Piracy as a jihadist activity has a pedigree at least as old as the Barbary conflicts with Europe and the new United States, and the Islamic slave raiding pirates vividly described in Giles Milton's book White Gold. "Somali pirates seize 8 ships," from News24.com, August 25 (thanks to Jeffrey Imm):
Nairobi - Around eight ships have been seized by pirates off the lawless Somali coast with gunfire being reported during one of the hijackings, an official said on Monday."Around eight ships have been seized, but we believe there were no fatalities," Andrew Mwangura, the head of the Kenya-based East African Seafarers' Assistance Programme told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
"There was a shoot-out at one of the ships, but it was a quarrel between the gunmen," he continued. "We understand there were no injuries."
Earlier reports had suggested three sailors had been killed.
Mwangura said it was too early to give full details on all of the seized craft, but said that they were a mix of tankers and cargo ships.
Piracy off Somalia's lawless coast has surged in the last three months.
A total of four ships - from Germany, Japan, Iran and Malaysia - were seized last week alone....
Pirates, armed with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons, use speedboats to pursue their targets....
Given the history of this area, why aren't these ships armed with small arms at least?
If you go into a bad neighborhood looking like a potential mugging victim, you're probably going to get mugged. If you look like you can defend yourself, chances are pretty good that the thugs will let you pass.

No good, unless they're permitted to fire in self-defense and not face war crimes or other charges afterward. They also have to be WILLING to shoot to kill. Sink those speedboats and not listen to the wailings later about the "innocent fishermen" who were killed.

With ships from Iran and Malaysia seized, it begs the question how Islamic sharia would punish these pirates. Maybe Ahmedinejad and Mahathir could suspend their vitriol against Israel and Jews for a moment and comment on this?
Lots of the time the Governmental people are involved in pirating ships. There are also many known Insurance frauds. I still think sinking any number of pirate ships will put a stop to all of this. Till then, pirating should be no news, it is business as normal.

Another one of bush's massive failings. It seems to me this problem could have been dealt with rather easily without convoys, escorts, or other naval deployments that would tie up our resources. Why couldn't the Navy buy a used (excuse me, pre-owned) cruise ship, equip it w/ sophisticated electronic gear, arm it to the hilt w/ our best weapons, man it w/ a Navy crew dressed in civvies, and then cruise the pirate-infested waters until they take the bait? Once an approaching boat is identified as pirates, jam the hell out of their communications so they can't warn anybody, and then blast away. No quarter, no prisoners. Back to Happy Hour. Repeat as necessary.

Walterc, I think sheik yer booty has it right. Like their 'prophet', these are above all, consummate cowards. If they perceive someone ready to defend themselves, they will leave them alone. If one takes on the appearance of a defenseless commercial vessel, they will attack. The trick is to look like a lamb, and then bare the fangs of a lion. You want to kill them, not let them attack someone else. I agree that the heavily-armed commercial vessel in disguise is the best approach. Take no prisoners.

Anyone who has watched the final third of the Peter Weir film, 'Master and Commander" will understand what 'infidel33' is talking about.
Basic unarmed and armed combat training for all kafir seamen wouldn't be a bad idea, either. Greeks, Filipinos, Pacific Islanders are all heavily represented on oceangoing vessels.
Memo to any kafir reading this who may happen to work in, or has relatives or friends employed with, the merchant fleet of your kafir country or of another kafir country - for all I know, you may be a ship's captain, an engineer, hey, even chief cook - if your ship sails near coasts inhabited by Mohammedans, particularly in the South China sea and in the regions off north-east Africa, BE WARNED. And be prepared!
Furthermore: if you have any Mohammedans anywhere amongst your crew...WATCH YOUR BACK. Perhaps hiring practices should be reviewed.

I hazard a guess that those ships that fall victims to the pirates belong to the cheap bastards who don't want to spend a penny on security and prefer insurance benefits.
I don't know how many square miles of water we are speaking about. Our naval brass has a good idea of what aproaches are practical. I would expect a number of options exist that greatly depend upon how much diversion of naval effort we are willing to make. It is worth every effort. We have fought a number of wars over freedom of the seas.
And lets not forget the sea battle of Lepanto in 1571, and the massacre of Christians at Famagusta after being tricked by promises to spare their lives in 1570 - both during Shakespeare's lifetime. This just shows how history has been rewritten and in many cases, selectively erased in the craven apologist Fiskie mind. And it is the Fisks who do so much damage to the West.

Canada to escort food ships into Somalia

HALIFAX–Defence Minister Peter MacKay says Canada will send the Halifax-based frigate HMCS Ville de Quebec to waters off the horn of Africa to stop pirates from attacking food shipments bound for Somalia.
At a news conference in Halifax today, MacKay said the frigate will be diverted from a NATO mission to the Mediterranean.
He said the warship will provide escort for U.N. world food program vessels travelling into "designated Somali ports."
MacKay said the population of Somalia is facing serious food shortages and could run out of food stocks by mid-August, so Canada has agreed to become part of an effort to avoid a more serious crisis.
He said the Ville de Quebec is currently en route. The vessel, which had been at sea since July, is expected to return to Halifax by December.
I hope sending the Ville de Quebec will help, and that her officers have the balls to fire on these pirates. Blow them out of the water!
The Royal Navy stopped arresting pirates because of 'Human Rights' issues. The Foreign Office allows pirates to claim asylum because they might face bloody Islamic justice when returned to Somalia. So the Navy has been advised just not to bother. What a joke.

Weeell: for the truly military-minded, there *are* alternatives to "arrest and Return to Sender", or 'catch and keep as POW', when the Enemy consists of ever-increasing swarms of ethics-free murderous thugs who are, according to their 'religion', permanently at war on everybody else who doesn't belong to their Gang nor wishes to join, ever.
