This reminds me of a line from Ayaan Hirsi Ali's "Infidel". When she lived in Saudi Arabia, people would blame the Jews for everything, even when the air-conditioning wasn't working.

I'm pretty surprised he said Jews. Many people nowadays say "Zionists" which is a code word for the Jews anyway. In fact, for all of you Aussies who read this site, the other night I was out in Sydney. My two friends and I caught a cab to a bar. We started talking with the cab driver who turned out to be Jordanian, so we naturally asked his opinion on what was happening over there.
He proceeded to say that the Jews wanted peace, but the "Zionists" didn't and that the Jordanian government had been pressured by the "Zionists" and the American government to enter into a peace agreement with Israel.
This vile view comes from a Jordanian cab driver in Sydney. I hate to think what it's like in the Middle East.

I find this psychology so confusing. You can be proud of your fellow Muslims for committing terrorist acts, and at the same time fully believe that the acts are an American-Jewish conspiracy. Reminds me of comments at the Guardian whenever the lastest anti-Syrian pol or journalist is assassinated in Lebanon; the Muslims and the Lefties insist it is a CIA/Mossad operation designed to discredit Syria. It's a sign of respect for the Almighty. I was writing about my Jewish friends at work in my post today and Jews don't fully spell out the Hebrew word for the Almighty, which is Yahw-h, the letter E purposely omitted again out of respect for the Almighty and that is why the "o" letter is left by Jews out of the word G-d, again out of respect. As for conspiracy theories, our government brings numerous cases against people for things such as conspiracy to murder or conspiracy to sell drugs, or conspiracy to defraud investors. So I do not automatically hear the word conspiracy and pretend that it is a nut job saying it.
What empowers those who come up with all sorts of conspiracy theories that are generally held to be irrational are secrecy and alienation. Secrecy is held to be important in a world where enemies are rife, our CIA does not operate transparently, though congress is supposed to have oversight in order to check natural human impulses to nefariousness.
Our elected leaders operate under a framework of transparency, which when meetings are held out of sight of the press or public scrutiny conspiracy theories are bound to arise. Such as when world leaders meet in secret and hobnob together as some sort of cult rather than acting as representatives of their respective nations.
We know from court cases and surveillance tapes that gang leaders will conspire to sell drugs or murder some rival gang members, they do this to gain the advantages of money, power or control. But when it comes to issues having to do with much more power money and control, those of the state which can bring much more force than some innercity gang can bring and can have immensely larger payouts it becomes all the more important that those institutions of government and commerce bring a greater measure of transparency.
