As Raymond stated regarding the Barbary Pirates. A former president of the United State (Jefferson) had dealings with these jihads. The Marine Corp anthem references to Tripoli. This is were the Barbary pirates hid out.

The Russians aren't likely to take prisoners. The 30mm CIWS systems on the Russian 1154 class frigate would make styrofoam popcorn of the whaler in about three seconds...and shark bait of the crew. Additionally, the heavily armed Ka-26 helicopter is one of the toughest in anyone's navy. Yep, the pirates better hope the Russians don't see them.

As a follow up to any pirate attack, a visit and a few loosed broadsides of heavy caliber guns into the pirate's port is bound to get someone's attention.

The patrol ship hardly needs such armament to take down this dingy - a hand grenade would do the trick.

Wonder how long befor the Ruskies have some sort of drone follow their ships and end this pirate garbage.

Yes, Russia will blow the sh*t out of some pirates, and nobody will say a word.

With all due respect to the folks and circumstances involved, these "pirates" appear to be in rowboats and armed with pointed sticks. Their armor consists of castoff hoodies and surfer shorts.

If a merchant ship can't deal with this level of threat, then a reassessment of defenses (and, perhaps, the crew's testosterone levels) is obviously necessary.

Marwan'sDaughter - I think those sticks are rocket launchers, especially the guy in front. Not big enough to sink a merchant ship but enough to make some merchant captains raise their hands if they are not armed.

I am a little skeptical of the Russians as Pax Russiana - is this ship loaded with electronics? Could be a southern listening post to watch Israel.

those are international waters, Russian military ships routinely ply those waters as do military ships of the USA, UK, France, Italy, and many other countries...spy/surveillance ships have been there for many years...and all are aware of what goes on in the Middle East...the Middle East is one of the most heavily monitored areas on the planet..monitored on land, sea, and air..

but so for, despite everyones awareness of the pirates, no one has taken any real action...it is time to start sinking armed pirate boats...yo ho ho and bottle of rum...

I assume none of these pirates is anywhere near as hot as Johnny Depp. Bring on Captain Jack Sparrow!

Piracy and hostage taking are becoming quite frequent and also profitable in the Islamic world. The Somali pirates are getting bolder and more numerous. And their demands for $$$$ are being met. Also take a look at other kidnappings that have taken place in Islamic lands and you will see that hostage taking for the purpose of extracting ransom is a profitable enterprise. How many $millions are being demanded, offered, and paid? Austria is about to pay 5 million plus Euros for the return of the two Austrians taken in North Africa several months ago. The Muslims captured some more Westerners in Egypt recently. How much is the West going to pay for their return? This is a growing trend and is being encouraged by a politically weak West. It seems we never learn from our history. All of this is not new. They had taken place in the not too distant past. And we have recorded history to show us the consequences. Yet we continue to make the same errors that have proved disastrous.

Finally, an appropriate outlet for Russian aggression. I hope they decimate the poor bastards.

I wrote how both Russia and the US aided jihad against Israel and each other and were punished for that. But then came the peculiar case of Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev ... .
How big an opportunity presented Gorbachev for the West? In a word: unlimited. The chance to break the vicious cycle of Cantacuzening the Global Jihad against each other. The chance to forge a full alliance with each other and Israel against the Global Jihad. The chance to save the civilized humanity. Not only did the US miss this opportunity, but it had deliberately and maliciously destroyed it. Which brings me to:

THE TIMELINE OF AMERICAN PERFIDITY:

March 1985: Gorby takes power. Being a good man, he did not want to oppress people, so he started the liberalization of the Soviet Union, without intent to abolish it. What he did not foresee was that if you start loosening up a state based on oppression, the whole thing comes apart. Many non-Russian republics that were part of the USSR did not want to be associated with Russia, and as soon as the brutality and fear were removed, began the drive for independence, which eventually led to the dissolution of the Soviet bloc, and then the Soviet Union itself. Were it not Gorby, but a typical dour Soviet Communist apparatchik, the same old totalitarian Soviet Union would be still around today, unchanged. Why does Communism still thrive in Cuba? Simple: Fidel Castro had politely but firmly turned down his Companero Gorbachev's call to follow his example and do perestroika and glasnost in Cuba.
But Gorby deserves credit for taking the risks and making an effort to do the right thing and give his people more freedom. I was an anti-Communist then, and was pleasantly surprised that such a good man rose to the top through the Communist party system. I appreciated that, but the powers-that-be in the US did not.
He also wanted to end the bloodshed in Afghanistan and pull the Soviet troops out but without letting jihadists take over, so he sought cooperation of the US in stopping jihad and reaching a peaceful settlement there, with a relatively civilized, non-jihad government. In turn, he was ready to form a joint front with the US against all jihad: Palestinian, Lebanese, Iranian. Everything was possible. Everything. And yet, the sociopaths dominating the US government ruined it all.
It just so happened that at that very time, March 1985, a top-secret plan was adopted by Reagan administration, National Security Decision Directive 166 on sharply escalating the Afghanistan jihad but behind the multiple layers of deniability.
1986: Early that year, Gorbachev publicly calls Afghanistan "a bleeding wound" hinting at his interest to end the war. This has greatly emboldened the US sociopaths, for to them it was proof that Gorby was a "softie". Far from appreciating his good will and seeking cooperation with him, this encouraged the US to throw away "deniability" and openly supply the jihadists with advanced American weaponry. On Sep. 26, 1986, the US Stinger anti-aircraft missles make their debut shooting down 3 Russian helicopters. It was that time that the US began losing its fear of the Soviet Union. Suddenly, US officials were giddy with grand Jihad Nach Norden strategy of spreading jihad into the Muslim-populated Central Asia republics of the Soviet Union itself. This was to become a pattern: the friendlier Gorby was to the US, the more uncompromising and bellicose toward Russia the US officials became. The prospect of getting the bragging rights for "defeating the Soviet Union" was too irresistable to their egoes. And yet, Gorby tried. On Nov. 13, 1986, at a secret Politburo meeting, Gorbachev announced his decision to end the war. Next month, he opened first direct diplomatic contacts with the US seeking its cooperation on stopping jihad and installing a peaceful neutral government in Afghanistan. To his dismay, he got none.
1987: Instead of cooperation, the US got the Jihad Nach Norden going. On the CIA request, the Pakistani ISI sent 3 teams of jihadists accross the border into the Soviet Union in April to ambush motorists on a highway and rocket a factory killing scores of Soviet citizens. This was too much even for Gorby. He sent stark notes to both Pakistan and the US threatening to invade Pakistan. The first tough talk from Gorby, and it worked. The Jihad Nach Norden plan was shelved, but not discarded. And yet, Gorby soon returned to his paceful overtures toward the US. In September, his Foreign Minister Shevardnadze told the US Secretary of State George Shultz that a decision has been made by the Soviet government to pull out of Afghanistan and again pleaded for the US to stop arming jihad and help in peaceful settlement there. By then, however, the Reagan cult was so emboldened by Gorby's very "softness" that it became totally uncompromising. Anyone who would even suggest cooperating with the Russians on anything, was sure to be branded an "appeaser".
On Dec. 4, 1987, the KGB Director Vladimir Kryuchkov dined with his CIA counterpart Robert Gates in a fancy Wash. DC bistro Maison Blanche, and again proposed joint front against all jihadists, Afghan or Iranian. Gates smugly ignored the plea.
The Russians are long gone from Afghanistan, but guess who is stuck there? Robert Gates.

The only reason these raggedy-arsed third worlders are still afloat is the West's lack of will. Go, Putin Go!
