Omeed Aziz Popal, perhaps with the arranged bride who drove him mad
When Omeed Aziz Popal, like Muhammad Reza Taheri-azar, drove his SUV into people, he was clearly trying to hurt or kill them. Like Taheri-azar, he seemed completely calm and at peace with himself after the incident. Like Taheri-azar, who explained his jihadist motivations in detailed letters full of Qur'an quotes, he then identified himself as a terrorist. Police, however, quickly ruled out the possibility of terrorism -- again, as they did in the case of Taheri-azar.
The cases are different, of course, in that Taheri-azar repeatedly demonstrated his jihadist motivations, while Popal, at least according to published reports, only identified himself as a terrorist once. Popal, we were told, was suffering from stress over an arranged marriage. And now he has been found not guilty of murder, by reason of insanity.
Maybe Popal really is insane. Certainly there is plenty of evidence that he is. I wonder, however, if the judge even considered the possibility that he had a jihadist motivation, or that such a motivation could coexist with insanity. Given the general ignorance of the jihad ideology and political correctness that prevails everywhere, I doubt it. This is yet another case in which possible jihad elements don't seem to have been investigated, but simply swept under the rug. If law enforcement officials had ever shown any awareness of the possibility of a freelance jihad strike by someone with no connection to any terrorist group, there might be less cause for suspicion. But they haven't.

(07-31) 18:31 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- The Fremont man accused of a hit-and-run rampage in San Francisco two years ago that injured 16 pedestrians was found not guilty by reason of insanity by a Superior Court judge Thursday, a ruling that will keep him out of state prison but could result in his being institutionalized for the rest of his life.Judge Carol Yaggy ruled after prosecutors and the defense agreed to waive a trial on whether Omeed Aziz Popal was legally insane at the time of the attacks Aug. 29, 2006. Popal, 31, was accused of 16 counts of attempted murder and other felonies.
Yaggy cited the findings of two court-appointed doctors, who said Popal was bipolar and schizophrenic when he ran down the pedestrians, one of whom was left paralyzed.
Popal will be institutionalized for at least two years, when he will be entitled to a release hearing. If he is not found sane, he will be entitled to similar hearings every two years.
However, under Yaggy's ruling, the burden of proof is on Popal for as long as 55 years, when it would shift to the prosecution to show why he should remain hospitalized....
Feinland said Popal's family was "happy he is going to get help rather than prison."
Relatives and Popal's attorneys said he had been hospitalized for mental problems at least twice in 2006 before the hit-run attacks, and that he had confessed to a San Francisco killing that police concluded he did not commit.
In the court-ordered evaluations in San Francisco, one doctor found that Popal's "history of mental illness is clear and rather compelling" and concluded he suffered from a "genuine psychotic disorder."
Popal has been hearing voices ordering him to hurt people since he was 18 and has suffered from hallucinations, the doctor said.
During the hit-run attacks, another doctor found, Popal believed that a "tall dark person" was in the passenger seat of his Honda Pilot sport utility vehicle, urging him to drive faster and run down people.
Both doctors concluded that Popal lacked the mental capacity to know what he was doing was wrong.
Mike Mahoney, the now-retired San Francisco police inspector who investigated the case, scoffed at the insanity argument.
"He knew exactly what he did. He told me exactly what he did," Mahoney said.
The most seriously injured of Popal's victims in San Francisco, massage therapist Susan Rajic, was paralyzed from the neck down when she was struck near her home at Laurel and California streets. Mahoney said he would like to bring her before a judge and "let the court see what the hell he did. She has a life sentence to a wheelchair."
Fremont victim was first
Authorities believe Popal began his attacks in Fremont by ramming 54-year-old Stephen Wilson with his SUV as Wilson walked in a bike lane on Fremont Boulevard. He died at the scene.
Popal then drove to San Francisco and, in the course of half an hour shortly after lunchtime, ran down people from the Tenderloin to Laurel Heights, authorities said. Most of the injured were hit along a corridor of roughly 10 blocks running west from Pacific Heights.
Witnesses described seeing the black SUV chasing pedestrians and bicyclists up the street and across lawns. In some cases, the driver circled back to hit people prone in the street.
The attack finally stopped when police cruisers boxed in Popal's SUV outside a drugstore on Spruce Street near California Street.
Officers said Popal had calmly told them that "everyone needs to be killed." He said he had thought about killing people "since yesterday," according to a police report.
"I planned to kill those people I ran over," police quoted him as saying. "They needed to be killed."...

The horrific beheading murder on the Greyhound bus in Canada seems very suspicious to me. The RCMP have not yet released the murderer's name, although he has been in custody for over 24 hours now.
If, and this is only speculation on my part, but if he is a muslim, the next thing we'll be hearing is, "But of course he doesn't represent all muslims, and we won't tolerate any backlash against muslims...islam is a religion of peace.....yada yada yada..."

