Nebraska Swift plant fires at least 86 over Ramadan demands

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Grand Island meatpacking plant fired at least 86 workers Friday after they walked off the job amid a dispute over prayers during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, company officials said.
But a Muslim leader and one of the fired workers said 150 Muslims lost their jobs.
JBS Swift & Co. spokeswoman Tamara Smid confirmed 86 firings late Friday, saying the employees were terminated earlier that day for repeatedly leaving work without authorization. She would not give any other details, including whether anyone else had been fired.
Mohamed Rage, who leads the Omaha Somali-American Community Organization, said 80 workers were thrown out after an altercation late Thursday. He says when they tried to return for their shift Friday, they were fired, along with 70 others.
Police said were called to the plant late Thursday amid reports of a riot or serious fight. But when officers arrived, the situation had calmed, said police Chief Steve Lamken.
Muslim workers — mostly of Somali background — have been asking for accommodations with break times to allow prayer at sunset. The issue led to walkouts this week — not only from Muslims but from non-Muslims who protested such accommodations as preferential treatment.
One of the Somali workers, Mohamed Farah, said some workers tried to take a break to pray Thursday around sunset. The break had been arranged with managers, Farah told The Associated Press, with Rage translating the conversation.
Farah said tension had been building in recent days with Latino workers, who started protesting when they saw the Muslim workers leaving for break. Farah said the Latino workers started shouting and beating on their tables.
Two women, one 19 and another in her 40s, and a 20-year-old man fainted during the commotion because they had gone so long without food, Farah said. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.
Dan Hoppes, president of Local 22 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, described what happened Thursday night differently than Rage and Farah did. He said that according to management and employees, 60 to 80 people quit late Thursday after raising the prayer issue and creating a commotion.
Hoppes said supervisors had told the workers to go back to work or leave and they left. Workers who walked off the job Monday and Tuesday in protest had to have known their leaving again would result in their termination, he said.
The plant employs about 2,500 people, not counting management. About a fifth of them are Muslim.
Tensions have also flared elsewhere, including Swift's plant in Greeley, Colo. More than 100 workers there were fired last week because the company said they walked away from work before their shifts ended.
Hoppes couldn't confirm the total number of workers affected Friday, but said he knew human resources representatives were posted at employee entrances to address workers.
"We don't have any clear cut information as to numbers or why they were terminated," he said. [...]

"JBS values its diverse workforce and has a long track record of making significant accommodations to employees," the statement said. "We work closely with all employees and union representation to accommodate religious practices in a reasonable, safe and fair manner."

Gosh, during one of these Muslim outreach programs that the government always seems to be pushing they should cut these guys a break and tell them that if they walk off the job, they will lose it. And then someone should tell the government that these guys walk off the job so that they will be fired, so CAIR can sue the company that fires them.

As far as fainting from lack of food, it's always been my understanding that if I do something that causes something else to happen,if there is an adverse reaction, or a good reaction for that matter, it is my responsibility. What ever happened to combing your hair and acting cheerful when you're fasting and not telling anybody about it? Oh, yeah, I guess that's in the Bible.

These are the elements in the article that stood out, to me.

Note that the Muslim gang boss says the Latino workers created the 'commotion' whereas the non-Muslim union leader says that the Muslims were the ones 'creating a commotion'.

So: once again we have a critical contradiction between the Muslim version and the non-Muslim version of events. Who do we believe, ladies and gentlemen?

Me, I'm inclined to believe the non-Muslim union leader and the non-Muslim company rep.

Why? Because the Muslims are steeped in a cultural mindset founded by a man who said, 'War is deception', and that permits them to lie in order to get the drop on non-Muslims or to make Islam look good.

This dispute at Swift is a war by any other name - a war on the factory floor, a war to impose the law of Islam on previously non-Islamic turf.

