Does Islam Justify Honor Killings?

Supna Zaidi, the assistant director of Islamist Watch and daughter of my dear and much-missed friend the late Tashbih Sayyed, considers this question in an article of the same name at Pajamas Media (September 27):

Sandela Kanwal wanted a divorce for unknown reasons. Maybe her husband in Chicago was a wife-beater. Maybe she just didn't like him. We don't know. For months, she had been trying to get her father to end her unhappy marriage and in July 2008 Sandela tried again. This time, Chaudhry Rashad strangled his daughter to death. When the police arrived, he stated that he did nothing wrong and later demanded that he be provided halal food while in jail.

What kind of an ideology causes a man to show no remorse for murdering his own daughter, but rants and raves at being served ham sandwiches while in prison? The media picked up the story quickly and asked, "Is Islam to blame?"

On CNN, Zuhdi Jasser, of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, tried to paint Rashad as a backward cultural aberration, stating:

It [the honor killing of Sandela] has nothing to do with Islam. This is a tribal, medieval mentality that is seen in tribes in Pakistan and India, and often is not even seen in Islamic communities. It's basically part of the ignorance of the tribal community.

On Fox News, Irshad Manji, on the other hand, stated that these killings are often done in the name of Allah and compared them to honor killings in the last century in Italy, which were carried out by Catholics. She notes that these killings are often done with the name of "Allah dripping from their lips."

The media and moderate Muslims like Jasser and Manji miss the point. The victim was not Islam but a 25-year-old girl. An honor killing is defined as the murder of a girl or woman who has allegedly committed an act that has shamed and embarrassed her family. For the family to show its community that it has reasserted control, the woman is killed. Thus, "harm to reputation" is a partial or complete defense to murder. No passage in the Koran discusses honor killings, but Muslim clerics justify them and secular Muslims either do not punish them or pass laws to mitigate punishment for them. With this, Muslims make honor killings a part of Islam.

Honor killings are justified under Islam in some Muslim countries such as Saudi Arabia. For example, tenth-grade textbooks teach Saudi children that it is permissible to kill adulterers. In April 2008, a girl was killed by her father for talking to a boy on Facebook, an online social networking website. A leading Saudi cleric, Sheikh Ali al-Maliki, was outraged that girls had access to such websites where they could post pictures of themselves and otherwise "behave badly," but showed no concern over the girl actually killed.

Honor killings are justified as a necessary part of culture in other Muslim countries such as Jordan, which is technically a secular kingdom with a representative parliament. In 2001 King Abdallah presented a bill outlining stiff penalties for honor killings, but parliament rejected it, stating, "it [punishing honor killings] would encourage adultery and create new social problems." Four years later, honor killings accounted for one-third of all violent deaths in Jordan in 2005, where perpetrators received as little as six months in prison under the penal code.

Secular Iraq offers no punishment. Consider the following anecdotal evidence. This year, a 17-year-old named Rand Abdel-Qader was killed by her father because she had a crush on a British soldier. The arresting Iraqi sergeant stated that "not much can be done when we have an ‘honor killing' case. You are in a Muslim society and women should live under religious laws." The father also killed his wife, who left him after the murder of their daughter. He will not be prosecuted for either murder in Iraq.

Leaving honor killings at the doorstep of illiterate villagers, as Jasser does, ignores the problem on a humane level in favor of intellectual debate. The more secular, educated elites of Muslim countries may not be so backward as to commit such crimes themselves, but they know it is happening and prefer to look the other way. The upper and middle classes have a responsibility as civic and political leaders to defend women through education, the law, and enforcement of meaningful punishments. The "Qatif Girl" case in Saudi Arabia is a good example. Attorney Abdul Rahman al-Lahem represented a gang-rape victim who was punished for being with non-related men (the rapists) without a chaperone. Al-Lahem lost his license for bringing the case to the media. Following international pressure, the disciplinary committee at the Justice Ministry in Riyadh agreed to return it.

Irshad Manji's analysis hit closer to the truth, but is incomplete. By bringing in Catholic honor killings a century ago, Manji throws in the "you too" defense — the "you" being the West — and implies that such murders will fall out of favor as societies modernize and become more secular.

