ORANGE, Calif. — A Southern California county will allow jailed Muslim women to wear headscarves after settling a lawsuit with a woman who claims that deputies violated her religious freedom by making her remove her hijab.The settlement agreement signed by the county last week and released Monday specifies that Muslim women must be provided a private area to remove their headscarves after arrest and must be provided with county-issued headscarves to cover themselves when they are in the presence of men.
The county, which did not admit wrongdoing, will also pay $45,000 in damages. Plaintiff Jameelah Medina will get $10,000 after subtracting attorney fees, said Hector Villagra, director of the Orange County office of the American Civil Liberties Union. [...]
"We had a concern about religious rights and they had a concern about safety. We met halfway to ensure that nothing like this will ever happen again," Villagra said.

knowing how prisioners do improvise in jail, I imagine that the scarf would provide excellent weapons. They dont provide belts for prisioners for this whole reason, scarfs might not be as strong as a belt, but who needs to be as strong if they can cause some injury to someone? Or suicide...

It says she's a "business trainer" from Rialto who was using an invalid train pass. She spent 12 hours in jail, but was never charged.

The deputies violated her "religious freedom". Her religion gives her the freedom to kill the deputies with impunity. So why stop at the hijab? Why not provide guns to muslim inmates as standard issue when they are booked so that they can have full religious freedom?

"...met halfway" on a SAFETY issue? Who's safety, the prisoner? Other prisoners? Guards? This is just flat out WRONG. Wait for the first lawsuit when someone gets strangled, or hung (to self or others)
Don't Sikh followers wear that big-ass head covering, AND carry a little dagger? Shouldn't they also be allowed the same accommodation in jail? Why don't we hear anything from them?
BTW, I hope Robert can weigh in on this from his religious studies, but a Pentecostal minister I work with says that "women covering their hair" dates back to early Christian sects, where some of the converts were pagan um, "temple girls" who had shaved heads - once converting they were told to cover their head until their hair grew back - in other words, a temporary condition. So it was a sign of modesty, but sure got twisted around by "someone"
Here's what I want to know:
Why do female inmates on a cell block,in a pod, or whatever you want to call it, need hijabs? They would be, after all, not in the company of men, but that of other women.
I can see it, in court. I can see it while being escorted by male guards.
But, on a permanent basis? Puhleez!
I'm a much bigger supporter of reasonable accommodation for religious observance, including Muslims, than most of the folks who frequent these pages. But extra covering in a correctional environment is not reasonable. It's dangerous. This is disgraceful in its disrespect for the safety of correctional personnel.
This is just one county. Watch for all the other California county jails to follow suit, and then the state prison system. That's if they haven't done so already.

Prisoners have no civil rights. This is not a human rights violation. It's a civil rights violation. The State of California should be sued for wasting time and money protecting the rights of a prisoner. Furthermore, non-citizens (and we know this chick is not a citizen!) aren't entitled to civil rights, so this whole case is fraudulent.
In Jdamn's America only taxpayers would be entitled to civil rights and get to vote. We were founded on the principle of no taxation without representation and that should be a two-way street.

As a former jailer, I am extremely wary of this decision. It was mentioned above that such an item could be used for strangulation, either of oneself or others. (We used to make female prisoners even turn in their bras, just in case.)
Muslims proportionally are represented at a greater number in prisons than non Muslims. First either by their criminal behavior and second by proselytizing of prisoners by Muslims Imams. After all it is the religion of criminals. They emulate the first Islamic terrorists and criminal par excellence Mohammad their sick pedophile prophet. No wonder this religion appeals to prison inmates and breeds criminals alike.
Muslims have more prisoners and more welfare recipients, proportionally, than any other group. In any nation they migrate to.