There are 500 Muslims; there are 2000 non-Muslims. The 500 Muslims - 1/5th of the workforce, i.e. 20 % - are attempting to dominate. Until the non-Muslims jacked up, the Muslims were quite prepared to force the other workers to work more and longer in order to make up for what they (the Muslims) were not doing; and had disrupted the non-Muslims' work schedules.

If I were a CEO in charge of Swift I would not hire one single Muslim ever again, and I would replace all fired Muslims, with non-Muslims.

If I were a non-Muslim worker at Swift - and especially if I were Dan Hoppes - I would be getting to work to secretly record, via hidden camera or suchlike, the conduct and words of the Muslims in the workplace, in any argument or 'commotion'.

Because you can bet your bottom dollar that they [the Muslims] will lie through their teeth, with utter conviction, with tears rolling down their cheeks, if it ever comes to a court case.

Might be an idea to send the local papers in Grand Island a few letters to the editor discussing the concepts of
1. 'War is deception' and the Permission to Lie in Time of War, or to protect Islam
2. Al-taqiyya and kitman - provide link to relevant articles at this website or at Ali Sina
3. quote the passages from 'PIG to Islam and the Crusades', and from 'Truth About Mohammed', where Spencer discusses the raid at Nakhla and the codifying of the principle that whatever advances Islam (i.e. the temporal power of Muslims) is Good, and whatever harms Islam (i.e. whatever diminishes Muslim power and profit) is Bad; that is, the definition of ultimate Good is - whatever suits Islam/ Muslims.

This is where the rubber hits the road.

So now these Somali workers are unemployed. Will they find another gainful employment straightaway or languish on government handouts for the foreseeable future? Who will give them a reference and what will they say when asked by any potential employer why they left their previous job? Will they make the same demands of their future employers?

NO special accommodations, ever, for Muslims. One accommodation begets another, then another, then it's the slippery slope from there. This fits the pattern that is apparent in many other countries in the world. Once enough Muslims group together, the ideology begins to trigger problems, then violence. Certain aspects of Islam MUST change. The world will not be rid of these issues until these changes are adopted worldwide. This will require open, offensive warfare.

Once again, if the managers of the Nebraska plant and been informed about the events at the Colorado plant, this whole controversy could have been avoided. As it is, Swift will probably lose at both locations in the impending lawsuits for breach of contract.

What we are witnessing are the reasons why islam stagnates countries. Their work ethics are not there.

The thing that bothers me about these morons - are they future welfare pukes? If they cannot work because they cannot adopt - they really do need to be exported. I don't like knee jerk reactions to 'just send them back', or those kinds of rants, but we don't need more able bodied welfare recipients.

Islamizing American industries is ultimately a lost cause for the Umma, the Ikhwan, and their allies. Any court rulings in their favor are likely to be Pyrrhic victories. Backlash, Muslim surlyness and nonproductivity will squeeze Muslims out of the workforce. They would be better off in Socialized Europe, where subsidized, nonproductive religiosity might be tolerated. Let them go to Sweden.

Problems started Monday at Swift when some 300 muslim employees walked off the job after not being allowed to pray. The workers wanted the time to pray during the holy month of ramadan. The company agreed to switch around break times to accomodate the muslim prayer. That angered other workers who claimed the switch took time and money from their paychecks. Hundreds of those employees then walked off the job in a counter protest. Swift sided with those workers and switched breaks back to their original schedule yesterday.

They are a result of ill-conceived immigration policies beginning 40 years ago. This was a scheme originating with liberal Democrats including Ted Kennedy. In recent years cheap labor lobby Republicans, such as Bush and McCain have latched onto this policy. A sane country would ship the fired cohort and their relatives back to Somalia. Instead they will end up leeching off of the American taxpayers on welfare.

I am in full accord with what you say but we have a problem.

