Shootings were reported in the lobby of the five-star Taj Mahal Palace hotel in the Colaba area of south Bombay and at the nearby Leopolds bar, a popular destination with western backpackers. Witnesses described pools of blood and bullet scarred walls at both locations.
A witness at the hotel told a local television station: “They wanted anyone with British or American passports.
"They wanted foreigners.”
It was feared that the death toll could rise significantly....
A police spokesman said: “We have only a very tenuous grasp on what is happening so far. People are scared. The incidents being reported are so many. Gunmen are under siege at several locations but we are worried about hitting civilians”

Scores dead: Army storms Mumbai hotels

"Indian troops have reportedly stormed Mumbai's luxury Oberoi and Taj Mahal Palace hotels after coordinated terrorist attacks which left scores of people dead and Westerners taken hostage.
At least 78 people have been killed and more than 200 injured in the attacks across India's financial capital this morning.
Targets included the Oberoi and Taj hotels, the city's main railway station, the Cama hospital, and the Cafe Leopold, near the Taj Hotel and perhaps the most famous restaurant and hang-out for tourists in the city.
This morning the Taj Hotel was on fire and explosions had been heard in both the hotels.
Acting Foreign Minister Simon Crean says at least two Australians have been injured in the attacks. Anyone concerned about friends or relatives can call DFAT on 1300 555 135
A trade delegation from New South Wales was among the guests staying at the Oberoi Hotel.
The delegation of about 20 people includes representatives from several companies in New South Wales as well as some departmental staff.
A spokeswoman for the NSW Department of State and Regional Development says the leader of the delegation called the department when alarms were going off in the hotel and they were being asked to leave their rooms, but the department has not been able to contact him since.
An organisation calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attacks in an email sent to Indian media organisations.
One witness at the Taj hotel said the attackers had been searching for people with British and American passports.
"I guess they were after foreigners, because they were asking for British or American passports," said Rakesh Patel, a British witness who lives in Hong Kong and was staying at the Taj Mahal hotel on business. "They had bombs."
"They came from the restaurant and took us up the stairs," he told the NDTV news channel, smoke stains all over his face. "Young boys, maybe 20 years old, 25 years old. They had two guns."
Speaking to ABC2's News Breakfast program, former ABC reporter Savitri Choudhry said the attacks had plunged the city into chaos.
"There have already been three explosions inside the [Taj] hotel," she said.
"There have been reports that the commandos were trying to storm the hotel but ... they're not sure how many people they are up against.
"I was in the Taj Hotel myself earlier this evening. As soon as I heard about the blast I called [my friend]. She was holed up in her room ... she said she could hear them outside her door. She turned off her lights and television ... we've been trying to call her but there's been no response yet and that's been very disturbing.
"People have been calling out, some have even escaped. There are a large number of guests who have been cordoned off and are in a safe part of the hotel."
An Australian woman caught up in the attacks says the city is in chaos.
Chloe Papazahariakis told the Nine Network Mumbai is in total lockdown.
She says she has just moved to Mumbai to be married in four days and has about 20 friends with her for the wedding in the midst of the chaos.
Ms Papazahariakis says she and her friends have locked themselves inside the restaurant where her reception is to be held.
She says a nearby hospital has been bombed by terrorists.
She also says one man was shot dead in a gun battle between police and terrorists just 10 metres from the restaurant they are in.

There are reports of Westerners being taken hostage in the series of shootings and bombings at targets including the city's five-star Taj Mahal Palace and Oberoi hotels and the main railway station.
Acting Foreign Minister Simon Crean says at least two Australians have been injured in the attacks.
An Indian Government official says fighting between Indian security forces and the terrorists is continuing in at least two places, the Cama hospital and the Taj Mahal hotel.
There was also an attack on the Cafe Leopold, perhaps the most famous restaurant and hang-out for tourists in the city, and at hospitals and railway stations.
"I guess they were after foreigners, because they were asking for British or American passports," said Rakesh Patel, a British witness who lives in Hong Kong and was staying at the Taj Mahal hotel on business. "They had bombs."
"They came from the restaurant and took us up the stairs," he told the NDTV news channel, smoke stains all over his face. "Young boys, maybe 20 years old, 25 years old. They had two guns."

All the attacks happened in the south of the city in areas popular with tourists and business travellers.
The Department of Foreign Affairs in Canberra is closely monitoring the situation in Mumbai and is updating its travel advice for those who may be travelling to India.
The department has deployed extra resources this morning and is encouraging people with concerns about family or friends in Mumbai to contact them.