Neither Jasser nor Manji addresses the issue of accountability. Chaudhry Rashad was not raised in a vacuum. If moderates reinforce the line that honor killings are "dripping" with Allah or are part of Eastern culture, those prone to such violent acts will continue on the same path. No Muslim will claim theological authority to enforce change from the mosque. Nor will Muslims be forced to act now if the implication from Manji is that culture takes centuries to evolve. But if everyone starts pointing the finger at Muslim society collectively and asks, "why do you let this happen?" maybe change will finally come.

Such reorientation away from divine "Islam" to fallible, human "Muslims" would move violence such as honor killings from the margins of society into the spotlight.

This will allow the current tangential debate of whether such killings are religious or cultural to finally end so we can focus on the girls who continue to be killed daily.

A better question for these muslim apologists is "What can you use in the koran to stop honor killings?" if in fact, islam doesn't condone honor killings. And why has islam not been able to stop honor killings? I want to see them squirm.

Irshad Manji worships "allah," a pagan moon deity that doesn't exist.

Her credibility? Zero.

Case closed.

Does Islam justify honor killings? It looks like Islam's leading clerics justify it, and it also looks like many countries with large Islamic populations condone it, so the answer is yes. Also, even if the Koran doesn't use the term "honor", it does give parents permission to murder "disobeying" children, and husbands permission to "discipline" wives, doesn't it? Again we have the word play that lets these snakes squirm out of directly pointing to their "holy book" when it suits them, and also to fall back on their book when it suits them.

Islam certainly accepts honor killings...no doubt about it..

he stated that he did nothing wrong and later demanded that he be provided halal food while in jail

GOOD FEED HIM HALAL HAM OR LET HIM STARVE

In Chicago? Chicago?!

Meanwhile, I get this tonight in an e-mail from my ex, who's located in the greater Chicago metropolitan area:

'In most of our discussions, you seem "preoccupied" with Islamic extremists,
terror, jihad, etc. Is that a function of the NYC environment? A day by day theme?'

My answer to him only can be (yet another) quote from Ayn Rand:

'The hardest thing to explain is the glaringly evident which everybody had decided not to see.'

Vee,

Don't let your ex get you down. Some people will not figure this out until it is their head being sawed off, their local supermarket being blown up or their nine year old daughter being sacrificed on the altar of Muslim marriage. When in doubt, come back here where your friends are and we'll remind you that this stuff happens every day, you are not losing your mind and we are the normal ones...pretty much! ; )

The hardest thing to explain is the glaringly evident which everybody had decided not to see.'

Wow, that covers just about everything happening in our crazy world today! I wonder why you, me, and everyone else who reads about, studies, and ponders the doom and gloom of islamic jihad somehow managed to tune in? Do we have special transmitters in our brains or what?

Do we have special transmitters in our brains or what?

I have always suspected that, but was hesitant to say so...
;)

From Zuhdi Jasser, an otherwise (relatively) upright person:

It [the honor killing of Sandela] has nothing to do with Islam. This is a tribal, medieval mentality that is seen in tribes in Pakistan and India, and often is not even seen in Islamic communities. It's basically part of the ignorance of the tribal community.
Maybe Jasser can explain why most of the honor killings in the US to date have been, not Paki, but Iranian, Turkish and others. Only reason Paki honor killings dominate the cases in UK is that the Pakis are the predominant ummah subset there.

As for Indians, while honor killings sometimes may happen in rural India, it never takes place among the upper classes of society - the type that migrates to the West. Otoh, for Mohammedans, be they from Pakistan, Jordan, Turkey, et al, while it's still their elites who migrate, and yet we see honor killings within Mohammedan elites take place. This is not to excuse what some Indians do, but it's still a major contrast between Indians, vs those Jasser seeks to shield from condemnation.

The hardest thing to explain is the glaringly evident which everybody had decided not to see.'

Vee

That's the best explanation that I've ever seen. I need to try that myself the next time anybody (relatives to boot, like in your case) tells me that I'm obsessed with Mohammedans.

