An important message from Patrick Poole updating this story:
The Dayton Daily News has been walking back their coverage of the so-called mosque incident this weekend. The initial article on Saturday was "Chemical irritant empties Islamic Society of Greater Dayton's mosque":http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/content/oh/story/news/local/2008/09/27/ddn092608evacweb.html
Then on Sunday the story was "Islamic Society baffled by incident at worship service":
http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/content/oh/story/news/local/2008/09/28/ddn092808islamicweb.html
Then yesterday they walked all the way back, "Police: No evidence of hate crime at local mosque":
http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/content/oh/story/news/local/2008/09/29/ddn092908mosquefoloweb.html
But if you follow any of those three links, they take you to the exact same article -- the last one. The previous two stories have been scrubbed from the website.
Flaming the fires of kafirphobia. I'm hoping to have a copy of the incident report tomorrow. Will forward details.
PS: This isn't the first Muslim hate crime hoax in the Dayton area.
Here is a Google Cache link for the first scrubbed story, and here is a Google Cache link for the second.
What is the Dayton Daily News trying to hide?
For posterity's sake, and in an attempt to keep whoever is doing this from getting away with whitewashing the record, here are the texts of both spurious stories:
Chemical irritant empties Islamic Society of Greater Dayton's mosque By Kyle Nagel Staff Writer Saturday, September 27, 2008DAYTON — Baboucarr Njie was preparing for his prayer session Friday night, Sept. 26, when he heard children in the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton coughing. Soon, Njie himself was overcome with fits of coughing and, like the rest of those in the building, headed for the doors.
"I would stay outside for a minute, then go back in, there were a lot of kids," Njie said. "My throat is still itchy, I need to get some milk."
Njie was one of several affected when a suspected chemical irritant was sprayed into the mosque at 26 Josie St., bringing Dayton police, fire and hazardous material personnel to the building at 9:48 p.m.
Someone "sprayed an irritant into the mosque," Dayton fire District Chief Vince Wiley said, noting that fire investigators believe it was a hand-held spray can.
According to fire dispatch communications, a child reported seeing two men with a white can spraying something into a window. That child was brought to the supervising firefighter at the scene.
Wiley would not discuss that report, but said the investigation has been turned over to police. Police were not commenting.
The 300 or so inside were celebrating the last 10 days of Ramadan with dinner and a prayer session, but the prayer session was interrupted so those suffering from tearing, coughing and shortness of breath could receive treatment.
Wiley said an adult and juvenile were taken to area hospitals and others had their eyes or faces washed on the scene. He did not know how many people were treated at the scene.
Ismail Gula, ISGD secretary, said people were praying during the weekly service when some in the audience began to cough and experience breathing troubles, then left the building. Once outside, several of them called 911, Gula said.
Tarek Sabagh, a member of the ISGD board, wasn't present when the incident occurred.
He said his daughter called and told him to stay away because of the possibility of remaining fumes. Sabagh arrived shortly after and watched from the mosque's steps as members were allowed back inside about 11 p.m. to collect belongings.
"It's very disturbing," Sabagh said. "Something like this has never happened before."
Sabagh said members moved to a Beavercreek school to finish their prayer session as police continued to investigate.
"I don't know if people will have the feeling of trust to come back tomorrow or next week or next month," Sabagh said. "I don't know how people will feel."
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. During the month, Muslims fast (do not eat) from sunrise to sunset. In the evening and in the morning before the sun comes up, they eat small meals. During this month, they take extra time for family, inner reflection, and spiritual growth.

And:
Islamic Society baffled by incident at worship service By Doug Page Staff Writer Sunday, September 28, 2008DAYTON — The Muslim community gathered Sunday, Sept. 28, 48 hours after an unknown irritant disrupted worship at the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton.
"We were in the midst of the Fifth Prayer when people started coughing," said Ismail Gula, the society's secretary.
Gula said the building was evacuated and the service to break the daily fast of Ramadan continued at a nearby facility.
He said he had no idea what might have caused the incident. "It might be anything," he said.
Gula said he had received many calls of support from Christians and Jews over the weekend.
When Dayton fire and emergency personnel arrived at 26 Josie St. on Friday night, they noticed an odor. HAZMAT workers checked the structure for pepper spray and other irritants, but found nothing.
Police said they were continuing their investigation.
Also on Sunday, members of several Dayton religious groups were scheduled to view and discuss a DVD about Islamic radicalism mailed to some area homes and circulated with newspapers here and around the country.
"Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West," was a paid advertising insert in the Dayton Daily News, Springfield News-Sun, Hamilton JournalNews and Middletown Journal, all owned by Cox Ohio Publishing, on Monday, Sept. 22. It appeared in more than 70 other newspapers nationwide.
The Rev. Gary Percesepe, executive director of Greater Dayton Christian Connections, characterized the DVD as "fanning the flames of fear and prejudice against Muslims, with the potential to inspire hate crimes."

