Mr Thompson said: "My view is that there is a difference between the position of Christianity, which I believe should be central to the BBC's religion coverage and widely respected and followed.
"What Christian identity feels like it is about to the broad population is a little bit different to people for whom their religion is also associated with an ethnic identity which has not been fully integrated.
"There's no reason why any religion should be immune from discussion, but I don't want to say that all religions are the same. To be a minority I think puts a slightly different outlook on it."...

That's the key. Muslims are a protected class due to their perceived status of "the other" in a post-colonial guilt ridden western society. They are the new proletariat. The left-wing media's duty is to afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.

I have some advice for you, and for all public officials, police officers, politicians, journalists, and leaders of every description, throughout the free non-Muslim world.
This advice and counsel first saw the light of day in the English-language North China Herald, 1867, at a time when Muslims in western and south-western China were rising up in violent Jihad. I have re-posted it many times before, on this site, after another poster - unicorns2000 - brought it to the attention of jihadwatchers on 16.1.2005.
It is not novel advice. Any teacher or pupil who has ever had to deal with a bully will comprehend it instantly.

'Politeness and ceremony' are very obviously encouraging a great many Muslims, currently installed within kafir lands, to behave with sneering arrogance and ever-increasing aggression; all the while whingeing, squawking and howling, and ratcheting up their incessant cries of gimme gimme gimme.
Time for them to start slamming up against granite walls of 'severity and rudeness'.

One wonders if Mr Thompson is naive enough to actually believe that the special privileges he wishes to confer upon Islam for its status as a minority faith will be automatically terminated once Muslims are in the majority.
This is precisely the problem with liberal thought today. It is not based on reasoned principals or logical precepts. It is based on groups. The "right" thing to do depends on what group the person in question is a member of.
Strangely enough, the Arab tribalism of the 7th century works the same way. Its as if the liberals and the Arabs have brought us all full-circle.