Swift values its "diverse" workforce. They're likely to hire more Muslims in an effort to prove to themselves and to CAIR that the Somalis were just bad apples.
If Swift's hiring practices resulted in Muslims being consistently turned down for employment then the Justice Department or the EEOC could bring action against SWIFT.
There are also oodles of civil rights lawyers who would salivate at the prospect of taking the Somalis' case and showing that Swift failed to make "reasonable" accommodations.
Before you know it, shift times or durations will be modified to allow Muslims to fulfill their religious obligations. Everyone will have the same hours, in order to avoid any hint of favoritism. It will just be a coincidence that those are the hours most favorable to the practice of Islam.

You want to come here? Fine, you are welcome. But you must accommodate yourself to OUR system, to OUR beliefs. If this bothers you, by all means, keep moving to some other nation. It is wrong to expect us to contort ourselves to accommodate immigrants' beliefs and practices.

All of these instances (Minneapolis Cabbies, footbaths, demands for preferential religious accommodation at work, etc.) need to be a part of a possible national dialogue about Islam in America.

But before most of our elected officials will address the issue in public, Ma and Pa America needs to know what Islam really teaches and they need to understand that Islamic ideology differs so substantially from our own that it actually conflicts with our Constitution and relevant American laws.

That should be Muslim prayers, plural. They make it sound like once a shift, the Muslims wanted to take two minutes to say a prayer, when, after proper 'wudu', it would have taken considerably more time, and have been multiple events.

The real workers "claimed" it would take time and money from their paychecks?

"CLAIMED"? This is hardly a mathematical theorum which requires ten blackboards and thirty pounds of chalk, to prove. All it takes is a damned calculator and two minutes, if that long!

And the company "sided" with "those workers"? Well, yeah--Because they found they weren't going to get away with it, not because they were biased in favor of the real workers.

On the contrary, this began in a company bias toward the Muslims, for the sake of its "diversity" image.

In addition to the subject of Islam, this is also a matter of property/ownership/contractual rights, which have been curtailed severely in the past several decades.
Bottom line: if the Islamists want their own prayer rights, start their own company.

In theory, not possible in the United States though there are a growing number of cases where corporations are pandering to the Muslim "culture" at the expense of the non-muslim majority. If memory serves me right, and anyone please remind us of the exact details if I get it wrong here, there was a case in Florida where a muslim owned company forbade the consumption of non-halal food in the employee lunch room that resulted in a non-muslim getting fired because she ate a piece of pepperoni pizza on her lunch break.

The Muslims who left their stations without authorization, abandoned their jobs. The company has every right to lock them out and fire them as their union head noted. The Muslims having quit their jobs are not eligible for unemployment. As refugees they are not supposed to be eligible for welfare as refugees are not to become a burden on the American taxpayer.Even if they were eligible for welfare, welfare is now tied to work and is time limited. I think the best solution is to deport undesirables back to their home countries (as has happened before) or to any Islamic country that will have them.

I do know that in Orthodox Jewish nursing homes employees are not allowed to bring non-Kosher food onto the premises. Kosher meals are supplied to employees by the Nursing home. Of course potential employees know of these restrictions and can choose not to work at a Orthodox nursing home. In contrast Somali Muslims are accepting jobs knowing that they will not be able to complete their evening prayer. The Muslims also seek religious "accommodation" at the expense of the non-Muslim employees who are not only inconvenienced but lose 0.7 hours each day in wages.That is a clear violation of Federal law as religious "accommodation" can not be at the expense of other employees.

There is something wonderfully Machiavellian about what Swift's management did. We all know that companies will find a way to get rid of problem employees which is what the Somali Muslims had become.It seems to me that Swift had grown tired of the Muslims and their demands and that they managed to turn all of the other employees against them. It was other employees who reported the Muslims when they abandoned their posts and their union rep has contradicted them saying the Muslims quit and were not fired.

What are the odds that Muslim employees at Swift are NOT adulterating some of the food they handle, out of spite and righteous rage? Conclusion: Don't buy Swift products, even if the company finds a compromise solution that all sides accept. Let Swift learn, from a decline in its profit, that the prayer-accommodation problem is secondary to the primary problem: the employment of those Somalis in the first place. Moreover, we may be sure that Swift's competitors are watching this episode, with an eye to their own bottom line.