That's because they (they being CAIR and their media lapdogs) were trying to sell the story as a hate crime being caused by the Obssession movie newspaper insert. They were also trying to link that to Republicans, and score the Democrats some points. Totally disgusting, low-down, and sadly, the norm for the media. CAIR I understand, but the media....
It's just shameful. These journalists don't even know the meaning of the word. What the media is repsonsible for, in regards to freedom, they don't know the slightest thing about. They don't deserve to call themselves journalists!
Huh, clearly they were lucky here. If this attack had been real, which it was not, and it had been committed by an opposing sect of Islam it could have been a truck bomb and obliterated the entire building. Close one.
The Dayton Daily News, or those on it implicated in the first story (now scrubbed), and the second story (now scrubbed), and the third story, which fails to discuss, as it should, stories one and two, and apologize to readers, need to be investigated and held up for examination, criticism, ridicule, and perhaps -- firing.
And we shall all wait for the Dayton Daily News, or those who own it, to publish as a Very Large Editorial a discussion of these successive versions of the story, and the attempts -- unsuccessful I'm afraid -- to cover their tracks, and to scrub the previous fairy tales.
No, not acceptable.
From the lone story clinging by its fingernails to the estimable Daily News' website:
"Mosque board member Tarek Sabagh said many people within the mosque speculated that the incident was the result of a DVD about Islamic radicalism titled "Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West" that was mailed to area homes by its producers and circulated as a paid advertisement with more than 70 newspapers, including the Dayton Daily News.
"We are not linking the two at all," Sabagh said.""
Aah, Mr. Sabagh has been well-trained by his handlers in the litigation concept of "you can't unring a bell." And who are the "we" not making this explained-in-considerable-detail non-link?
It is hypocritical to say "obsession causes violence against muslims" when the movie suggests no such thing, and then expect the koran to be innocent of the massive numbers of murders it has caused and continues to cause due to its rantings.
If we are going to examine obsession, let us then examine islam and see the hateful attitude it creates toward non-muslims.
Finally, because this is too funny: is the reporter taking dictation from the imam in that final paragraph? "Small meals" during Ramadan, eh?

"Ramadan was a time of frustration and anger. Their obese son, Mehdi, struggled to contain his appetite at a time of year when it becomes normal to consume the equivalent of several meals at one sitting."
Dozens and dozens more of reports just like this, Intrepid Reporter, all right there on the Web!
Islam in America is temporal, at best, if simple common sense prevails.
Time will tell.
If these Muslims want to talk about real potential "hate" crimes how about this? Remember when this Siddiqui dirt bag was caught?
Remember this story?

Then the responce by PakRocks?
Post by PakRocks:
Just look at the hate filled comments against a defence less woman. Arnt you the first to highlight the 'injustices' towards women in Muslim countries ?
What about the in justice that is being dished out to this woman ?!
Just because she is not whore like the ones you have in west does not mean she is lesser woman.
If US wants to play by rules then at least give this poor woman a fair trail ( how fair that trail can be reamins questionable though given the circumstances ) instead of locking her away in the most horendous conditions and denying her children their mother and not even letting them know her fate.
You lot are the most spineless , gutter worms I have ever come across and I wont even hesitate in saying it to your faces
This just in from worldnetdaily. Seems Siddiqui had pretty big plans. Read it all here. Incredible.
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=76415
Siddiqui's notes also discussed "mortality rates associated with certain of these weapons and explosives," the indictment says. Other notes referred to various ways to attack "enemies," including destroying reconnaissance drones, using underwater bombs and using gliders.
A computer thumb drive in Siddiqui's possession contained electronic correspondence that referred to specific "cells" and "attacks" by certain "cells," the indictment says. Other documents referred to "enemies," including the U.S., and discussed recruitment and training.
Officials say subsequent interrogations have revealed that possibly hundreds of American Muslims, many of them of Pakistani descent, have traveled to Pakistan in recent years to train at al-Qaida and Taliban madrassas and terror camps and have returned to the U.S. to carry out suicide attacks.
The revelation has shocked the politically sensitive FBI into abandoning its long-held policy of coordinating investigations in the Muslim community with Muslim-rights groups. Officials say it's more important than ever to track down Muslims who have traveled to Pakistan, and gather and disseminate intelligence quickly to disrupt possible terror plots before they can develop to an operational stage.
Of course the title is an appeal to emotion, a cynical reference to the "gassing of the Jews" in the holocaust, which some of them deny that ever happened.
These are the "journalist" of today, devoid of any values and principles.
Despicable.

