Or, from an Islamic perspective, jizya: "Payment to Afghan Governor's family part of bid to win 'hearts and minds,'" from ABC News, October 23 (thanks to Dumbledoresarmy):
Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon says the ex gratia payment to the family of a dead Afghan Governor is part of the overall approach to the war in Afghanistan. In other words, when the Muslims of Afghanistan get cash and comfort, they will no longer care about Islam, its sharia, and jihad in the path of Allah. Perhaps. Or perhaps that will only reinforce the Muslim perception that Westerners are godless people who worship money and more than ever in need of being subjugated. The Government will make a payment to the family of the Chora district Governor Rozi Khan, who is believed to have been accidentally killed by Australian soldiers during a battle with enemy forces.
Mr Fitzgibbon says the investigation into the death is not finished but it is important to make the act of grace payment.
"The project is largely about winning the hearts and minds of the local people," he said.
"We will be successful in Afghanistan when we convince the majority of Afghans that the democratic social and economic system we are offering is better than anything being offered by any other group.
"Payments like this are very important in terms of making progress in that regard."
It's pretty hard to win the hearts of the heartless and the minds of the mindless no matter how much money you try to bribe them with. Hasn't history taught our so called leaders anything by now?
I will call Allah off, if you send me enough money.
You notice no amount of money was mentioned, that's to allow for numerous raises in the future...
Yes our leaders are that stupid.
You think it's bad now?
Barack Obama considers Afghanistan to be the primary front in the "war on terror". What would that mean? He would send a couple more divisions of troops--and more money. He has pledged that, if elected, he would send *much, much more* money.
My fellow Australians -
It appears that whoever has the job of advising the Foreign Minister (and it is probably exactly the same person, or persons, within our Foreign Affairs department, as advised the previous Foreign Minister) has completely failed to provide any real information about Islam; information that is probably the most vital information that, today, any Foreign Minister in any kafir country needs to have.
I know for a fact that at least one person in Foreign Affairs - the chap in charge of the Middle East desk - either truly does not know, or pretends not to know, that Ahmadinejad's threats against Israel are firmly grounded in Islam's home-grown and hideous antisemitism; rather, he [the public servant in question] blandly asserts that those threats 'have nothing to do with Islam'.
If such invincible, grossly culpable ignorance is typical of the current set of Australian public servants who have the job of providing information and advice about the Arabised/ Islamised world, then our politicians, of whichever party, who ask them for briefings, are flying blind - deaf, dumb, and blind.
All we citizens can do, is try to make up for that, by telling Mr Fitzgibbon, loud and clear, exactly what jizya is, and why it is that money given, by non-Muslims, to Muslims, will be received in exactly one way - as Tribute to which they, the lordly Muslims, feel totally entitled. And for which they will not exhibit the tiniest shred of gratitude. And which will only whet their appetite for more! more! more, you Infidel Dogs!!
Send him an email with the truth; follow it up with a written, signed letter. At the same time, send almost exactly the same letter, with the same information, the same definition of jizya and explanation of the absolute futility of all Infidel attempts to buy Muslim Love, to his Shadow on the Opposition Bench.
Similar letters to the Minister for Defence - and Shadow, and to the Treasurer - and his Shadow; and to the PM and the Leader of the Opposition, would be an excellent idea.
Fill their in-trays, both electronic and actual, to overflowing.

Here you go, an interview from last year with Dr. Brendan Nelson (former Minister for Defense in the Howard Gov't and then fallguy Opposition Leader) and then current Defense Minister Joel Fitzgibbon.
As for our Foreign Minister, Stephen Smith takes second place to Kevin747.

There are many, many ways and examples in which the Labor Party makes accommodations to Islam and I will be the first to repudiate them for it.
This particular payment, however, was not one of them. It is quite common practice on operations in this part of the world to pay blood money to the family of one who is killed who is not explicitly the enemy. The fact that he was a governor is paramount. The blood money was paid for tribal reasons, not as jizya, and yes I do know quite a lot about the subject.
I am dreadfully fearful of the threat of the imposition, however gradually, of sharia in our society. I have a very young daughter for whom I have particular concerns.
But there are many other actions and personalities against which and whom to direct hostile comments. In particular, Mr Ferguson's having invited the most dangerous man in the world, Tariq Ramadan, to speak at Griffith University (who receives and seeks more Saudi funding, agreeing to implement their agenda), or Kevin Rudd's overtures to regional Islamists, feigning ignorance of the whole issue of the Amahdis in Indonesia.
Let's keep the focus on direct threats to our way of life, rather than reading too much into some acts. It's not as if we don't have enough material...
