Five men have been arrested under the Terrorism Act, police said.
The men, aged 29 to 36, were arrested on suspicion of being involved in the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism, West Midlands Police said.
Officers swooped on five residential addresses in Birmingham at about 6am on Tuesday.
A further two business properties were also searched following a "long and complex investigation" by the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit.
A police spokeswoman said the arrests were not related to any immediate plot or threat to public safety.
Officers later confirmed that the arrests took place at five addresses in the Sparkhill, Ward End, Hodge Hill, Bordesley Green and Aston areas of Birmingham.
The police spokeswoman said: "The properties are now being searched.
"As part of the investigation, a further residential address in Stechford, Birmingham, and two business properties in central Birmingham and Kenilworth, Warwickshire, are also being searched."
Police are not currently seeking anyone else in relation to the arrests.
The spokeswoman added: "The families of the men are being supported by specially trained officers, and key community leaders in the relevant areas have been contacted."
Sparkhill, Bordesley Green and Aston have large "Asian" populations - i.e. Pakistani immigrants.

The families of the men were likely aware of what they were doing, probably supported the plot(s), and will cry "victim" at any moment. But not to worry, they will be supported by the specially trained dhimmi cops and key muslim community leaders.

We should be grateful that the police don't yet have to ask permission before raiding Muslim terror suspects.
This is probably dancing on the edge of what will be tolerated on the site, at best, but here goes:
The families of these bottom feeders should be deported immediately and prohibited from coming back. And I mean their whole family, wives, kids, siblings, parents, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, the lot.
These people do not recognize individuals. They barely recognize the value to them of their own family. But at least some pressure will be brought to bear on them by frightened relatives that want to hold on to their comfy westernized lives.
The screaming will be deafening. The legal precedents will be toxic. But the problem will diminish rapidly.
And it would allow the authorities to say "abandon mohammedanism and you will leave the jurisdiction of collective justice and re-enter the jurisdiction of individual justice".
It would work.
It would, by any rational evaluation, run directly counter to all western notions of justice based on individual responsibility.
But the mohammedans have, as near as I can tell, no doctrinally supported universalist concept of individual responsibility. Only of collective justice and judgment.
Given the mohammedan mindset, it would work. And likely is the only thing that would work.

And yes - for me, too, the paragraph that stood out as though highlighted in bright yellow was the last one:

Suppose that, during WWII, five Nazi sympathisers had been arrested after it was discovered they were cooking up a plot to blow up the House of Commons. Suppose, during WWII, in the US, a bunch of Japanese American sympathisers with the Japanese Imperial cause had been discovered to be plotting major mayhem.
Does anyone imagine that tenderly solicitous specially-trained officers would have been sent in to 'support' the 'distressed' families of the arrested plotters, or that the authorities would be anxiously, grovellingly consulting with 'community leaders'?
My husband, by the way, is an optimist. On my pointing out that astonishing paragraph to him, he remarked:
'Maybe it's code for 'the families and community leaders of the accused are "assisting the police with their inquiries"'.
"Specially trained officers" - I am curious about their training. And yes, an odd word - "supported". As if there had been an accident or something.
I admired the British so much for the way they dealt with the Thuggees of India. They hanged them - very degrading for the Moslems among them (the Thugs were a mixture of Moslems and Hindus.) Also, the children of the Thug families were incarcerated in special factory-compounds for their entire lives so they could not resume the practice of Thuggism or breed, the cult being an intergenerational family business. Thus the British were creative with the law, and eradicated the cult permanently. (I have not heard any Indians complaining about its demise.)
Thesedays the British wouls be criticized for interfering with the Thugs' human or collective rights, and Thuggism seen from the perspective of cultural relativism.
But the Thugs were nothing compared to the Islamists, and didn't threaten the British themselves. Somehow, the British seem to have decided that the punishment they deserve for their colonial adventures is capital punishment, that they must die out, or live forever in abject humiliation. If that is the case then everyone, even Australian Aborigines who wiped out (apparently) the pygmies who preceded them, is equally guilty by virtue of their race.
So come on, British! Lead the way! You have as much right as anyone to live freely and unmolested in your own land, to keep it for yourselves, and determine your own future!
Did I say "equally guilty"? Excuse me! Golly, how could I? The British didn't wipe out anyone; they colonized, and did some bad things and some good things, and dragged many people into a more civilized way of living. Eventually they cleared out of many former colonies when they were pushed. Then the people who didn't want them in their countries lording it over them must have had a change of heart, so followed the Britsh to Britain so they could be ruled by them after all.
Now it is time to tell the Moslems that the party is over and it is time for them to go home.India for the Indians! Sudan for the Sudanese! Pakistan for the Pakistanis! England for the English! Why not? If they can do it, why not us?