"In most of our discussions, you seem "preoccupied" with Islamic extremists,
terror, jihad, etc. Is that a function of the NYC environment? A day by day theme?" --Vee's Ex

Vee, I can see why he's your Ex. His sarcasm and cavalier attitude concerning THE most important issue of our time - Islamic Terrorism - is revolting and stupid. Obviously you've got a lot more going on in your brain case than he does.

"Preoccupation" with the above RULES, people! Until we defeat them.

"Secular Iraq offers no punishment."

But, Iraq isn't secular. Sharia is enshrined within the Constitution, and there are 111 Shia religious holidays celebrated.

He's been my ex for oh, about 30 years, darcy, so LOL!

But yes, it still disturbs me that someone who was among the most rational people I knew (at that time) has now simply become obtuse. Sad.

It [the honor killing of Sandela] has nothing to do with Islam. This is a tribal, medieval mentality that is seen in tribes in Pakistan and India, and often is not even seen in Islamic communities. It's basically part of the ignorance of the tribal community.,

This looks like an argumentum ad primigenum, where because “we are primitives you have to let us do it”. This argument may hold in their primitive Sharia lands but it will not hold water here in the West. Either way, Islamic killing of one’s daughter, or wife or sister, is not acceptable under the modern laws of civilized society. If they admit they are primitives, then let them stay where they belong, in their primitive lands. But once they come to the West, they will be tried and judged by our laws, not their primitive Sharia.

No, feed him haram ham or let him starve.

Yes, Islam justifies honor killings.

Islam is evil, no doubt about that.

Vee, I agree that you shouldn't let your ex get you down. We're the only ones who aren't crazy. We like the minority of Germans in the 1930's who were saying 'is this really happening? This is intolerable and it's only going to get worse. Not only can it happen here, but it is happening.' Shoot, I'm funding it when I pay my taxes and my tuition, which go to the Hamas front group the Muslim Students Union which throws huge parties in celebration of 9/11.

And Infidel Pride, M. Zuhdi Jasser is a taqiyya artist of the highest order. I'm going to repost what I posted to Pajamas Media yesterday after I read that ridiculous crap. If he had a legitimate agenda he would have answered the question honestly, like somebody who lives in reality like the rest of us. He's Paki, for God's sake. Honor killing as an anomaly? He no doubt knew dozens of people who were honor killed or who are honor killers.

"Honor killing is explicitly justifed by Islamic law: http://www.jihadwatch.org/dhimmiwatch/archives/022448.php

It’s not a cultural aberration. It’s a Muslim thing, and it ultimately hinges upon pervasive pedophilia, as this is obviously the reason for Muslims’ obsession with virginity. It also hinges upon Muslim men’s need to control women, since exercising control over their own lives would amount to being more than a vagina/undead corpse in practice, which is what Muslim women are to be: dehumanized through silence, submission, and immobility, and living under eternal sex slavery, first under their brothers and fathers, who have ‘divine’ sanction to rape them at will (K 2.223) and then to whichever 50-year-old cousin their muhrim choose to pimp them away to under physical duress at age 5 for money.

And Irshad Manji’s tu quoque argument about ‘Italian’ honor killings is a complete misnomer. Honor killing was never an Italian phenomenon. It is a Sicilian phenomenon and Sicilians are as Arab, culturally-speaking, as Egyptians. It’s a ridiculously corrupt, extremely violent culture which, despite the presence of the Church, is completely devoid of morality. It’s an honor/shame culture of extremely misogynistic men who keep their women veiled and in near-purdah, which still has a pedophilic obsession with virginity, where inbreeding is rampant and the dowry system remains the norm. Sicilians are, compared to the rest of Europe, very lazy and resistant to change. They are Arabs for all intents and purposes.

If M. Zuhdi Jasser were not a taqiyya artist of the highest order he would have addressed the issue like someone who lives in reality and has a legitimate agenda, like the obviously deluded-to-the-point-of-mental-illness Irshad Manji, who, while crazy, completely separated from reality, and largely ignorant of Islam, is at least honest. Citing either one of them is like citing Dan Rather. Why select sources with zero credibility and dishonest or deluded agendas and no legitimate scholarship on the subject?"

