The Journal Sentinel, like other newspapers, is getting a lot of reaction to a paid ad that got inserted in last Sunday's edition -- a DVD bearing the documentary ""Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against The West."
Most of the letters, apparently, seem to be complaints that the documentary, made in 2006, is a lot of anti-Muslim propaganda. Others -- see this post at Huffington by a guy who also writes for the newspaper industry site Editor & Publisher -- see it as "scaremongering." Some commentators were still more over-the-top: "What will you enclose next? KKK robes?" asked one letter writer to a newspaper in North Carolina.

Given that kind of build-up, who could help but watch the thing? It's worth seeing -- for starters, to experience the bemusement of looking and not finding the terrible things we're told not to look at.

What you end up seeing is pretty much a straightforward, even mainstream -- at least mainstream as outside the MSM -- indictment of the radical fringe of Islam. It looks like your typical "Frontline" episode, only with a little more background music and a lot less hyperbole -- other than that, talking heads and lots of clips from current Middle Eastern TV, which is the damning part.

The documentary makes this case: That a current tendency in Islam regards the West, especially the United States and Israel, as enemies to be destroyed and that achieving personal annihilation in forwarding that goal -- to die in jihad -- is a good and holy thing. This tendency is far from being a majority view, and yet neither is it suppressed; in fact, it is supported by regimes that allocate television airtime and publish schoolbooks.

In fact, the documentary goes out of its way to say that making war on the West is a minority preference, a point that would be disputed by a number of noted scholars of Islam in recent decades. Yet the film is clear: From the beginning titles that read, "Most Muslims are peaceful and do not support terror . . . this film is not about them," to the final minutes, the wrap-it-up interviews in which critics of radical Islam go to pains to absolve the faith's mainstream of any violent tendencies, the filmmakers were plainly striving to focus on one particular strand of Islamic thought rather than the religion as a whole.

This isn't a unique position. Lawrence Wright's "The Looming Tower" was built entirely on this distinction, documenting exactly how the ideas in Islam that inform and propel terrorism are both new, not mainstream and yet dangerous.

Yet having gotten that elementary distinction -- most Muslims are not terrorists, a point reiterated by the film showing some Muslim legal scholars denouncing terrorism on Bahraini television -- out of the way, the film does make a harsh case about the jihadists.

Part of it is the talking heads -- the film interviews at length the daughter of a prominent and early Palestinian terrorist, a converted former terrorist (Walid Shoebat, who spoke at UWM last winter despite raging hecklers), a Palestinian journalist, and other noted scholars, historians and journalists.

Much of the case lies in the clips in which radical Islamist clerics tell television audiences in the Middle East that their religion compels them to bring death to others. The casual, matter-of-fact way in which this happens is most striking -- there's the head of Hezbollah raging on, but then there's the Saudi cleric commenting in even tones about a brutal crime in Britain and noting, "There are people (in the West) who are enthusiastic about drinking elderly people's blood."

That this isn't unusual has been documented elsewhere, including by the Middle East Media Research Institute, which helped bring to light, among other things, a weirdly jihadist Palestinian children's television show.

"Obsession," however, usefully sums it all up if you haven't been following the issue closely. On and on goes the material: The Iraqi music videos flashing between American soldiers and crying children, the Palestinian youngsters reciting poetry about suicide bombing, the surreptitious tapes of the prominent British imam, Abu Hamza al-Masri, saying that non-Muslims are to be treated as cattle and killed without compunction.

One grim part is a segment of a Syrian-made TV drama, "Al-Shatat," in which Jewish men conspire to lure a boy to be slaughtered so that his blood could be used to make matzo for Passover -- a dramatization of a vile libel from medieval Europe that's still current in the Middle East.

Other more recent European toxins get aired around the Middle East, which the documentary shows in what may be its most controversial part, linking current anti-Semitism used by jihadists to the anti-Semitism of Nazi Germany. Yet the film brings the material: Practically identical anti-Jewish cartoons from Hitler's Germany and modern Egypt, shots of jihadists and supporters giving stiff-arm salutes, and a segment on links between Palestinians during the 1930s and Germany. This part of the movie has come under particular fire, but so far, the critics don't seem to engage with the actual allegations other than to say it's mean to bring them up.

Or inconvenient, which is what seems to be irritating those non-Muslims, generally on the political left, who are complaining about newspapers selling insert space to the documentarians. The DVDs were distributed primarily in swing states -- here, Florida, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Ohio, Michigan -- and the attached card mentions the upcoming elections.

Well, yeah. And? The real scandal is that a movie that's been out and available to be shown for two years now has been barred from wider release in part for political reasons, in part because of the kind of spinelessness displayed by one North Carolina newspaper publisher, at the Greensboro News & Record, who refused the insert as it was "divisive" and "serves no educational purpose."

No educational purpose other than, of course, connecting dots that some people think should remain utterly disconnected.

Perhaps the foremost point made by the filmmakers is that a series of terrorist attacks, big and small, in many countries around the world is continuing, as is the particular bending of a major religion to justify and encourage it. Recent polls suggest that the threat of Islamist terror has fallen off most Americans' mental radar. If one faults the documentarians for sending out the DVD now with the intent of altering that, one must say why bringing the matter up is not merely political but improperly so.