Gunmen on the loose
Earlier Maharahstra state police chief AN Roy said attackers had fired automatic weapons indiscriminately and used grenades, adding that they were still holed up in some buildings.
"These are terrorist strikes in at least seven places," he told the NDTV news channel.
"Unknown terrorists have gone with automatic weapons and opened fire indiscriminately. At a few places they even used grenades."
TV showed the lobbies of the Taj and the Oberoi on fire, with people being evacuated from the Oberoi with their hands on their heads.
"The lobby of the Taj hotel is on fire," a police spokesman said. "We are trying to find out how many people are inside the hotel."
Some of the injured were evacuated from the Taj on the hotel's golden luggage carts, while waiters in black and white formal wear and chefs were seen leaving the Oberoi.
Television stations also reported shooting outside the Cafe Leopold, a popular restaurant for tourists in the city, and at hospitals and railway stations.
A reporter heard two explosions and then short bursts of automatic gunfire in the same street as the restaurant.
The wreckage of a red scooter, the remains of shop awnings and broken glass were strewn across the street.
Armed police, rifles cocked at the hip, set up barricades around the explosion site, and local people were seen yelling at each other, angry that another terror attack had hit the city.
Vehicles and street vendors' barrows were used to keep locals away, and speeding military four-wheel drives with horns blaring arrived at the bomb site.
There were other attacks elsewhere.
"They entered the passenger hub of a station and started firing," AK Sharma, a Mumbai police government railway police commissioner told local television.
Sameeran Chakraborty, a Mumbai resident, told the NDTV news channel he heard a blast inside a car near the city airport.
"It was a big noise and one car was involved, definitely not more than that," he said.
India has suffered a wave of bomb attacks in recent years. Most have been blamed on Islamist militants, although police have also arrested suspected Hindu extremists thought to be behind some of the attacks.

The events described took place in French Somaliland in the mid-70's. I mistakenly said that it had become part of Somalia, but actually it became independent as the country of Djibouti in 1977.

And if you click on the link you see a picture that looks like a scene out of Baghdad - stuff all over the place, pools of blood everywhere.
Seems to me that the passenger hub of a station would be mostly full of Indians, not Europeans, and that even if the crowd were mixed, someone randomly firing into the crowd would kill more Indians than Europeans. I am sure that when this particular battle is over, we will find that more non-Muslim Indians than Europeans or Americans have been murdered by the jihadists.

I was appalled at the list for the simple reason that it is not illegal to support the BNP and members of this party should receive the same anonymous rights as any other party. I'm all for free speech as I believe it sacrosanct, however where the UK has fallen is bowing down to European Laws and ending British Treason Law. Marches in the UK by Islamists should be allowed by all means but then, once they're finished, in the police should move and arrest every one of them for treason and plotting harm towards the British people, for British these people are not.
We must not ban this or ban that. We have seen that this is NuLabour's weapon they've used to keep the people down. Their latest ban of course is 'Happy hour' in pubs, next it will be alcohol and very possibly pig! By banning this and that what we do is turn into the very people we fight against. We would be no different from the Islamists within the UK. What is needed are tougher laws and sentencing. For example, if there is a March by Muslims with signs such as "Hail the magnificent 19" or "London your 9/11 will come" then the answer is simple. Arrest these people, in fact arrest them all, fingerprint them, DNA them, Iris scan them and bug their houses. Any evidence whatsoever on them that is against the British people would immediately be used in evidence for treason. When that is found, they would be tried, found guilty and taken to a place where they will be kept until they are forthrightly taken to another place where a rope will be placed around their neck and they will be hanged until they are dead.
The death penalty needs to be brought in for people like them and the doors closed for Muslim immigration, study and tourism. That way if Muslims want to become Jihadists, then they are more likely to end up hanging on the end of a rope, which will of course continue to decrease the population of Islam within the UK.
We cannot become like our enemy or else they have won and it's really that simple. We must remain firm but true, strong, honest, integruous and just, or else the Britain we are will no longer be.

This is why we need to break away from European control and back to British law and rule. This is why I say that treason needs to be brought back. Better still, we can turn to Brussels and state why should we listen to you and who do you think you are dictating to us when had it not been for us then you'd be speaking German. Europe owes Britain a great debt for coming to its aid in WW2. It never paid that debt back and instead decided to take us over with the Treaty of Rome and the Lisbon Treaty.
Britain needs to take control of its borders again and once it has we would be able to deal with the Muslim threat. If the Human rights decided to say we were wrong, let them. They can come and get us, with their UN who would end up with more holes in them than Swiss cheese. Even better, when Britain leads the way, the other countries will follow and the Human Rights courts will become but a mere memory of how they, had they been allowed to continue would have brought in Islamisation and an end to the very thing they practice. At least we would still have Human Rights under British Law the way it used to be and so would most countries in Europe too. We'd be doing them a favour.