Having been injured in a car accident over three years ago, I can testify to the agony of a chronic injury. I'm sure that at least few of the 16 injured are living with chronic pain just like I am.
And this fellow gets a pass? If he has any assets, some of those injured should take him to court on a civil case. Even if Popal has no assets, he should have had car insurance. Go after that! Insurance coverage isn't predicated on the insured's sanity as far as I know.

In one report I saw yesterday, a witness described the man's appearance as "aboriginal". I'm not sure what that means in a Canadian context. I think you're right. The lone individual running people down in his car (I shuddered when I read how he ran over people already lying prone in the street) can be portrayed as just a whacko.

Some sage here brought this up not long ago: what's needed is a separate federal court made up of judges/jurors who understand jihad w/o the PC filters. Any crime, the prima facie elements of proof of which suggest a jihadist motivation, should be tried before these courts and not in front of idiots off the streets.
I predict:
He will suddenly become "sane" after about 6 months of "intensive therapy"; his lawyer(s) will appeal to the court that since he's now "well" it would be cruel and inhumane to keep him locked away from society, his family, the therapeutic value of work, the spiritual support of his religion, etc, etc.
The appeals court will agree.
He'll be released. Then, in about 6 more months, his "temporary insanity" will return and more American Infidels will be maimed and killed.
His lawyers will argue that he "has a history of mental illness", so he'll go back to the hospital.

Yes. In addition, at the time, KTVU (local FOX affiliate) reported that a woman at the scene of the arrest heard Popal say "I'm a terrorist, I don't care." A second witness confirmed the first's account. This is extremely significant--it is doubtful that a random bystander would know anything about the phenomenon of vehicular Jihad--I think it likely she was reporting exactly what she heard Popal say.

This is also misleading. Yes, Popal *was* arrested outside a drugstore--but there is no mention that that drugstore is right next to San Francisco's large Jewish Community Center. Popal had just hit two people right outside the center at a bus stop when apprehended.
He had to drive about thirty miles from Fremont to get there--through the East Bay, over the Bay Bridge, and accross almost the entire city of San Francisco to get there. I think it likely that this was always his destination.
And yet, within hours of Popal's arrest, police asserted that there was no evidence of Popal's intent to commit an act of terrorism.

In 1920 Samuel Zwemer, in "Moslem World," Vol. 10, pp. 154-155), reported the words of a Muslim in Baghda, as written in a French journal entitled, The Final Word of Islam to Europe:
"For us in the world there are only believers and unbelievers; love, charity, fraternity toward believers; contempt, disgust, hatred, and war against unbelievers."
It appears to me that Popal was simply acting out to the letter the 'contempt, disgust, hatred and war' that Islam prescribes as suitable treatment for non-Muslims.
He may indeed have been schizophrenic or psychopathic. But if so, he was a MUSLIM schizophrenic, or a MUSLIM psychopath, all fitted out with a mental grid that told him 'Kafir are the ENEMY', 'it's not wrong to kill kafir', 'kill kafir!'
This is "Alice in Wonderland" stuff.
By Islamic standards he is perfectly sane no doubt, because he kills infidels. But the judge says he is insane by our standards and so no jail or execution. Instead he is put into a mental institution where he will undoubtedly run into an Islamic psyciatrist somewhere who will say that he is perfectly sane because he is just acting like an Islamic.
We've got to do better than this in our judicial system.
Any way this guy could have an "accident" before or when he gets out? Jeffrey Dahmer was handled that way.. put this creep in with some regular crooks and see what happens.

I've since learned that Popal will be tried for murder at a later date. The murder was committed in Fremont, California, not San Francisco. Fremont--between Oakland and San Jose--is the suburb where Popal lived. It is also home to the U.S.'s largest population of Afghan immigrants.
Fatally running down Stephen Wilson was Popal's first act of vehicular violence, before heading over to San Francisco to continue his rampage. My guess is that he decided on San Francisco because, while most Bay Area cities have fairly large Jewish populations, San Francisco's Laurel Heights and inner Richmond come closest to being "Jewish neighborhoods", and have a large number of synagogues in addition to the large Jewish community center. San Francisco is also famous as a pedestrian city, with large numbers of people out walking--lots of targets.
There are fewer pedestrians in suburban Fremont--Mr. Wilson had the terrible misfortune to have just dropped his car off to have some work done, and was walking back home when Popal struck him down.
The fact that these acts of violence occured in different counties and about thirty miles apart is meaningless--it was obviously the same rampage--they should have been tried as a single case.
So, while Popal will be tried for murder in Alameda county, I think it is unlikely that an Alameda judge will find him competant to stand trial, after a San Francisco judge has found him insane.
So it is unlikely that any justice will be done.

As long as they (terrirsts) keep on changing their tactics on how to kill us we will keep dismissing each act of terrorism as an accidental murder, murder by insanity, issolated incident, random accident, and so on... We will never run out of terms to label their acts of terrorism. It is fuuny how (incidentally) all these acts of terrorism are performed by muslims and always killing infidels. When are we going to wake up and tell it as it is, terrorism killing.
