Jakarta, 5 Nov. (AKI) – Representatives of some of Indonesia’s fundamentalist Islamic groups on Wednesday celebrated United States President-elect Barack Obama's sweeping victory in Tuesday's presidential polls, claiming the win will be good for interracial relations and world peace....Muhammad Nidzom Hidayatullah, general secretary of the Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) East Java branch, told Adnkronos International that Obama’s election was the result of democracy and this showed that the US has begun to open up to different races.
“Everyone should cherish this because it is likely that it will lead to improvements to race relations all over the world,” he said.
The MUI is the country’s top state-endorsed Muslim organisation. It is considered rather conservative and out of sync with most of the country’s 200 million Muslims, who profess a liberal and moderate version of Islam.
Achmad Sobry Lubis, secretary general of the militant, anti-American Front Pambela Islam (FPI) said that he “praised Allah for Obama’s win.”
“This is what we all wanted and we are now very hopeful that he can restore peace in the world,” he told AKI.
He also said that Obama’s multicultural upbringing should give him the tools to better understand the Muslim world.
“Hopefully this will go somewhere to change the image of Muslims in America where they are often equated with terrorists, anarchists and more.”...
Of course, Obama can't change the image of Muslims in America -- and why should he be able to, since, as he has insisted all along, he is a Christian and was never a Muslim? In any case, only Muslims in America have the power to change their image, by stopping their denial and obfuscation about Islamic jihad terrorism and supremacism, and working to end them. But no one should hold his breath waiting for them to do that.

Restoring peace is a job that is above the paygrade of the POTUS. It takes two to make a peace. No president can "restore" peace.
Show me the Muslims who want peace.

Actually the US began to open up even before the US was a political reality in 1776, from the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident,
that all men are created equal..."
It is nice that a Muslim (Muhammad Nidzom Hidayatullah) admits there is good to be found in the ideology of Democracy, but one wonders if perhaps Mr Hidayatullah may be leaning towards aposticism in his statement. I fear for his life.

It would be wonderful if Obama were to meet, and not for a fleeting photo opportunity, with Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Born and raised in Somalia, she's also lived in Kenya, Saudi Arabia, The Netherlands, and the United States. In other words, in a two black African states, one Muslim and one largely Christian, in another state that is the center of the Arab and Muslim world, in the country in Western Europe that has made practically a national fetish out of tolerance and diversity, and finally, in the United States, even in Washington. Last night I nervously rang another black acquaintance, and he DIDN'T like Obama. Phew.

And another thing: Every time I hear of blacks denigrating this country, I wonder, would blacks in America rather still be living in Africa? subsisting on less than a dollar a month, going barefoot, wearing rags, having no indoor plumbing, unschooled, illiterate, always running from those who want to kill them?
I say, give all haters of America a one-way ticket back to Africa or Jordan or Iran or Indonesia. Let them see for themselves the horrors these countries have in store for them - especially for Christians.
angry american: I wonder what those hysterically cheering Africans they showed on TV are expecting from Obama? I don't think it is seeing the return of black Americans to Africa. It might be that they think the immigration door will be wider, or free movement will be possible between America and Africa, or something like that. Who knows? Obama will have to think of something pretty amazing to maintain the adoration they have for him, and the HOPE.
I have a question. If Barack's original father was a Muslim by birth (even though professing to be an atheist at an older age) and Barack's step-father was a Muslim even though he wasn't a devout Muslim (here in Indonesia we say Muslim on your KTP (identity card)but not a real practicing Muslim), wouldn't Barack be considered an apostate because he professes to be a Christian? While attending SD Menteng 1 (primary school) in Jakarta, his religion was recorded as Muslim (same as his father and step-father). His compulsory religion class was Islam (perhaps because there was no Christian religion teacher at the government school which is typical here). I am under the understanding that if you are born into a Muslim family whether praticing or not, you are automatically a Muslim in Islam's eyes. Obama professing to be a Christian is an act of rebellion and he would become an apostate. How can Muslims accept an apostate? Shouldn't Islamists want him dead? Or are they overlooking this because Obama's tolerance will allow them to weaken America and further their agenda of world domination and implementation of a world-wide caliphate?
