Jihadist who declared the "time for jihad is now" and wanted to "smoke a judge," declared at his recent sentencing that "he no longer believes in violent jihad and has 'adopted more positive Muslim beliefs.'" Now he is the imam of the Muslim prison population. More on this story.
"Monitoring Lawful Jihad In Prisons," by Supna Zaidi for Europe News, October 7:
24-year-old Derrick Shareef was sentenced yesterday to 35 years in prison for planning a terrorist attack on a Chicago mall using hand grenades two years ago.Indeed, just because the word "positive" connotes all sorts of fuzzy, happy things in the West, does not mean that there is anything "positive" in the phrase "positive Muslim beliefs."At sentencing, Shareef declared that he no longer believes in violent jihad and has "adopted more positive Muslim beliefs." "What these positive beliefs are should be a central concern to the Metropolitan Correctional Center since his attorney cited his rise as the Imam of the Muslim population while interred there.
In 2005, then FBI Director Robert Mueller stated, "Prisons continue to be fertile ground for extremists who exploit both a prisoner's conversion to Islam while still in prison, as well as their socio-economic status and placement in the community upon their release."As an Imam, Shareef is technically taking on the role of a Chaplain, though it does not seem likely that he applied for such a position given its requirements, including but not limited to a Master of Divinity degree or its equivalent and at least two years of "autonomous experience…in a parish or specialized ministry setting." Shareef was arrested at 22.
Indoctrination by Islamists in prisons is a real threat to democracy and remains a prime example of lawful jihad in America.
"positive Muslim beliefs."
Okay, I am drawing a blank here. I'm sure that if I spend enough time thinking about it, I can come up with something.
I know! Sometimes, jihadis go for days without killing an infidel.
simple. you treat all muslims like they were on death row. (they should be anyway) if they want to talk to anybody they have themselves to talk to.

Remember Alcatraz? We need a Muslim version of the prison for "the worst of the worst".
To show our open-mindedness, they can have halal food and their own korans and they can hear the call to prayer five times a day and have arrows pointing the way to Mecca.
The difference between this and Gitmo will be that no inspections will be done with gloved hands. These people are prisoners, not guests.
Here's another thing I've been concerned about with prison Da'wa--is it looked at as a "positive" thing by prison heads and parole boards?
Here's why I ask--attending Christian church services (along with other voluntary programs such as AA or NA or getting one's GED) is often considered a somewhat mitigating factor.
When my brother was in prison this was well known--so well known that many prisoners who had no actual interest in church often attended because they knew it would "look good" to judges. Of course, judges and prison and jail officials knew this, and took sudden fervent conversions with a bit of salt. And, of course, even many heartfelt adopters of Christianity falter when back out on the street.
Still, this worked to the extent that it did because of an acknowledgement that prisoners who *genuinely* embraced the tenants of Christianity *were* less likely to reoffend.
So--my question is this--are converts to Islam looked upon in the same manner? My guess is that they are, due to the general trope that all religions are "positive" and tend to curb the prisoners likelyhood of committing crimes.
But here Christianity is fundamentally different from Islam--a person who considers themselves Christian is likely to at least feel some qualms on acting in a criminal manner. But with Islam the creed is very different, and allows for violence and theft if these acts are committed against Infidels--that is, most of the population of Western countries.
Do prisoners tend to get "time off for good behavior" by becoming Muslim--or, if Muslim, by becoming more fervent Muslims? This is a serious issue that I have never heard addressed.
'The Imam of Devils Island', a good title for a book.
How many Mohammadans are there in this prison?
What are the average ages?
Why would other Mohammadans, many more knowledge
in Islam than he, appoint him, or let him appoint himself, Imam?
Maybe its just notoriety...prisoners elevate notorious criminals.
Still, 'Imam of a prison' does look good on a resume...If you are applying for a jihadist position, or Imam in a mosque...prison experience counts in Islam...The longer a Mohammadan stays in prison, the more Imam he gets. Soon he may become a prison Ayatollah...or even a jail house Mufti.
Prisons should just be prisons. Religion should be kept out the same as a loaded gun is kept out.
Prisons should be a bleak place where offenders 'do' time.
They don't 'do' television, they don't 'do' radio, they don't 'do' drugs, they don't get to 'smoke any judges', and they don't 'do' religion.
They break rocks until they are released...that is the extent of their doing.
But liberals got into prisons with political and social engineering, where it became the States interest to worry about 'prisoners rights', especially where religion is concerned.
When Lincoln freed the slaves, he did not include prisoners, convicted of crimes, in prison.
A prison sentence imposed by the State, is slavery. But the corps of social engineers changed that...now convicted criminals are consider guests in a rehabilitation center...So Islam thrives behind bars...
Devils Island...'If you build it, they will come'...Guaranteed...
Oxymoronically, Shareef has said he wants to become an Islamic scholar.

Which is basically my point above. How can someone who 'wants to 'become', an Islamic scholar be an Imam? Because I want to become a doctor does not mean I am a doctor.
Shareef is just a good manipulator and they are letting him manipulate...
Duh,
Allow me take slight exception.
As I understand it, many Imams (prayer leaders in that regard) have no particular scholarly training.
I gathered that Shareef wants to take his jailhouse 'Imamship' up a notch and become a full-blown 'Islamic scholar'.
That given, I believe that he is indeed manipulative.
BTW: there's an informative PDF at the bottom of the Europe News article (pulished last month):

BLACK AMERICA, PRISONS AND RADICAL ISLAM
Can we please declare a moratorium on anything written by Supna Zaidi? Seriously. Especially after that piece on honor killings at Pajamas Media last week with interviews with the taqiyya-artist M. Zuhdi Jasser (with his name wrong, sans 'M.') and the clinically insane and shamelessly ignorant Irshad Manji which completely ignored Islamic texts, scholarship, and reality? I still subscribe to Islamist Watch for kicks because it cracks me up how everytime they send me a story it's something that I read elsewhere 2 weeks prior. They're just now getting around to writing a post about 9/11. Supna Zaidi is an asshat, and not even one who is able to represent her/him/whatever-self as reasonably intelligent or credible. Basta la Zaidi already. Seriously.

Of course they don't. That would require education, something Muslims are vehemently opposed to. It's not like Islam has the equivalent of divinity school, and certainly no at reputable institutions like Yale, where my uncle went to divinity school to dodge the draft. Madrassa training is a plus, so the less education you have the more qualified you are to be an imam. How many imams have you seen who didn't look like complete degenerates? Look at Qaradawi, a 'most reputable' Sunni imam, a shiek. If I saw him on the street I would clutch my mace and cross the street. Look at those imams in Undercover Mosque. Sheesh.
