New evidence of Iranian meddling in Iraq

Still working to create that Shi'ite client state.

"U.S. official has new evidence of Iranian meddling in Iraq," by Barbara Starr for CNN, October 14 (thanks to Jeffrey Imm):

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The United States has new intelligence indicating Iran is reorganizing in an effort to assert its influence inside Iraq and may be behind several recent attacks, according to a senior U.S. official who spoke with CNN Monday.

The information underscores a view by Gen. David Petraeus, who assumes command of U.S. Central Command later this month, and Gen. Raymond Odierno that progress in Iraq remains fragile and that it is too soon for a major additional U.S. troop drawdown.

The senior official, who asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the intelligence, said the U.S. military had recently arrested an Iraqi general who says he was paid by Iran to derail a pending agreement that would allow U.S. troops to remain in Iraq after the end of the year.

The general was arrested a few weeks ago at the Iranian border carrying large sums of cash, according to the source. The man has known ties to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the U.S. official said.

The United States believes the IRGC has ties to terrorist operations and Iran's programs to develop chemical and biological weapons....

The war in Iraq is by no means over. I would expect Iran to be involved in Afghanistan as well. It is good that we have bases on both sides of Iran if and when they develop nuclear weapons.

Shites in the woodpile............

An Iraqi general...Whooda thot it.

I mean if you can't trust an Iraqi general, what Iraqi can you trust?

Hasn't there already been enough evidence of Iranian meddling in Iraq? How much more do they need?
What difference will this new evidence make? None, as far as I can see.

This news is hardly surprising. Iran and Iraq are both Muslim states with a lot in common. We need a more holistic approach to the region, rather than committing troops indefinitely to particular countries.
For one thing, we need to acknowledge the basic threat of the Islamic supremacist ideology, in the same way we understood Communism. Then we will need to have a policy of minimizing weapons transfers to those countries, including pressure on suppliers like China and Russia. We will also want to emphasize sea and air power where we have an advantage. We may consider establishing Islamic free zones where non-Muslims and liberals from the region can seek refuge.
Ultimately, we should probably just take over all the region's oil fields as a means of bankrupting the jihad.
With awareness, and resolve, we can win in the true sense.

Nothing to worry about Folks. Hope and change is on the way.

jewdog...Do you think Obama has a plan along the lines of your suggestions? Being a militaristic guy, McCain might think of something like that, but I doubt it of Obama. He would rather appear in
Iran in a puff of smoke and lay some prophetic lines on them. And then disappear in a puff of smoke.

Apollonius of Tyana pulled a stunt like that in the Roman Senate. The Senate seating was like circular sport bleachers...Multi level.
He appeared out of nowhere, made a speech, and then disappeared in a puff of smoke.

Can we expect anything less from our fearless leader Obama if he does indeed get to be our fearless leader? The Iranians want him in office badly by most reports. I'm sure he will get a chance to 'talk' with them...I wonder if he will use the smoke trick...

Dears

The 2 main versions of Islam is Sunni and Shiite, most Shiite are loyal to Iran and love Iran, while Sunni’s loyal to arbs and especially to Saudi Arabia.

The Shiite who governs Iraq are raised and trained for years in Iran, how do you expect from them not to be loyal to Iran????

The biggest mistake that American did is to allow such parties who rose in Iran to come and rule Iraq. Iran is an enemy to American and to free world.

Most Arab countries do not like Iran because they think (the Iranian) they can restore their lost empire, and tries to dominate Arabs and tries to publish their version of Islam "Shiite".

Right now religious Shiite is ruling Iraq and they are favoring Iranian companies over and companies.
Indepented Shiite can rule Iraq and fight Iranian influence like aead alwee did “first prime minister”, Who lived in UK.
I lived in Iraq all my life and I do not expect that Iraq will raise with the current parties in the plays, All parties are not working for Iraq, they work for their parties.
Before 2003 iraq was living with only 4 billion dollar budget a year and now, the 2008 budget is 40 billion and they can’t repair electrical grid and many more.

Best regards