It is a political point to note that 9-11, the Madrid bombing, the London bombing, the Beslan slaughter, the Bali slaughter and dozens of other outrages were not merely linked in being terrorism but in being expressly and explicitly motivated by a particular kind of Islam. That isn't an anti-Muslim point; it is an anti-jihad one, and that it has become impolitic in some circles even to discuss the nature of the threat is exactly why it's worth talking about in a political season.

"People don't want to feel this is part of a single threat," Churchill biographer Sir Martin Gilbert tells the documentary interviewer, "because if you come to that conclusion -- and I'm sure it's the true conclusion -- then you have to do something about it."

Abdullah reminds me somehow of a guy by the name of Iftikhar Ahmed, who has recently been posting letters making outrageous demands on infidel nation states all over the internet blogs.

The claim that this or that Islamic sermon or text, ancient or modern, has been 'mistranslated' or 'misunderstood' or 'taken out of context' by the wicked, ignorant kafir, a claim made above by Abdullah Mikail in his wild critique of 'Obsession', is one of the most boringly predictable moves made by Muslim spin-doctors and taqiyya artists.

The point should be made that many Jews in Israel have either learnt Arabic from childhood - they are essentially bilingual - or come from families who originally lived, or, more correctly, endured, as dhimmis (that is: as victims of a religion-based apartheid, subjected to one of the cruellest and most thorough-going systems of oppression and humiliation ever devised by the darkened human heart) within the Arab Islamosphere, in places like Baghdad or Egypt or North Africa or Yemen.

Many of these people, now living in Israel, where they can tune in and absorb the Arabic-language media 24 hours a day, and have daily contact with Arabic speakers, know and speak Arabic just as well as do the Arab, or Arabised, Muslims. So, also, do Coptic Christians from Egypt, and Assyrian and Maronite Christians from Mesopotamia and from Lebanon. Or perhaps 'Abdullah' would like to impugn the Arabic language knowledge of persons such as Wafa Sultan and Nonie Darwish and Magdi Cristiano Allam, who were born and raised as native speakers of Arabic, and who are giving, to the kafir world, exactly the same warnings as are voiced in 'Obsession'?

A little more evidence that the anti-kafir Muslim hate speech documented within 'Obsession' is a fact.

Ms Darwish knows. She lived inside Arab Muslim society, for thirty years. I believe her when she tells me that she 'regularly heard cursing prayers' 'from the pulpits of mosques'.

Sounds like 'Obsession' is simply telling it like it is.

Islam is not a religion; it is a political-judicial-cultural ideology as defined by the quran, hadith and sira as implemented under sharia law. Islam replaces or subjugates anything non-Islamic. Wherever Islam grows, a state within a state develops and the existing government and unbelieving (kafir) culture is rejected. Again, an Islamic minority faction grows until it can conquer, by political or violent means, the established government.

The seed of this modern insurrection begins with a demand for deferential treatment of Islam, including insistence on religious accommodations, judicial separateness, and general cultural and educational non-integration. In addition, imagined affronts to Islam are claimed and redress demanded. Islam is oppressive, anti-women and discriminatory in practice, it restricts freedom of thought and action and thereby violates human rights. Muslim-Muslim relations are completely separate from Muslim-kafir relations, where deceit is common. Islam is incompatible with our values and sensibilities of freedom and secularism.

No matter the temperament of individual Muslims, the Islamic community as a whole drives the process of Islamization in every country where Islam thrives. There is no room to list the violent acts of Muslims against non-Muslims in the name of Islam. The U.S. under any form of Islamic control is the antithesis of our country's history and free thinking traditions and will suffocate future intellectual, cultural and artistic growth.

WAKE UP, learn. Islam conflicts with US freedom and equality.

And yet another piece of evidence that 'Obsession' provides a factual description of teachings and attitudes that exist - that, indeed, are quite common within the Islamosphere - the personal account of Tawfiq Hamid.

Tawfiq is still - as Magdi Allam tried to be, for quite some time - an identifying Muslim who claims to practise a peaceful or non-aggressive Islam. He did, however, despite having been raised by barely-observant Muslim-in-name-only secularised parents, come within an ace of turning into a full-on jihad warrior.

Pay particular attention to his description of his primary and secondary education; reflect on what he says he was taught in Islamic classes in school, and how the children from the more observant Muslim families treated the non-Muslims and the less-observant Muslims; note that they justified this behaviour by citing the Qur'an.

Note, too, his account of the preaching of Dr Ayman al-Zawahiri, whom he heard while he was at university; preaching given not in some hole in the corner to a few, but openly, in a mosque, week after week, to hundreds of people. The content of that preaching, as reported by Hamid, is EXACTLY the same as that of the sermons reported in 'Obsession'.

The reason why there is no positive coverage is because...

1) Hacks are rewarded for finding controversial stories of "injustice" and "bigotry"

2) Hacks are scared sh*tless of anything to remotely critical of Islam - i) because they might lose their jobs, ii) because Muslims might harass, injure or kill them or their families and iii) because journalists have to comply with the codes of journalism (which forbid racism, bigotry, etc.)

Hence, the only hacks whi have an incentive for writing something positive are those who hate their jobs, families or who secretly enjoy masachism.

The fact is - like everything else in our wonderful democracies - everything is geared in favour of the offended minority. It's just hat with Islam they are not really a minority, and they will never forget any offence.