Just because M. Zuhdi Jasser is published in FSM doesn't legitimate his illegitimate agenda. It de-legitimates FSM, since they're so easily conned by his craziness. Thank God Michele Malkin, Steve Emerson, Douglas Farah, and Walid Phares publish everything they print in there on their own websites/blogs so as to not defile their work just by virtue of having it a link away from his. He literally has 4 verses up his sleeve which he cites in order to substantiate his claim that Islam was never meant to be political and that Islam and democracy are somehow compatible, each one of which is Meccan and abrogated anyway. And whenever he writes an article it's always something along the lines of "The Pope is Catholic," as if it were some major revelation to us infidels. It's typical political Muslim behavior. He operates on the assumption - like every Muslim I have ever seen, met, read, or heard of - that infidels are as illiterate and ignorant as your average Muslim, who lives under pervasive milieu control and lacks a legitimate education or denies simple science and history out an complete inability to cope with cognitive dissonance. He's not even really trying. It kills me that Brigitte Gabriel praises him for being a 'religious' Muslim instead of a political one.

Islam is intolerable. Period. There are no 'good' Muslims, no 'moderate' Muslims, no 'anti-Sharia' Muslims. There are decent people who think they're Muslim, who know absolutely nothing about Islam, like Irshad Manji, and who wrongly ascribe a bunch of humanistic values to it like Ali Sina did before he read the Koran, but there are no decent actual Muslims and there never can be. They are only 'Muslim' to the extent that they are either deluded to the point of insanity or completely ignorant and illiterate.

Islam is always political and M. Zuhdi Jasser's taqiyya crusade is just another manifestation of this. It's not like those 'religious Muslims' assimilate into society. They still parasitize us and our culture and still fail to adopt the Judeo-Christian work ethic and most of our values. Their 'prayers' still concern Arab supremacy, genocide, hatred, and abject evil and constitute treasonous sedition. They still pimp their daughters into incestuous Sharia sex slavery. It's hard for me to believe that those Muslims who act decent around us aren't simply doing so because they are narcissists who thrive on other people's approval and because they are here for slow jihad - as jihad is the ONLY reason under Islamic law for a Muslim to be in an infidel land for more than 4 months - and that's how you do it. I cannot believe that they are the same people at the sleeper cell on Friday among their own kind, supporting the Taliban and drinking halal Israeli blood, nor are they the same at home while they're raping their 4-year-old daughters and sisters and beating their incestuous Sharia sex slaves. They still devote their lives to working for Islam, rather than for the good of the world, their society, or their families.

Under no circumstances is a totalitarian, fascist, supremacist, genocidal political system/death-cult for incestuous, inbred, baby-raping, Nazi terrorists acceptable. Under no circumstances is anyone who denies the existence and the pervasiveness of the Golden Rule a decent human being who deserves to live. Under no circumstances is anyone who believes in a God who hates the majority of his children and wants them dead, or in the divinity - the humanity even - of a rapist, pedophile, mass murderer, polygamist, slave-owner, racist, misogynist, narcissist, hypocrite, psychopath, necrophiliac, looter, pervert, incestuous, torturer, psychopath, monster, cult leader a decent human being worthy of being tolerated. Anyone who knows a damn thing about Islam and dares defend a single aspect of it is necessarily mentally ill and intolerably evil. Period. There is not one issue, one topic, one subject on which Muslims and reasonable, decent, thinking, moral, ethical, civilized, evolved, outbred people agree. The CSPI has tried to come up with one for years and haven't managed to.

Oh, I forgot to add that I am qualified to talk trash about Sicilians because I'm half-Italian and I have a BA in Italian. My mother was born in Rome and lived there until she was 7 and I've been there several times. I also had a weird obsession with depressing, old Sicilian movies for a while there, and I love Pirandello and Sciascia. 'Sciascia,' btw, is an Arabic name. It means 'bonnet.'

jdamn ... you have officially blown my mind ... i want to print out your comments and read it over a loudspeaker in the streets while running around in a joyous frenzy at your words which so perfectly and so completely describe what has been stifling in my mind for years ... I thank you for such excellent authorship ... however I think ill just go read it to my family now ... less risk of having my throat slashed while I sleep, by my next door Muslim neighbor

Thank you. I was half-surprised they didn't get deleted.
