Fitzgerald: The Taliban is not monolithic

"The Taliban is not monolithic." -- from this article

Of course it isn't. There are extreme radical extremists and there are moderate extreme radical extremists and there are radical moderate extremists and there are moderate radical moderate extremists and there are moderate immoderate radical moderate extremists, and so on.

Just a guess: The idea that such-and-such is 'not monolithic' is often a prelude to appeasement.

Talking to the Taliban...the movie...starring Barack Obama.

A variation on Teddy Roosevelt..."Talk softly and carry a big stick'...

Barack...'Whisper sweet nothings and carry a jizya check'.

This will be a box office hit in Pakistan...

f the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have taught anything, it's that they cannot be won by military might alone.

they haven't seen military might. think of the last big war. think of fire bombing toyoko or the Dresden. this hasn't happened, i don't think our leaders would order it.

i'm saying order it now, islamic thugs are no different than your bullies, its the one way to get their attention.

'Whisper sweet nothings and carry a jizya check'.

The Swami rocks!

Even supposing that the Taliban is not a monolith, does that matter to the innocent people they've killed?

Maybe not monolithic, but, for those who can read, they all read the same books.

I just found a Taliban who is not a monolith:

"I don’t believe that Taliban are terrorists," he asserts. "We want to spread the message of love and fraternity among the people of the world."

In a free society we grow up and choose if we want to be a fireman, doctor, teacher... you get the idea. We are not monolithic.

In a Taliban society you get to choose if you want to kill infidels or non Taliban, grow food for the killers, have babies for the killers, teach Taliban ideas to the children of the killers...you get the idea. Therefore the Taliban is also not monolithic.

What, no Judean People's Front jokes? I'm shocked.

It's already noted that the taliban were very flexible about morality what with their opium poppies and so on. Finding out that, oh my, some of them are actually relaively moderate (they don't kill people, they just grow food for the people who do!) is... well how the hell do these journalists think an army equips and supports itself? Out of thin air?