I noticed that Dan Hoppes had said something much different than the S(ob)omalis. He has positioned the union as not representing these workers. This is good because he see's something that can't be seen on the face of it. My guess is that he wishes the union to be seen as having no part of this beyond "reasonable accommodations" for the prayer time.

First off I don't buy that anyone fainted. Going without food for roughly 12 hours is not going to induce one to faint. And since this is a meat processing plant, it isn't 100 degrees. I do believe they are allowed to drink water, so dehydration isn't a problem. If they choose not to drink, so sad, too bad, you cad. There has been ample evidence that the body can go without food for a heck of a lot longer than the mere 12 hours the muslims go through. Water is the critical issue. So, there was no fainting, in the true sense. I wouldn't doubt some acting, but nothing real.

Overall this whole deal is a bunch of crapola. These problems with the Somali muslims is clearly a case of unintended consequences. I wish our government and charities were more cognizant of thinking before acting. Maybe I am asking too much.

The September issue of the The Reader's Digest, in a story on "hats", includes a ditty on a hijabed girl in Turkey who is shown protesting the secular government's ban on religious headscarves at universities. Her pluck (as Hugh would say) is subtly extolled, and of course we Westerners are admonished (via a quoted adult), "They're better off honoring a woman's right to choose than trying to impose their prejudices on Muslims."

Drip. Drip. Drip.

One could go on and on (there should be a repository on DW for these "little signs" in American life) noting these things, should one be so inclinded.

It is not a hopeful conversation we're having.

I live in Omaha and had no clue we even had such a group as the Somali-American Community Organization.

I'll have to keep an eye on that.

You can absolutely selecively discriminate against Muslims, particularly FOB from Somalia Muslims, not on the basis of their fascist cult affiliation, but on the basis of who they are and their background. You can ask them in job interviews whether they unconditionally accept the terms of their employment and if they don't, or if their actions contradict their pledge after having been hired...the boot. You can cite a lack of references or legitimate work experience. You can ask them if they unconditionally respect the authority of female and homosexual superiors and the equality of their female and homosexual counterparts to the extent that they will unconditionally treat them with civility and if they don't...the boot. You can refuse to hire anyone for any job if they don't have a high school diploma, if they have an Islamic school diploma (i.e., they studied only language (useless, unproductive, phonetically violent Arabic), math, and the Koran), or if they were educated in the 3rd World period. You can refuse to hire someone who doesn't speak English as this burdens the employer. You can fire anyone who demonstrates insubordination. There are lots of legitimate ways of keeping monsters like these out of the workforce and for weeding them out once they infiltrate it. Note that Mexicans meet any of the expected criteria: respect for others, for superiors, for women and gays, legitimate education (a Mexican 1st-grade education or even home-schooling trumps a PhD from anywhere in the Muslim world any day - they know the Earth is round), and they pick up English quickly and if they don't there's always a bilingual around so it doesn't burden the employer. You can refuse to hire someone for having a slovenly appearance or for being so stupid that they think the earth is flat and that the sun sets in a muddy puddle after revolving around the earth all day. There really is absolutely no reason to hire people like this for any job under any circumstances.

So now these Somali workers are unemployed. Will they find another gainful employment straightaway or languish on government handouts for the foreseeable future? Who will give them a reference and what will they say when asked by any potential employer why they left their previous job? Will they make the same demands of their future employers?