Let me make one thing abundantly clear here - against the global jihad, all 'kaffirs' are allies. That means Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, Jews, and all the rest.
I live in the UK and the aforementioned groups work their asses off for the most part, just like the 'whites' do. Let's not get involved in taxpayer's money being spent, for crying out loud. It is suicidal for us to distance ourselves from good, hard working people in any nation who have borne the brunt of the jihad in their own countries.
The BNP have some interesting policies, but I'm not too pleased about some of their older material. I'm not quite sure what to think of their new image as a result. They do appear to have changed their old blanket racism into a keener appreciation that the groups I've mentioned above are victims like the rest of us, but appearances can be deceptive. So I read anything to do with them with a large grain of salt and watch. Unfortunately, they are the only party in the UK that seems to understand the gravity of the Jihadist threat. There isn't really anybody else in the running who at least openly appears to understand it.
Whether Brits and Americans were singled out, don't forget that Indians are targeted again and again for attacks of their own. It's hardly inconceivable that Indians died in the attacks. Can we get over this divide over race and focus on the fact that we are all fair game for the kind of people that carried out these attacks?
This is not the point at which to play the 'I'm more targeted than you' game. We're all targets of this ideology, and the sooner we figure that out the better we'll all be for it.
Incidentally...whatever political party or bent Robert endorses doesn't really matter to the rest of us, although he does condemn far right groups to my knowledge. It doesn't matter because the resurgence of the far right all over Europe is practically inevitable in my opinion within the next twenty years. The Left are simply not interested in combating Jihadism, and they are leaving far right groups wide open for recruitment because people have had enough of the kowtowing to open declarations of discrimination and violence.
I had an angry internet exchange with a Labour councilor, whereupon I warned her that this was coming if her party didn't do anything about rampant segregation and 'no go' zones in the country, etc. She wrote an article essentially congratulating herself that she was more tolerant and refined than the awful people who were now voting for the far right.
The majority of people voting for the far right now in my opinion are doing so because they oppose mass immigration coupled with a lack of integration which is dividing society along cultural lines and creating parallel mini nations within a nation that brings with it all the makings of a fully segregated society at odds with itself. The mainstream parties are portraying people who vote the far right for these reasons as illiterate, racist, knuckle-dragging skinheads, a characterization that wins far right parties more support because they are out of touch with the real issues that people are abandoning the mainstream parties over.
This is the way things will play out if governments ignore the will of the people. I'm not exaggerating. There is a growing groundswell of support for right wing parties on these issues in my country amongst people who are not actually racist, but don't know what else they can do. The future of the UK is uncertain and what such parties would do with power were they given it is even more uncertain. I look towards the future of the UK with a real sense of trepidation...

Well put. Islam has named itself our common enemy. We all have to stand against this aggression. Details out of Mumbai are still vague, but it sounds as though Indians have been attacked along with Britons and Americans--and probably others, as well.

The last post by Fred was in fact a very good one that painted a true picture of Islamisation in the UK and the inability of the Polive Force.

My deleted post was 80% a repeat of my reply to a recent post to one "Benson" on another thread. As I had said earlier, Vikrant_Camberleykar lives/lived in one of the wealthiest areas of Southern England and is the (Son?) of 2 doctors. Consequently in common with everyone else down there he has no idea of the situation in London let alone in the industrial North.
I am not too bothered about anyone else but I think he should know.
BTW your new typepad is still screwing up about 50% of the time. When I preview it shows the post but tells me I am not signed in. When I do the post has disappeared so I have learned to copy it, sign in and try again.

Thank you for your posts but I really am angry that Marisol just deleted twelve threads that had personal experience, contemplation and views, not just on Islamisation but also why Britain is the way it is. You never saw the post that I replied to Wellington(one of the deleted). It took me the best part of 30 mins or so to write. It was quite long, very descriptive, but because it mentioned the BNP and why the British people do feel the way they do as well as the cultural differences between the White Celtic, Anglo Saxon, Norse and the Black and Asians here in the UK, he deleted it. He felt this was turning into a 'dumping ground' for the BNP when what it was turning into, was discussion by people, from the UK, who are having no choice BUT to turn to the BNP as they are the only party that see the dangers of Islam, Multiculturalism, Uncontrolled Immigration and absorption into the EU. He doesn't realise that we, in the UK, no longer have freedom of Speech left as it is being removed by our Fascist Left Wing government in their pursuit for totalitarianism. I even posted that I have never voted for the BNP but that wasn't' good enough. Like in the UK, with the witchhunt against people who no longer have freedom to choose whom they wish to vote for, Marisol has not even realised the dire situation we face here in the UK and his reaction to our plight in airing our views on the UK is to delete our posts. So much for freedom of speech. I thought this was a place that would at least honour that, but I'm beginning to see that it most certainly isn't. I know you won't be able to reply to this DA but it would be rude for me to ignore your reply to me. Marisol today has behaved no different to the people he is stating he is very much against. P.S.