How can you NOT understand the media? They have been doing the exact same thing since 9/11: searching furiously for evidence of widespread ill will among Americans toward the entire Muslim community, particularly among Republicans.
When they can't find it, they invent it. A single incident by a single person becomes a hate crime if it's committed against a Muslim.
Oh, but if a single incident by a single person is committed BY a Muslim - even if it kills or hurts dozens of people in broad daylight - it's "nothing but an accident" or "shouldn't reflect upon all Muslims".
Pardon me for projecting, but I think the Muslims did this one to themselves. That girl may indeed have been sprayed with something, by another MUSLIM. The media fell for it - hook, line and sinker, just as they always do. Muslims have given me ample reason not to believe their tales of woe. The media has as well. Almost no newspaper in this country is worth the paper it's printed on.
The worst thing is that Ohio is a swing state in this year's election and events like this one get more play in the national media than they deserve. The people of Dayton have far more impact on this year's election than even the people of New York City or Los Angeles.
I no longer waste my time reading any local newspaper. Several years ago I called the Editor of a local newspaper to complain about blatant bias in an AP article. He said, and I paraphrase, "Do you actually think that we are supposed to read all this stuff (in our newspaper)?
Since they no longer feel responsible for what they print, why read hearsay and lies?
Today's update:
http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/content/oh/story/news/local/2008/09/30/ddn093008mosquecopsweb.html
Notice the pepper spray found is a black can. Doesn't this conflict with the red and white type description first given by the 10-year-old?
Also, isn't the pepper spray an oily type substance? Why, then, was nothing found on the girl or the window?
Yawn. At least the story isn't a headline on their website.
Sorry, one other thought. The 10-year-old was watching other children in the mosque basement. How lovely that we leave 10-year-olds in charge of little ones. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, given she can expect to be married off and pregnant herself shortly, if she's not married already.
In my church, I don't recall a child of that age ever being left in a position of that kind of responsibility.
It's a good thing we can trust them to get the story straight before printing it :)
"Notice the pepper spray found is a black can. Doesn't this conflict with the red and white type description first given by the 10-year-old?"
winoceros,
But it was in a "red and white bag". The girl only saw them spraying her and might have gotten the details wrong.
That this was found near the mosque only makes the Muslims look more guilty. Would anyone else with ample time to get away have left the evidence right there for people to find? If they were holding it in the bag to avoid putting fingerprints on the can then why leave the bag behind? Details, details!
Unfortunately, with all the crying that Muslims are doing about this, the "hate crime" narrative will probably stick in the minds of the public.
Liberal websites are running sympathy for them all over the place while blaming the Obsession DVD
http://www.racialicious.com/2008/10/01/only-muslims-can-be-%e2%80%9cterrorists%e2%80%9d/
Spurious stories? I'm afraid I fail to see anything that stands out as undeniably inaccurate or irresponsbile in the first article. And, basically, the same for the second article, though the relevance of including the material about 'Obsession' is, I think, a legitimately debatable matter.
Rather, when a car explodes in Israel, and this website proclaims 'the jihad cotinues', only to have Israeli authorities later discount any connection to Arabs or Muslims, that would fit the description of spurious.
The REALLY BIG story here is that Allah didn't know that forensic science would exist and thus this huge fabrication. I think the people in the mosque who fabricated this story should be brought up on charges of false reporting.
