France: Lawyer of Muslim armed robber requests trial delay because of Ramadan

Because the accused would be too weak to properly defend himself. Too bad Ramadan didn't start earlier this year, as the accused would've probably been too weak to commit the robbery in the first place -- that is, of course, if he's found guilty.

"Anger over 'Ramadan' trial delay," by Hugh Schofield for the BBC, September 7 (thanks to Ted):

A row has broken out in France after a court postponed a trial, apparently because it was to take place during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

Critics say the decision is a breach of France's strict separation of religion and state.

"Critics"? How about "objective observers"?
The trial of seven men for armed robbery was due to start on 16 September in Rennes.

But last week the court agreed to a request from a lawyer for one of the accused to put it off until January.

In his letter asking for the delay, the lawyer noted that if the trial were to start now, it would fall in the Muslim month of Ramadan.

His client, a Muslim, would have been fasting for two weeks and thus, he said, be in no position to defend himself properly.

He would be physically weakened and too tired to follow the arguments as he should.

I expect that the delay will be granted. Time will tell.

Its skipping lunch , not a FAST.

Immunity from the Law on religious grounds has great potential, doesn’t it?

I’m a Christian and I usually give up chocolate and beer for Lent.
If I commit a crime during Lent will the Police agree not to arrest me?

The lawyer makes it sound as if the client hasn't eaten in two weeks. Don't they just try to sleep the day away and then eat at night? Not actually as fast, more like a change of schedule.

Too weak to proceed from missing lunch...

You can't make this stuff up.

I have personally fasted on nothing but water for two weeks, on more than one occasion. I have done the same with a 'juice fast'. I even tried fasting 'on' beer and popcorn for eleven days. Allah was proud of that. I have never felt physically weak, or infirm from fasting while fasting. If anything, I am more alert, lighter on my feet and have more energy not less.
Unfortunately there is a point where fasting becomes starving. Starving is a condition near death. If your fasting has become starving, my advice is to stop fasting. I don't think any muslim has ever died while fasting for Ramadan, not from the fasting anyway.

This guy being to weak for court is a scam...

Fasting for two weeks and thus too weak??

It has been well documented that food consumption during the month of Ramadan hits a peak level among the Muslim community; more food is consumed during Ramadan than at any other time of the year. Sure, they don't eat between dawn and dusk (using the ability to discern between a black thread and a white one in ambient light to determine the beginning and end of the fasting times... a little trivia for you), but they make up for fasting during the daylight hours by gorging after sundown and right before sunrise. Just a quick check of any Arab, Persian, or other culturally Islamic restaurant will confirm this.

What a pathetic excuse! The attorney ought to be cited for contempt of court.

So all i have to do is commit a crime during Lent, and i can't be arrested? Groovy! I'm probably going to try that excuse on the cops and see what happens. Wish me luck!

The Muslim fast, like most of the "religion" of Islam, is a sham. They do not eat in the day, but more then make up for it in the night.

Lawyers. I guess they're the same all over the world.

Don't these guys realize they are trumpeting to the world that being an armed robber (murderer, terrorist etc) is fully consistent with being a faithful follower of Islam?

I guess they don't.

Sneaky. Very sneaky. The defendant is trying to set a precedent, for the first Sharia law in France: "No court trials during Ramadan".

I pray he doesn't get away with it.

Hey, shouldn't that picture be captioned Muslims praise the wisdom of Mohammed; assume the position for more of the same?