You know who will find them jobs. The same people who lobbied to bring them here, to settle them in a town, and for Swift to hire them: the Muslim Brotherhood by way of front organizations like the Somali-American Community Organization, which are front organizations for the Ikhwan's front organizations. They are a tribal cult. That's why they stick together as a tribe and all move on together, and always have a leader or a system of leaders, 'elders' who tell them where to go and what to do so the little sheep don't walk right off the edge of the mountain. If 150 or 80 of them leave, they all leave. Mark my word. We'll be hearing another report like this in a year and it will be the same people. And they're not hired as individuals. These 'elders' and their Muslim Brotherhood labor-union go-betweens get them hired en masse. They probably make up new identities every time they move. They did it the first time back in Somalia to get moved to Kenya, then they most likely came here by scamming the US by claiming to have been enslaved even though the only slaves in Kenya are Bantus. Somalis are notorious for pulling that crap, and it's not like they ever have any new tricks up their sleeves.

And Trollhammer, the Mexicans apparently, by the sound of the report, comprise 80% of the plant's employees. I can guarantee you they would mind the job far less if they didn't have to work with Somalis.

I've been expected to work too many Good Fridays, Easters and Christmases to have the least bit of sympathy for anyone over Ramadan. When my company allows me to pray Matins, Prime, Sext, Nones, Vespers, and Compline I then will feel the need to defend the right of Muslims to pray during work.

Keep on firing the rest of the tribe. please and send all of them back to their country where they will be able to work and pray when they feel like it.

The Employee has the right to take a job that does not conflict with their Religious belief.

The Employee does not have the right to take a Job and force the Employer to comply with it.

Swift should be pro-active in denying these people unemployment benefits.

I can't help but wonder if they prayed before their riot. Poor dears were dropping like flies from hunger but when they didn't get their prayer break, they had enough stamina to wreak havoc on company property. It's obvious that these people are schooled in histrionics, a useful talent when combined with their innate islamic deceit and fanatacism. I'm guessing that Swift curses the day they hired them, probably under immense pressure.

I go without food many days from the time I get up in the morning until dinner around seven. I often work in my yard all day in the Georgia heat and humidity and I have never fainted or even come close to it. Muslims are lazy and irresponsible when it comes to work. They reserve all of their energy and enthusiasm for islam because after all, it pays the bills and puts food on table. Allah wouldn't want his "best of people" working in an infidel factory that won't conform to the islamic schedule. Better they should just demand their rightful jizya, let the "leaders" handle the law suits to fatten C.A.I.R.'s bank account, and amuse themselves mutilating the genitals of their prepubescent girls on their kitchen tables.

First off, Islam is a complete political doctrine & should NOT get any religious freedoms that are given to other religions. Best though if ALL three of the desert dogma's with their "death" god is put on the book shelf with old Greek myths & retired.

One would think that Somalians would be grateful to America for giving them a new start. Their lives could hardly have been easy groveling in the dust of a war zone.
To echo many others, perhaps it is time that food producers should re-think their policy of employing Muslims because of the threat of product contamination during processing. Cheap Somalian labour could become very expensive in the long run.

This is very different from seeing a Muslim name on a job application and automatically setting it aside. If they tell you they accept the terms then you hire them. Their actions later might expose them to being fired but that isn't the issue upfront.

Then how do they justify hiring the Mexican immigrants, many of whom don't speak English, and not hiring the Muslims? Both were educated in the third world. Hire one and not the other? It's discrimination.

Same as above. If this is your justification for not hiring someone then you can't hire Mexican immigrants and not Muslim immigrants.

Nothing STOPS you from doing it but just remember it opens you up to charges of discrimination. You are interviewing two employees who have similar life, education and work experience and you consistently choose one group over the other. There has to be a justifiable reason. It's not here.

When muslims fast for Ramadam, they do not drink water during the fast. Some won't even swallow their spit. That is why some are weak near the end of the fast. Which is a good reason not to hire muslims. What if they fainted on the production line?

They get hired because they have 'leaders' who tell them exactly what to say to get hired.

Why don't they leave Somolia and go to a country nearby? Because there are people over there promising them a better life in the US.

And how do they get to the US in the first place? The Catholic Charities is the biggest importer. Followed by other Christian organizations trying to save the world.
