way of thinking that infuriates me about most discussions of the hijab. If you wear that crap to be "modest", then does that make me immodest, i.e. a slut, because I don't cover my head, arms, legs, and I don't cover every inch of skin on my body? I don't dispute any woman's right to wear what she wants and thus be as uncomfortable as she wants, as long as it's her choice and hers alone. But don't insult my intelligence by telling me you do it for modesty.

And covering the face (how long now before we get athletes insisting on their right to wear THAT too?) is the antithesis of modesty; it's an act of cultural aggression. As a teacher I will never teach a woman with her face covered, I will not work with one, nor will a woman with her face covered ever be welcome in my home. That is my bottom line. If it makes me intolerant, then so be it; I am sick of being told to tolerate what is intolerable.

Agree with you. The "covered ones" need to stay in their OWN countries.

She does look like a man - wide shoulders, heavily muscled arms and legs, narrow hips, no boobs - but then a disturbing number of female athletes now look very much like men to me. If it isn't drugs, it's the training; it makes women lose nearly all their body fat and they stop menstruating, and selection now also favors those women and girls with the most naturally "mannish" figures. It's sad,as I'm just old enough to remember the days when the great women athletes of the 70s, who were inspiring role models for my generation, still looked like women, and women Olympians competed with each other and aspired to standards of excellence based on what was possible for women, not men. The new female Olympian seems to be painfully and unnaturally driven to be "just as good as the men", which goes against the whole principle of including women's events in the Olympics to begin with.

If it isn't drugs, it's the training

And sometimes, they actually are men.

This is a clever story planted by a bought and paid for media. The average reader glosses past it thinking she won the gold, when she only won a heat and didn't make it to the final. She probably is transgender; it is not uncommon to hear of this in the Olympics. Plus, it is a mote point because this getup will never survive in a fully sharia world.

johnb says,

Looks more like a man to me.

How do we know for sure? Does the Olympic Committee check the gender of "bashful" muslims?

I wouldn't be surprised if muslims are exempt from such "invasive" procedures.

Anyone notice the Nike "swash" on the head gear?

Nike "swoosh"

Yes, see 570130 above.

Hey, dude looks like a lady!

No more Nikes for this infidel!

People say I walk like a woman but I than a man. There is no just thing as than man walking styles or than woman walking styles. 75% of man do walk one way and 75% of woman walk than other way. She is than woman, there are woman with small breast thought history, and it her breast are small you are
not going to notice them at all when she is wearing her Islamist clothes.

Someone must let him know: "Defender of Islam" is not doing a bang-up job defending Islam. Or maybe no one should let him know. Can't decide.

Nah, just let him go on about breasts for awhile - he obviously needs an outlet for his sexual repression. Who knows, the catharsis might just help him think more rationally.

Huge you are than racist bigot againt musslin and Islam. You donot want musslim here which make you than racist bigot Musslim fought in our military in WWI and WWII. I dated many women before I convert to Islam. Some supid men want to have than breast tissue test at the game to test if you are either men or women want medical doctor pointed out that both sex have breast tissue so by that test all people in the game are female. To say a person is male or female by the way they walk isnot accurate.

Hey Huge - girly man can't even spell muslim!!!

And on another note, I suspect he's transgender due to his first remark that he walks like a girl but is really a man. Wow, this guy REALLY has some kinks in his turban!!!

I think we should start calling him Lola!!

"People say I walk like a women but I than a man."

Wasn't that a Frankie Valli tune?

"I dated in the past afew woman with very small breast size..."

http://www.afewpets.org/

Hmmm.

Any way you look at it, I suspect DefenderofIslam was dating a dog.

Title: The Kinks - Lola lyrics

I met her in a club down in North Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Cherry Cola
C-O-L-A Cola.

She walked up to me and she asked me to dance.
I asked her name and in a dark brown voice she said, "Lola"
L-O-L-A Lola, lo lo lo Lola

Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy,
But when she squeesed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola, lo lo lo Lola

Well, I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walks like a woman and talks like a man
Oh my Lola, lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola

Well, we drank champagne and danced all night,
Under electric candlelight,
She picked me up and sat me on her knee,
She said, "Little boy won't you come home with me?"

Well, I'm not the world's most passionate guy,
But when I looked in her eyes,
I almost fell for my Lola,
Lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola

I pushed her away. I walked to the door.
I fell to the floor. I got down on my knees.
I looked at her, and she at me.

Well that's the way that I want it to stay.
I always want it to be that way for my Lola.
Lo lo lo Lola.

Girls will be boys, and boys will be girls.
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world,
except for Lola. Lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo Lola.

Well I left home just a week before,
and I never ever kissed a woman before,
Lola smiled and took me by the hand,
she said, "Little boy, gonna make you a man."

Well I'm not the world's most masculine man,
but I know what I am and that I'm a man,
so is Lola.
Lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo Lola.

well folks...as amusing as some of the comments were. I must say that I was sorry to see some disparaging comments about her appearance.
She has had more then enough burdens placed on her because of the accident of her birth place.
The fact that she overcame so many obstacles and made to the Olympics makes me wonder how well she would have done in a society that was shall we say more, encouraging of women. Besides, what man in her culture would marry a woman who is superior to him as an athlete?

Well the FBI did than study in how people walk it dispell many myth like man walk one way and woman walk than other way. It is true only 75% of the time. The East Gemany did have some men undergo partial sex change operation so they will phyical look like than woman in many way they have than vagrie and clitoris like a woman. They gave then female hormsone so they breast tissue enlarge into a woman breast. Man and woman both make male and female hormsone to voild dieing from chemical inbalance and woman who have only female hormsone of than certain type without it male counterpart have than highter change of get cancer. Than other mystery is the female hormsone that cause man to grow female breast doesnot make female breast larger
when they give female more of the hormsone to take.
So in the 1960's they have to find than better way to test for sex that wasnot depence on subject methord like she so ugled that she must be than man or she like like a man so she must be than man. It also have to hard to fool. They are alway improve the test they use. Many of the drag queen take female hormsone to grow breast and some look
better than real woman due to other hormsone that make then look better it only work on man for some reason. Some of the small breast women I dated where 26 1/2-26-27 or 27-26-27 an woman back then wore loose fitting clothing instead of the tight clothing now.

DefenderOfIslam -

Dude, you are beating a dead horse. Is she a muslima or not? Hard to tell with that silly "islamic terrorism against women" tracksuit. Just get a DNA test (not invented by Muslims) and the world will know for sure.

By the way, a number of terrorists have used the burqa or Islam "dress" to escape detection. If Islam was really the "religion of peace", wouldn't human life be more important than encasing women in tents?
