3 years ago I visited Pakistan as a tourist. In Lahore, I got talking to a guy who I met outside the train station. This was during Ramadan, and he was hiding behind his car so he could eat without being noticed.

Anyway, we got talking about religion, and I explained to him about the child sex abuse scandals that had rocked the Catholic Church in Ireland, and how many people in Ireland had become disillusioned with the church.

He didn't seem surprised at all, and proceeded to explain to me that the mullahs and imams at the mosques in Pakistan and Afghanistan were pretty much all involved in child abuse - he even told me he had been abused as a child. He went on to explain that it was something that is never discussed openly in these countries, but everybody knows about it.

It's not really child abuse, they're simply looking at prospective wives.

Why would an Imam/Muslim see child abuse as paedophilia when Muhammad their beloved Holy Prophet was one? He saw nothing wrong with marrying a six year old and having sex with her when she was 9, even though he was no doubt having non penetrative sexual relations before that.

It's just a pity that the British Government and Media does not address this in their many articles on Islam, painting it as the Religion of Peace.

Why would the example of Muhammad, which has been reflected in the laws and customs by which Muslims live, not encourage sexual interest in girls as young as Aisha was when she "married" Muhammad? Wouldn't an observable absence of such sexual interest on the part of Muslims be harder to explain, than the presence of such interest? For if Muhammad is the most important figure in Islam, what he did, what he favored, matters. He is the model in all things.

Muhammad is first of all the warrior, in the mind's eye of Muslims (he cannot be depicted, though the Shi'a often break that prohibition), sword in hand, so very different from Jesus, who never touched a sword and would hold his hand skyward to make a point or illustrate a parable,and so very different from lawgiver Moses who strained to lift, never a weapon, but rather the Tables of the Law, so very different from The Buddha, who for his future statuary sat quietly in padmasana, his face reflecting a heavy-lidded internal peace.

The "source" of this comment is the one who is confused. It suggests that child porn is a product of or aspect of "Western decadence," which it's not, and that it's absent in Muslim cultures, which it's certainly not. It's a perversion that knows no national or cultural boundaries, though I dare say the rigid segregation of the sexes in fundamentalist Muslim culture, their obsessive sexual repression, and the tradition of their prophet himself encourage it.

There's no question that the vast majority of even "decadent" people consider child porn horrifying and unconscionable, so don't lay this on the doorstep of Western hedonism.

Khomeini did not "advocate sex with animals." He simply took that practice as a given, took it for granted, and was concerned with a different matter. After a man had taken his pleasure with this or that animal, that is had sexual intercourse with it, and then, afterwards, killed it (giving new meaning to the Latin phrase "post coitum omne animal triste"), and cooked its flesh, the question that Khomeini believed he needed to answer was: To whom was it Islamically licit to serve that meat?

And his answer was: Not to your own family. Not even to your neighbors who lived in the same village. But the meat could be served to villagers from another village.

Khomeini's guide to this, and to many other questions that bedevilled Muslims and requiring the answers of a learned theologian -- an Ayatollah! -- such as he, was published in Farsi and then, amazingly, in English, by his admirers, until they got wind of the mockery that readers of the English text, outside of Iran, were heaping on their beturbaned imperturbable hero. They promptly stopped the translation project of turning all of Khomeini's books into English.

To be precise, Muhammad reportedly married Ayesha when she was 6 or 7 (according to ahadith in Bukhari, Muslim, and others), and then he consummated the marriage when she was 9.

There is no strict lower age limit for marriageable brides in the Quran. Verse 65:4, dealing with divorce and marriage, refers to an iddah waiting period for females who have not yet menstruated (because they are immature). The verse is unclear in some translations, but a hadith that refers to the verse makes explicit mention of females who are immature.

There's nothing surprising about this. I just need to look at all the newsagents' shops around my home town in England that are run by "observant" Muslim families and yet sell the most obscene hard-core pornograpy (including gay pornography) as well as hard liquor and cigarettes. To sell or profit from any of these is supposedly "haram" in Islam. The whole religion stinks.
